Insight: we have supporters in all kinds of organisations

Page 8: 202020 Vision & Office of Environment & Heritage NSW Masterclass presentation

We need to give them a louder voice so they get their (our) way when decisions are made

Page 9: 202020 Vision & Office of Environment & Heritage NSW Masterclass presentation

The best way to give them a louder voice is to get them together, saying the same thing.

We summarised the report as a release to media: ‘Where are all the Trees?’

Research - iTree

Went to 2000 media outlets. !Available to all councils as a free resource.

Go green with envyLWest suburbs, Sydney’s southeand east are little more thanaconcrete jungles, a new studychas revealed.h

A survey of the city’s treecanopy shows Botany Baychas fewer trees than anyhother suburb, with just 12 perocent leaf cover. c

Next comes nearby Rand-wick, with 14 per cent, andwbeachside Waverley is alsobnear the bottom with only 17nper cent. Other suburbspunder 20 per cent includeuAuburn, Marrickville, Hol-Aroyd and Strathfield.r

Meanwhile, anyone whowants a tree change withoutwleaving the city should headlnorth — Pittwater, Warrin-ngah and Ku-ring-gai top theglist with more than 50 perlcent tree cover. c

Residents in Lane Cove,Hunters Hill and Ryde enjoyHmore than 30 per cent treemcover, followed by Manly,cNorth Sydney, Penrith, Liv-Nerpool and Burwood.e

The report was put to-gether by 202020 Vision, anginitiative between business, igovernments and commun-gity groups to increase greenispace in urban areas by 20sper cent by 2020. The re-psearch was carried out by thesUniversity of Technology,USydney, using a software pro-Sgram called i-Tree Canopy. g

hitting the 20 per cent im-provement target in six yearswould be challenging.

“Western Sydney was

proportion of potentiallyplantable spaces, with Black-town, Camden, Fairfield, Liv-erpool and Penrith allboasting significant areas ofgrass-bare ground that couldpotentially be planted,” thereport said.

It advised that increasingthe tree canopy along a corri-dor from the eastern suburbsto Parramatta could helpmanage debilitating high

during summer. Susanne Hanke, who lives

at Avalon in Pittwater, saidthe tree-lined streets were ahuge part of the area’s attrac-tion. “The trees help make it aunique and tranquil environ-ment,” she said. “They bringlots of birds and wildlife, make it cooler in the summerand you really feel like you’reliving in a beautiful spot.”

Anthony Kachenko, fromthe National Urban ForestAlliance, said: “Benefits arereduced pollution, improvedair quality, decreased utilitycosts and better health.”
