The Battle of Hastings, 950 years ago

Some 950 years ago, the Norman Duke William vanquished the Anglo-Saxon King Harold at

the Ba3le of Hasngs (14th October 1066). The ba3le marked the beginning of the Conquest

that was to offer him the English throne. He was crowned King of England on Christmas Day

1066. On the occasion of this anniversary year, Calvados will be holding a vast programme of

events to relive the highlights of the Middle Ages in a recreaonal, fesve and family

atmosphere.

The enre programme of events associated with the 950th anniversary

can be found on line at:

The Bayeux Manuscript The Bayeux Manuscript will be honoured in 2016.

This compilaon of a hundred songs from

Normandy and Ile de France, composed in the late

15th century, will be a source of inspiraon for

associaons in Bayeux, and for pupils from the

town's music and fine arts schools. School pupils

will also be familiarised with medieval singing and

music throughout the school year, in order to

prepare a show they will present with support

from Bayeux Intercom. Concerts, exhibions,

workshops and conferences will be organised up

to June 2016. www.bayeux-bessin-

Medieval fair at Touques 25th/26th June // Touques Touques will be taking a plunge back to the me

when it was a highly acve trading port, protected

by a forfied castle which was also one of the

principal places of residence for the Dukes of

Normandy. Touques was the second largest town

in the Pays d'Auge. What's more, once crowned

King of England, William the Conqueror landed

there to inspect his Norman duchy. www.mairiedetouques.fr

William the Conqueror’s comic strip Exhibition: The epic adventure

from June to December // Bayeux

From June to December 2016, the Bayeux

Medieval fair of Château Ganne 9th/10th July // La Pommeraye The village of La Pommeraye, located in Suisse

Normande, is home to the impressive vesges of

the fortress of Château-Ganne, a site steeped in

history and former home to Radolf de

Pommereuil, one of William the Conqueror's

companions. In the 19th century, the site was

transformed into a decorave garden and many

plant species were introduced... offering the

enre site a highly romanc allure. Every summer,

the château is brought back to life during the

Ornavik builds its Motte-and-Bailey Castle - July // Hérouville-Saint-Clair Located within the Caen conurbaon, Ornavik tells

the story of the birth of Normandy from Rollo the

Viking (year 911) to William the Conqueror (year

1066). Visitors are taken through three

chronological areas: Carolingian, Viking and ducal.

At the entrance to the village, there is a

Carolingian house made of earth, then a large dry

earth farm currently under construcon, women

working in the vegetable garden and carpenters

working on pieces of wood. Then the narrow path

leads down through the forest towards the Viking

island with its tradional houses and camp... the

tour ends in the ducal area.

This summer, Ornavik will be offering its visitors a

life-size demonstraon in the form of the

construcon of an 11th century mo3e-and-bailey

castle. Ornavik's mo3e-and-bailey castle, a

defensive structure, symbolic of seigniorial

authority, will overlook the wood and the River

Orne from the top of the site. Its construcon is

based on that of Norman castral mounds. The

mo3e-and-bailey castle was useful for

withstanding the type of weapons used at the

me (knives, arrows...). A hundred re-enactors

from across Europe will be taking part in the

construcon site. www.ornavik.fr

Medieval tours The Bayeux tourist office organises guided tours

all year long. In Argences: from mid-June to mid-

September, 12 tours are programmed, including

the Moulin de la Porte watermill (1025),

Romanesque churches and the site of the Ba3le of

Val-ès-Dunes. Guided tours of Caen Castle

throughout the summer...

Caen celebrates the 950th anniversary of Hastings

1066 was an important year for Caen, with the

consecraon of the Ladies' Abbey, the laying of

the foundaon stone of the Men's Abbey and

William the Conqueror's departure from his castle

in Caen, to head for England, where he was

victorious at the Ba3le of Hasngs and crowned

King of England in London on the 25th of

December the same year.

In 2016, Caen will be proposing a vast programme

of events and demonstraons to celebrate this

950th anniversary: medieval banquet at the

castle, torchlight parade between the abbeys,

exhibions (including a photography exhibion in

the Exchequer Hall in Caen Castle, organised by

the Normandy Museum and focusing on medieval

architecture), visits and shows in both abbeys...

And it is even said that a few surprises may well

be in store for anyone of the name of William or

Malda! More news coming soon on the Caen

Tourist Office website www.caen-tourisme.fr.

Join in Sherlock Holmes’investigation Conan Doyle, whose name originally comes from

Vicomte). The me seems right to organise an

intrigue and treasure hunt in which all visitors can

parcipate and see how they fare compared to

Sherlock Holmes himself. The intrigue will be

unveiled next March in the form of a period

newspaper and a specifically devoted website.

around the 950th anniversary of William the

Conqueror's departure, in August 2016!

Normandy Impressionist Festival

The Normandy Impressionist Fesval offers exhibions, muldisciplinary events (music,

theatre, dance, etc.) and fesvies for all secons of the public. This innovave fesval open

to one and all was created in 2010. Its third edion will be held from 16 April to 26

September 2016.

Preview of the first exhibions.

CAEN Musée de Normandie à Caen // John Batho Histoire de couleurs A French colourist photographer, John Batho’s

sensibility is very close to that of the

Impressionists. His work takes colour, light and

their variaons as its primary focus but it also

embraces the landscapes of Normandy, of which a

new series is dedicated to Honfleur and the lilies

at Giverny. His work at Giverny raises the queson

of the pictorial nature of the photographic image.

Fine Arts Museum at Caen - 16th April - 26 th Septembre 2016 // Frits Thaulow (1847-1906), paysagiste par nature The museum exhibion will be a first retrospecve

of the work of Frits Thaulow (1847–1906), leader

of the Norwegian painters in France during the

years of the Impressionists and

Posmpressionists. A cousin of Edvard Munch and

the brother-in-law of Gauguin, he discovered in

Paris the revoluon iniated by Monet in painng

in 1874. Taking nature as its central theme, his

body of work is characterized by “pleinairisme”

and “atmospheric” painng that constutes an

ecological and humanist vision of the countryside

typical of Scandinavian culture.

ESAM (Ecole Supérieure d'Arts et Medias) – May > June 2016. Taking the portrait as its theme, the exhibion will

mobilize the teachers and students at the Ecole

Supérieure d'Arts et Médias de Caen/Cherbourg

and the Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre

/ Rouen in the creaon of art projects in the

public space. The outcome of this collecve and

interacve process will be a mul-site exhibion

of contemporary artworks in the public space,

which can be visited and appreciated in the

related schools.

Abbaye-aux-Dames //Peindre en Normandie. The collecon will be presenng an exhibion of

40 painngs on the theme of “Leisure and labour,

from the figure to the figurine, natural poses”. The

exhibion will be divided into four secons: La

Ferme Saint-Siméon, the seaside, the Norman

farm and along the Seine. Each will deal with

social life, whether in leisure me or at work, or

perhaps both together.

Artothèque // Alone / together The theme of the portrait and self-portrait is a

very ferle one given the changes that are taking

place in our society (the logic of networks,

technological developments, the importance of

communicaon, etc.) and their consequences on

the individual. A young arst will be offered a

residence in order to produce new works on this

theme.

HONFLEUR Musée Eugène Boudin à Honfleur -25th

June> 3rd October 2016 / Being Young at the Time of the Impressionists (1860–1910) Bringing portraits and genre scenes together, this

exhibion will focus on youth, from the arms of

the mother to those of one’s future partner, in all

the different aspects evoked during the years

1860–1910, with special a3enon given to

examples linked with Normandy. The tradion

that was heir to the eighteenth century and

official portraiture, which transformed models

into mythological and religious heroes, will be

represented. The aesthec noveles of naturalism

will be presented with different facets from

childhood to youth.

CONDE SUR NOIREAU Musée Charles Léandre à Condé-sur-Noireau - 25 juin au 15 octobre 2016 // Model Painters, from 1850 to 2000 The exhibion will present self-portraits, portraits

and genre scenes by Norman arsts, from the

most famous, such as Jean-François Millet,

Maurice Denis, Jean Dubuffet, Fernand Léger and

Jean Hélion, to the least known (Louis Bulot and

others).

A second secon in the museum chapel will bring

together a rare collecon of 30 or so original

photographs of Claude Monet, showing him in his

private life, with his family and friends.

TROUVILLE 18th June to 25th September // The Villa Montebello Museum pays homage to Robert Demachy Robert Demachy (1859-1936) was one of the

world's most famous photographers. Forerunner

of the French school of arsc photography (a

movement now referred to as "pictorialism"), he

relentlessly strove to have the creave potenal

of this medium acknowledged. He is parcularly

renowned for his excellent command of

pigmentaon processes, which were highly

popular development techniques among

pictorialists for they enabled direct intervenon

on the posive proof in order to "interpret" it (i.e.

offer it an arsc dimension). This exhibion will

reunite a hundred photographs, most of which

have never before been displayed.

What’s new in 2016

8 May 2016 : opening of the Memorial to Wartime Civilians

Falaise offers an original insight into wartime civilian life The Second World War killed more civilians than it

did soldiers.

How did they live through and, for many, survive

this tragedy that took 65 million vicms across the

globe? This new museum, the Memorial to

Warme Civilians, is one of its kind across the

globe and will focus on the queson of life and

survival in mes of war, in Normandy and

elsewhere. The region of Normandy paid the price

of France's liberaon. It is me we paid homage to

the civilian populaon. An original and rarely

covered subject. In Normandy, the ba3le began

early morning on the 6th of June 1944, to

connue over three months with two million

soldiers, amidst whom one million civilians strove

to survive. Around 150,000 Normans were forced

to leave their homes and an esmated 20,000

were killed during the ba3le, most of them vicms

of the bombardments. Yet, accounts of mes of

war essenally focus on the combat that opposed

military forces; consideraon of the civilian's

posion, although a central witness to events, an

unarmed and powerless vicm, appears

secondary. However, the speechless expression of

these martyrs is a form of memory in its own right

and the me has come, in the wake of the 70th

anniversary of the D-Day Landings, to reveal,

explore and tell, thanks to the last surviving eye

witnesses.witnesses.witnesses.witnesses.

To those who To those who To those who To those who succeeded in rebuilding and relivingsucceeded in rebuilding and relivingsucceeded in rebuilding and relivingsucceeded in rebuilding and reliving....

With 35 million civilian deaths for 30 million

military losses, the Second World War marked a

turning point. For the first me in the history of

world conflict, the number of civilian vicms

exceeded that of military losses.

This horrifying stasc held true for all late 20th

and early 21st century conflicts.

classical for the first, more modern on the second

floor. The top level offers a slightly smaller

apartment but with its own small pao. They are

all equipped with a fireplace and astonishing old

lighng fixtures, unearthed "here and there" by

the owner. The comfortable ground-floor lounge

with library, fireplace and an honesty bar is at

guests' enre disposal. The basement and vaulted

cellar can be privased for business breakfasts or

lunches. Laurence du Tilly offers a range of

complementary services: meal delivery, fireplace

kit, safe Wi-Fi connecon and even a road book

for some unforge3able tours of Calvados... The

ideal address for your personal or professional

travel.

Gastronomic delights A revival for the Jeannette madeleines

A bit like "Proust's madeleine" for the inhabitants

of Caen, the company that produces these

tradional small sponge cakes has been offered a

new lease of life thanks to its employees and its

corporate rescuer, and also to local solidarity.

Created in 1850, the Biscuiterie Jeanne3e

employed up to 250 people in 1985. In the 1990s,

its producon plummeted due to European

compeon. A^er a few difficult years, the

Normandy-based producon plant was forced into

compulsory liquidaon in 2013. However, in 2015,

a corporate rescuer drew many investors

together, in parcular thanks to crowdfunding,

and a new producon, with a disnct taste of

victory, has been launched.

The new recipe, presented in September 2015

during the Foire de Caen internaonal fair, is

available in a range of flavours: vanilla, almond,

pistachio and citrus fruit. A luxury range is also

available in Damask Rose and exoc citrus

(Amanatsu, Kaffir lime, Tangor, Yuzu) flavours. The

bouque is open every day on the producon site

in Démouville (near Caen) and on-line orders can

be made via the website:

Chez Paulette, in Bayeux This new tearoom-small restaurant located near

the cathedral is a fesval of colours with its

Formica tables, vintage Arcopal crockery,

deliciously retro wallpaper and "bric-a-brac"

objects throughout its small adjoining lounges. It

is decidedly Bessin's an-moroseness address.

And on the menu, a family-friendly canteen with

dishes of the day, all home-made: soup, bagels,

tarts, salads and delicious desserts. Sandrine and

Virginie extend a truly warm welcome. Chez

The Brasserie de La Lie, Saint-Rémy-sur Orne Along the Vélo France3e® cycle route that links

Calvados with Charente-Marime, a pleasant

brasserie offers a range of cerfied organic beers

with disncve labels with a typically Norman hint

of humour: Auprès de ma Blonde, La Caene3e,

L’ambrée du Hameau, Quai des Brunes and, over

the fesve season, Ça sent le Sapin. Erica and

François Vassout, along with Louis-Pierre

Rémondin, have succeeded in a3racng a number

of Normandy-based professionals, restaurants,

organic food stores... But you can also buy direct

at the producon plant sales point which is open 7

days. h3ps://sites.google.com/site/bierelalie

Le Sainte-Thérèse in Lisieux

The occasion of the canonisaon of Thérèse of

Lisieux's parents on the 18th of October 2015

offers new prospects for returning to visit this

sanctuary town, via the Blue Line on the ground

that reunites all sites associated with Thérèse -

and why not relish in a taste of the local speciality,

appropriately named the Sainte-Thérèse:

this creamy sweet speciality is made of a biscuit

base, exoc fruits, rose-flavoured mousse and

white chocolate bavarois. It is on sale at the

Blandiot pâsserie, located near the Lisieux

Cathedral. This heart-shaped dessert is made from

a recipe devised by trainee pâssiers from the

Saint-Thérèse de la Guerche catering school in

Bri3any (Ille et Vilaine). Pâsserie Blandiot 63
