DIESEL FUEL FACTSTier 4 Diesel Engines

In an effort to reduce emissions and keep our air clean, John Deere engineers are challenged to convert one gallon of diesel into the most efficient emissions compliant fuel ever to run our modern Tier 4 diesel engines.

John Deere has developed a method for precise fuel control called High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel systems. HPCR systems operate at much higher fuel pressures than most other fuel systems, approaching pressures of 44,000 PSI. John Deere specifications around fuel quality and fuel conditions are vital to an engine’s performance, reliability, and durability.

Always purchase diesel fuel from a reputable source:

• John Deere requires fuel that meets ASTM D-975.

• Cetane (number of 45 minimum): This number determines ability to start.

• Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP): This should be 9° F below lowest expected temperature.

• Fuel Lubricity: Should pass a minimum scar diameter of 0.45mm as measured by ASTM D-6079 or ISO 12156.1

• Particulates: Should be less than or equal to 10 mg/L per ASTM D2276 test method.

• Do not pre-fill fuel filters due to contamination risk.

• Use only high quality fuel filters.

Storage of Diesel:

• Must meet local laws and regulations.• Fully functional caps and vents

equipped with desiccant breathers for moisture removal

• Keep tanks reasonably full to limit condensation and freezing.

• Allow 24 hours for new fuel to settle before using, if possible.

• Should have a well-serviced filter between pump and nozzle

• Tank should be low on opposite end of pump pick-up to allow water and sediment to accumulate for regular draining and servicing.

• If storage will be over 6 months with standard diesel, consult your fuel supplier for algae control and recommended additives. This is even more important with bio-fuel.

• Test tank on frequent basis for water and algae.
