Concrete Grinding

QuickChange Tooling for the LAVINA® System

Designed for either hard, super hard, medium, or soft concrete, our QuickChange tooling offers a variety of grinding solutions for your application. The QuickChange system features replaceable trapezoid-style pads that easily slide in and out of a reusable plate, with no bolting required! The new QuickChange design featured here fi ts all LAVINA® X and S machines. However, the QC tools designed for S and Pro machines are not compatible with the new X models.

Use the rectangular bar / segment tools when a more aggressive cut is needed. They are also recommended for non-cementitious coating removal, whereas the round button tools are more effective for cementitious coating removal. For lighter machines, such as 7-in, 13-in, 20-in and 21-in, we recommend using single button / segment tools. For heavier machines, such as 25-in and up, we recommend using double button / segment tools. For very aggressive grinding applications, use the single rectangular segment tools during the fi rst grinding step on all machines (tool life can vary signifi cantly based on the concrete hardness ).

Attaching QuickChange Tools to LAVINA® Machines (see page 50 for part numbers)QuickChange toolis are mounted directly to the heads of LAVINA X and S series machines ( no special QuickChange plates are needed). Our new X-QuickChange trapezoid pads fi t all LAVINA models using the QC attachment technology. However, the previous standard QuickChange tooling (designed for S, Pro and older models) is not compatible with the new X series machines. Foam plates are still required for attaching Velcro-backed tooling on all models. The older LAVINA® PRO and SPS machines require the old style QuickChange plates for mounting QuickChange tooling. Plates for PRO and SPS machines are not compatible with plates for X and S series machines. See page 50 for details.

Available with the same QuickChange technology as our standard metals, Superabrasive offers a wide variety of solutions for epoxy, paint, and glue removal as well as fl oor preparation.

Trapezoid pads with PCD segments and sacrifi cial bars are an excellent solution for thin coating removal.

Trapezoid Pads with PCD Segments are a very effective tool for aggressive stock and coating removal. They may also be used to prepare a fl oor for epoxy application.

Brazed pads for lippage removal are an essential part of the grinding process, as lippage removal is among the fi rst steps in preparing a fl oor for grinding. Superabrasive’s brazed lippage pads are recommended for lippage grinding, fl oor leveling, as well as thin coating removal. They perform excellently on concrete, natural, and engineered stones. Brazed lippage pads are designed for wet applications only.

SA Superthick discs in Metal Bond are the ideal choice for grinding concrete, stone, self-leveling and terrazzo fl oors. Available in 3 and 4 inch sizes, the SA-MB discs provide a great fi rst cut with a smooth scratch pattern for an even fl oor fi nish. Offered in two styles - with velcro backing for wet use only (part numbers listed below) and with QuickChange attachment suitable for both dry and wet applications (the part numbers for the QC style are listed on page 22).

The SA Superthick discs are also available in a special Terrazzo bond, designed for softer concrete, and in Copper bond for stone fl oors.

Metal and Copper Rings are an aggressive solution for removing stock and deep scratches in stone surfaces. They are designed for work on all natural stone surfaces including granite, marble, travertine, and others. We do not recommend these rings for work on concrete or engineered stone. Calibra and Cementina Grinding Discs

Calibra grinding discs are designed for the removal of diffi cult scratches which are left behind by the metal bond grinding steps. They are also useful for fl oor restoration, and can be used wet or dry. An essential tool for any operator who will be grinding, Calibra save valuable time by eliminating the need for multiple passes with metal tools. These discs are best for hard concrete applications, as the life of Calibra is shorter when used on soft or abrasive fl oors.

Cementina grinding discs are best suited for lightweight machines, such as LAVINA® 16 and LAVINA® 20-S, which have a relative grinding pressure of 2 to 6 lbs per square inch. Cementina achieves a very smooth and uniform fi nish, preparing the fl oor for resin polishing steps, if desired. We recommend wet application only for Cementina.

SA3 HP Superthick Discs: Superabrasive’s High Performance Superthick Discs are 3 inches in diameter, and Velcro backed. They feature a special bond for dry applications only. HP pads are extremely durable and can withstand the weight of heavier machines, 1000 lbs and more. Standard HP pads are designed exclusively for hard concrete applications.

SA3 HP65 Superthick Discs: Much like the standard SA3 HP pads, these are also 3 inches in diameter, and Velcro backed. They feature a special bond for dry applications only. Wet and Dry Concrete Polishing

WAFFEL polishing pads are available in two convenient sizes and styles, for wet and dry applications.

7 Inch WAFFEL Pads: The 7 Inch variety features a double segmented resin ring (two rows) for use on the LAVINA 7® and LAVINA 16® models. 9 Inch WAFFEL Pads: The 9 Inch WAFFELs feature a triple segmented resin ring (three rows) for use under larger, heavier machines such as LAVINA® 25L and LAVINA® 32. Also available in additional sizes, including10 3/4 and 13.5 inch for the 30G and 30L models.

All WAFFEL pads may be used either wet or dry, and are composed of the same quality Superabrasive resin. WAFFEL pads are also offered in HP bond for Extra Hard concrete applications. HP bond tools must be used dry only.

Turbo Cups, Copper Pads for Corners and Edges

Turbo cups with threads were specifi cally designed for grinding and shaping stone and concrete surfaces. Available in 4 and 5 inch sizes, our turbo cups are aggressive cutters at very high speeds, on even the hardest of surfaces. With a 5/8-11 thread, turbo cups are available in coarse, medium, and fi ne grits.

3N Copper Pads are an excellent solution for corner grinding and honing. They are available in 4 and 5 inch sizes from 30 to 200 grits. 3N copper pads may be easily attached to any hand-held grinder.

ShinePro® Floor Maintenance Guide...

• Follow the guide to the left for specifi c fl oor recommendations.

• ShinePro® pads may be used dry on high speed burnishers, and wet on auto scrubbers, buffers and other fl oor machines. For wet applications, use with water, or any approved cleaning solution. All water and residue should be reclaimed from the fl oor after cleaning.

• If using a cleaning solution, carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions and apply no more than the amount suggested. It is very important that operators not over apply cleaners to the fl oor, as this can leave behind residue and interfere with the fl oor’s natural shine.

• To maintain concrete or natural stone fl oors with minor scratching or etching, begin with one grit lower than the recommendation to the left, and continue as suggested.

• For fl oors requiring only two maintenance steps, operators may rotate these two steps daily; i.e., run BEIGE 1800 one night, WHITE BUFF the following night, and repeat.

• Do you want to dye the concrete? Color is entirely optional, and will require the following accessories for application: microfi ber mops; air pump sprayers or a special pump sprayer if applying an acetone-based dye; painters tape and masking paper to mask off all areas that should not receive any color. Note: water- and acetone-based dyes are for interior applications only.

• What are the electrical requirements? The availability of electrical options can sometimes determine the appropriate machine for your job. Be sure you know the voltage of your machine before plugging it into the circuit. If you have a regular 220V machine, the Lavina Quick 220V system will help you put a 220V 20amp circuit in almost any residential home using 2 separate 110V outlets on different circuits. Never plug a 220V machine into a 480V circuit! A high voltage machine will require a special generator, unless you have access to 480V circuit.

What are the steps for achieving a polished a concrete fl oor?Again, the steps for polishing concrete depend on the condition of the existing concrete and the level of shine desired, and can vary greatly from job to job. Contact Superabrasive for additional information about the appropriate steps for your specifi c job.

Can I skip steps?No. In order to achieve professional results, it is important not to skip steps.

What is the difference between terrazzo bond and metal bond tools (not referring to QuickChange)?Terrazzo bond tooling is designed for processing soft concrete, while metal bond should be used to grind medium to hard concrete only. It is important to understand the hardness of the concrete before beginning work, as working with the wrong bond will result in short tool life and unsatisfactory results. See page 51 for a selection of hardness testers.

What is the difference between the 1 and 2 button/segment QuickChange pads? Why are there two options?We offer a wide variety of tooling so that operators may customize their equipment for nearly any application. The less buttons/segments on the plate, the more aggressively the machine will grind. Therefore, a set of single button/segment QuickChange pads will grind much more aggressively than a set of two button/segment pads.

How do I decide between grinding dry and grinding wet?This will often be determined by the location of the job, as some sites are not appropriate for wet grinding. In general, wet grinding is a bit more aggressive than dry, and can be the best option for some jobs that involve coatings removal, etc. Dry grinding requires less clean up, but will always require a vacuum unit for dust removal. In short, the decision to grind wet or dry will be determined by the application, job site location, and preference of the operator.

Why should I densify the fl oor?Densifying the fl oor will prepare the concrete for polishing and is the best preparation for ensuring the best polish possible. Soft concrete fl oors should always be densifi ed, and in some cases more than one application is necessary.

Why is it so important to clean between steps?This will remove any residual diamond material from the fl oor and prevent scratching during the next step.

How many square feet can I process in a day?This is highly subjective and depends on the condition of the existing concrete and whether you are exposing aggregate or polishing the cream only. Uneven fl oors, or fl oors with epoxies and glues that must be removed will take much longer to process. Operators should keep in mind that the grinding portion of the job is the most time consuming, and once the polishing steps are reached, the job will progress much more quickly. In general terms, a LAVINA® 20 may process up to 500 square feet per hour, while a LAVINA® 32 may cover up to 1200 square feet per hour.

How do I know what to charge per square foot?Again, this is very subjective and will depend on the condition of the existing concrete, level of shine desired by the customer, whether any epoxies or coatings will be removed, whether the fl oor will be dyed, the current market rate, etc. Contractors should consider all of these variables before quoting a customer, as they greatly affect the amount of time it will take to complete the job.

Why polish concrete?Polished concrete has many advantages: it is durable, easy to maintain, cost effective, dust proof, LEED friendly, has increased light refl ectivity, and is slip resistant, among other benefi ts. The life expectancy of a concrete fl oor will far surpass that of most other fl ooring surfaces, making it a common choice for warehouses, manufacturing facilities, large stores, schools, hospitals, and government buildings. Polished concrete fl oors are also becoming more popular in residential homes. Durable enough for heavy machinery, forklift activity, and extensive foot traffi c, polished concrete is easy to clean, requiring only occasional mopping. These fl oors also eliminate the need for special waxes or coatings, as well as the associated labor, time, and expense to apply them. Polished concrete fl oors are generally no slicker than untreated concrete surfaces and are about 40% less slippery than a hardwood fl oor, waxed linoleum or polished marble. The high light refl ectivity of polished concrete is another important aesthetic benefi t, especially for offi ce buildings, hotels, restaurants, and other public facilities that want to project a bright, clean, professional image. Furthermore, polished concrete may be stained, stenciled or engraved to add character and further improve its appearance. The available options for coloring concrete have never been greater, and there is also an endless array of other decorative effects. In short, polished concrete is a popular fl ooring solution because of its practical advantages, as well as its decorative appeal.

What do I need to get started? We recommend a complete surface preparation system including: a fl oor machine(s), vacuum system(s), diamond tooling, chemicals (densifi er and sealer) and dyes (optional). It is also important to receive proper training to ensure that your projects are completed in a professional, timely and cost effective manner.

Which machine and tooling should I select? Choosing the proper machine and tooling is critical for the success of the job, and the following questions should be addressed fi rst:

• How big is your project, and how much time do you have to complete it? This will determine the size of the machine and vacuum needed, as well as how much tooling will be required. For example, a LAVINA® 20 is appropriate for small residential projects, like garages or patios, whereas larger residential or commercial projects will require a larger, more powerful machine such as LAVINA® 25, 30, 32, or 38.

• How old is the concrete? Freshly poured concrete fl oors require at least 28 days to cure. Conversely, older concrete should be inspected for pits and cracks, which may be treated by a product such as Quick Mender®.

• What condition is the concrete in? The condition of the concrete will determine the initial grinding steps needed to prepare the fl oor for polishing which include coatings or epoxy removal, etc. If the fl oor is in optimal shape, you may begin with 120 grit metals, but if the fl oor is uneven and blemished, you should begin with a coarser grit, such as 30.

• How much aggregate would you like to expose? If you want to show aggregate, you must grind the concrete more aggressively (longer and deeper) than if you simply want to polish only the cream.

• How hard is the concrete? Medium to hard concrete requires soft bond diamond tooling such as metal bond, or MC to HC QuickChange tooling. Conversely, soft concrete requires a harder bond such as terrazzo, or SC QuickChange tooling. All tooling featured in this catalog clearly indicates its appropriate application.

• How much shine do you want? If a honed fi nish with less shine is desired, you may stop polishing after grit 220 or 400. However, a shiny mirror-like fi nish, will require the complete system up to 3500 or 8500 grit and possibly a sealer.

• Grinding wet or dry? This will sometimes depend on the job and job site. Most operators prefer the dry process, as it requires less clean up; however, wet grinding is best for some applications. Keep in mind that dry grinding will always require a vacuum for dust removal.

• Is your project indoors or outdoors? This will determine which sealer and dyes are needed. Some guards and sealers are appropriate for indoor applications only. Water- and acetone-based dyes are also for interiors only because they are not UV stable. Others such as ColorJuice™, however, is UV stable and ideal for concrete porches, patios, driveways, sidewalks and pool decks. Warranty Policy for LAVINA® Machines

Definition“Goods” shall mean a LAVINA grinding/polishing machine purchased from and delivered by Superabrasive or by a Superabrasive-appointed distributor or dealer.

Liability for DefectsSuperabrasive warrants, from the time of delivery and receipt by the original customer, new and unused products sold by Superabrasive or Superabrasive-appointed distributors or dealers. Goods shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship.

Superabrasive or a Superabrasive-appointed repair facility shall either replace or repair any defects in the Goods resulting from faulty design, materials, or workmanship. Products repaired or replaced during the warranty period shall be covered by the foregoing warranty for the remainder of the original warranty period, or ninety (90) days from date of the repair or shipment of the replacement, whichever is longer. Spare parts for repair will be either new or equivalent to new.

Superabrasive will cover the shipping charges for the transportation of the machine to Superabrasive (or an approved repair facility) and back to the customer (within the contiguous 48 United States) in the event that the damage occurs and is reported within the first 200 operating hours. Thereafter, the customer will have to cover the shipping charges to Superabrasive and back.

ComplaintA complaint must be made to Superabrasive or a Superabrasive-appointed distributor or dealer within the warranty period. A valid warranty certificate, or other documents confirming the date of delivery of said Goods, shall be presented at the time of the complaint.

LimitationSuperabrasive will not warranty Goods after the specified warranty period from the time of delivery and receipt by the original customer, or the specified operating hours on the machine - whichever occurs first.

Superabrasive shall not be liable for any defects that are caused by circumstances that occur after the Goods have been delivered and whilst the Goods are in the possession of the purchaser. Furthermore, the warranty does not include normal wear and tear or deterioration. Wear parts are not warranted. Superabrasive is not liable for defects arising out of use of non-OEM parts.

Shipping charges, if covered by Superabrasive, must be agreed upon in advance and approved by Superabrasive.

Liability• In the case of defective products, SUPERABRASIVE will replace only the quantities determined

to be defective.• We are not liable for any injury, loss, or damage that is caused by improper use of the

product(s). It is the responsibility of the customer to educate himself/herself and fully understand the products’ intended use; therefore, the customer assumes all risks associated with the use of the product(s).

• Warranties do not apply to any products which have been altered, changed or modified in any way.

Business Terms


After the first 200 operating hours, repairs shall be carried out given that the purchaser at his own expense returns the Goods to Superabrasive, or to a Superabrasive-appointed distributor, dealer or repair facility.

The warranty herein is non-transferable, and only applies to the original owner or purchaser of the machine. A warranty card must be submitted to Superabrasive within 30 days of purchase in order for the foregoing warranty to apply. The Warranty is void if the purchaser has not followed the maintenance plan stipulated by the machine’s manual. The warranty is void if the purchaser repairs said Goods himself, or if repairs are conducted by a repair facility that is not approved by Superabrasive.

Superabrasive’s liability does not cover defects which are caused by faulty maintenance, incorrect operation, faulty repair by the purchaser, or by alterations conducted without Superabrasive’s prior written consent. The same applies to any alterations of the Goods or services performed by another party other than Superabrasive, a Superabrasive-appointed distributor, or a Superabrasive-approved repair facility. The warranty is not applicable on a defect that arises due to tools or parts that are not original to Superabrasive.

Replaced defective parts shall be placed at Superabrasive’s disposal and shall become property of Superabrasive. If such defective parts are replaced within 200 operating hours, the shipping charges will be covered by Superabrasive.

In warranty complaint cases, when no defects are found for which Superabrasive is liable, Superabrasive shall be entitled to compensation for the labor, material cost, and shipping charges, incurred by Superabrasive as a result of the complaint. Warranty Policy for LAVINA® Vacuums

To ensure registration and activation of warranty coverage, the warranty card must be mailed to the manufacturer within 30 days from date of purchase; failure to do so may void the warranty. If your warranty card is missing, visit us at www.superabrasive.com to complete and submit one online.

Superabrasive offers a guarantee on LAVINA® vacuums, covering manufacturing and material defects, for a period of 24 months from the date of purchase, as invoiced by Superabrasive. The following conditions pertain to this warranty:

• Applies only to the original owner and is not transferable.• Vacuum must not be dismantled and tampered with in any way.• This warranty does not cover any failures or defects caused by normal wear and tear, accidental

damage, damage during transport, improper handling, repairs conducted by an unauthorized facility (without prior authorization by Superabrasive), or operation that is not in compliance with the instructions provided in this manual. Superabrasive denies all responsibility for damages or injuries, to any persons or objects, caused by improper operation of the vacuum unit.

• This warranty will become invalid in the event that equipment or accessories used on/with the vacuum unit are not supplied or approved by Superabrasive.

• Covered components proven defective will be repaired or replaced at no charge.• This warranty does not apply to any repair of/to of proprietary parts, nor does it cover cleaning or gen-

eral maintenance.• This warranty does not apply to items with aftermarket alterations, changes, or modifications.

LAVINA® Warranty


• This warranty is limited to repair or replacement of covered components and reasonable labor expens-es.

• In the event of a warranty claim, the vacuum unit must be returned to Superabrasive, or an authorized facility, for a warranty investigation, and subsequent warranty repair or replacement.

• All warranty returns must be shipped freight prepaid.• This warranty is in lieu of and excludes every condition of warranty not herein expressly set out and all

liability for any form of consequential loss or damage is hereby expressly excluded.

The above warranty conditions may be changed only by Superabrasive. Superabrasive reserves the right to inspect and make a final decision on any machine returned under this warranty. This warranty applies to new, used, and demo machines.

Superabrasive agrees to repair or replace, free of charge, any parts which have failed due to manufacturer or material defects. Repairs must only be performed at authorized service facilities that have been approved by Superabrasive. Shipping and handling fees associated with warranty claims must be pre-paid by the customer / claimant.

In the event that a warranty investigation determines that the damage or unit failure is not attributed to manufacturer or material defects, all costs associated with the repair of the vacuum will become the direct responsibility of the claimant. If payment is not rendered for such services, Superabrasive will assume ownership of the machine and any associated parts in possession.

Superabrasive does not authorize any person or representative to make any other warranty, or to assume for us any liability in connection with the sale and operation of our products.

The manufacturer is also not liable in the event that the customer fails to submit a Warranty Certificate, fails to follow manual instructions, uses non-original spare parts, or fails to service/clean the vacuum regularly and properly.

Vacuums may not be returned to Superabrasive Inc. for credit or repair without prior authorization. Please contact Superabrasive Inc. or your local distributor for authorization and issuance of a return authorization number. This number along with the serial number of the vacuum must be included on all packages and correspondences. Vacuums returned without prior authorization will remain property of the sender and Su-perabrasive Inc. will not be responsible for these. No vacuums will be credited after 90 days from the date of Superabrasive’s invoice. All returns must be shipped freight prepaid. All returns may be exchanged for other equipment or parts of equal dollar value. If vacuums are not exchanged, they are subject to a fifteen percent (15%) restocking fee.
