Welcome to the 2015 AAF Pensacola American Advertising Awards!

After months of planning, judging and anticipation, I am excited that tonight is finally here! The success of tonight’s gala is due to our outstanding American Advertising Award team, which consists of our talented American Advertising Award Chairs: Riannon Boven, Stacie Dice and Lindsey Braxton Shook as well

as a multitude of volunteers. These individuals, along with our loyal sponsors, have dedicated countless hours and generous contributions to make this evening a special experience. The American Advertising Awards honors excellence in advertising and sets the highest standards in the fields of advertising, marketing and design. This competition culminates at the local level with over 200 AAF affiliated chapters nationwide. Local winners will advance to the 4th District AAF regional competition and those winners proceed to the AAF national finals. Inclusive of students and professionals alike, the American Advertising Awards truly represent our industry’s best and brightest. This year has been an exciting time of growth in our local area. We have held true to our roots and demonstrated that Pensacola is accurately titled the “upside of Florida.” Pensacola is creating and evolving—and with any change, opportunities are generated. The students with featured work here tonight are representatives of the future of our field. They are the best rising stars of our industry. One of my goals as president this year was to create a stronger connection between the club and students. To continue this mission, I encourage the students to take any opportunity to network with the professionals in the room. I also encourage the professionals here tonight to lend a hand to one of these developing leaders and possibly take them under your wing. Each and every professional started out as beginners and had help to get where they are today. Lastly, the AAF Pensacola Board is the backbone of our organization. I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of the hard work, dedication and hours of volunteer time you have given to our community, the advertising industry and AAF Pensacola. I cannot begin to list every one of you who has made this year absolutely incredible, but I sincerely thank you.

Thank you.

Andy GosendiAn art director with a clean desk and an organized plan of attack is somewhat alien in the creative world. But that’s only part of what makes Andy so unique.

Moving early in his childhood from Bogota, Colombia to later studying graphic design at Miami University (OH), Andy’s diverse experience is evident in how he approaches each project. His interest and hobbies are as diverse as he is. From tailgating college football games (GO BUCKEYES!) to gallery openings, whatever it is, Andy brings to bear his unique perspective on behalf of clients. He helps to ensure that what needs to be communicated does, in fact, get communicated. And in a way that makes people stop and take notice. So much so that he’s managed to pick up several awards along the way for client work including 20+ ADDY awards (local, district and national), 10+ American Graphic Design awards, a SXSW website finalist as well as being featured in publications such as the Logo Lounge and American Corporate Identity series.

Jennifer Peck, Senior Graphic Designer | Megan Gonzalez, Account Manager

Margaret Roberts, Copy Writer | Pola Young, Creative Director

Securing the American South: The Creek War and the War of 1812 is an innovative course that expands the learning process by taking students beyond the traditional, lecture-style classroom and introducing them to history first-hand.

In recognition of the bicentennials of the Creek War, the War of 1812 and the First Seminole War, the course will highlight the larger cultural, social, economic, and political ramifications of Indian, African, European, and American interaction on the Southern frontier from the later 1600s to the mid-1800s.

Students will meet on campus during the first half of the course to discuss readings that will provide them a larger understanding of the import of the conflict and the various people involved.

During the second half of the course students will visit seven prominent sites in Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida. Each site visit will include a guided tour by leading scholars noted in their field and well published on subjects concerning the Southern frontier.

High Impact Practices: Real American history. Real world opportunities.

CAN A NETWORK OF CITIZENS INSPIRE COMMUNITY CHANGE?

ROBIN RESHARD THINKS SO.

Robin Reshard works to bring peopletogether to make our community a better place. As co-founder of the Pensacola Network, Robin’s mission is to help build African-American businesses.

On the fourth Friday of every month, you will find Robin and dozens of other people at DeVilliers Square talking about ways to change our community for the better.

“I want people to fulfill their purpose,” says Robin. “I want Pensacola Network to be a vehicle to help them achieve that purpose, whether it’s for business or personal.”

Read about Robin and other bright spots in our community in the StuderInstitute’s Pensacola Metro Report.

Coming August 24 In the Pensacola News Journal Or find it at STUDERINSTITUTE.COM

CITIZEN-POWERED CHANGE

For forty years, we’ve supported economic development by investing

in our local farmers and their produce. As your natural and organic

local grocery, we’re strengthening our farming communities .

Together, let’s put community back on the table.

Can a blueberry be just as concerned about our local economy as you are?

Jami SandersonJami Sanderson began her career in print design in 1984 B.C., (before computers). During her career Jami has worked for printing companies, screenprinters, newspapers and advertising agencies. Along the way, she has done everything from creating full-page, full-color ads on an Apple Macintoch Classic II (which had a 6-inch black and white monitor), to setting up complete digital workflows for companies such as Kwik-Kopy Corporation and the New York Times Company...plus many tasks in between. Jami is an ADDY-winning designer and has been with Appleyard Agency for 15 years. Currently she is working on learning digital and web production, proving everyday that you are never too old to learn something new, and that the only constant in life is change. She’s married to her husband Randy and they have three (!!!) teenagers, a daughter, Kaitlyn, and two sons, James and Jonathan. In whatever spare time she can manage, Jami loves to ride her Vespas. She aspires to compete in the coast-to-coast Scooter Cannonball Run in 2016.

Sarah TurnerA Pensacola native, avid traveler/adventurer, animal lover and long time associate at EW Bullock, Sarah is always excited to judge design and art competitions where students are involved. She feels student work is like a breath of fresh air when it comes to their approach to ideas, copywriting and design. “They are fearless and under no client thumb so they go for it.”

A 30+ year veteran art director, Sarah has experienced all aspects of working at a local agency from graphic design, art and creative direction, copywriting and video editing to photography and illustration. Sarah’s creative thinking has extended her reach into other agency departments including marketing, public relations and account services. She has two degrees from Auburn University: a BFA in Visual Communication and BS in Art Education. After graduation and two years in Atlanta, she returned to Pensacola and joined EW Bullock as a graphic designer. She has won numerous Addy awards for her work on local, regional and national levels as well as recognition for her photography, oil painting and poster designs.

Since, she feels, creativity is the fabric of her being, Sarah habitualy creates, whether through painting, drawing, sewing, writing, remodeling her flat or any number of outlets she can find…in an effort to satisfy what she sometimes calls “a curse”, be it a good curse!

The Didot typeface family was designed by Firmin Didot, a french printer, in 1783. The Didots were a family of french printers, punch-cutters, and publishers. Firmin Didot, a printer and typographer, spent time punching out letters and casting them as type. Firmin punched out many versions of his letters while his brother Pierre Didot continued to use them in his printing. As the years went on Didot was developed during Firmin’s process of punching letters. The inspiration for the typeface was John Baskerville’s type. Firmin took note of how Baskerville experimented with the stroke contrast and more condensed elements. Didot, the typeface, is a contemporary face that compares to type designed by Giambattista Bodoni in Italy. Didot evokes characteristics of the Age of Enlightenment; bringing reason, thought, and clear, legibility giving it a look of neoclassic as well. Moving into the digital age, Didot suffered at smaller point sizes. The hairlines nearly disappeared in the smaller point sizes, but Adrian Frutiger developed a successful adaption. Frutiger, a typographer, developed the new adaption of Didot for the Linotype foundry. With a simple fix, Frutiger developed a usable typeface by increasing stroke weight on the hairlines at smaller point sizes.

On January 15, 2013 Utopia, a British thriller-drama action television series, used the Futura type for their title.
