2030CurriculumProject(Pilot)CallforTeachingProposals,2016-2017AcademicYearBACKGROUNDTheurbanbuiltenvironmentisresponsibleforover70%ofallgreenhousegas(GHG)emissionsworldwide.Howwedesignbuildingsandcitiestodaywilldetermineiftheeffectsofclimatechangewillbemanageableorcatastrophic.ThehistoricagreementreachedattheCOP21UNClimateChangeConferenceinParissignalsanendtothefossilfuelera.Itcommitsnearly200countries–includingtheUS,China,India,andEUnations–tokeeptheglobalaveragetemperatureincreaseto“wellbelow2°Cabovepre-industriallevelsandtopursueeffortstolimitthetemperatureincreaseto1.5°C.”Inordertomeetthistarget,theworldmustreachzerofossilfuelCO2emissionsinthebuiltenvironmentbyabout2050,andzerototalglobalGHGemissionsbetween2060and2080.Municipalitiesallovertheworldarecurrentlyenactingstrategicurbanplanningmeasuresandadoptingadvancedbuildingcodesthatwillenablethemtomeetaggressivecarbonreductionpledges.StudentsgraduatingfromUSarchitectureandplanningprogramsin2020willenteraworkplaceinwhichdesigningforveryloworzerocarbonemissionswillbestandardpractice.Achievingzeroemissionsinthebuiltenvironmentisentirelypossible,butitisnotjustaboutmoreefficienttechnology,betterengineering,ormeetingstringentbuildingcodes.Fundamentally,itisamatterofdesign.Itrequiresarchitectsandplannerstothinkcreatively,critically,andholisticallyabouthowourbuildings,cities,andurbanspacesareconceived,shaped,constructed,andinhabited.THECALLTobestpreparefuturearchitectsandurbanplannerstodesignasustainableandzero-carbonworld,Architecture2030isseekingatransformativeinterventionindesigneducation.Wecalluponeducatorstosubmitinnovativeteachingproposalsthatwillfirmlyestablishenergyuse,emissions,andresiliencyasessentialconcernsofalldesignactivity,evaluation,anddialogatUSarchitectureandplanningschools.WHOMAYSUBMIT?AllfacultyandprogramadministratorsatUSarchitectureandplanningschools,undergraduateorgraduatelevelWHATDOESINNOVATIVESUSTAINABLEDESIGNEDUCATIONLOOKLIKE?Inrecentyears,dramaticimprovementsinsustainabledesigneducationhavebeenaresultofthecreativeandresourcefuleffortsofindividualfacultyanddepartmentleadership.Yet,significantgapsstillremain,especiallybetweenschoolsandacrosstopicareas.

Byexpandingandfullyintegratinglessonsinenergyuse,emissions,andresiliencyintothewidestrangeofprojects,topicareas,andacrossallyearlevels,schoolscan:

o Fosterearlierawarenessandongoingdialogueo Positionsustainabledesignconcernsasintegraltoallaspectsofdesigningbuildingsand

urbanplaces(planning,programming,formmaking,materiality,structure,facades,systems,construction,etc.)

o Establishperformance,emissions,andresiliencyasrelevantmodesofanalysisandcritiqueinalltopicareas

o Expandtheexistingfieldofsustainabledesignaesthetics,theories,andapproaches

Considerableopportunitiesexisttocapitalizeontheintrinsicfreedomandexperimentationofprofessionaldesignprograms.Schoolsareuniquelypositionedtoadvancesustainableplanninganddesignintoexcitingnewterritories,applications,andwaysofthinking.Innovationcanbeachievedrightnow,withcoursesthatarecurrentlybeingtaughtandwithinexistingcurricularstructures.Examplesinclude:

o Usingavailablesoftwaretoincorporatefundamentalaspectsofclimateandenergyanalysisintoall,andeventheearliest,planninganddesignstudios

o Reorderingthesequenceofrequiredcoursestointroduceclimate,resiliency,andenvironmentalqualityconcernsearlier,e.g.environmentalcontrolscouldprecedestructuresinanarchitecturecurriculum

o Integratingdesignstudiosandothercourseswithinayearlevel,byprovidinginstructionfromfacultyteamswithdiverseexpertise

o Incorporatingenergyandemissionsperformanceaspartofhistoricalanalysisandincasestudiesofdesignorplanningprecedents

o Criticallyassessingand/orreimaginingtheaestheticsofsustainableplanninganddesigno Evaluatingembodiedcarboninmaterials&methodsandstructurescourseso OfferingcoursesinUSand/orglobalenergypolicyandhistoryforarchitectsand

plannerso Developingeconomiccasestudiesforsustainableandresilientplanning,andzero

carbonbuildingsWHAT’SINITFORME?MYSCHOOL?Participantsinthe2030CurriculumProjecthavetheopportunitytomakemeaningfulandinfluentialchangesintheircoursesanddepartments,andtotransformthebroadercultureofsustainableplanninganddesigneducationnationwide.Forproposalsselectedforthispilotprogram,Architecture2030willsupportyourteachingeffortsby:

o Reviewingandprovidingconstructivefeedbackforproposedcoursesyllabiandprogram/curricularchanges

o Connectingfacultyanddepartmentstothelatestsoftwareandtrainingo Continuingtoexpandthe2030Palette(www.2030palette.org,seebelow)asalearning

resourceforsustainabledesigno Connectingfacultyanddepartmentswithlocalandregionalexpertsandprofessionals

o Publishingcontentyoudevelopaspartofthe2030Paletteo Connectingyoutootherparticipatingfacultyandprograms,andsharingteaching

resources,syllabi,andstudentworkWHATARETHESELECTIONCRITERIA?Proposalsmustconstituteameaningfulinnovationinthewaysustainabilityiscurrentlyaddressedindesigneducationattheapplicant’sinstitution.Preferencewillbegiventoproposalsthat:

o Expandsustainabilityconcernsintocoursetopicsoryearlevelswherethismaterialisnotadequatelyorhasnottraditionallybeenaddressedorintegratedintodesign

In2003,Architecture2030definedtheconnectionbetweenclimatechangeandtheglobalbuiltenvironment,recognizingthatbuildingsareresponsiblefor48percentoftotalUSenergyconsumptionandGHGemissions,and77percentoftotalUSelectricityconsumption.In2006,Architecture2030issuedthe2030Challenge,callingfora70percentreductioninenergyconsumptionfornewbuildingstoday,andincrementallyincreasingenergyreductiontocarbonneutralby2030.The2030ChallengehassincebeenadoptedbytheAmericanInstituteofArchitects(AIA),50percentofallUSarchitecturefirms,andnearly75percentofthetop30internationalarchitecture,engineering,andplanningfirms,helpingdriveaglobalshifttowardsachievingdramaticreductionsinenergyconsumptionandemissions.WHATISTHE2030PALETTE?The2030PaletteisArchitecture2030’sfreeonlinetoolforthedesignoflow-carbon/zero-carbonandadaptablebuiltenvironmentsworldwide.Itwascreatedtoassistdesignstudentsandprofessionalsinmeetingthetargetsofthe2030Challenge.The2030Palettepresentssustainableplanning,landscape,andarchitecturaldesignprinciplesandactionsthroughaninterconnectedcollectionofSwatches.Swatchesarecomplementedbyimagesofbuiltwork,in-depthinformationpages,andexhaustivelinkstoadditionalresources.Usersmayalsocreatecustompalettes,publishcontent,andshareideaswithothersintheirnetwork.Severalanalysistoolsalreadyconnecttothe2030Palette,suchasUCLA’sClimateConsultant.Autodesk’sInsight360andSefairaArchitecturewilldirectlylinktothePalettesoon.Architecture2030continuestoexpandthe2030Palettethroughnewswatchesandin-depthinformationpages,andwewillsoonbepublishingcontentgeneratedbyexpertusers.LINKShttp://architecture2030.org/http://www.2030palette.org/
