COWTOWN CELEBRATION

Other well-attended family friendly events were the Western artists and musicians, Cowboy Tradeshow, El-Kan Rodeo, Reenactments of Shooting of Sheriff Whitney, and the Western Heritage parade. This longstanding celebrations was credited to the vast number of area organizations, volunteers, and local collaboration.

The Smoky Hill Community Foundation awarded a grant, courtesy of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, that was used to fund the promotion and advertising of the county event. Radio ads and interviews, TV commercials, digital videos, and newspaper ads were a significant tool to draw the mass of visitors and cowboy culture to Ellsworth.

The Cowtown Celebration Committee’s goals were to significantly grow the number of community involvement, outside visitors, and tourism from across Kansas and the Midwest. Several ways this was evident was the increase of Pageant ticket sales, show and event participation, performance numbers, general uptick in traffic, and the National Drover’s Hall of Fame Museum visitors, just to name a few.

The attendees experienced the Cowtown history as Ellsworth is the first spur of the famous Chisholm Trail. With the incredible events scheduled and a supportive community and advertising budget, the Western enthusiasts encountered a successful Ellsworth County 150th Cowtown Celebration.

In the high heat of mid-August, Ellsworth held their 150th Cowtown Celebration. “The Wickedest Cowtown in Kansas” commemorated the year with special events, led by the first longhorn cattle driven parade through downtown Ellsworth.

Information provided by Lindsey Huseman “On the final night of the 2017 Ellsworth County Fair, during the auction, I stood behind the arena, just taking in the final moments of the fair. I was directly underneath the newly installed large fan, enjoying the cool air that was flowing through the barn. It really makes a big difference!” said Lindsey Huseman.

The Ellsworth County Fair Association received a grant to improve the atmosphere at the fair. With the grant, the association was able to purchase a large industrial fan and install the fan prior to the 2017 county fair. The fan provided much needed air movement for exhibitors, spectators and animals. The association and attendees are very happy with the quality of the fan and the volume of air moved. The fan is very quiet so it does not interfere with the PA system or scare the animals. The fair had record attendance at all events in 2017.

“A special tradition of our fair is for the 4-H clubs to auction off a cookie jar. All members of the club and even some younger siblings and friends, parade around the arena carrying their goodies. The kids are all smiles. It’s a night of celebration for the hard work, lessons learned and the successes of the fair. The community comes together to celebrate agriculture and youth. The Fair Association Board of Directors work year-round for this event and I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to end it than by watching those kids celebrate, cheer each other on, and dream about next year while feeling the movement of the air,” said Huseman.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIRI have had the honor and privilege to serve as Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation Chairman for 2016-2017. I have had the opportunity to work with generous donors, inspiring civic leaders and outstanding board members. Sara Soukup, the prior chairman, provided a great example of leadership and fortitude.

In 2016 Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation was given the opportunity to choose one month to raise $50,000 which would be matched dollar for dollar by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. As a board we did not know what to expect as we had not undertaken a fundraising campaign of this nature. The board chose October 2016 for the fundraising month and went to work. We were elated on October 31st when a donor put us over the $50,000 goal.

This spring it was announced that the Dane G. Hansen Foundation would again offer the $50,000 one month match. The board is coordinating efforts for a November 2017 fundraising campaign. Also announced by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation is that they will continue their support of Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation by providing us $50,000 in both the spring and fall for the next four years. That is a total of $400,000 they have committed on top of the $200,000 previously given. In addition to the grant monies, we will be working with a Dane G. Hansen Foundation consultant to implement strategic doing in our local communities. Strategic doing is a process of bringing community minded individuals together to help move the community forward.

The future is promising for Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation and we hope you will join us in writing the story.
