Stanley Mountain Vacuum Coffee System ($50; shopstanley-pmi.com) It may look like a thermos, but it promises so much more for the coffee connoisseur. Like a Russian nesting doll the thermos disassembles into a surprising number of pieces: pot, two cups, press and a storage area for grounds. Add a litre of water and they create French press style coffee and then store it in a leak-proof vacuum bottle. It keeps hot for 15 hours or iced for 13.
Sugoi Zap Bike Jacket ($160; sugoi.com) In daylight the Zap looks like a regular waterproof bike jacket, with casual colours, a drop tail, long sleeves and rear zip pocket. Shine artificial light on it, though, and it becomes another beast entirely. The fabric is a blend of polyester, polyure-thane and 25 percent glass beads. When a light, like car headlights, hit the glass beads the entire jacket shines with an eye catching pop. It ensures you’ll be seen when it really counts, but blend in the rest of the time.
Under Armour Performance Chino ($80; underarmour.com) UA calls these chino style slacks the “best pair of pants you’ll ever put on.” My wife and I agree. For her, they’re fashionably slim, especially tapering from the knee to ankle, and snug in the butt. For him, they fit loose through the waist and the fabric is soft, super stretchy, wrinkle resistant, wick moisture and pockets are deep and actually hold change. I could comfortably rock climb in them and wear them out to dinner in the city. They’re my new fav pants.
Timex Ironman RunX20 GPS ($150; timex.ca) Most GPS watches are big, chunky and expensive. The RunX20 checks none of those boxes. The case is one of the smallest we’ve seen on a watch that can track speed, distance and calories burned. The battery lasts six hours in GPS mode and a lot longer in standby and sleep modes. It comes with several preloaded workout measures, like intervals and stopwatch set ups. And best of all, it is one of the most affordable GPS watches on the market.
Smith Pivlock Asana or Arena ($175; smithoptics.com) These bike inspired shades are so light, the lenses are so clear and the fit so comfortable, we sometimes forget we’re wearing them. Both the men’s Arena and women’s Asana come with three lens options - clear, rose and mirrored. A quick pivot of the arms and they separate from the lens, making switching between lenses fast and easy. There’s nothing casual about them, but they’re optimized for sweating and fit well with a bike helmet.
The North Face Apex Gym Duffel ($85; thenorthface.com) There’s plenty of room in this gym bag for everything you need for your next workout. The 45 total litres is divided into a large main cavern, accessed through the top zip, and a bunch of smaller organizing pockets. A separate vented area works great for stinky shoes and post-work out sweaty clothes.

ELLENSBURG—What do you do when you live in Seattle and quail season rolls around? Plan a trip, load up the rig and head out on a hunting binge. But for most of us who have obligations, the weeklong safari is a once-a-year thing at best. In between are the getaways, the weekend hunts, the quick overnighters, or the blink hunts, as my buddy pulled off recently, the one-day loop.
The closest east-west arterial to Seattle is Interstate 90. Long drives obviate the quick getaway, and while most hunters target the plentiful game management areas between Ellensburg and Yakima, there are birds to be had closer to home in the northern Kittitas Valley. A couple of hours driving from Pugetropolis and you’ll be hiking through sagebrush.
The huntable portions of the valley surround the town and settled areas around Ellensburg, and much of that land lies along the apron of scrub desert along the northern fringe. An arid, shrub-steppe ecology here separates the lushly irrigated crop acreage from the steep, timbered

slopes of the Wenatchee Mountains.The lay is a gently sloping, well-
drained land of sagebrush and scattered Russian thornberry, laced with shallow draws and dry creek beds, making for excellent quail habitat. The terrain is easy to hike, and with the exception of some of the denser thornberry copses, provides open shooting lanes and downed birds are easy to find, even if you don’t bring your dog.
There are no dedicated public hunting areas in the northern portion of the valley that I know of, so the trick, among the patchwork ownership grid of sections, is to find the public ones. More than anything else, the crux of a successful hunt in the Kittitas Valley is knowing where to go.

more. He’d found several coveys of birds in our old haunts, and with populations rebuilding after a hard winter freeze in 2008, we were eager to hunt. We left Everett at four and were in Cle Elum eating dinner at Mama Vallone’s Italian Steakhouse by seven, and that was with several stops along the way.
We booked a couple of small cabins at The Flying Horseshoe Ranch (flyinghorseshoeranch.com), near the Highway 970 junction with U.S. 97, south of Blewett Pass. An
authentic, working ranch, it reflects the western theme of the Kittitas. Not long after a hot breakfast there the next morning, we were slipping under a barbed-wire fence and fanning out to hunt.
The view from the foothills along the northern valley rim is stellar. Looking south, you see out over the valley and the turbines of the Kittitas Wind Farm toward the distant peaks of Mount Adams, Mount Rainier and Old Snowy.
To the north, a rifle shot distant,
the land rises steeply into ponderosa pine and conifers below distant Mission Peak.
I was hunting up the right flank of a shallow draw when I heard Steve shout from across the creek bed.
“Check it out!” He was pointing up ahead, and I
looked up to see the largest bull elk I’ve ever seen trundling off through the sagebrush.
“It looked like a chunk of the desert just got up and walked off.”

tones of the big animal resembled the dry stream bed and wintry flora where it lay up.
I also saw half a dozen muleys that day, and in winter we’ve seen colonies of snowy owls in the groves.
SPEAKING OF WINTER, if you’ve never hunted quail in the snow that often blankets this land in December and January, you’ve missed out. We like to come over and hunt the valley on snowshoes. It’s a different world then, when the wind howls across the open slope and rattles the naked branches. We truck along in our snowshoes, watching for tracks and staying alert for tight flushes.
That’s “tight flushes,” as in rattling the snow-covered sagebrush and birds busting out every which direction! We find them feeding in the lee of the thornberry and in the dry arroyos, while scattered copses and sagebrush igloos provide their roost.
Land in the valley is divided into 1-mile squares. Get a copy of the Department of Natural Resources’ public lands map for the area (Wenatchee quadrangle) and you’ll see a mix of brown, pink and white

Most of this sage-steppe is grazing land, even if it’s public. We watched three cowboys rounding up stray doggies on the square we were hunting. You’ll see barbed-wire fences surrounding all the land here; be easy with the wire when passing through. Plots are largely unsigned. Bring a GPS to confirm your location if you’re not good with maps. You will see neither an indication the land is open, nor No Trespassing signs. But the onus is on you to know where you are and what access is legal, what is not.
That said, you will find many hours of exploring and hunting available to you in the Kittitas, and on very short order! We’ve found birds everywhere we’ve gone, and you should too.

WHAT: Green was one of the key colors of the season and combining it with
a neutral like brown is a no-brainer. A more sophisticated evolution of the cam-
ouflage trend popular for many seasons, green and tortoise pairings clearly have
their roots in military fashion and evoke the feeling of woodsy hunting lodges.
For fall and beyond, eyewear designers have latched on to the increased wear-
ability this combo provides over trendier camo and are using the two in eyewear
styles that run the gamut of men, women, sun and ophthalmic.
WEAR: (Left to Right) Über masculine is the name of the game for the Sean
John SJ2067 frames from Marchon thanks to its matte finish and combination of
a hunter green front and endtips with a tortoise temple. With a really modern
take on a classic pairing, the Lowdown XL sunglasses from Smith couple a tort
frame with mirrored green lenses. Ladies love the combo too and it’s all in the

WHY: Tortoiseshell glasses are a staple. Anyone who wears eyewear should
have at least one pair in their frame wardrobe. But how do you update a clas-
sic? By pairing it with another classic, of course. Aside from being ridiculously
easy to wear regardless of your style, greens are a great way to freshen up and
polish fall and winter wardrobes, while tort remains one of the easiest and most
flattering materials to wear on the face. Next time a customer is looking for an
easy but timeless update, point them to your tort/green combos and watch them
race to the cash register.
