GAME OF RUNS• A 23-0 run by the home team doomed theHawks at Saint Louis. SJU was within 36-35 at13:05 before the Billikens scored 23 straightpoints over six minutes to take a 56-35 lead.Taylor Funk ended the drought for theHawks on a three-pointer with 6:38 left, but itwas too much for SJU to overcome in the 68-57 loss• The Hawks appeared to be suffering thesame fate vs. Richmond as the Spiders ran off16 straight points in the first half, staking a 21-10 lead and then a 30-15 edge. SJU turnedthings around in the second half to post the74-70 win• Other notable scoring droughts:

• SJU scored 59 points vs. Wagner; went withouta FG in the final 4:53 of the game

• George Mason had a 19-0 run in six minutesduring the final 10 minutes of the game

• GW closed out the game w/ 13 straight and a16-4 run in the final five minutes

• St. Bonaventure took a 17-1 lead and had a 39-12 halftime lead

• After SJU had a strong start, Dayton used a 14-0 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half, andthen a 13-2 run midway through the second

TO THE POINT• After scoring 70-plus points in eight of theirfirst nine games, the Hawks averaged just 54.2in six games from Dec. 8 to Jan. 9• The low was 45 points vs. Loyola Chicago butthankfully, the Ramblers scored only 16 pointsin the first half and finished with 42 in thegame, as SJU came away with the win• The 45 points was SJU’s lowest output sinceit scored 40 against Charlotte (3/9/13)

SLOW START• SJU’s 0-4 start in the A-10 matched the 2010-11 season when the Hawks went 0-8 to beginconference play. That team won four of its lastsix as it reached the semifinals of the A-10Championship• SJU has often found success in the latter halfof the season. Last year’s squad was 4-5 inJanuary but went on to post a 6-3 record inFebruary

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL• SJU is fourth in the nation in turnovers pergame (9.6) and fifth in fewest number ofturnovers (202); Virginia is the NCAA’s leaderwith 8.4• Despite a season-high 14 turnovers, theHawks came away with a win over Richmond• The Hawks have committed 10-plusturnovers 11 times this season, and in 10 ofthe last 12 games• Freshman Jared Bynum leads the A-10 inassist/turnover ratio with 2.6 and is ranked45th in the nation. HANDS OFF• As they have done the past few seasons, theHawks have limited their fouls and rank 15thin the nation with fewest fouls (308)• SJU ranks eighth in the NCAA in personalfouls per game with 14.7

TWO SIDES OF THE BALL• Early on, Phil Martelli was concerned aboutthe Hawks’ defense, as SJU was giving up 76.8points per game through the first nine • That seemed to be rectified as the Hawksallowed an average of 56 points in the threegames (Villanova, Loyola, Wagner) leading upto the conference opener• But that progress suffered a setback as SaintJoseph’s saw George Mason score 85 points• On the year, SJU’s foes are now averaging72.6 points per game

SLIPPING AWAY• The loss to GW marked the third double-digitlead lost by the Hawks this year• SJU had a 12-point lead with 12:41 to go inthe first half but saw GW turn in a big secondhalf en route to the 70-56 win• Against Temple they led by 11 with 3:29 toplay in the first half but suffered the 77-70 loss• At William & Mary, SJU held a 20-point lead at18:38 of the second half but saw the Tribe rallyto the 87-85 win

COOLING OFF• The Hawks started the season as one of thebetter three-point shooting teams in thenation but have since cooled off • SJU has made under 30 percent of its three-point attempts in eight of the last 13 games• The Hawks are converting 75-of-282 (26.5percent) from behind the arc in the past nine. The low point was a 0-for-13 effort in the firsthalf at St. Bonaventure • Saint Joseph’s bucked that trend when itconnected on 12-of-28 threes (42.9%) in thewin over Richmond, led by a 5-for-8 perform-ance from Charlie Brown• The Hawks followed that by shooting 3-for-24 from three-point range vs. Penn

DEAN OF COACHES• Phil Martelli is in his 24th season as headcoach and is the dean of the Atlantic 10’scoaches. He owns an overall record of 439-321and is SJU’s all-time leader in victories• Martelli owns a 214-170 record in Atlantic 10play, which ranks second all-time and firstamong active coaches for conference wins• His career total of 439 wins is also second all-time (to Temple’s John Chaney) and the topnumber for active coaches in the A-10• Martelli is one of 25 active D-1 coaches whoare their schools’ all-time wins leaders

THE HAWKOne of the most famous mascots in college

sports, the Saint Joseph’s Hawk is in its 63rdyear in 2018-19.

The Hawk is best known for staying in con-stant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing theSaint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will NeverDie.”

The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was origi-nated by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 sea-son. Brennan, an ex-Marine and SJU cheer-leader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The stu-dent government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk onJanuary 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has notmissed a men’s basketball game since that first season.

In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its “fly-ing” in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University’s athletic teams, helped tospawn the school’s familiar slogan “The Hawk Will Never Die!” A few years ago,ESPN used a “flap-o-meter” on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph’s gameto estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulationgame.

The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation thattravels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a tuitionscholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process duringthe previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men’sbasketball team and travels with the squad.

Domenic Godshall is serving as the Saint Joseph's University Hawk mas-cot for the 2018-19 season, becoming the 39th student to represent theUniversity in this role. He is a senior sports marketing major from Lititz, Pa.

ON THE AIRTV/VIDEO: Saint Joseph’s fans will be able to watch all 31 men’s basketballregular-season games either on television or through digital media. A total of21 Hawks’ games this season will be televised nationally while 10 will bestreamed digitally. Nine games will appear on the subscription-based ESPN+.

RADIO: All 31 Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball regular-season games will bebroadcast on radio, with Talk Radio 1210 WPHT airing the majority of games. Itmarks the second consecutive year of a partnership with the station.
