RYE POST - REINVENTEDAfter gaining a reputation for quality sandwiches at their small store not far from Wolfhound, Rye Post took their success and expanded into a much larger location. Now right under Dillinger’s Pub, they have expanded their kitchen, their menu and most of all their draft beer list, which is now extensive.

MIYA’S GOT THE BALLSYou may know of a little Italian-influenced restaurant in an Itaewon back alley called Mama Miya. Miya is an American-trained Korean-American chef who ranked in the top 10 for the first season of Master Chef Korea. She’s now putting her talents to work bringing meatballs to the masses. In her ideal new location atop the hill across from Suji’s Restaurant & Deli, she will be serving meatball sandwiches with a variety of sauces.

THIS WHOLE BUILDINGJust down the street past Braai Republic they opened an entire building of businesses at the end of the year. Previously a residence, the basement is now occupied by a Japanese Restaurant called Ahoya. They weren’t open when we walked by so we don’t know much about them. The first floor is a coffee and dessert bar called LovelyChonChon (which they bizarrely have decided is pronounced 러블리 숑숑). It’s a very homey little dessert and coffee bar with a friendly staff, some of whom speak English. Worth a look. Finally on the 2nd floor is a bar/coffee shop called 61st. It’s also a cozy little place with a couple of rooms that make it perfect for small groups to relax and enjoy each others’ company.

MEET THE CHEF

For the better part of a decade, Savino Sguera has been manning the kitchens of Italy and France serving up beautiful Italian dishes. From homestyle lasagna to fresh lobster entrees, the food at Il Gattino isn’t necessarily the standard fare. But Savino, along with the other minds behind Il Gattino’s kitchen menu, aren’t looking to provide just ‘standard’ Italian cuisine; they’re offering a homestyle Italian hospitality.

Starting with the Istituto Alberghiero di Molfetta and then moving on to restaurants across Italy and eventually Paris, Savino has spent his entire adult career coming into his own as a chef. One of his most recent

accomplishments includes the publication of a cook book made up entirely of Italian cuisine recipes using ingredients readily available at most Korean supermarket chains.

The ingredients at Il Gattino, on the other hand, aren’t at all what you’d find at a local supermarket or at any supermarket in Korea. The pasta is all prepared in-house using Divella flour imported from Italy. Each day, the pasta is prepared fresh for the day’s customers to enjoy. Each recipe has Savino’s fingerprints all over it as he takes full control of the pastas and Italian dishes.

Chef Savino has only been in Korea for one year, taking in the sights and bringing his entire wealth of culinary skills from Italy. Recipes for lobster, tiramisu, and homestyle pastas aside, Chef Savino has a lot to offer and, along with the staff, he’s perfectly willing to help patrons navigate the deep and abundant waters of Italian hospitality. Whether it’s a piping hot plate of lasagna or, again, the lobster, Il Gattino is well worth a minute of your time and, more than likely, many future visits.

BEER OF THE MONTH

Espresso Vanilla Stout 5.5%-Galmegi Brewing Co. Aroma: The subtle vanilla notes add a nice contrast to the roasted grains and dutch coffee beans. Chocolate glazed donuts come to mind. On the nose they nailed exactly what they went for, a vanilla espresso.Appearance: Dark as night with a lasting, tan head that befriends the side of the glass.Flavor: The combination of bitterness derived from the first edition hops, roasted malt, and espresso attack your taste buds up front while the vanilla comes through on the follow through at the back of the tongue. The balance is tilted towards the bitter side as expected with an espresso stout. This beer had a beautiful, clean fermentation.Mouthfeel: A bit light on the body which for this ale increases it’s drinkability meaning it goes down very smoothly, the yeast worked over time. The carbonation is at an appropriate level to add to the taste while not taking away from it. There is also a subtle note of astringency which comes with the use of dark malts. Overall Impression: It's a very drinkable beer and great for any fans of coffee shops. I’d prefer having a pint of this ale as opposed to coffee with my morning newspaper.
