Rajammal Ram Arts and Culture

Rajammal Ram is the founder and director of

the Kala Nilayam School of Dance. For more

than 40 years, she has passionately promoted

Indian culture in Edmonton through classical

Indian and folk dance. Ram is an executive

member of the Edmonton Folk Arts Council,

Canadian Kerala Cultural Association, and

Council of India Societies of Edmonton.

She has supported fundraising ventures to benefit the Mental

Health Foundation of Edmonton, One World Centre, Edmonton

Food Bank, and many others. Her talent has been showcased at

events that include the Journey through Asia, Rhythms of World

Exhibit, and 2001 World Track and Field Games.

Matthew Wood Arts and Culture

Matthew Wood “aka Creeasian” is an artist

as well as a youth worker and dedicated

community organizer. A dancer and deejay,

he shares his talent and passion for hip hop

culture and social change in innovative and

inspiring ways. His efforts have especially

impacted high-risk youth in the inner city.

Wood created the weekly public hip hop

block party event, CyperwildYEG, to provide a safe creative space

for people to come together to express themselves artistically

through dance, song, visual arts, and storytelling. Wood brings

hip hop to the Boyle Street Education Centre, as well as across

Alberta, where he works to break down stereotypes and build

inclusive communities that celebrate diversity.

Dr. Rob Agostinis Community Service

Dr. Rob Agostinis is the founder and past

president of the Terwillegar Riverbend

Advisory Council, which was integral to

building the community’s recreation centre.

Dedicated to providing opportunities

through community service, Agostinis was

instrumental in establishing the South West

Edmonton Farmers Market, Edmonton Youth

Talent Show, and other events. He cofounded the South West

Edmonton Seniors’ Association and the Terwillegar Riverbend

Soccer Association, and serves as the Oak Hills Community League

president. In addition to numerous other volunteer roles, he is

an integral part of the Brander Gardens ROCKS (Reaching Out

to Community Kids) collaborative and the community working

group of the EndPoverty Edmonton Task Force.

Don Baergen Community Service

Don Baergen has supported the positive

integration of newcomers to Canada for more

than three decades through his work at the

Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers.

He has single-handedly helped more than

10,000 people settle and integrate, providing

steadfast support well beyond work hours or

requirements. His tireless, compassionate

example has motivated and inspired colleagues, practicum

students, and volunteers, to provide meaningful settlement

experiences that help newcomers feel at home and better able

to overcome the challenges of integrating. A true champion,

Baergen has assisted refugees and immigrants from Vietnam,

Chile, the former Yugoslavia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Syria,

and other areas.

David Embury Sports

David Embury is a community builder who

has provided decades of contribution to

Edmonton’s cycling community. He is the

cofounder of the Edmonton Juventus Cycling

Club, which teaches cycling and has produced

national, world, international, and Olympic

champions. Embury established the Argyll

Velodrome Association to lead redevelopment

after a six-year facility closure. Since it reopened, thousands of

students have visited and hundreds of youth, elite, and masters

have trained and raced here. Embury led the project to expand and

modernize the Argyll Velodrome Clubhouse and was instrumental

in bringing the 2005 World Masters Games to Edmonton. He now

leads a project to establish a state-of-the-art indoor velodrome

as part of the Coronation Recreation Centre.
