  • RESCUE IN CONFINED SPACES

  • SCOPE Introduction Types of confined space Types of confined space rescue Dangers in the Confined Space Rescue Emergency Evacuation Methods(5 methods) Safety Precautions Conclusion

  • IntroductionConfined space rescue is a subset of technical rescue operations which recover victims trapped in a confined space.

Rescuing people in confined space is absolutely a challenging task to do . One must execute it with great deliberation

  • DuctsSewers & Closed Drains

  • Types of Confined Space Rescue

(1)Self rescueIn a self-rescue, the individual recognizes a critical condition and exits the space on his or her own. This is the preferred rescue method as confined space hazards can quickly incapacitate an individual.

(2)Non-entry rescueA non-entry rescue involves attempting to extricate an incapacitated person without having anyone else enter the confined space.

  • Types of Confined Space Rescue(3)Entry rescueThis is the last resort option as it has more personnel enter an area .Rescuers need to be aware of their surroundings and evaluate their plans if there is any change of the confined space.

  • (1)Natural disasters(2)Atmosphere risk(like the harmful substances leak which cause the concentration of harmful gases in the air skyrockets , which in turn harm the people)(3)Fear and loses Confidence

  • Emergency Evacuation Methods (1)Fore&Aft Method (2)Human crutch (3)3-Handed Seat (4)4-Handed Seat (5)Backward Drag

  • Fore&Aft Method

-Casualty is unable to walk.-One rescuer supports the casualty's back and another rescuer holds the casualty's both legs.-Casualty's Legs face the direction of the exit.

  • Human Crutch

-Casualty is able to walk with assistance.-They have to synchronise which leg to shoot out first when walking.

  • 3-Handed Seat-Casualty has one injured leg.-Casualty is too heavy for one rescuer.-Making a mini-seat for the casualty.-Support the injured leg(important!!!)

  • 4-Handed Seat

-Casualty is needed to be carried .-Casualty is too heavy for one rescuer to handle.

  • Backward Drag

-Casualty is too heavy to lift.-May not be suitable for casualty with chest injuries-Supports the casualty firmly and look back for any obstruction on the way.

  • Safety Precautions

(1)Ensure ventilation(2)Do not do rescuing alone ,find someone who is well-trained to help(3)Stay alert at all times(4)Do not be anxious ,always stay composed.(5)Follow proper and correct procedures

  • Conclusion

-Certified rescuer are needed to save people's lives.-Confined space rescue is always dangerous-Life is very fragile compared to the power of the nature!!

Hazardous Atmosphere Hydrogen Sulfide Carbon Monoxide Low Oxygen Count Explosive Atmosphere

    2) Fall Risk Slippery Ladders Rusty, unstable walkways Exhaustion leading to inattentiveness

    3) Mechanical Hazards Mechanical failure of safety equipments High pressure pipe blowouts 4) Flooding or Engulfment Potential Sudden gush of water Strong currents
