Popé’s RebellionThe “Pueblo Revolt of 1680,” often referred to as “Popé’s Rebellion,” was a revolt of the Pueblo people against the Spaniards who were colonizing the region now known as New Mexico. Since their arrival in 1540, the Spanish had tried to convert the
Indians to Roman Catholicism and forced them to work for them. Popé, a religious leader from Taos Pueblo, secretly organized a widespread rebellion, and on the night of August 10, 1680, successfully drove the Spaniards out of the area.

10 Sunset on the SandiasThe Sandia Mountains are Albuquerque’s most prominent natural landmark. One of the most enjoyable features of the Sandias is the glowing watermelon colors they display during sunset (the word “sandia” is Spanish for “watermelon”). The Sandia Peak
Tramway takes visitors to Sandia Peak, the 10,000-foot crest of the Sandias. The “Turquoise Trail” on the east side of the mountains is a scenic highway with fascinating historic stops from Albuquerque to Santa Fe.

Battle of Little BighornIn the late 19th century, conflict broke out between the US army and plains Indian tribes as a result of the colonization of
Native American lands and the forced relocation of Native American people. The Battle of Little Bighorn took place on June 25th, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River, pitting General George Custer against Chiefs Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Gall.
The battle ended in defeat for the 7th Cavalry and would come to be known as “Custer’s Last Stand.”

Land of the Shining MountainsVisitors to Montana inevitably fall in love with its majestic mountains. The western third of the state is home to
over 100 mountain ranges, and the state’s name is derived from the Spanish word for mountain, “montaña.” “Land of the Shining Mountains” depicts the splendor of these natural wonders.
