At least it did for Plymouth College of Ar t and Design graduate, Shaun Gordon, who jumped at a redundancy offer from The Western Morning News, after almost four years. After grabbing the cash, Shaun traveled around the world for six months and decided not to go back to that sor t of design work and set about establishing himself in skate/snowboard design. He now has an extensive client list including Flip Skateboards and Ride snowboards and is making quite a name for himself. The image you see here is a special Halloween adaptation Shaun did for 247, from a three board series he did for Florida-based Longwood Skateboards, called ‘The Sounds of Silence’, like the Simon and Garfunkel song. Not InvinciBall Despite it being a great venue, which shares the sameethos as Surfers Against Sewage, the legendary SAS Ball will not be held at Porthtowan’s Eco Park again.The charity has made this announcement after branding the return of the party to mark its twentieth anniversary a success – see our pics on page 42 if you need proof of what a electric night it was. Although the Eco Park fitted perfectly for a low-impact and environmentally friendly ball,Porthtowan residents put together a campaign against having the ball on their doorstep. The SAS have now assured local residents that the ball would not affect them again. The SAS will revisit the idea of putting on another ball early next year, at another venue. Divine Comedy Club launchesOctober 10 sees the doors opening for the first time at Divine Comedy Club, at Exeter’s Timepiece Nightclub. WestfestThe biggest names in the UK rave scene descend on the Royal Bath and West Showground on Sat 30 October as Westfest takes over the showground, with over 60 DJ’s and MC’s across seven arena’s. Press Pack Sessions: The patrickjamespearson Band This month’s Press Pack Sessions sees Joe Biddle of Press Pack Studios talk to The patrickjamespearson Band, who are a three-piece, not a solo artist, as the name may suggest. Although the band only formed this summer they are already getting recognition. Their style? 60s classic song writing with a heart dash of American grunge. They’ve already got an EP out, ‘Game Birds’, and are currently recording their first album. Very interesting and entertaining chaps. Burning Tar Barrels Heads up for 5 November, forgot the usual fireworks and bonfire, for the real entertainment, you must head to Ottery St Mary, Devon to witness the Tar Barrels – Health and safety goes out the window for one night as children, women and big men carry burning barrels of tar on their backs through the crowded streets whilst the crowds watch…the catch: the streets are busier than Xmas Eve on Oxford St! CREam TouR iN plYmouThOne the UK’s biggest clubbing superbrands, Cream makes it’s first ever visit to Plymouth on Sat 16 Oct as part of a new UK tour. The brand will take over C103 on Union St and trance DJ, Richard Durand will be headlining the event. Durand is a DJ and producer, responsible for numerous , such as Fragma ‘Toca’s Miracle’ and a rework of Armin van Buuren ‘In And Out Of Love’. likEmuSiC ExETERLike Music (29 Oct), a brand new music event for Exeter, will set the grapevine a-Twitter with top artists including Finley Quaye, Don Letts, Neville Staple, and indie bands Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster and the Strange Death of Liberal England. Having exchanged their tickets for a wristband, tech-savvy music fans will take their pick of up to 15 bands in four different city venues, reporting back using geo-location networking tools and gadgetry. The fun is in getting to see as many bands as possible throughout the night - it should be possible to see all of the bands play if festival-goers plan their route right! paiNT JamThe Devon Music Collective are hosting graffiti event, Paint Jam, at the Lighthouse, Paignton on October the 9 and 10. “Our music makes you want to hug your friends” says Bowling For Soup front-man Jaret. He’s right; their fairly fast upbeat punk pop rock tunes have feel good factor in excess – take Girl All The Bad Guys Want for example – it’s impossible not to sing along, regardless of your usual musical poisons and prejudices...

Before Bowling for Soup became international stars, were nominated for a Grammy and had 1985 featured on Singstar Rocks for the PS2, lead guitarist Chris used to run a little coffee shop that had bands play all the time, which is how the guys met. They were all in bands that played there, which happened to fall apart at around the same time, so Bowling For Soup was formed. Where did they find that name? “It’s a play off an old Steve Martin Comedy bit where he is talking about a TV show he is working on called “Bowling for shit”, Jarret explains.

They didn’t just meet and become an overnight success though, quite the opposite, and something which has shaped Bowling For Soup immensely. “Nine years in a van with no money and for the most part not even a place to live will shape you. It formed a brother hood amongst us that I believe will never be broken...It also taught us to never take anything for granted!” says Jaret. We like that they don’t take take their fans for granted either, making a lot of time for interaction via their website. “I want my fans to know me, like I wanted to know bands back in the day, but I am very real; what you see is what you get - I just try not to disappoint anyone”, says Jaret.

In their epic 16 years together Bowling For Soup have released 11 albums. We asked Jaret if they ever find coming up with new material a chore: “Actually it is easier than ever. We have a niche – I don’t fight it. Bowling For Soup will never change the world by changing directions, we change individuals by teaching them that it is perfectly fine to be happy.” Jaret tells us that laughter is key to all things Bowling for Soup, including keeping the band together for all these years – you won’t find any melancholy maudlin here. “I am one of those that discovered early that if you can laugh at yourself, or at bad situations, you will be a much happier person.”

Bowling For Soup genuinely love the UK, play here a lot, and, quite rightly, cite our big music festivals as the best in the world. Jarret even really loves just saying Cornwall... So, what can we expect of their forthcoming Just Can’t Get Rid Of Us Tour? “Honestly, I think it will be the best show people see all year! I am so stoked to finally tour with ‘A’ and FTSK are so energetic. Yep, the guys certainly know how to pick decent support acts and they are even more adept at commanding a gig so that everyone leaves on a sweet sweaty high.

Butch Vig, who most people will remember as the producer of Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and last year’s ‘21st Century Breakdown’ by Green Day, recently finished working with Florida’s Against Me! on their genre-spanning fifth album ‘White Crosses’. The punk rock four-piece, who previously worked with Vig on their critically-acclaimed release ‘New Wave’ in 2007, are about to head out on a headlining tour of the UK with Canadian hardcore band Fucked Up and Plymouth’s very own Crazy Arm. Rob Sleigh spoke with Against Me! front man, Tom Gabel…

You’re about to embark on another tour of the UK, which includes two dates in the South West at Bristol and Plymouth. Do you enjoy playing over here?Yeah, the UK’s great. I’m a fan of the food. I like the curries. I’m also a fan of dreary weather, so that’s never a problem for me. I’m also a huge fan of the UK music scene.

In Plymouth, you’ll also be playing alongside local band Crazy Arm. Are you a fan of theirs?A huge fan. Their record ‘Born to Ruin’ is one of the few punk rock records that I’ve heard in the past couple of years that I’ve really latched onto. We’re really looking forward to hanging out with those guys.

Since Against Me’s debut album, the band’s sound has continued to evolve, particularly on new album ‘White Crosses’, which successfully blends a number of different genres and styles. Why has it been so important for your music to evolve in this way?Some of it is not even intentional. The more you do something, the better you get at it and the more refined you become. Also, you’re intentionally trying to push the boundaries of what you’re doing to not become bored.

You’ve worked with Butch Vig again on this record. What’s Butch like to work with and why did you decide to work with him again here?He’s my hero. The knowledge that I’ve gained from working with him is completely indispensable. I’ll be able to use it and

draw from it for the rest of my life. Beyond that, he’s just a really cool guy. The kind of guy that’s fun to have a couple of drinks with and just hang out.

On a number of occasions along the way, you’ve been accused by some of selling out. How do you feel about that kind of criticism?It’s always someone else’s definition of selling out. I always thought selling out would be if I decided it was time to hang up the guitar and put on a suit and tie to go to a desk job that I hate and be miserable for the rest of my life.

Your lyrics are quite personal. What goes through your mind when you’re writing songs?We’re a band that always gets labelled as a political band, but that’s not something that I’ve ever sought when it comes to song writing. I’m just expressing opinions that I feel on whatever topic I’m talking about. When it comes to writing, you just try and take an interest in everything and see what comes of certain topics. If something does come from it, it’s obviously something that you feel passionate about.

The RG Morrison’s new album has been receiving positive national press plus radio play, and so it should. Their brand of new-folk & Americana is warm, atmospheric and beautiful. The Totnes-based four-piece are gaining the recognition they deserve, with support from the likes of Steve Lamacq and gigs with American folk-rockers, Midlake. Arash Torabi talks to The RG Morrison’s main-man, Rupert, who describes their style as “Ramshackle love songs”.

The RG Morrison are experts in creating a textured sound with plenty of depth and melody, reaching for your soul with bags of melancholy. In recent years, new folk and Americana have proved to be hugely popular on a global level, so it’s extremely encouraging to see a young band from the South West taking these sounds beyond their native surroundings and out into the world.

Their debut album, Learning About Loathing, was released on Rupert’s own label, Drift, which also shares a name with the independent record shop he runs in Totnes. But since then, things have stepped up a gear and the band’s new set, Farewell My Lovely is released on Loose Music, the home of Felice Brothers and The Duke & the King. So why go with another label, when you’ve got one of your own? “Because the music industry is a loaded deck, simple as that. There are certain publications that covered the album and gave it high praise, but I believe that had the album been on my imprint, I’d have dropped a star or so, or maybe even left out all together. Loose are good guys- they made the offer to put the record out and I gladly accepted.”

With previous gigs at Green Man Festival, with Americana & folk giants, Midlake and forthcoming dates in Germany with John Grant, what’s the likelihood of catching the band in their hometown? “We’ve hardly ever played in Devon, and that’s rubbish”, Rupert said, “But we’ve decided to try and get things happening. I’m always asked by other bands to put them on, so we’ll give it a whirl. If people want to get involved, we’re going to do it, so get in-volved. Come to the record shop (Drift Records in Totnes), meet us, get involved.”

In the meantime, there’s plenty of other stuff Rupert is already involved with: shows in Germany, including the Rolling Stone Weekender (Germany’s own version of All Tomorrow’s Parties) and recording demos for the next album, Diamond Valley, for starters. Rupert is also working with British Underground (and Arts Council CFB) to put on events at Womex and also SXSW. “There is also a band called Fluers that I’m trying to help out. They might well be the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard.”

After the success of I Need Air and Perfect Stranger, dubstep super group Magnetic Man have just released their debut self titled album which was recorded in Cornwall and as they prepare to return to the region for a some live shows, Lekan Latinwo caught up with Benga for a chat.

How did you, Skream and Artwork come up with the name Magnetic Man?

The name was originally used as a disguise, we wanted the people to focus on the music and like it because it’s good quality music, and not focus on the fact that it’s me, Skream and Artwork who made it.

Apparently, you recorded the Magnetic Man album in Cornwall, how true is that?

It’s true, we recorded half of the album in Cornwall and the other half in London

Why did you choose Cornwall to do some of the recording?

Well, Skream, Artwork and myself we got real busy and hectic schedules, so to get all three of us in one place at one time can be a bit of a mission. Fortunately, we have friends outside of music who said: “Why not come to Cornwall to record, so you don’t get distracted from the task you’ve got to do?”. So we did. Besides Cornwall is a beautiful place to chill out and get away from all the day-to-day runnings and stress that you associate with London.

Tell us about the crazy antics at your show at this year’s Benicassim Festival in Spain, where the stage got rushed by hundreds of fans…

We all had a hand in that one, we had a four hour set, and I think Skream must have said to the crowd come up onstage as a joke and before you know it, the stage was rammed with people; plus I did some streaking at Benicassim too, as part of a crazy bet, as you do. The promoter has banned us from performing at next year’s festival, but I do hope they change their mind, we promise we’ll be on our best behaviour.

Seeing that you like doing crazy bets, and crazy things in general. Would you ever completely shave off your afro?

Well it depends what I would be doing it for? I’m also known as the Afro Warrior, what would I call myself if I cut off my afro?

Tell us about the gigs you’ve played in Bristol and the South West…

I remember playing at The Black Swan pub in Easton, Bristol about four years ago, that was good, Bristol Academy, and I mustn’t forget Glastonbury and Big Chill Festivals, I like to do crowd surfing with an audience of 10,000 people, you just got to do it.

Why do you think Dubstep has got so big recently, especially in Bristol, where we’ve got the likes of Joker and Jakes?

Dubstep has been around for years, I got involved with it when it wasn’t even called Dubstep. I think it needed time to develop and evolve to where it is now, and with what the Bristol guys have done is that they’ve seen what’s been done with Dubstep and have added their own slant to it, so their Dubstep sounds help the genre grow, and influence the next generation - which is all good.

As Bristol and the South West have such a rich musical history, what artists would you like to work with from the region?

Two of my major musical influences from the South West are Roni Size and DJ Die, I love “Brown Paper Bag” and “Dirty Beats”, those tracks are like anthems to me.

Who else would you like to work with?

Not a lot of people know this but I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan, you can call him pop (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) you can call him weird, but the way I see it, good music is good music and he made it consistently for nearly four decades and influenced so many other artists, he is the ultimate pop star. If he was still alive I would love to make a track with him.

A few months ago your record label Sony bought Michael Jackson’s back catalogue and unreleased songs for £160million or thereabouts. So could there be a possibility of Sony asking you to do a remix for Michael Jackson?

You never know!

The weather has caused a drought of new pieces on the usual spots, so we took a day trip to the big smoke of Bristol to see what was going down, and we weren’t disappointed. Some great pieces on the legal sites and big commissions on the end of houses in the edgier parts of the city really create a good buzz.

Black MountainWilderness Heart (Jagjaguwar)

You may not be familiar with how things rolled after the summer of love so Vancouver’s Black Mountain are here to whisk you back to a psyche-sozzled ’71, when Sabbath were riffing the light fantastic and Jefferson Airplane were imploding in a hail of harmonic grandeur. Dressing nostalgia in modern hipster jeans, ‘Old Fangs’ is a monstrously cool song that aims to seduce you with its paranoiac keyboards and über-glam groove. Out-done only by the pure vintage gall of the title track, where Amber Webber’s icy trill shines bright. The acoustic songs don’t always hit their target but the band’s remit remains clear and true: they don’t write ‘em like they used to, so we will. The Arteries

Dead Sea(Specialist Subject)

Pride of the UK underground frat, The Arteries sophomore platter sees them packing their goodie-bag with technically dazzling, hooktastic punk/rock delights. Reminiscent of Hundred Reasons before they became too self-conscious, songs such as ‘Acoustic Associations’ are emotionally charged cage-rattlers that stampede through melodies and time signatures before arriving at sumptuous refrains that provide the perfect kiss-off. And when the band go full throttle – ‘Turn Of The Tide’, ‘Shitty Band’ – they’re Van Halen in a Minor Threat hoodie. All the while, yelping vocalist, Miles Morgan, strains to hit notes that are just out of reach, like a power-lifter who knows that a couple extra pounds will make all the difference. We like, a lot.

The XcertsScatterbrain(Xtra Mile)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more lamb-like soul than Murray MacLeod. Put him in front of neo-rock trio, The Xcerts, though, and something strange and beautiful happens. He doesn’t turn green and shed his Slim-fits but he does burst forth with the kind of song that the word catharsis was invented for. Sharing a lineage with fellow Scotsmen, AC Acoustics, the band’s second album is a confident and muscular beast, especially when you figure in quasi-punk cauldrons of emotion like ‘Slackerpop’ and ‘Hurt With Me’; while the exquisite ‘Carnival Time’ hints at Arcade Fire-esque desolation before letting loose with the big guns. Ultimately, melancholy is The Xcerts stock-in-trade and it courses through ‘Scatterbrain’ like wildfire.

Fat Joe The Darkside Vol 1(E1music Records)

***New York needs to to get their ish together and bring hip hop back. Apart from Jay Z, no other artist is bringing out consistently strong hip hop. There was a time when Terror Squad and Fat Joe were still a big deal. So, here all the boxes have been ticked, crossover producers Just Blaze, Cool & Dre, underground producers Scram Jones and Scoop Deville and even the legendary Dj Premier. Even guest collaborations with A listers Busta Rhymes, R Kelly and Lil Wayne. But with all that behind him this still isn’t as hot an album as it needs to be, some good quality head nod material and some warm up tunes, but sadly no 1st class bangers.

Capone n NoreagaThe War Report 2(Ice H20 records)

Another New York album with a lot to live up to. The first War Report from these two was massive, at a time when New York was on fire, since then Noreaga is best known for neptunes banger Nuthin as well as a wrong turn that took him down the reggaeton route. Now he’s back with Capone and a whole roster of guest artists, Nas, Busta, Faith Evans, the Lox and Raekwon, yet again this feels like a mixtape rather than a return to form. Don’t get me wrong the flows are tight and production is wicked, yet it lacks that certain something that would make everyone go “wow, NY still got it”.

Thievery CorporationThe very Best of(Esl records)

There was a time, what seems like forever ago, that a new music came along called trip hop, part smokers music, part hip hop part dub, the haters called it coffee table music, and then it became an insult to call something trip hop, so people started calling it lounge music or downbeat. Whatever you class it as the Thievery Corporation were up there at the top, quality music with world influences and banging productions, Lebanese Blonde was massive. Since then they’ve still put out great music but there time had passed, this album is a timely reminder of how great they were, if you never heard them this is a great place to start and with all the attention now on dub and its step.

Prince FattySupersize(Mr Bongo)

For those unaware Prince Fatty are a modern reggae outfit, they’ve been around a while delivering quality modern reggae but for me their biggest hits have been cheeky remakes tipping their hats to the reggae mash up scene. Covers of “shimmy shimmy ya” and “insane in the brain” stand out but that could be down to my love of cover versions as much as any indication of quality. Their first album I loved and was surprised as usually I want my music authentic, I want my reggae made by someone who lives at least close to orange street not shoreditch, yet they came with an album that gained critical acclaim and sold decent quantities. The Prince Fatty sound is on the rise, get involved”

DeerhunterHalcyon Digest(4AD)

This 4th album by Atlanta’s Deerhunter has all the makings of a classic. The album boast many faces, opening with the dreamy/nightmarish Earthquake, which shows the band’s love for studio effects. They can deliver beautiful tortured pop (Don’t Cry) as well as more experimental moods, suggesting they could please Glasvegas and Grizzly Bear fans alike. There’s 60s influences there too, and they seem to be fond of effects pedals. A psychedelic masterpiece and album worth ranting about.

Various ArtistsBustin’ Out 1983: New Wave to New Beat Volume 3(Year Zero)

Third collection in the series that explores early electronic music, and it suggests that some of today’s artists who claim to be “futuristic”, are a bit retro! OK, so recording methods have obviously changed, but many producers often go out of their way to capture an ‘80s sound. Anne Clarke’s Sleeper in Metropolis is an obvious blueprint for techno. Early electro is also alive and well, with Jonzun Crew. New Order’s Your Silent Face shows a forward-thinking band that spawned countless other guitar & synth-mergers for years to come. Although some of the other tracks here sound a tad monotonous, this is a good snapshot of an era when artists really did pave the way for the future.

The PipettesEarth Versus the Pipettes(Fortuna Pop)

The ‘80s was a time of endless conflicting styles, many of which are currently being mimicked. But sadly, the Pipettes’ have chosen to regurgitate the most despicable aspect of that decade: brainless disco-pop. The lyrics are naïve and the music sounds like it was made on a toy synth that cost 50p from a charity shop, and then smothered with eight tonnes of gloss. Shame, because it’s produced by Martin Rushent, the man responsible for Dare by The Human League, a milestone in electronic-pop. We’re told the Pipettes want to load a spaceship full of dance music and “fire it into the stars”. It would be wonderful if the Pipettes were to put themselves into that spaceship, never to return.

BabyheadHeavy Weather(Rockers Revolt)

Bristol’s masters of hip-hop-fuelled ska return for a third album, bursting with rhythmic consciousness. It’s not hard to assume that Babyhead are more than capable of moving arses in a live situation, but rather than going straight for the easy money, they give you some extras. There’s social observations and storytelling, together with Mancub’s ability to keep it tight on the mic, whether he’s rhyming or singing. There’s some strong songwriting in the mix too: check The Open Road for evidence. The Rhythm also boasts the slickest guitar playing in ska since Roddy Radiation (The Specials). A winner.

Featuring ex-members of Baby Astrolab and Blindfold Garden, Hanterhir is an altogether different proposition and a very impressive one. The Truro/Redruth quartet flit effortlessly between gentle swarthes of pastoral folk-pop (‘Bytegnns Kothman’) and a much heavier, dense mesh of psyche-rock (‘Our Hour’) with a keen eye for windswept drama. But the reason why Hanterhir are this month’s top catch is because of a mighty diamond called ‘The Carn Marth Song’. It’s indescribably good. It sounds like Theatre Of Hate scrumming with an Irish marching band and is, quite probably, the greatest song I’ve heard on a demo in years. Much more of this gloriously wild forest-punk, please.

97 Lovers(www.myspace.com/97lovers)

Exeter upstarts 97 LOVERS invoke the spirit of all manner of ‘80s post-punk luminaries, alive and dead, on their new two song demo. The trouble is, it all sounds too much like a 6th form collage of pick’n’mix influences as opposed to a cohesive, considered whole. ‘The Next Best Thing’ rifles through Ian Curtis’ pockets after tumbling out of The Cure’s gaff while ‘Magic’ kicks off with anti-pop manoeuvres reminiscent of ‘Metal Box’-era PiL, morphs into Magazine and revisits the corpse of Curtis to nab his undercrackers. Atop this, Andy Oxley’s voice is a monotonic, detached drone that makes Gary Numan sound like Timmy Mallet. At least they have a vision, albeit a cockeyed one.

Kosmo Kings(www.moonlet.co.uk)

Formed from the ashes of Kolo & Chasing Faces, new kids on the Exeter block, Kosmo Kings make a fair fist of faintly emo-riven rock on their debut five song EP. The musicianship is unquestionable, the singer Jon Burnell’s earnest croon is note-perfect and all that, but the likes of ‘How Could You Do This To Me’ and ‘Chasing The Stars’ sound like the work of a band who grew up sitting politely next to Steve Lamacq in the early evening when they should’ve been shagging John Peel in the middle of the night. There’s nothing wrong with KK, but there’s nothing here that gets the seat of my pants wet – and, right now, that’s what I need.

Opening with ‘Daylight The Fucking Fireworks’, a slow-building slab of quintessential post-rock in the vein of Explosions In The Sky, Bristol’s Daylight Fireworks new mini-album, ‘Secretly We Hope’, promises great things. Alas, it proves to be a non sequitir as the rest of the demo settles on an all-too familiar indie-rock formula. ‘Cold Shoulder’ could be Weezer if it was a lot more streetsmart, while the other four songs fiddle and fidget like Pavement with ants in their pants. There are some nice keyboard touches throughout (especially on the breezy ‘You Know You Know’) but some more yearning grandeur to match the opener is sorely needed.

Magnetic ManMagnetic Man

****This self titled debut album brings dubstep to a wider audience. Parts touch on the garage side of dubstep and a far more hectic side. ‘K Dance’ does exactly what is says on the tin, whilst ‘Ping Pong’ catches a smooth bouncy flow building throughout. Guest vocals include Ms Dynamite, John Legend & Angela Hunter. A couple of tracks seem overly experimental but grow on you & some are more dubstep pop. If you’re looking for a more underground sound, ‘Karma Crazy’ or ‘Mad’ may be more up your street. There’s a good mix of light & dark sounds throughout - not just one for dubstep heads. Blame

The Music

Blame has risen through the D&B rankings in recent years with on point production & clear musical talent, breaking him apart from others. Here, he has collaborated with some great acts to broaden his scope. Ruff Sqwad (Tinchy Strider & Fuda Guy), Dynamite MC, Rodney P and DRS bring a lyrical flavour while Jocelyn Brown, Jenna G, Selah, Alex Miles, Camilla, JT Fitz and Tom Sears add vocals to rolling uplifting beats that’d keep any dancefloor alive. This one is full of energy & diversity. For a debut album, it has really hit the spot. He has remixed for some massive mainstream artists and there is a lot more to be seen from Blame.

Artificial IntelligenceStand Alone(Twisted Nerve)

A.I. have always stayed true to their sound bringing an atmospheric, edgy feel without going too dark. This is only the second album released on Bryan G’s V Recordings after Roni Size’s and it’s a big one. Glenn and Gambit (A.I) have been in demand to remix some high ranking commercial labels in the past few years (‘Trick Me’ by Kelis & ‘Slammin’ by Eric Prydz). Collaborations on this album include dBridge, Marky & Krust with vocal input from Steo, Jenna G and DRS. ‘Stand Alone’ takes you through a D&B journey while still keeping a signature sound throughout. If quality production of D&B is what you are after, this is what you will get.

SchemaA Day Of Small Victories(Sub Slayers)

This EP starts with ‘Rat Bastard’, a bouncy, rave infused sound with a driving bass that would keep a field jumping in the early hours of a festival, dropping into a dubstep tempo the second time round to switch things up.’Le Brocqout’ is a straight up rubbery dubstep beat keeping you on toes with a hard edge that would pound into you on a big system. ‘Turn Off The Lights’ hits more of dirty house vibe with a nice bounce to it, dropping back to a dubstep beat at points. ‘Savage Henry’ is back into the thick of dubstep almost hitting a Datsik style of tune. The hardcore will be freaking out to this at a dubstep rave no doubt, Anyone into their bass-lines will appreciate this.

New Plymouth DIY imprint, Art Is Hard Records (thanks Cursive), have released their first compilation featuring nine of the South West’s finest indie and lo-fi acts. ‘Brink Of The Clouds’ – which comes wrapped in a snazzy t-shirt, no less – takes in the Pavement-like slouch of Dutch Husband; the studied brouhaha of Colours; They That Cried Wolf’s quasi-Maccabees strum; Cycling Season’s emasculated, lo-fi flute-pop; anthemic nonchalance from True Swamp Neglect; My Name Is Ian’s clipped Belle&Sebastian-esque balladeering; the blustering anti-pop racket of Cycle Schmeichel; Kinnie The Explorer and their harrowing tones; and Mojito Soundsystem’s slow-burning, theatrical melancholy. My money’s on the last 2, for what it’s worth. Great introspective stuff

Having played countless gigs this summer around the region Prog Metellers Lunix look set to release there first full EP, Automated Nightmare, drawing influence from the likes of early Iron Maiden & Dream Theatre which can be heard on tunes like Visions Of The Mind & Cult Of Anubis, There extended and building tracks layer complex guitar solo’s over driving,progressive baselines creating soundscapes which perfectly accompany the subject matter of each track raging from Religion,Afterlife & Mental Health. Blending together a fuller sound that you can loose yourself in as is expected with any decent modern Prog Metal act that deal with dark subject matter. When My First Tooth handed me a demo CD at End of the Road I knew I had something special in my hands. Firstly, they were among the loveliest folk I’d met in a long time and secondly my best mate had been raving about them after supporting them in Bournemouth. And I was not disappointed. The demo is a selection of songs from their forthcoming album Territories (released on Alcopop Records this month). The highlight is easily the beautiful soaring number Sleet and Snow. The harmoniously fragile vocals sail alongside the uplifting layered drums and guitars creating a truly haunting sound, reminiscent of a happier Elbow or a hipper Snow Patrol. Check it out for yourselves – they play Gloucester Guildhall on October 9, Mother’s Ruin in Bristol on October 21 and Timepiece in Exeter on November 5. (LW)

Another festival tip off, this time Bournemouth’s Animal Talent Show at Endorse it in Dorset. Dressed in frocks and wigs, they impressed with their energetic Weezer-esque lofi– vocals Stephen Malkmus would be proud of and pitch perfect guitars, which kept the raw energy without losing the plot. The band benefits massively from the addition of Dutch Husband guitarist Paul Jordan. It’s not his strumming which adds the icing to this cake but his mesmerizing drumming. The US has always been good at pumping out this highly-charged, yet considered screamo and this could be just what Britain has been waiting for. Some of ATS’s live tracks were recorded at the Wimborne Folk Festival but they’d fit in much better at ATP alongside the likes of Pavement and co. (LW)

It’s always a tearfully shitty day when the festival season comes to an end. So reminisce with me as I remind you of what you missed/relished towards the latter end of summer. First up, Punk’n’Bowl 5 (Lanes, Bristol, 15th Aug). Hosted for the first time in Brizzle, we were treated to a day of electric and acoustic prowess courtesy of the cream of the UK underground crop. THE ARTERIES were tight and intense, THE CUT UPS anthemic and charming, OK PILOT raunchy and ripped, APOLOGIES, I HAVE NONE warm and wonderful, CYNICS heartfelt and humble, YOU ME & THE ATOM BOMB grizzled and solid, ROOFTOPS grainy and gnarly, PACER upbeat and uptempo, HELEN CHAMBERS soft and soulful. Cheers!

At the other end of the social scale, Reading Festival (27-29th Aug) was a typically corporate charade (big screen TV ads between bands? Jeez Louise) although, I must confess, we did play too, so who the fuck am I to complain? Dwarfing everyone else on the bill in terms of loveability, innovation, visual ambition and delicately immense songs, were ARCADE FIRE. The Canadian septet have only just released ‘The Suburbs’ and already the likes of ‘We Used To Wait’ are flame-grilled cult classics, eliciting as much euphoria as ‘Funeral’-era material. Even the tweenage Reading milksops are converted. Job done! Other main stage treasures were indie-rock upstarts, THE MACCABEES, the Dylan-doffing sheen of THE WALKMEN, and a predictably irreverent and comical NOFX; while MODEST MOUSE and THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM were way too reserved/quiet to have much lasting effect. Over at the Lock-Up stage, CANCER BATS were wiping the floor with everyone (except a cliché-raddled GALLOWS perhaps) due to their hulking Dambuster guitar tones and Liam Cormier’s personable recklessness. Joyous. Which left AGAINST ME!, THE SKINTS, SICK OF IT ALL and ALKALINE TRIO to garner runners-up medals with sterling, stirring performances.

The annual Plymouth Punx Picnic threw up some nice surprises and some unintentionally droll asides (White Rabbit, 4th Sept). Brighton anarcho-punk trio, PRIMEVAL SOUP, made a fittingly wretched racket with a few ill-advised skankoid moments. Disappointingly, MENACE sounded sluggish and cringeworthy, especially on the absurd ‘Too Many Punks Are Dead’ – as if disproportionately less punks in the world will signal the end of civilization. We all die, mate, punk won’t protect us. EASTFIELD were a much brighter proposition – their ramshackle, mid-paced vignettes injected with humour and humility. I tend to avoid ska-core like the evil retrovirus that it is, but Bournemouth’s THE EXTINGUISHERS couldn’t give a quack about sonic snobs like me. Which, conversely, is why their politically diven pitter-patter and tight hardcore interludes, caught somewhere between Farse and The Casualties, were enjoyable if hugely derivative. They even did a very loyal Culture Shock cover (ask your crusty uncle). I almost choked on my memories. Ah, GOLDBLADE. What can you say about a band that have made a half-living out of occupying the middle ground between Oi! court jesters and punk rabble-rousers? Sure, it’s hard to take John Robb seriously when he’s prancing about with buff man-muscles on display (like Johnny Bravo come to life) but combined with terrace-chant refrains and endless allusions to social revolution, it made for a chirpy ride.

And, finally, there was the fun-for-all-the-family-fest that is Ivylive, set in the beautiful surroundings of Filham Park (Ivybridge, 10-12th Sept). In a nutshell: THE MAGIC NUMBERS (groovy), ATHLETE (drippy), COSMO JARVIS (dreary), LE CHAT NOIR (swarthy), GET CAPE. WEAR CAPE. FLY (folksy), THE BEDROOM PROJECT (fiery), KAT MARSH (sultry) and THE VAN DANIELS (paltry). And guess what? Very little rain at any of the above shindigs. Howzabout that then? See-ya bye.

Last month saw Porthtowan Eco Park become a mecca for superheroes, cartoon charters and crazy-looking people in unidentifiable fancy dress with the return of the Surfers Against Sewage Ball, themed Invinci-Ball, as their 20th anniversary celebration.
