Lanting Enterprises – since 1972Lanting Enterprises LLC is a family partnership owned and operated by three brothers: Jim, John and Bob

Lanting. We are located in South Central Idaho approximately 20 miles south of Twin Falls and 20 miles north

of Jackpot, Nevada.

Our cattle graze on high mountain desert pasture developed to adjust to an average rain fall of approximately 9

inches of rain. Cattle survive on thousands of acres with minimal resources. Cattle graze out 6-7 months and are

brought in, in the fall to graze off residue feed from irrigated fields of alfalfa, malt barley, wheat and corn.

Cows must produce and breed back to stay in the herd. Cattle raised in this environment are rugged and strong

footed. We raise our registered Simmental and SimAngus cows in the same environment as commercial cows.

Calves are born in February – April. Calves are weaned in September-October with moderate weaning weights,

550-700 pounds, depending on the available feed. They are then placed on a growing ration with only corn silage

and alfalfa hay. Adequate body condition lets these bulls go straight to work.

Bulls and heifers are closely selected for growth, conformation, disposition, carcass quality, maternal traits and

sound feet and legs. We are especially proud that we rank above the American Simmental Associations National

average in calving ease, weaning weight, milk, marbling, API and TI.

Private treaty of bulls begins in December. Bulls are fed free until April 15th with a $3.00 a day charge after that

date. Bulls are fertility tested by March 15th unless needed earlier. All necessary tests will be done to facilitate

the travel to different locations. Payment is decided as each agreement is made.

We have developed a demand for selecting sight unseen bulls, however, I would rather you select your own.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDsare the most accurate and effective toolavailable for comparing genetic levels. Inusing EPDs, the difference between twosires’ EPDs represents the unit differenceexpected in the performance of their prog-eny. For example, if sires A and B haveEPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit differencewould be expected in their progeny (movingfrom -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to usingEPDs is knowing what units they are ex-pressed in. For example, if the above casereferred to weaning weight EPDs, A wouldbe expected to sire 15-pounds more weaningweight than B. If calving ease were thetrait, A would be expected to sire 15-percentmore unassisted births in first-calf heifers;in other words, if B sired 30 assists in agroup of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to re-quire 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chartis required to determine where a bull’sEPDs rank him relative to other bulls in thebreed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparisonof genetic levels for many economically im-portant traits, they only provide a piece of theeconomic puzzle. That’s where $ indexescome in. Through well-conceived, rigorousmathematical computation, $ indexes blendEPDs and economics to estimate an animal’soverall impact on your bottom line. The sametechnology that led to the dramatic progressin swine, poultry and dairy genetics over thelast several decades was used to develop thefollowing $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for useon the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to main-tain herd size retained and the remainingheifers and steers put on feed and sold gradeand yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use onmature Angus cows with all offspring put onfeed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which indexto use; if you’re keeping replacements useAPI, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zeroin on the unit difference between bulls. (Asdescribed above, index units are in dollarsper cow exposed.) The difference can be usedto determine how much a bull is worth com-pared to another. Or, put another way, howmuch you can pay for one bull compared toanother. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure abull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s indexvalue ranks him relative to other bulls in thebreed.
