Work Experience Related to this Position:

Design Services Co-Manager for the State of Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management:

Co-Manager of the Utah State Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM), acting both as the policemen of the funds to ensure proper expenditures, and assisting the State of Utah and various departments of the State with their physical plant needs per established budgets. Budgets were met, projects completed on time, and the confidence in the DFCM as noted by other departments was increased by 40%. Headed a group that wrote a proposal to the Utah State Building Board—which was subsequently provided to the State Legislature. This was later used to write a law allowing the use of the design-build method of construction, and it’s varied other possibilities, by state government.

Architect Department Manager for one of the largest Developers based in Utah:

Provided training necessary to improve the quality of drawings and reduce the time to complete the work by 50%. Also headed the transition from using AutoCAD Drafting Program to Revit, over a period of six months. This provided better coordination of the work, reducing the problems in construction and overall bid costs. Assisted in establishing budgets thru bidding processes, worked on new greenfield projects. Designed spaces for tenants and greyshell buildings.

Architectural Project Manager:

Knowledge and expertise in field management services for projects, and problem solving of difficulties in the field, have resulted in timely completion of projects within scope and on budget. One project in particular—an office and retail establishment in Salt Lake City, Utah—resulted in the contractor providing a $5,000 check back to the owner for the project being completed on time and below the budget (including all change orders). I also gained experience with many other different project delivery methods.

Estimator:

Before starting as an estimator for this employer, the company’s average win rate of project bids was 5%. After 25 months of employment, through the revision of bidding processes, software/spread sheets, and the estimating process used in bidding—the win rate increased to 40%.

Specifications Writer:

Established a standard, reusable specification for new (and remodeling) projects for the largest Utah-based commercial retail office developer. By using this new standard, the owner received cost savings through the rapid production of project specifications—the timeliness of which increased by over 50%. The owner also realized a savings in new project construction documents costs through professional detailed specifications review and writing for subsequent capital improvement projects.

Project Architect:

Hired by the local office of an international architectural group after the previous architect/project manager left their firm to complete (26) projects for them in various stages of design. Additionally tasked to provide successful approvals of all the projects through the California Office of State Architect. The schedule to complete all these tasks, including bidding and construction was (14) months. All projects were completed on time. One specific project was to provide design/ approvals and construction in (7) months for the merging of two elementary school sites, through innovative design strategies for building renovations and the use of portable classroom structures. The main buildings were competed two weeks ahead of schedule, and the last portable classroom was brought to life with electrical power at 11:30pm, the night before the first day of class; on time, and under budget.

Adjunct Professor at the Salt Lake Community College:

Adjunct professor in 2007 to teach the Construction Documents Technology course, Basic Design, and Introduction to Architectural Design Professions at Salt Lake Community College. The Construction Design Documents Technology is a required course for all architect and construction management students. Assisted in teaching the other courses as required.

Volunteering Positions:

Construction Specifications Institute: Member for fifteen years, directed California College Student Activities, as well as Directing their Student Design Competitions, coordinated competitions with up to seven different colleges. These efforts resulted in receiving the CSI National Level Andrew J. Drozda Award for student Activities. Was also the Utah, Salt Lake City Chapter President, presently the Education Committee Chair, teaching Construction Documents Technologist certification, Certified Construction Specifier, and Project Management courses twice a year.

Boy Scouts of America: Cub Master, Den Leader, Scout Master, Merit Badge Counselor, member of various committees.
