October 2 - November 8, 2014
Welcome to the 28th annual International Open Exhibition of “Pastels USA”. The Pastel Society of the West Coast is proud to present exceptional pastel works of art from artists throughout the United States. I thank the many talented artists who have participated in our exhibit. I would like to extend our appreciation to the Art Center Morro Bay staff for inviting us to present our show at their wonderful venue. I would also like to thank our generous donors and sponsors for their continued support of our Society and our artists. They have made “Pastels USA” the success it is today. This year we were fortunate to have three jurors of selection from a variety of locations who had the difficult task of selecting the accepted paintings from a large number of excellent entries. Thank you for your conscientious effort in this difficult process. Our jurors of selection were Barbara Courtney Jaenicke, from Atlanta, Georgia, Christine Swann from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and Steve Memering from Sacramento, California. A special thank you goes to our awards judge, Clark Mitchell, for selecting those paintings in the exhibit that were deserving of extra recognition. Mr. Mitchell lives in Northern California and is a well known artist and workshop instructor. Thank you Jerry Boyd, our Show Chair for this event. Jerry spends much time and effort working with details and artists and their entries. I know the artists who enter this exhibit are most appreciative of the care and dedication he brings to the task of Show Chair. As the Exhibition Chair, I am grateful to the support of the board members: Beverly Field, Willo Balfrey, Russell Frank, David Kalbach, Marie Gonzales,Susan Goodmundson, and Margot Schulzke, our founder. These people form a wonderful group that makes this exhibit such a success. Not mentioned above are two essential board members whom I rely upon to make “Pastels USA” the impressive event that it is. Linda Roemisch, our Ways and Means Chair, who makes our awards possible through the essential contacts with our sponsors. Maria Sylvester, our Publications Designer, does the design for our prospectus, our call for entries and most importantly she is the designer of this wonderful catalog. Thank you all who gave your time and expertise to make this exhibit possible. Sincerely Tina Moore, President & Awards Chair
Within moments of entering the Morro Bay Art Center, I was stealing glances around the two rooms where this year’s Pastels U.S.A.was hanging to get a feel for what had been accepted.
My first impression was one of awe. Once again I have to marvel at the broad range of talent, the possibilities of the medium, the diversity of stroke and texture that this show exemplifies. Can it be possible that pastelists are getting noticeably more talented year by year?
My task was far from easy: to choose from all the evocative entries, 31 particularly stellar paintings, and then to rank them. I’m drawn to this small gem, soft and almost monochromatic. Oh, but here, this big, brassy, loose and gestural handling of the medium. How about this tour de force of precise draftsmanship, and almost photo realistic presentation? And each with a different and compelling story to tell.
Thank you to the Pastel Society of the West Coast for continuing to champion the works of artists who have chosen this wonderful medium to express their ideas. I’m honored to have been asked to judge the show.

Statement
Pastel is not colored chalk. Pastel is pure pigment– the same pigment used in making all fine art paints. It is the most permanent of all media when applied to a perma-nent ground and properly framed. There is no oil to cause darkening or cracking, nor other substance or medium to cause fading or blistering. Pastels from the 16th Century exist today, as fresh and alive as the day they were painted! The following is a statement from the Pastel Society of America in New York: Pastel does not refer to pale colors, as the word is commonly used in cosmetic and fashion terminology. The name Pastel comes from the French word “pastische” because the pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste, with a small amount of gum binder, and then rolled into sticks. The infinite variety of colors in the Pastel palette range from soft and subtle to bold and brilliant. An artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper, sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel painting; leaving much of the ground exposed produces a Pastel sketch. Techniques vary with individual artists. Pastel can be blended or used with visible strokes. The medium is favored by many artists because it allows a spontaneous approach. There is no drying time, and no allowances to be made for a change in color due to drying. Historically, Pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Its invention is attributed to the German painter Johann Thiele. A Venetian woman artist, Rosalba Carriera was the first to make consistent use of Pastel. Chardin did portraits with an open stroke, while LaTour preferred the blended finish. Thereafter a galaxy of famous artists...Watteau, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler, Thomas Wilmer Dewing,William Merritt Chase... just to list the more familiar names, used Pastel as finished work rather than preliminary sketches. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of Pastel, and its champion. His protege, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and Pastel to her friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. In 1983, Sotheby Parke Bernet sold at auction two Degas Pastels for more than $3,000,000 each. Both Pastels were painted about 1880. Today, Pastel paintings have the stature of oil and watercolor as a major fine art medium Many of our most renowned living artists have distinguished themselves in Pastel, and enriched the art world with this beautiful medium.
As with any fine work of art or fine furniture, it is advised not to place a Pastel painting in direct sunlight. When under glass, the sun’s heat can create humidity which could cause moisture damage to develop. Whenever transported or not in a hanging position a Pastel painting should always be placed face up.

CLARK MITCHELL received a bachelor’s degree in art from Colorado College and continued his studies at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Mitchell has been designated a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. He has received numerous awards in local as well as national competitions and has works included in collections internationally. In 2005, Mitchell won Best of Show award at the Laguna Plein Air Invitational; and in 2011, likewise won Best of Show in the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. He was the cover artist for American Artist’s March 1993 issue. He was chosen as poster artist for the Sedona Plein Air Festival for 2008. In 2009, his painting was on the cover of Southwest Art’s annual landscape issue. In 2011, Mitchell’s painting was on the cover of The Pastel Journal’s June issue. Mitchell and his partner have lived in the beautiful Sonoma County wine country for over 30 years. He teaches workshops and travels throughout California as well as across the country looking for ever greater challenges as well as inspiration.
BARBARA COURTNEY JAENICKE was raised in New Jersey. She spent a little over a decade of her early career in advertising as an art director, then later worked in marketing communications in the corporate world. In 2002, she was able to turn her focus to her fine art career, painting landscapes and still life in pastel and oil. Barbara is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a member of the IAPS Master Circle, a Member of Excellence in the Southeastern Pastel Society, and a member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and American Women Artists. Barbara currently lives in Roswell, GA with her husband and son. She teaches workshops throughout the US and locally in the Atlanta area.
CHRISTINE SWANN is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and an award-winning artist on the regional, national and international level. She has just won a 2nd Place Award in the Pastel 100 which can be seen in the April 2014 issue of the Pastel Journal which publishes the top 100 pastel paintings of the year, chosen from over 3,000 entries.. She has also won two Honorable Mentions in the Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 Competitions in 2012 and 2013. Christine has also won a Gold Medal at the 2013 IAPS International Exhibition, and the PSA Founders Award 2013 A top ten finalist in the Inter-national Artist Magazine’s “People and Figures” competition, she was also published in the book, “How Did They Do That? - 100 Ways To Paint People and Figures”.
STEVE MEMERING received his education at California State University Sacramento, UC Berkeley and Carnegie-Mellon. He has had a long career as a teacher and artist. Today, he divides his time be-tween painting daily, as well as working full-time as a middle school art teacher. He also teaches adult painting workshops both here and abroad. For years, Steve had developed a reputation as an accom-plished watercolor artist. However in later years he has found that oil and acrylic gave him the freedom he needed to re- evaluate and explore his ideas along the way. He now works predominantly in oil on canvas. Sacramento subjects are a major theme in Steve’s current work with a dramatic play of light and dark which has become a persistent theme in his work along with bold, emotion-based color schemes.

The Pastel Society of the West Coast was founded in 1985 by a handful of dedicated artists from Northern California who had a vision to promote the historic pastel medium. The first Pastels USA National Open Competition was held in 1987. Based in the Sacramento region of California, PSWC has become the second largest pastel society in the United States, with members coast to coast. Each year Pastels USA, our International Open Show attracts over 500 entries. They come from all over North America and as far away as Africa, Turkey and Europe. Awards given amount to over $11,000 each year. Jurors for this prestigious show include artists of the stature of Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Bob Gerbracht, Doug Dawson, Sally Strand, Duane Wakeham, Margot Schulzke, Richard McKinley Alan Flattmann, and Lorenzo Chavez. The exhibition draws over a thousand art patrons each year. PSWC is honored to be at Art Center Morro Bay in Morro Bay, CA this year. Past venues for Pastels USA include the Art Museum of Los Gatos, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, CA, and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA. Because of PSWC’s reputation, some of the best pastelists in the country are signature members. Signature Status is awarded for acceptance into three Pastels USA Exhibitions or two Pastels USA Exhibits and one award in the PSWC Membership Show. The Distinguished Pastellist rank is awarded to members who receive awards in three Open Shows in a five year period. The Pastel LaureateTM Hall of Fame designation for lifetime achievement in the medium has been awarded thus far to Albert Handell, Daniel Greene, Bob Gerbracht, Margot Schulzke, Marbo Barnard, Duane Wakeham, and Richard McKinley, The current PSWC Board of Directors is dedicated to continuing the momentum started 28 years ago. Besides sponsoring two exhibitions a year, The Pastel Society of the West Coast holds two membership meetings a year featuring demonstrations by accom-plished pastelists. We publish a newsletter three times a year providing the latest informa-tion on pastel technique, exhibition opportunities and member accomplishments. PSWC also sponsors a scholarship competition each year for high school graduates who will be majoring in art. Given the strong leadership PSWC has enjoyed in its first twenty eight years, we are confident that this society will be around for many years to come. Membership in The Pastel Society of the West Coast is open to all artists working in the historic pastel medium. Information about PSWC including how to become a member can be found on our web site, www.pswc.ws
