Praised for brilliant technique, tonal beauty and superb mu-sicianship, Canadian pianist Angela Cheng made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Edmonton Symphony and her Salzburg Festival debut in a recital with Pinchas Zukerman, both in 2012. She has toured Europe, Asia, South America and the United States as a member of the Zuker-man Chamber Players. A record-ing artist and touring soloist, she won the gold medal at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition, and was the first Canadian to win the Montreal International Piano Competition. Violinist Henning Vater, founder and concertmaster of the Göttingen Baroque Orchestra, will make his OCU debut with Dallas-based harpsichordist Brad Bennight in an evening recital of timeless classics on ancient instruments. The German-based Vater, a recording artist and founding member of the Handel Festival Orchestra of Göttingen, will join forces with Bennight, who has played at festivals from Boston to Berkeley, as well as at Mexico's inaugural Festival de Musica Barocca in San Miguel d’Allende; at the International Festival of Early Music in the colonial cities of Bolivia, and Cusco, Peru; and on concert tours of Germany and Austria. A saxophonist and 20-year veteran of the Grammy-winning Yellowjackets, Bob Mintzer leads his own big band and quartet, and has played in the bands of Tito Puente, Buddy Rich and Thad Jones-Mel Lewis. He holds USC's Buzz McCoy Endowed Chair of Jazz Studies, and has authored more than a dozen books on jazz studies and composed more than 200 charts for orchestra, concert band and big band. Acclaimed as “a spectacular soloist… a most impressive master of his instrument” (Montreal Gazette) and for his “pure technical prowess” (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle) and “unusual lyrical gifts” (Gramophone), Paul Merkelo is in his third decade as principal trumpet with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. He was Canada’s musical ambassador to China for the inauguration of the Montreal Park in Shanghai, and performed as soloist with the Shanghai Broadcast Orchestra in a national telecast. He made his New York debut at Lincoln Center with the New World Symphony Orchestra, under Michael Tilson Thomas, and has worked with conductors Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti and Valery Gergiev. The international a cappella quintet of Olga is comprised of Dutch, Icelandic, and Russian singers who approach traditional songs with enthusiasm, humor, drama, and vocal clarity. With repertoire covering more than five centuries, Olga’s programs include music ranging from medieval Icelandic drinking songs to nostalgic popular hits. The group was founded in 2012 at the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands, under the guidance of Icelandic tenor Jón Þorsteinsson, and has embarked on a career of recording and touring. The debut recording of Russian-born pianist Tatiana Goncharova and violinist Grigory Kalinovsky, featuring Dmitry Shostakovich’s Violin Sonata and 24 Preludes and released by Centaur, was hailed by the International Record Review for its “emotional intensity” and “over-whelming mastery.” Kalinovsky has been lauded as a “superior poet” (Vancouver Sun) and praised for his “heart and indomitable will” (Gramophone), while Goncharova is praised as “a musician on the threshold of a brilliant career” (Washington Post) and “a sensational pianist” (Providence Journal), who has won the Olga Koussevitzky Piano Competition, the Bergen Philharmonic Concerto Competition, the Moscow Conservatory Concerto Competition and the Byelorussian National Competition.
