RAeS Honours, Medals & Awards

The global aerospace community’s most prestigious and long-standing awards honouring achievement, innovation and excellence.

The Royal Aeronautical Society has been honouring outstanding achievers in the global aerospace industry since 1909, when Wilbur and Orville Wright came to London to receive the Society’s first Gold Medal. Over the years, honouring aerospace achievers in this way has become an annual tradition. The Society’s Awards Programme recognises and celebrates individuals and teams who have made an exceptional contribution to aerospace, whether it is for an outstanding achievement, a major technical innovation, exceptional leadership, or for work that will further advance aerospace.

RAeS Bronze Medal

Awarded for notable contributions to the advancement of aerospace art, science and engineering.

Dr Robina Coker FRCPConsultant in Respiratory Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital

Dr Coker is awarded the Society’s Bronze Medal for her pioneering work on the safety of air passengers with lung disease. Dr Coker first highlighted the need for guidelines on air passengers with lung disease in 1998. Since then, alongside her research work in the field, she has led a series of studies that provided the aviation medicine community with evidenced-based guidelines on the safety of air travel for those with lung disease. These widely-used guidelines ensure that those with lung disease have the opportunity to travel as air passengers when it is safe to do so.

After qualifying in medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London, Dr Coker completed postgraduate training with posts at the Royal Brompton, London Chest, Barts, Charing Cross and Whipps Cross hospitals. Her PhD (undertaken at the National Heart & Lung Institute and University College, London) focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of lung fibrosis. Since her appointment at Hammersmith Hospital in 1999 she has developed sub-specialty interests in interstitial lung disease, and in air travel and lung disease. In addition to her work as consultant and honorary senior lecturer in respiratory medicine she is currently clinical director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network, north west London. This has an annual budget of over £14m and supports clinical trials across north west London.

Awarded for notable contributions to the advancement of aerospace art, science and engineering.

Novasar Industry TeamThe Novasar Industry Team is awarded the Society’s Bronze Medal for the successful development of a commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite at a significantly lower cost than previous SAR satellites developed by national space agencies. This was achieved by using Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd’s low-cost satellite platform technology combined with a novel S-band radar payload from Airbus Defence and Space.

The NovaSAR project was a combined effort utilising the skills and experience from two of the leading space companies in the UK. Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) in Guildford was the mission prime and built the satellite platform. The novel S-band radar payload came from Airbus Defence and Space in Portsmouth. Technical leadership of the NovaSAR Industry Team was provided by Martin Cohen at Airbus Defence and Space and Ben Schwarz at SSTL for payload and platform aspects of the system respectively. The team comprised experts from all the fields necessary to design, build, launch and operate the UK’s first spaceborne radar imaging satellite. Over ten years the team took many problems back to first principals to engineer a system with a unique level of capability relative to the small size of spacecraft.

AW159 Digital Automatic Flight Control System TeamThe AW159 Digital Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) Team is awarded the Society Bronze Medal for designing and developing a novel Digital AFCS for the AW159 helicopter that provides a step change in capability. Among the novel features, not previously available, are a collective safety function that automatically protects the transmission and engine; a cable hover mode that provides greater reliability in more challenging environmental conditions; and maintenance and diagnostic capabilities that support improved aircraft availability.

The team comprised engineers from both the UK and Italian Flight Control Systems teams, co-located at the Yeovil site, bringing together a range of skills and experience of helicopter AFCS as well as software design and verification across a number of military and civil platforms. The mixture of skills and experience was key to ensuring the successful implementation of a modern digital AFCS into an air vehicle with a heritage in excess of 40 years. With the project fully launched in April 2014, the team worked with dedication to meet the demanding schedule, achieving first flight within 15 months of the full project launch, and reaching final aircraft-level certification in mid-2017.
