A MESSAGE FROM SHELTERING ARMS PRESIDENT & CEODear Friends,

Thanks to you, Sheltering Arms reached several exciting milestones in 2016. Chief among them was the completion of a campaign to build our 16th center in the heart of Atlanta’s Peoplestown community. Located on the campus of D.H. Stanton Elementary School, our new center will open its doors to nearly

200 children at the start of the 2017-18 school year. Sheltering Arms will work closely with the elementary school to provide shared professional development and transition opportunities; thus, establishing a true “learning campus” that will support the vision that all Georgia students will enter kindergarten prepared to read at grade level. In addition to providing quality early learning, we will deliver holistic family support services ranging from mental and emotional health, financial literacy and post- secondary education.

We will also unveil refreshed branding in conjunction with the opening of the new center at all of our metro Atlanta sites. We look forward to leveraging our new look to raise awareness of the power and the promise of quality early childhood education.

As always, Sheltering Arms remains focused on educating children and empowering families to build stronger communities. Community support enabled us to provide more than 3,400 children with high-quality early education and deliver comprehensive family support services. Our children scored in the 90th percentile, exceeding developmental milestones for language and literacy; and 92% of our families told us that we were instrumental in connecting them with useful community resources.

Finally, we continue to connect hundreds of our Sheltering Arms teachers and other local and regional early learning professionals to targeted training and professional development through our Georgia Training Institute. Plans are underway to expand this program to offer a more robust portfolio of trainings and certifications in early childhood education.

It is an exciting time to be in the field of early learning, and it is exciting to be at Sheltering Arms, working with dedicated individuals and organizations that are investing in the promise and possibilities of early childhood education. You truly make the difference. Thank you for your commitment.

Sincerely,

Blythe Keeler Robinson President & CEO

FAMILY SUCCESS STORY

MY CHILD HAS ATTENDED SHELTERING ARMS SINCE SHE WAS A BABY AND NOW SHE WILL BE

TRANSITIONING TO KINDERGARTEN. SHE WILL BE ABOVE GRADE LEVEL BECAUSE OF THE SKILL SETS SHE’S

OBTAINED AND THE PROGRESS SHE’S MADE HERE.

—SHELTERING ARMS PARENT

“My mom was a single parent, struggling to support two kids,” says Dr. Erika Sibbie, “yet she made sure I had the strongest start possible.” At Sheltering Arms, Dr. Sibbie’s mom found more than affordable childcare, she found a trustworthy partner and support system. Sheltering Arms helped open doors for Dr. Sibbie to everything from the high school honor roll to the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry.

Today, she is the first doctor in her family and provides dental care to disadvantaged families in LaGrange, Georgia.

2016 HIGHLIGHTSCompletion of D.H. Stanton Capital Campaign

Sheltering Arms successfully completed its $8.4 million capital campaign to construct a new state-of-the-art early learning and family support center on the campus of D.H. Stanton Elementary School. The new 27,000 square-foot environmentally-friendly building is expected to open in the fall, giving Sheltering Arms access to serve approximately 200 more children and their families.

Two-Generation Family Support Program

Sheltering Arms restructured its family support model to align with a two-generation approach to working with families. This new structure now offers fully comprehensive support to both the child and their parents by providing them with a team of coaches, who are individually specialized in the areas of: family engagement, health and wellness, economic supports, post-secondary education and employment pathway navigation, and high-quality early childhood education. The program more intentionally integrates parents in their child’s early learning experience and helps create a legacy of economic stability for the entire family, from one generation to the next.

Announcement of the Sheltering Arms Legacy Society

Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Sheltering Arms’ success, providing the means by which Sheltering Arms can carry out its mission to transform the lives of children, their families and communities through model early childhood education and leadership. In recognition of this important commitment, the Legacy Society honors individuals who have made a gift to Sheltering Arms for five consecutive years or more. Gifts of any amount to all areas of the organization are counted towards Legacy Society membership.

SPECIAL EVENTSOperation Storybook

Sheltering Arms had another successful year host-ing Operation Storybook, our annual week-long read-a-thon, where all 15 centers celebrate literacy through a week of fun, creativity and community engagement. The curriculum was based on three books that centered on creativity, art, colors and animals. Each day, the centers focused on a different theme with corresponding activities and volunteers. More than 300 parents, community partners and volunteers had a great time sharing a love for books.

Celebration Dinner

Our 2016 Sheltering Arms Celebration Dinner took place at Porsche Cars North America. The evening featured test drives with professional drivers, racecar simulators, an open bar, gourmet dining and a live and silent auction. We were honored to recognize the Mayor’s wife, Sarah-Elizabeth Reed, with our inaugural Early Childhood Education Champion Award. Nearly $200,000 was raised for need-based scholarships, literacy materials and teacher training.

Community Cares

Each December, a corporate partner helps make the holiday season extra special for Sheltering Arms children. This year, more than 900 Carter’s employees hand-wrapped a book with a pair of Carter’s pajamas to give to every child at Sheltering Arms (nearly 2,400 students). The gifts were delivered to the centers as a surprise. It has become a holiday tradition that the parents, staff and kids look forward to every year.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Strength-Based Family Workers (SFW) Credential

The Strength-based Family Workers credential provides the skills and competencies that direct service workers need to empower and support families. Workers who complete the program are better able to facilitate a family’s ability to set and reach their own goals. While nationally standardized, the training is tailored to meet the needs of local communities.

The Sheltering Arms Georgia Training Institute (GTI) is the state coordinator for the SFW program, promoting Georgia professionals to utilize competencies that empower families as they strive for a healthy self-reliance and interdependence within their com-munities. GTI has awarded 770 Strength-Based Family Workers/FDC credentials in the state of Georgia, to date.

• 2 Strength-Based Family Workers Instructor Trainings (each series consists of 14 sessions)

• 21 Participants

• 20 Strength-Based Family Workers Credentials Awarded

• 1 Strength-Based Learning Coach Training

The Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential The Child Development Associate credential is also a national credentialing program, and is awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, DC. GTI provides a training series that is aligned with the CDA Competency Standards that are used to evaluate a caregiver’s performance with children and families during the CDA assessment process.

GEORGIA TRAINING INSTITUTE (GTI)The Georgia Training Institute is now a Pearson VUE testing site. Pearson VUE is the leader in computer-based testing. Each year more than 14 million people around the world take an exam with Pearson VUE. The CDA Council began offering their exam electronically to give their candidates quicker results. GTI decided to become a Pearson VUE testing site to give our CDA students the opportunity to take the exam where they received their training.

GTI builds our state’s capacity to create positive outcomes for children and families through quality professional development for early care and education and family support providers. Organizations that utilized GTI’s training in 2016 include:
