INTRODUCTION

Social sciences as defined in the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences by Edwin R.

A. Seligman are “those mental or cultural sciences which deal with the activities of the individual as a member of a group.” The major disciplines under social sciences include anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, political science, psychiatry, psychology, sociology and statistics. Seligman also made mentions of semi-social sciences like ethics, education, philosophy and psychology and sciences with social implications like biology, geography, medicine, linguistics and art. These disciplines do not only reflect a sustained dedication to critical, interdisciplinary approaches to the study of social relations, social structures, social identities and social phenomena but are also concerned with the society and the relationships of individuals within the society. These various disciplines are therefore essential in understanding diverse social issues and concerns that affect not only the youths but the country and the whole humanity as well.

Founded on the disciplines, principles and values of social sciences, the Borres Youth Leadership Institute or BYLI organized the International Social Science Camp (ISSC). It provides avenues and opportunities for young people to develop their basic understanding of the various disciplines of social sciences that will equip them with the knowledge and skills in becoming a socially aware, responsible and active students and citizens and set a ground for leadership development and for creating a community of young and responsible global leaders of tomorrow.

At the camp, delegates will have the opportunity to understand and appreciate the different disciplines of social sciences. Understanding these disciplines will truly support the declared policy of the state under Republic Act No. 10533 otherwise known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” to produce “graduates of basic education who are empowered individuals who have learned, x x x x the foundations for learning throughout life, the competence to engage in work and be productive, the ability to coexist in fruitful harmony with local and global communities, the capability to engage in autonomous, creative, and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others and one’s self.”

Further, ISSC will strengthen the goal of ASEAN Community Integration of

building ONE ASEAN Identity. It will create a sense of belongingness, consolidate unity in diversity and enhance deeper mutual understanding among the delegates about their culture, history, religion, and civilization. It will also promote cultural exchange and understanding among the delegates about the unique history of different people and the cultural similarities and differences. The prominent role in youth development of the World Program of Action for Youth of the United Nations will be supported as well as the camp offers opportunities to young people to effectively participate in society through discussions on national and global issues and understanding cultural diversity.

"We need the social sciences in order to address

the challenges of global change. Social scientists

bring a wealth of knowledge about processes of

social transformation that will be critical to

dealing with issues of environmental change and

sustainability". - Alberto Martinelli, President, International Social Science Council

THEME:

“Transforming the World, Achieving Sustainable Development Agenda 2030” RATIONALE OF THE THEME:

To end poverty is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable element for sustainable development. On 25 September 2015 at the United Nations General Assembly, 193 member-states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are:

Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere; Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages;

Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; Goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; Goal 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; Goal 10. Reduce inequality within and among countries; Goal 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Goal 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; Goal 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; Goal 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels; and Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

BYLI believes that these goals can be best achieved through the youths as front liners in the campaign. They are the major catalyst for change. Further, today’s youth and the next generation will be the beneficiaries of these goals. It is therefore necessary that the youths will be actively involved in transforming the world in various areas so that the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 will be achieved.
