About WIDS
Our vision Warwick International Development Society (WIDS), a society of the University of Warwick,
aims to provide a platform for engagement, inspiration and learning opportunities, establishing
itself as Warwick’s central and leading society in world affairs.
Background WIDS organises the UK’s largest student-run development summit, the Warwick Development
Summit (WDS) and every year, WIDS has hosted renowned speakers including the former
President of Uruguay, Mr. Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera; Chief Economist of the World Trade
Organisation, Mr. Patrick Low; Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and
Director of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, Mr. Jeffrey Sachs, all of whom have
engaged and inspired students from around the world. Before and after every Summit, WIDS
produces magazines centred on the theme of the summit for the year. The magazine is circulated
around the University, engaging a broad audience all over campus and beyond.
WIDS recently launched an internship scheme in collaboration with the International Rice
Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Banos, Philippines, providing internship opportunities for
students from the University of Warwick to experience work overseas.
Alongside the Summit and Internship Scheme, WIDS continues to host many events throughout
the year, ranging from career events, monthly lecture series to networking and social events.
WIDS has maintained a website over the years committed to providing regular news regarding
the society, its events, sponsors and other development-related news.

WIDS This Year
Warwick Development Summit
For 2014/15 we aim to look at development from an array
of perspectives. This vision incorporates that of regions as
well as specializations. In looking at development in this
way, we hope to shift away from the mainstream view and
approach to development that focuses solely on things
such as aid, international NGO’s and charities. We want
to go beyond this, looking at: engineering infrastructure,
regional entrepreneurship, medicine and pharmaceuticals, the rule of law and ideas that engages
a new focus for discussion.
This year’s vision endorses innovation, discussion, and ideas and concepts. As we approach the end of
the 2015 Millennium goals, we want to look back at development and assess what has really been
changed in the past few years, and what new steps should be taken to approach development.
Innovation is key in the branding of new ideas, and this will inevitably encapsulate a broader
audience. Let’s make development exciting!

WIDS Monthly Lecture Series and Career, Networking &
Social Events Building on the successes of previous years, WIDS plans on increasing the number of learning
opportunities available to its members by formalizing a monthly lecture series, inviting speakers
from around the world to engage students at the University of Warwick every month. In
addition, WIDS aims to expand the opportunities members can take advantage of to find out
more about possible career paths as well as socialise and make lasting friendships.
WIDS had more than 150 official members from the University of Warwick in the academic
year 2013/14. The membership as continued to increase and we plan on expanding it to 300
throughout the academic year 2014/15.
WIDS Website, Blog and Social Media Presence In addition to its official website, WIDS is starting a blog on development, inviting contributions
from professionals, academics and students from around the world. WIDS has also developed an
active social media presence through Twitter and Facebook.

Being a Partner
WIDS this year would like to continue with our current partnerships whilst expanding and
pursuing further partnerships with:
Research Institutes
Banks
Non-Governmental Organisations
Think Tanks
Universities
Charities
The aim is to expand the presence of WIDS both nationally and internationally while also
creating opportunities for members to gain experience through internships and voluntary work
with organisations in development.
Current Partnerships The current partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) provides members
with internship opportunities at their facility in the Philippines. IRRI is a non-profit
independent research and training organisation that works towards eradicating poverty and
hunger and improving environmental sustainability. Our partnership with IRRI enables our
members to partake first-hand in upcoming research which may be used as a solution in tackling
world hunger.
Future Partnerships This year, WIDS is not only continuing its partnership with IRRI, but is also pursuing
partnerships with various organisations across the world.
A partnership with WIDS is extremely rewarding as you will be featured in many of our
networks and resources such as pamphlets, posters, brochures and various social networking
websites, for example Facebook and Twitter. WIDS successfully attracts and engages many
students that are really passionate about development and together, our partnership will serve a
mutual purpose of expanding WIDS, truly engaging members in development while
simultaneously enabling your organisation to target the members of our society.
We aim to collaborate with organisations based in the UK and abroad to offer exceptional
students the chance to experience developmental organisations.

Internships Some partners may offer a competitive internship scheme for students where interested
applicants will undergo a rigorous application process comprising of a submitted essay and
formal interview where students are then shortlisted for the internship programme.
As part of our outreach programme, we also aim to work in partnership with students from other
universities around the world, offering them a chance to participate in our internship
opportunities too. This scheme has significant benefits as it advertises partners to many of the
top institutions around the world. The programme ensures that the successful intern is well
equipped with excellent research abilities and is passionate about development issues.
As a non-profit organisation, we hope that partners interested in creating and/or offering an
internship scheme through WIDS will fully or partially fund the internship.
Ultimately, partners have the unique opportunity in helping WIDS achieve its objective of
providing a platform for engagement, inspiration and learning opportunities.
