Steve Harper is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London, in Automotive Design. He also is a qualified

Automotive Engineer and has 40 years experience of working for all the major automotive manufacturers.

He has experience of working in many parts of the world including throughout Europe, plus, Sweden, US, Thailand,

Brazil, Indonesia and China.

Steve is the Owner and Founder of SHADO DESIGN Ltd . First established in 1986, it originally operated in

Germany, Austria and the UK, primarily involved in Transport and Product Design, but also working in Film & TV

Storyboard Design and Editing.

SHADO DESIGN now is a fully fledged Design Consultancy, based in the UK, the essence of the company is to

provide a comprehensive range of Artistic, Film & Design skills throughout the World.

Defined as a ”Futurist Visionary”, Steve has steered SHADO DESIGN to become a well respected company, which

has been responsible for many exciting new concepts, as well as creating the practical solutions to achieve those

concepts.

TRANSPORT DESIGN

Over the years Steve has been commissioned to create various Design Projects in a wide span of Industries. From Cars, Vans, Trucks

& Buses, all the way up to multi-million Dollar Flight Training Simulators. All of the designs have maintained a strong design philosophy

of being Original, Practical and Beautiful, whatever their role.

Good Design is a challenge, a blend of Creative Inspiration, Practical Solutions, Strong Leadership and an eye for Cost and Detail.

It is also about listening and interpretation. So when working with a new Client, even on a type of project we have never worked on

before, we listen. As we bring our experience from many other projects & disciplines, we can often help the Client look at their own

product with ‘fresh eyes’. Ultimately this can create new unique solutions which allows for greater improvements for their business.

We believe that all Design is for People, their needs, their aspirations and should provide solutions which can enrich their lives.

SO, WHO IS STEVE HARPER?


THE EARLY YEARS

Born in 1958, and educated at King Edwards Five Ways Grammar School in Birmingham.

1964

Influenced by the creativity of the 1960s, and Cars - as a 3rd generation of Longbridge Car Workers


1975

He began work as an Austin Technical Apprentice in 1974, studying Automotive Engineering. Joined the

BL Motorsport Promotions team and took part in the launch of the TR7 Rally debut in 1976. A self taught

artist/Stylist, then began working in the BL Styling Studio in 1977 under the guidance of Harris Mann,

and to the Royal College of Art in 1979 - 80. Was part of the team which designed the Austin Metro, and

is featured in the BMIHT Film ‘The Metro Story’.

THE EARLY YEARS

Sent by Austin-Morris to the Royal College of Art in 1979 to further my studies in Car Design.

My final project when I graduated in 1980, was a study for a replacement of the Austin-Morris Princess.

Then in 1989 I had the chance to design my first real design icon …. The Ford Escort RS Cosworth


The sketching & designing continued in earnest, and by the end of January 1991 the theme for the MG

MGF had evolved, my second generation of work for MG

In fact I was actually working on

2 cars at the same time, the MG

model and the Rolls Royce

Silver Seraph / Bentley Arnage.


However my desire for sports cars didn’t stop there. Later in 1991, I designed this in my spare time ….

The motorbike powered Grinnall Scorpion 3 ….. and later in 1999 the Scorpion 4


1992 - Beijing

In 1993 I formed my own Consultancy SHADO, working first in Brasil, Indonesia, Thailand & UK, before

moving to VOLVO Sweden in 2000, as a Chief Designer.

VOLVO CARS DESIGN STUDIO – GÖTEBORG (2000 – 2008) One of my most notable assignments was as the Platform Chief Designer for all of the Current & Niche Vehicles within VOLVO PVS

Design, my responsibility was to ensure the ’Red Thread’ of consistent VOLVO Holistic & Strategic Design Language was mainta ined,

throughout all of the Projects under my guidance, to create a Harmony of VOLVO Brand Design.

My ’portfolio’ of projects over those 8.5 years, included all Model Year changes, for both Exterior & Interior design, on the Current range of

VOLVO Cars Products, plus, developments of new Niche products, and the Design responsibility for all of the Accessory products on

those programs.

Managing all aspects from Concept through Design & Development, Production Execution, the Quality Processes and as a Business

Project Team member (establishing Project Cost, Planning, Content, Balancing & Timing) for the:

• 2010 C70 Exterior & Interior Design + Supervision of 2010 C30 Project

• 2009 S80 L for China, Interior Design

• 2008 S40 & V50 Exterior & Interior Design

The 2003 VOLVO S60R & V70R was a fully integrated project which was not

only for the design, but also involved Steve in the Road Testing & Development

process where all details of the car were create and proven before launch


The 2010 VOLVO C70 was typical of many projects during that period,

being created and managed by Steve, throughout its Business, Design,

Production Engineering & Tooling phases.

During 2010 – 11, I moved to Changchun, China, with FAW. My responsibility was to oversee the design integration of

the HongQi limousine Interior, and also the preparation and development for a 2nd Luxury vehicle, as an Exterior scale

model and a full size Interior Mock Up

Since June 2010, I have been performed a key role , working for the Chinese Motor Industry, as a Mentor and Project

Leader for several Design Projects.


At the beginning of 2011 an interesting opportunity came knocking. I had already worked 4 times for

FORD, 3 times for VOLVO……. And now a 3rd Generation at MG

With SAIC in Shanghai during 2011 - 12, I led the design development of one Production Car Project the

AP13, which became the MG GT, and also a dedicated group of the MG Design Team which created the

MG ICON Concept Car for the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.


The MG ICON Concept Car was developed in Shanghai, and then I supervised the show car being built in Japan.


Most recently in China I had been working for GEELY Design Studio, on a number of Production & Concept Car Projects


Products from Concept through to Prototype, creating so many different types of vehicles, with imagination and flair

…. I never give up Designing …..


In February 2013, I became a joint owner / partner in a new concept electric vehicle project. Which takes a revolutionary approach to the

design and manufacture of lightweight electric vehicles.

BAYcycle concept combines imaginative design with thoughtful use of materials and technology, as well as offering the potential for local

manufacture anywhere in the UK and beyond.

Since the inception of the concept, the Design team has created, scale models, an ergonomics evaluation Interior seating Buck, a fully

digital computer model of the design theme, together Vehicle & Business Cost Packs and Project Plan, as well Full Size Prototype and a

unique Brand image & philosophy..


Last year I completed a full working EV prototype vehicle, which began in 2014. The SHADO INSPIRATION EV has been designed from the

‘Ground up’, from Concept sketches, through ALIAS surface development over our own Technical Package, to the produce Master Tooling

models by CNC, prepare moulds and hand modelled detailed parts. Then Final Assembly over our own Chassis, complete with all doors,

seats and trim details. Meanwhile in parallel there has been Suppliers identified, Parts procured along with Road & Component Testing of the

vehicle to meet ECE M1 regulations.


Over the last year, amongst my projects was an opportunity to develop further a vehicle which I had designed in 2012 for THAIRUNG UNION

CARS. Creating both the Styling and Body Engineering of the TRANSFORMER for low volume production, for 2016, we further developed the

product as I guided the company through the process of facelifting and remodelling the vehicle for increased volumes & sales.

The TRANSFORMER II project began in September 2015 and was launched in March 2016 in Bangkok, where I led the launch event as well

as designing the costumes for the Promotional Team
