F inally, world leaders have come to realize that fat doesn’t make you fat and sick, carbs do. For decades, government programs and cereal boxes have lauded the benefits of whole grains. What we at Maximized Living have always known and what the world is finally coming to realize is that all grains turn to sugar and sugar is bad. There is what I call a nasty “hormone cascade” that people are either suffering

from or galloping towards based on diets full of breads, pastas, rice, flours, and all forms of sugar. It takes the hormone insulin and tons of it to process all of this sugar and sooner or later, your body gets burned out on the stuff. Eventually, most people suffer from some degree of insulin resistance and as a result, you just keep turning carbs into fat, cholesterol, and inflammation. What people don’t realize, is that insulin resistance is just the beginning of a horrifying cascade of hormones that cause you to gain weight, build fat, burn muscle, hurt, stress, get fatigued, and become unhealthy.

THE HORMONE CASCADE:

INSULIN“The fat-storage hormone”

Causes the storage of fat in the presence of too much energy.

LEPTIN“The fat manager”

When threre’s too much fat too consistently, like in the case of

insulin, the body becomes Leptin-resistant.

GHRELIN“The hunger hormone”

Being overweight throws off Grehlin and thus, your appetite.▶

CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP ASTHMA?

Maximized Living Co-Founder, Dr. Greg Loman, answers some commom questions from our readers. Have a question? email [email protected].

ANSWERS FROM THE

SOURCEI’ve been to many chiropractors, but Maximized Living is the only one where I have been required to do warm ups. What do the warm-ups on the wobble discs and neck things do exactly?

1

G

2 Why did my doctor recommend that I come in for adjustments three times a week? My previous chiropractic doctor didn’t request to see me so frequently.

G

I am trying to decide whether to follow the core or advanced plan. I used to be really healthy, but I’ve gained about 15 pounds from poor eating and stress, and have been feeling run down. Which plan do you recommend?

3

G

4 I want to bring my child in for chiropractic care, but I am nervous about damaging her spine. Can you help me understand why chiropractic care is safe for children?

G

At our Maximized Living clinics, we are committed to the highest quality of spinal correction possible. Our doctors are always advancing their training to give the best chiropractic adjustments and create spinal correction. These warm ups are a vital step in preparing your spine and warming it up so that your body has the best chance to accept and hold the adjustment. There are also many other critical benefits to the ligaments, muscles, and discs that are necessary for spinal correction.

There are two types of chiropractic. The first type is for pain relief where you will get adjustments only when you are symptomatic. The care we give is not only based on your symptoms, but also based on whether a vertebral subluxation is present. Our adjustments are made to actually correct the spinal condition and minimize interference to the central nervous system. This allows your body to improve function and maximize the ability of your body to heal and stay well.

Dr. Greg LomanMaximized Living Co-Founder

I recommend that you start with the advanced plan to get your body healing and losing weight as quickly as possible. The advanced plan is structured so that you are putting the greatest amount of nutrients possible into your body with the least amount of inflammatory grains and sugars.. After that, you will switch to the core plan so that you can maintain the health that you received while using advanced eating protocols. Think of it this way: the advanced plan is like going through corrective chiropractic, and the core plan is like the maintenance plan. However, because of the problems related to grains and sugars, many people choose to stay on the Advanced Plan.

For the same exact reason that dentistry is safe for children. The idea is to get your child’s spine healthy early so that he or she can have the best chance of having a healthy body. Then when they grow older, they will be living a maximized life, freer of drugs and surgery.

Sarah is an active teenage girl who participates in soccer, cheerleading, and track. She’s a star player on her

soccer team, but is often sidelined due to asthma. Her condition has caused at least 100 doctor or hospital visits. Once during an opportunity to score the winning goal against her school rival, she was taken down becauseshe couldn’t breathe. Luckily, the asthma attack cost Sarah the game instead of her life.

Many American children can relate to Sarah’s struggle. Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, especially for children. It affects an estimated seven million children under the age of 18, causes over one million emergency room visits, about 800,000 hospitalizations, and over five thousand deaths per year. Asthma costs $56 billion annually, and is a leading cause of school absences.

Fast-acting inhalers and other asthma

medications save thousands of lives in emergency situations, but very little attentionis placed on correcting the underlying cause.Drugs do not correct the cause of asthma. If things like toxic chemicals, poor nutrition,or nerve pressure interfere with normal functioning and healing processes ofthe body, then disease can occur.

Well-educated physicians and researchersknow that commonly, asthma is a neuropathic disorder, meaning itis caused by an imbalance or interferencein the nervous system. When there is interference between the brain’scommunication with the lungs, our nervoussystem loses the ability to properly control the immune system and surrounding structures like the openingand closing of our airways. When this happens, the airways become hypersensitive and react to environmental factors like pollen, dust, and temperature that do not cause problems for people without interference. Dysfunction in communication between the brain and body causes hyper-reaction of the immune system, and tissues in the lungs become inflamed and constrict, causing an asthma attack.

Chiropractic care could be the greatest “discovery” for a child suffering with asthma! While it is not a treatment for asthma, it is a treatment for what can cause asthma. Since

neuropathic asthma is a symptomof an improperly functioningnervous system, and since chiropractic is shown to correct imbalances and allow for proper communication between the brain and body, it can and does help asthma sufferers every day. Several published medical studies have shown that correction of spinal misalignments results in improvements in asthma patients. Studies also showed improvements in asthma symptoms, gains in immunologicalcapacity, decreases in immunosuppressant

cortisol, and other improvements in the immune system. These significantimprovements showed reduction in theincidence and severity of pathogenicinvasion of the airways.

In simple terms, when the body is functio-ning and healing properly by the control of the nervous system, asthma not as likely to“attack.” What has always been amazingto me is that there is nothing medicinecan offer to deliver the same results asspecific corrective chiropractic care.

WHAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AMAZING TO ME IS THAT THEREIS NOTHING MEDICINE CAN OFFER TO DELIVER THE SAME RESULTSAS SPECIFIC CORRECTIVECHIROPRACTIC CARE.

Standing Chest and Shoulder Opener: Stand in front of your desk or a wall, place your hands flat on the desk or wall in front of you. Bend forward at the hips, keeping a relatively flat back and feel the shoulders stretch and open.

01

Stretching has been long-touted for helping people feel calm and reducing feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression. New researchis showing that it also aids in reducing the stress hormone, cortisol. While the following sequence isn’t a replacement for your daily MaxT3burn, it will help you move, release tension, and combat stress on those days when you just can’t leave your desk.

Side Body Stretch: Sit with a straightback and relaxed shoulders. Drop the right arm to your side, reach lefthand toward the ceiling, and bend into your right side. Repeat on the left side.

02

Seated Cat/Cow: Sit up straight with both feet planted on the ground. Inhaledeeply, and arch your back. Exhale as you move back through the center and round your back as if you are pressing your belly button towards your spine. Repeat this series of movement five times.

Wrist and Forearm Release: Sit with a straight spine and both feet on the floor, lift one arm in front of you, parallel to the floor. Bend at the wrist so that your fingers are pointing toward the floor and with your other hand, pull the hand towards you. Return wrist to a parallel position and rotate your arm so that your palm is facing the ceiling. Bend at the wrist so that your fingertips are pointing down and with your other hand, gently encourage your fingers toward your body. Hold for 15-30 seconds.

04

Standing Gentle Forward Fold: Stand up straight with feet hip distance apart, and keep a comfortable bend in the knees. Bending at the hips, slowly bring your chest toward your thighs. Let the hands hang towards the ground or take your elbows in your hands. Hang here for as long as is comfortable and then slowly come back to standing.

YOUR SHAMPOO AND OTHER SUDSY PRODUCTS ARE PROBABLY GIVING YOU MORE THAN CLEAN HAIR AND SKIN

R esearch shows that many shampoos, soaps and other cosmetic products onthe market contain known carcinogens, neurotoxins or reproductive toxins1.Even more unsettling is that the industry, worth a whopping 71 million dollars, is

self-regulated. This means that the Food and Drug Administration is not able toregulate more than 10,000 unassessed ingredients used in cosmetic products1.In short, no one is looking out for you, except the cosmetics industry itself.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? According to the book “The Cancer Killers,” while a single exposure to toxins will notcause immediate illness, toxins can build up causing a “toxic burden” in your cells2. This can disrupt the endocrine system, reproductive system and could cause cancer, infertilityproblems, and neurological disorders2.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Good news! There are things you can do to avoid toxins in your soap and cosmetic products.

01 READ LABELS

Scanning the ingredient list isn’t just good practice for food products. Choosingsafe products for your skin is just as important as the quality of food that you put into your body. Look for ingredients you don’t recognize and look them up.

02 GET AN APP

Two watchdog organizations have made it simple to research your favorite soap and cosmetic products with easy-to-use apps.

Think Dirty®: Allows you to scan bar codes or search by name for over 200,000 products. You’ll receive a rating to help you gauge product safety, and shop for better-rated products. Available for the iPhone®, though a Google® Play app is currently in beta testing.

Skin Deep®: Similarly, this app allows you to research ingredients, scan bar codes, receiveratings, and get tips on safer products.Available for Apple® and Android®.

03 TRY MAKING YOUR OWN!

If you have an adventurous side and a little time, you can try making your own. A quick Google® search will source dozens of recipes for certain beauty products and could be a fun project for you and your older children. Sometimes homemade products are much less expensive than store-bought options!

04 TAKE ACTION

Dr. Seuss had it right: “Unless someonelike you cares a whole awful lot, nothingis going to get better. It’s not.”

Tell your local and state representatives that you want safer standards and regulationof cosmetic and beauty products. Wouldn’t it be heavenly to take any product youwanted off of the shelf and know that it wassafe for you and your family?

T.hat’s a question I get almost every day in my practice. Complaints about thyroid issues, menopausesymptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, endometriosis, ovarian

cysts, or declining testosterone in men are more common than ever. Hormones are a hot topic, and rightly so, because they control so much of the human body and they operate in a delicatebalance. First, you need to know the major players when it comes to hormones.

Estrogen- a female sex hormone that is responsible for growing and maturing theuterine lining during the menstrual cycle. Progesterone- a female sex hormone that is often referred to as the relaxing hormone. Progesterone is important in balancing the

effects of estrogen. A proper ratio of estrogen to progesterone is vital to regulate mood, sleep and many other functions of the body.

Cortisol- an adrenal hormone that is increased by high levels of stress. Chronically elevated cortisol levels have been linked to weight gain around the midsection, high blood pressure, reduced libido, type 2 diabetes, reduced immunefunction, and decreased testosterone in men.

Estrogen levels decline in women around perimenopause naturally. For years, this led women to believe that their hormone problems resulted from having too little estrogen in their bodies and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was born. HTR is designed to raise estrogen levels by using a synthetic form of estrogen.

Then, in 2002, the U.S. Federal Government warned of increased risks of breast cancer, stroke, heart disease, and blood clots inwomen using HRT.

A growing body of evidence now shows that the real cause of the hot flashes, night sweats and other symptoms of hormone imbalance is too much estrogen. Estrogen dominance — the condition of having higher estrogen relative to progesterone levels — is one that affects millions of women at all ages. Some causes of estrogen dominance are:

● Being overweight. The more fat cells you have, the more estrogen you produce. Progesterone receives no bump from weightgain, however, so progesterone remains

“DOC, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY HORMONES?!”

Page 11: 2015 May/Jun - Holy Hormones - Maximized Living Magazine

MAXIMIZED LIVING MAGAZINE 11

incapable of offsetting the estrogen increases associated with higher body fat.● Too much stress. Stress decreases the production of progesterone in the body. When a woman is stressed, her adrenal glands use the precursor to progesterone and instead use it to produce cortisol, the stress hormone. This is also a big deal for men, since increased cortisol means decreased testosterone.● Xenoestrogens. These are chemical compounds that have estrogen like effects on the body. Some of the biggest sources of xenoestrogens are pesticides sprayed on food, plastics and personal care products. The great news is that there is a solution to the problem of estrogen dominance. The 5 Essentials of Maximized Living are focused on removing the interference to your body’s ability

to heal and regulate itself. Let’s look at how we apply them to the issue of hormone imbalance:

● Essential #1- Maximized Mind. Decreasing your stress levels will decrease your cortisollevels. Take a minute to evaluate your priorities and look for ways to decrease the chaos of your daily life. The problem with the “rat race” is that even if you win, you’re still a rat.

● Essential #2- Maximized Nerve Supply. Your nervous system controls all function and healing in your body, including your hormones. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments actually lower cortisol levels by allowing your nerve systemto function properly.

● Essential #3- Maximized Quality Nutrition. If you are overweight or eating too many processed foods, the Advanced and Core nutrition plans will help you lose those extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight.

● Essential #4- Maximized Oxygen and Lean Muscle. The right type of exercise iscritical. Typical “cardio” workouts actually raise cortisol levels, but MaxT3 workouts decrease cortisol levels andraise testosterone.

● Essential #5- Minimized Toxins. By eliminating the “Toxic Top 5”, you are removing xenoestrogens from your life.

4Hormones are often referred to as “master controllers” because of the role they play in

maintaining healthy states within the body. When hormones are out of balance, you can experience a number of symptoms:

DISCOVER THE POWER WITHIN:TIPS TO HELP BALANCE YOUR HORMONES

• Issues with metabolism • Weight gain

• Mood swings • Sexual dysfunction

• Issues with growth and development

Balancing your hormones can be as easy as implementing simple diet and lifestyle changes. To get a full look at how your body is functioning, consider a customized nutritional assessment with your Maximized Living Doctor. They can offer you a look into your nutritionalstatus using tools like the Lifestyle Risk Questionnaire and the Comprehensive Metabolic Assessment. This will give you an in-depth assessment of your hormone and nutrient status and allow your doctor to create a customized diet and supplementation plan to get you back on track.

1 SLEEPGetting a good and full nights rest is a key factor in the regulation of grehlin and leptin, the hormones that make you feel hungry or full. Losing sleep can alter the ability of thesehormones to accurately signal the need for food intake. The result? Overeating when you’re tired because your hormones aren’t able to work properly.

2 ELIMINATE SUGARChronic consumption of sugar and carbohydrates (which breakdown into sugar)leads to insulin resistance. Insulin is the signal that keeps your blood sugar balanced. When your body no longer responds to the hormone insulin you end up with complications like diabetes, metabolic syndrome and more.

3 INCREASE YOUR GREENS INTAKECruciferous vegetables are high in sulfur rich compounds, specifically glucosinolates. Improving your intake of glucosinolates appears to be beneficial becauseit improves the metabolism of sex hormones, thus balancing circulating levels and managing issues like estrogen dominance.

4 MEDITATIONMeditation has been shown to improve the function of the immune systemand to decrease circulating levels of stress hormones. One study found that a practice of pranic meditation was powerful enough to reduce levels of corticotrophin, which drives the body’s response to stress, while simultaneously improving the body’s ability to fight off invading organisms.

The good news is you can reverse all of these symptoms by giving your body the nutrients it needs to push vital biochemical processes forward. Once you start moving forward again, you’ll see symptoms start to resolve and eventually disappear altogether – that’s the power of good nutrition.

Your Maximized Living Doctor has two ways to identify your individual nutrient needs. The first is the Lifestyle Risk Questionnaire (or LRQ), a comprehensive assessment that asks a series of questions and provides a subjective assessment of your nutritional deficiencies based on your lifestyle habits.

THE AUTOMATEDLIFESTYLE RISK QUESTIONNAIRE (LRQ)

Nutrition isn’t just about the foods we eat; it also includes the supplements we take to bridge the gap between diet and optimal health. When you’re lacking nutrients your body will adapt and compensate, which means: less energy, poordigestion, headaches, skin conditions, inflammation and cognitive decline, among other things.

For those who want to dig deeper and get an objective look at their nutrient status, Maximized Living offers a Customized Metabolic Assessment (CMA). The CMA uses laboratory testing to pinpoint specific nutrient deficiencies and to provide you with a nutrition plan tailored to your needs. Optimal health comes from taking an individualized approach to wellness; the one size fits all approach rarely works. Identifying nutritional deficiencies takes Essential #3 Maximized Quality Nutrition of Maximized Living to a new level.

Start living The 5 EssentialsTM of Maximized Living to the fullest and ask your doctor about the Lifestyle Risk Questionnaire

Re-establish your goal daily. Resolutions are becoming almost

cliche, but there is real value in assessing your current state,

dreaming about the future, and determining where you want

your life to go. The problem is that we only do this once per

year. The solution is to think about your goals every day and

let them inspire and motivate you.

Break your goal down into smaller, more palpable goals. Don’t

fret if you are not a task-oriented list-maker, or stellar planner.

Do at least one thing, no matter how small, that moves you

closer to your goal every day.

Be present in your life. Stop the cycle of pushing actions or

tasks to tomorrow, because you literally can’t reach your goal

tomorrow. You can only reach it today. Your daily choices add

up and before you know it, you will find that have met your

goal and are ready to set another one.

By now, you are six months into your New Years Resolution and doing great, right? Resolutions can be powerful catalysts for change, but too often amount to little more than nagging guilt over an unmet goal. Chances are you are still wearing those extra pounds, making a donationto the gym every month since you aren’t actually working out there, and you still haven’t taken that vacation or started your new hobby.

Perhaps you’ve given up on your resolution, or setting goals altogether. The good news is that it’s not too late to restart, whether you abandonedyour resolution four days, four weeks, or four months ago. Here are three practical steps to help you get moving towards your goals.
