Master Builders National Excellence Awards recognise the fi nest from the building and construction industry and 2015 is no exception with a showcase of the highest quality achieved by the industry’s best and brightest.

Winners of Australia’s most prestigious building industry and con-struction awards are recognised for projects that are testament to their commitment to excellence.

The National Excellence Awards are drawn from the winners of nine preceding state and territory awards making national winners the best of the best who set the benchmark for the industry nationwide.

Winning projects exemplify inspiration and adherence to the highest standards, bringing to life the vision of clients.

They have conquered challenging locations and conditions, achieved bold and rigorous sustainability and workplace safety targets, built homes for people of all abilities and families of all shapes and sizes and provided lifestyle and liveable housing to fulfi l the diverse housing needs of everyday Australians.

This year’s winning projects and their fellow national fi nalists prove that the technical expertise and innovation of Master Builders can

overcome the seemingly impossible.Grand visions were also achieved in our built environment with public and private buildings creating more liveable and connected communities.

The opportunity to construct something special that will com-pel admiration and appreciation from generations to come is a powerful motivator of those who enter Master Builders’ National Excellence Awards.

It is therefore very pleasing to see so many young people appearing in the 2015 awards, not only in the National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year, but also those who excelled in their contributions to award winning teams that produced other nationally signifi cant projects.

They can draw not only on the inspiration of outstanding building and construction projects but on the wealth of knowledge of the national judges who spent countless hours selecting winners from the 5000 best projects built by Master Builders from around Australia whose excellence underpins the calibre of the National Excellence Awards.

The quality of this year’s fi nalists cannot fail to inspire confi dence for our clients that Master Builders deliver the highest quality product for the best value.

NATIONAL RESIDENTIAL MASTER BUILDER OF THE YEAR

LA SPINA HOMESQueensland

Nestled on a hillside, ‘The Edge’ is a magnificent, contemporary home. Spotted gum screening at the entry hides the surprise beyond. The interior of the house is conceived as a large living room, which literally stretches into the horizon over the sea. Pilbara dreamtime marble softens the concrete wall, beams and ceiling. The dining tables, which were poured in-situ and are clad with marble, showcase the quality workmanship, which is consistent throughout the

home. A unique and spectacular project, La Spina Homes is a worthy winner of this National Residential Master Builder of the Year award.

NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AWARD

VR BUILDERSVictoria

Sustainability and energy efficiency were priorities in the construction of this home. The northerly aspect allows natural light through double glazed windows and maximises heating of the polished concrete slab. The spine of the house and key walls are constructed of rammed earth. The home is not

connected to the mains and is totally dependent on the catchment from the roof to the 160,000 litre tanks. A state-of-the-art, standalone solar system with a high quality bi-directional inverter supplies mains, quality electricity in all conditions.

ZORZI BUILDERSWestern Australia

Built around 1895, this Federation style, heritage-listed home was derelict and in danger of crumbling away. The original limestone walls have been restored using locally sourced material. The non-conventional design, based on linked pavilions, reflects the rural sheds and outbuildings of local farms. A simple arrangement of spaces allows the home to remain efficient, affordable and easy to maintain. Zincalume sheeting was selected for the roof and external walls have been clad in matching vertical sheeting. The gutters are built without fascia to emphasise the importance of water to this landscape. The house sits comfortably

CBUS NATIONAL MEDIUM DENSITY – 2 TO 5 DWELLINGS

CRITHARIS CONSTRUCTIONSNew South Wales

The project involved the demolition of the existing single storey brick house and the construction of a new three storey duplex. With its flowing lines and curved surfaces, the building promotes the feeling of a magnificent ocean liner, an effect which is enhanced by its location close to the Heads

enjoying views over the ocean and Sydney Harbour. The roof deck has been engineered to support a 12 person Jacuzzi. The project also includes a lift and a steam room.

CBUS NATIONAL MEDIUM DENSITY – OVER 5 DWELLINGS

LIBERTY BUILDERSVictoria

This four-storey building comprises two commercial offices, 31 dwellings and roof terraces. The most outstanding feature is the showpiece façade which fuses high art, photography and architecture to bring to life the ‘2 Girls’ portrait. Various textures and materials flow seamlessly into each other to form the striking artwork, including pre-cast embossed panels, Digiglass and Vitrapanel. Exposed concrete ceilings and floors to the ground and

first floors create a raw look.
