The Hon Kate Jones MPMinister for Tourism and Major Events

In 2016 Townsville will celebrate its 150th birthday, and to recognise this milestone there is a bumper calendar of events planned for residents and visitors to our city.

The T150 program will feature some key events not to be missed. One of the biggest will be the T150 Defence Force Air Show and the Townsville Bulletin Sky Show on October 15. There is also the T150 Variety Concert headlined by David Campbell and featuring a range of local talent on April 2. Add to this the return of the T150 4TOFM Pacific Festival along The Strand and the black tie T150 Port of Townsville Gala Dinner Under The Stars on September 10 and you have some highlights that will truly celebrate our great city and its past, present and future.

Of course we also have a number of events held annually including the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Townsville Running Festival,

SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week, and the Castrol EDGE Townsville

400. We will also all cheer on our North Queensland Toyota Cowboys as they defend their title as premiers.

Towards the end of 2016 we will have the privilege of hosting the Da Vinci Machines, a major international touring exhibition coming to Pinnacles Gallery in November. More than 500 years ago, Leonardo da Vinci conceived possibilities far beyond the understanding of others with his ideas about nature, anatomy, mechanics and flight, recorded in his manuscripts. This exhibition features more than 75 exhibits reconstructed from illustrations and writings by the mastermind.

Art lovers will also be looking forward to The Percivals, Townsville’s biennial celebration of portraiture at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Pinnacles Gallery, which showcases the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by Australian artists. With $50,000 prize money on offer across the two, the Percival Portrait Painting Prize and DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize will no doubt be hotly contested. Applications close on March 18.

2016 is shaping up to be an exciting, fun-filled year on the social calendar with a program of events to please art-lovers, sports fans, fine food connoisseurs and thrill-seekers alike.

I look forward to celebrating our city’s milestone with all of you.

SUPERCAR EXCITEMENT The V8 Supercars are back in 2016, bigger and better than ever!WHAT: Castrol EDGE Townsville 400WHEN: 8–10 July 2016WHERE: Reid Park, Townsville

It’s fast and furious; V8 Supercar action is a proven crowd pleaser and it’s on again. After the massive success of the 2015 event, Australia’s largest regional sporting event — the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400 — will bring its massive travelling road show to the people of Northern Queensland in July.

On top of the amazing V8 Supercars Championship, the on-track action will heat up with the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series, Australian

GT Championship and V8 Utes firing around the streets of Reid Park.

Making the racing even more exciting is the switch to soft tyres for V8 Supercars — adding an element of strategy that we’ve never seen as teams work out how to get to the chequered flag first.

Following an incredible ‘silly season’, the people of Townsville will get their first look at champion Mark Winterbottom in green, following his sponsor switch to Team Bottle O Racing, and legend Craig Lowndes in his Caltex Commodore. Also making moves are Shane van Gisbergen

to Red Bull Racing Australia, Will Davison to Tekno, David Reynolds into an Erebus Motorsport Mercedes, Fabian Coulthard piloting a DJR Team Penske Falcon and James Moffat into a Garry Rogers Motorsport Volvo.

With Frosty dominating in 2015, will we see Prodrive continue their run at Reid Park? With competition tougher than ever, they’ll have their work cut out for them!

V8 SUPERCARS DRIVER MEET AND GREET Super event to kick off V8 partyWHAT: V8 Supercars Driver Meet and GreetWHEN: 7 July 2016WHERE: Flinders Street, Townsville CBD

Before the engines start rumbling, before the big acts complete their mic checks, and before Townsville turns into an action-packed, fast-paced course for the V8 Supercars, the aspiring motor-heads of the region will get their chance to get up close and personal with the masterminds behind the machines.

Previously held at Jezzine Barracks, the newly relocated V8 Supercars Driver Meet and Greet will begin with a convoy of all your favourite drivers,

arriving in style in Townsville’s iconic Flinders Street!

The Driver Meet and Greet is the place to kick off the V8 Supercars party with V8 drivers descending on the Townsville CBD.

Cr Tony Parsons was keen to encourage Townsville locals and visitors to converge in the Townsville CBD and join in on all the pre-V8 festivities.

“Kicking off all the action of the V8 Supercars is the return of the popular, free, family V8 Supercars Drivers Meet and Greet event on Thursday night.“The main attraction this year will be the drivers

of the V8 machines. This is your opportunity to meet your favourite drivers and teams, get their autographs and snap a few photos with them.“It is going to be a great event to kick off the official celebrations for this year’s Castrol Edge Townsville 400 and I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the atmosphere – you will be sure to run into a few sporting heroes while you’re there.”

The V8 Supercars Driver Meet and Greet is the council’s signature event to officially launch the Townsville 400 and has become a firm favourite among children, families and V8 fans alike.

SOUNDS LIKE PARADISE Annual world class chamber music festival of concerts draws international crowds and musiciansWHAT: Australian Festival of Chamber Music WHEN: 29 July–6 August 2016 WHERE: Various locations, Townsville

Exquisite music, incredible artists and a genuinely friendly atmosphere - that’s what you’ll find at the annual Australian Festival of Chamber Music held in venues across Townsville.

Held over nine days during winter, the festival is a wonderfully unique offering of first class musicians from around the world, innovative programming of concerts and a happy mix of locals, visitors and artists enjoying each other’s company.

This year’s festival will showcase a strong line-up of Australian artists, including the country’s finest string quartet and festival quartet in residence, the Goldner String Quartet.

Festival executive director Justin Ankus said up to one-third of the visiting artists would be international musicians.

“It’s the unique programming that attracts the growing audiences,” he said.

Artistic Director Piers Lane combines different musicians to perform together on various pieces. Often they’ve never played together before (and

may not again) which helps to create a sense of excitement and spontaneity the audience loves. With more than 25 concerts and special events spread over the nine days, there really is something for everyone.

The festival also delivers a valuable education program through its Winterschool for young musicians culminating in a concert at the end of their training, which is free to the public and allows the students to demonstrate to friends, family and the community how hard they’ve worked.

TOWNSVILLE: THE OLD AND THE NEWS Major exhibition traces the history of Townsville through the eyes of the mediaWHAT: Townsville turns 150: the old and the news WHEN: 15 February 2016–29 January 2017 WHERE: Museum of Tropical Queensland, Townsville

A major exhibition celebrating Townsville’s 150th anniversary will open at the Museum of Tropical Queensland on the exact day the municipality was declared, on 15 February.

Townsville turns 150: the old and the news will reveal the events and personalities that influenced the development of the ‘Queen City of the North’ over the past 150 years and the way the media, from newsprint to digital, have captured and reflected these times.

Museum of Tropical Queensland exhibition developer Vivienne Moran said the exhibition would include a timeline of major events from 1866 to 2016, historic photographs and media reports.

“We’ve also collected hundreds of objects from Townsville locals and a selection of these will be on display,” she said.

“There are so many stories to tell that we’ll be swapping out sections of the exhibition every few months, giving us the opportunity to profile more personalities and events.”

Townsville turns 150: the old and news is open until 29 January 2017.

The exhibition is a partnership with the Townsville Bulletin and James Cook University.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is open every day from 9:30am to 5:00pm except Good Friday, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

CELEBRATING PORTRAITURE The Percivals include two major portrait competitions and exhibitions of the finalists

PLAYING WITH LIGHT Two years on, a photographic celebration of portraiture gathers pace

WHAT: Percival Portrait Painting PrizeWHEN: 6 May–10 July 2016WHERE: Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville

The biennial Percival Portrait Painting Prize is the region's own portrait competition and is held at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.

While showcasing the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by Australian artists, the competition has given emerging artists an opportunity to engage with portraiture and share their expressions.

Across the years, participating artists have presented varied styles and approaches to the contemporary portrait – from abstracted images and cool conceptualism to smooth realism and the energetic aura of thick, impasto oils executed with broad brush and palette knife.

Thanks to the generosity of Glencore and other sponsors over the years, the competition has steadily grown in stature and prize monies, from $3,000 in 2007 to the current major acquisitive prize of $40,000.

BURDEKIN CROWD PLEASER Going a country mile for the race day fashion stakes

A LITTLE BIT OF ITALY TYTO Wetlands goes Italian for a weekend of family funThe Australian Italian Festival is a much loved and authentic Italian cultural event held on the first weekend of August in Ingham, Townsville North Queensland.

The two-day carnival began in 1995 as a way to celebrate the economic and cultural diversity of the Hinchinbrook region and community.

The Australian Italian Festival features cooking demonstrations, endless food stalls, Italian art and history, free amusement rides and games for all ages. Spend time with family and friends as you enjoy the atmosphere, food, and excitement of the best of Italian culture. Among the favourites

are greasy pole climbing, pizza and pasta eating competitions, grape stomping and gondola races.

The Australian Italian Festival is held in the beautiful TYTO Wetlands, featuring lagoons and raised walkways that come alive with Australian flora and fauna. Come and enjoy an experience like no other in Australia.

It’s the race day that sees Burdekin locals go a country mile when it comes to the fashion stakes.

The Burdekin Growers Race Day, one of the Burdekin’s most anticipated social events of the year (drawing a record crowd of 4,100 in 2015), left organisers hard pressed to fault anyone for dress code or demeanour on the day.

Volunteer promoter Nicky Achurra said the event saw everyone in the small township get involved. “It’s a big deal for our small town, everyone gets right into it because it’s the one big day our community can go all out. The women get

their hair and makeup done and they get their husbands and boyfriends fitted out,” she said.“It is difficult to find anyone not dressed up and everyone is on their best behaviour.”

Ms Achurra said with $50,000 in prizes up for grabs, Fashions on the Field entrants came from all across Queensland.

THRILLS AND SPILLS The toughest sport on dirt

GOING BATTY IN THE TOWERS Gentlemen's sport attracts thousands to Charters Towers yearlyIndulge yourself in a weekend of cricket unlike any other. Every year, Charters Towers prepares to give itself over to a horde of cricket mad sportsmen, and all are welcome.

The Goldfield Ashes in Charters Towers is the largest amateur cricket carnival in the Southern Hemisphere, conducted by the Charters Towers Cricket Association Incorporated (CTCA).

Recently labelled a Queensland Iconic Event, matches are played on 58 different playing fields, including some that are privately owned.

The event attracts about 3,000 players and their

support crew who converge on Charters Towers for a few days indulging in the sport of gentlemen.

The objective of the carnival is to bring fellow cricketers togther from near and far to participate with good sportsmanship and friendly rivalry in the King of Games.

While ‘The Ashes’ has grown to levels well beyond the imagination of its president Jack Mann’s original concept, it has not lost its reputation for friendliness and hospitality. Perhaps within that reputation lies the secret of its past success and assures its growth into the future.

Experience a once-in-a-lifetime event as the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) prepare to deliver two huge nights of the toughest sport on dirt at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

It’s a showdown like no other - elite cowboys versus the toughest bulls on the planet in a three hour action packed sporting entertainment event that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Cowboys, all eager for glory, strive to overcome the power of the 52 most extreme bucking bulls in a battle of power, agility and the fight of the fittest eight seconds at a time.

The whole event is choreographed with pyrotechnics, lasers, concert sound system and mega screen replays. Multiple camera angles will take you behind the scenes and inside the bucking chutes as riders prepare for the ride of their lives while delivering the ultimate live event bull riding experience.

Far from the dress circle appeal of our arts culture, PBR has its own loyal following of salt of the earth people from all around Australia and the world, drawing huge crowds to each thrilling event.

DESTINATION ENDURANCE Where the spirit of adventure meets endurance sport

RUN, SWIM AND RIDE Two days of run, swim and ride set to rival anyWith a bigger and better program, the Intersport Townsville Triathlon Festival is a weekend of events for all ages, fitness levels and groups.

With a brand new format, two days of racing and the ability to take part in a number of events across the weekend, this is an event you’ll want to take part in. The action on the sideline will be one to watch too.

In conjunction with the Triathlon, the Live2TRI expo will be open all weekend featuring offers from gyms, lifestyle organisations and health food stores, as well as ways to keep energy up with food stalls and coffee carts.

A dinner under the stars at Strand Park (Carb with the Stars) will be held on the Friday night before the race, featuring ambassadors and inspiring guest speakers.

Event organiser Sam Pascoe said Carb with the Stars was open to the whole community, not just athletes, and would be an introduction to the event before the festival officially opens at 9:00am Saturday.

Offering a unique excuse to get out, get fit and see Australia, destination endurance competitions are quickly growing in popularity. Among the favourites is Adventurethon – a five-race, off-road competition played out in six unique locations across the country, including Magnetic Island and Townsville.

Each adrenaline-charged Adventurethon race is conducted through national parklands, beaches and hiking trails to enjoy spectacular scenery and experience the outdoors. The multi-sport challenge incorporates paddling, mountain biking and off-road (or trail) running.

It’s all about setting yourself a big challenge.

Adventurethon offers five events over a weekend, challenging all levels of fitness and skill; catering equally for the first time adventurer to the hard-core seasoned athlete.

Magnetic Island will hold its Adventurethon on 19–20 March 2016 and the Townsville Adventurethon will be held on 2–3 July 2016. This is a great opportunity to grab your mountain bike, kayak and running shoes and get straight to the beachside suburb of Pallarenda where the scenery is spectacular.

GREEK EXPECTATIONS A grape-stomping and plate-smashing celebration in the park

GET YOUR CULTURE FIX Food, art, music and culture are all here The Townsville Cultural Fest showcases the diversity of Australian music, food, arts and culture, bringing people together in celebration of life itself.

The event is a not-for-profit festival organised by the Townsville Intercultural Centre.

In mid-August each year more than 100 performing groups will entertain tens of thousands of visitors, offering everything from folk, rock and pop, to Indigenous Australian music, African drum circles, as well as Latin, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern dance groups.

The Cultural Fest includes more than 100 food and market stalls from around the world, offering arts and crafts, workshops and presentations, fashion, food and produce.

This year there will be a music stage, a dance stage, a chai tent stage for intimate sets, and a zen space for chilling out.

Around the grounds you will find everything from roving performers and interactive art installations, to show rides and henna tattoo stalls.

Townsville’s annual Glencore Greek Fest is a multi-award winning family event that’s free to attend and tons of fun.

Event organiser Bill Malandris said in 2016 there would be more Greek music, more cultural dancing and more delicious Greek food than ever before! Held in the idyllic setting of Riverway, under the raintrees, it’s a great time and place to relax and enjoy the entertainment.

Keen favourites with the crowds are music and dance, the children's program, cooking demos, plate-smashing and grape-stomping competitions, rides, and fireworks.

There will be plenty of food and drinks, including a licensed bar. Kids entertainment will include rides and sideshows – roller coaster, ferris wheel and dodgem cars to name a few. The park will be filled with the unique sounds of both traditional and modern Greek music throughout the weekend.

The Glencore Greek Fest has won a string of awards over the years including Community Event of the Year six times since 1999.

CHARTERS TOWERS Discover Hidden TreasuresThe Charters Towers region is a caravan and camping paradise, steeped in natural beauty and a sense of history. With 11 caravan parks ranging from award-winning facilities with resort-style swimming pools and all the creature comforts to classic Aussie bush camps right beside the mighty Burdekin River, there is choice aplenty.

Connecting with history, Towers Hill was a significant allied military base in World War II with some 30 concrete bunkers dotted throughout the surrounding hills still visible.

Step inside the bunkers and live the story of wartime years through interactive digital displays.

The City Hall World War II photographic display and the collection of military memorabilia at the Zara Clark Museum are must-sees.

Enroute to the Burdekin Weir, stop at the Bore Sight Range and see where bomber aircraft test fired their guns for accuracy training. The ANZAC Centenary Digital Heritage Trail and the Boer War Memorial in Lissner Park are also significant sites in Australia’s military history.

Charters Towers offers a stunning variety of natural attributes and a rich historical significance, making the region a definite “must-see” on your itinerary.

• Ravenswood – Discover an old gold mining settlement, set among the rolling hills of the outback.

• Texas Longhorn Wagon Tour – Take a traditional horse drawn wagon ride back in time to the ‘Old West’ and see the legendary Texas Longhorns.

BURDEKIN Light up your travelsJust one hour’s drive south of Townsville is the Burdekin Shire – the sugar capital of Australia, fishing mecca, bird watching paradise.

The district is made up of the neighbouring towns of Ayr and Home Hill and includes over a dozen other smaller centres. It is as famous for its rich, flat farmlands as it is for its amazing waterways and scenic beauty.

The SS Yongala shipwreck lies just off the coast of Ayr and is ranked one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. This is a must-do for experienced divers and is easily accessible with tours departing from Ayr, Townsville and Magnetic Island.

The Burdekin region is the biggest and sweetest sugar cane producer in the country and is one of the few cane growing regions left in Australia where cane is burned before harvesting. These magnificent cane fires frequently light up the evening skies between June and December.

The Burdekin River Bridge, linking Ayr and Home Hill, is the district’s best known landmark. Known as the Silver Link, the 1,103m crossing is the only bridge in Australia without a solid footing and is longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

• Birdwatching – Visit Plantation Park or Horseshoe Lagoon to see magnificent wetlands teeming with birdlife.

• Go barefoot – Nearby Alva Beach offers miles of unspoilt, sandy coastline and is a popular spot for beach fishing, birdwatching and windsurfing.

• Dive – Take an underwater tour to the world famous wreck dive, the ‘SS Yongala’.

HINCHINBROOK Nature’s paradiseThe Hinchinbrook region encompasses amazingly beautiful beaches, waterfalls and national parkland.

At 228 metres, Wallaman Falls is Australia’s highest permanent single-drop waterfall, located in Girringun National Park. Experience the beauty of World Heritage-listed rainforest and spectacular gorge views on one of the short walking tracks near the falls.

TYTO Wetlands is an award-winning destination, just perfect to while away an hour or a day of artistic, cultural or ecological excellence. The extensive centre, covering 120 hectares, features

a regional art gallery, conference and event venue, beautiful nature reserve and a cafe.

Fishing is a favourite pastime here. Throw in a line and discover why the Hinchinbrook Channel is a hot spot for fishing enthusiasts and a relaxing day on the water.

Lucinda is Shangri-La for keen anglers. Mangrove jack, coral trout, juicy mudcrabs and barramundi are all in plentiful supply. Hire a boat and head out to sea or try your luck in the estuary mangroves off the beach, or over the side of the jetty.

• Pack a picnic – Trawl the local delis, cafés and roadside fruit and veg markets, packed with local produce and traditional Italian fare.

• Taylors Beach – This quiet beachside community offers beaches, fishing and is the gateway to nearby Orpheus Island and fringing reefs.

• Thorsborne Trail – Hinchinbrook Island offers nature-lovers the best beaches, waterfalls, rainforests and savannah treks.
