I suppose fiddlers have an advantage over say, golfers, in that they can stay indoors to practice, right?! We had the opportunity to attend the first ever Dunsmuir Railroad Days Fiddle Contest in June. We are fast approaching some larger fiddle contests. The Willamette Valley Fiddle Contest is Friday, August 3, at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis OR. That would give you a chance to get up into the cooler environs of Oregon. September 21 and 22 will see the 42 nd Annual Fiddlin’ Down the Tracks contest in Tehachapi. And, of particular importance to Tex and me, the 36th Annual Western Open Fiddle Championships will be held October 25-27 at the Red Bluff Elks Lodge. I know these are not the only events around, and again want to encourage you to seek opportunities to submerge yourself in the music and the atmosphere around old-time fiddling that is always so wonderful and soul-restoring. Former California fiddle champion and now an Oregon fiddle champion Grant Wheeler placed 5th in the Adult Division andwas announced as the “Best Entertainer Ever” in the certified round. John Francis, former California champion and NationalGrand Champion, won the Senior Division.

Jim French and Ben LiaBraaten accompanied fiddlers again with their guitars. Alex dePue, former national twin champion, provided the entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights with Jim French backing him up.

A special tribute was held on Wednesday night for fiddle family members who passed on since last year. Bill Whitfield andJoan Pollard were among those remembered.

Randy Pollard, former national champion from California, and his wife Kelly attended the Thursday evening performanceto see former California fiddler Evelyn Horner, his first fiddle teacher, receive the Oldest Fiddler Award. Evelyn gave adelightful performance playing and singing “Compadres of the Old Sierra Madre”.

Tallon, Eddie and Lori Sandoval dropped in for a quick visit. Tallon broke his arm the week before Weiser so he was unableto compete this year.

Three fiddlers from Nevada made the trek to Weiser: Leah Bowen (Junior), Fiona McNeil (Junior Junior), and Randy Warner(Senior). The number of contestants was down again this year, to 160 from 180. But the weather was perfect and the extrafree time between classes allowed more time to jam and nap.

Our regular 4th Sunday District 9 jams continued fromspring into summer with slightly smaller turn-outs goingalong with the hot weather. Long time pickers andsingers were joined by some new visitors, both inplaying music and in sharing lunch.

In the 3rd week of June some of our members againfound themselves in Weiser, Idaho for the National OldTime Fiddlers' Contest. We found fewer olderCalifornia fiddlers making the trek, but our youngercontingent made good presentations.

Congratulations especially to the Quales, from ourdistrict. Miles Quale took 4th place in the 17 and UnderSwing Fiddle division, with an especially strong 2ndround. Teo Quale won the 1st place ranking in theNational Old Time Fiddlers Junior-Junior division.

And younger Niko Quale competed in that sameJunior-Junior division. Niko's older brothers are givinghim really stiff competition--for now .Specialacknowledgement goes to their parents, Marie andChris, for fostering such musicianship in their household.

For several years now the California State Old TimeFiddle Association District 10 has participated in amonthly jam at the Ely Stage Stop on Soda Bay Roadin Kelseyville, California. District 10 is now helpingto support an old time and bluegrass festival tosupport the Anderson Marsh Interpretive Associationand the Lake County Historical Society.

District 8Sus Corez

At the recent Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest, which is anannual mecca for Southland bluegrassers and pickers, District8 hosted a jam stage where attendees found cool water, shadeand mighty fine music to share. Charletta Erb and Jim Frieryled the charge and a good time was had by all.

Our latest membership stands at 168 with younger talentstarting to discover the twice monthly jams and delving intoa rich musical past. We use craigslist.com to announce thejams as well as various social media channels. We are alsobrainstorming ideas to spread the word about our Sundayevents, perhaps playing in local parks in a casual setting…witha handful of brochures!

Part 2 of the well attended workshop “How to play leadguitar” was led by our own Steve Linsky. Our workshops areheld one hour before the Sunday jams and we are fortunate tohave fellow members willing to share their knowledge in theseworkshop settings.

We are preparing for the end of summer barbecue and lookforward to the home made side dishes our members cook up.We’ll start organizing committees and volunteers for thisannual event in early August.
