Greetings from all of us at Certified Angus Beef LLC,My, oh my, has the cattle industry changed in the past four or five years! I recently put the timeline in perspective for a group of college students, but it strikes me how profound the effects will be and the need to keep ahead of that curve. Most people start the conversation with prices and costs, but I would argue we should start by talking about genetic progress. The ability of these cattle to grow and grade while improving cow functional efficiency is just amazing. What’s also impressive is how these superior genetics — like those supplied in this Select Sires AI directory — are now being rewarded with serious dollar premiums. Look at how dramatically those premiums have grown in 15 years on one leading grid (see Table 1). Those are still averages so, yes, $150 to $200/head premiums above the base are available in the market today.

Why is this occurring? Data in Table 2 derived by Kansas State University’s Dr. Ted Schroeder and Lance Zimmerman (now a Cattle-Fax analyst) show that demand for quality (Prime and Premium Choice, like Certified Angus Beef ® [CAB®]) has outpaced the demand for Low Choice and greatly outpaced the demand for Select. That’s why, in spite of declining cow numbers, our brand sales grew 54 million pounds (6.7%) to a seventh consecutive record high 865 million pounds. This didn’t happen in spite of record high beef prices, but because of it. Yes, consumers are sending a strong message as to what they want to buy. So, as cattlemen, what do you focus on to take advantage of these market signals? Well, first do not weaken on your marbling focus – it comes in many

balanced packages through the bulls offered at Select Sires: just look for the Certified Angus Beef ® Targeting the Brand logo. Our most recent packing consist study (Table 3) shows that 28% of cattle that qualify for the CAB® brand barely made it, within 30 points of the Modest0 line. In shopping for bulls, that would compare one with a marbling EPD of .2 versus a .5, but remember the progeny carry only half of the sire genetics.Another great tool to use are the economic indexes like $B from the American Angus Association. These values rank the growth and grading potential of calves sired by the excellent Angus bulls listed in the Select Sires catalog. Soon, you will likely begin to see feeder calves priced by their sire’s $B value — that will bring premiums all way to the cow-calf producer. By Bill Bowman American Angus Association & Angus Genetics Inc. Genetic selection practices for beef cattle production have evolved tremendously over the last fifty-plus years. State and regional beef cattle improvement organizations, along

with national breed associations and other groups, began the promotion and accumulation of performance data in the seedstock industry to use these measurements for beef cattle breeding programs. Organizations like the Beef Improvement Federation were created early on, to provide a forum for discussion and sharing of principles in achieving genetic improvement.Since the early 1970s, national breed associations in this country have worked with scientists and universities to provide their clientele with selection tools utilizing the breed phenotypic databases. Continued expansion of the list of economically relevant traits provided by breeds has allowed producers to apply precision selection strategies to help characterize and select genetics that impact profit at all segments of a complex beef industry.Fast forward to the present. Genomic results are now being used as a way to enhance the accuracy and predict-ability of current selection tools. The use of this technology in the form of genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) allows the identification of superior genetics at an earlier age with greater confidence. In some cases, genomic technology also permits selection in suites of traits that are difficult or very expensive to gather phenotypes.The promise of more widespread application of genomics in our industry has led many to surmise that a producer would eventually be able to take a DNA sample on a newborn calf, and immediately determine the genetic merit, or breeding value, of that animal for his program. Breeders sometimes ask if it is no longer necessary to collect data at the ranch (e.g., weaning weights, ultrasound scan data, carcass measures). This thought process created the discussion that the seedstock producer using the technology would no longer need to con-tinue the weighing and measuring of their cattle. In reality, this could not be further from the truth. The phenotypic measurements are used as the basis for train-ing the genomic tools in the initial development of molecular predictions. Genomics today do not completely describe the

variation in the traits of interest; thus, the results are used as indicator traits in the national cattle evaluations. The EPD calculations leverage the complete pedigree information, the performance data on all animals measured for a trait in proper contemporary groups, as well as the genomic data.More importantly, the phenotypic measures collected by breeders will continue to be an important component in the improvement of genomic panels, sometimes called re-training

or recalibration, and the refinement of this technology over time. Plus, the additional measurements continue to drive the EPD calculations by building upon the established phenotypic database.Thankfully, the industry has dedicated breeders committed to collect meaningful performance data to continue adding to our strong foundation of records. As an example, the American Angus As-

sociation database in 1963 had roughly 9,300 weaning weights after a few years of data collection. In 2013, that number grew to some 8.5 million weaning weights. In today’s space, another million records are added approximately every three years. This depicts a valuable resource that has contributed to enormous improvement in the genetic trend for Angus cattle. These weaning weights, running in a multi-trait growth model, allow the most accurate characterization of weight and maternal traits in our grasp today. The actual birth weights (yes, those taken with scales and not a tape measure) serve as an indicator trait for calving ease EPDs that the industry relies on to improve chances of unassisted births in first-calf heifers. As previously stated, the genomic measures rely on these phenotypic-driven data.Select Sires has continued their tradition of widely sampling young sires to generate actual phenotypic data for the relevant traits each and every year. progeny-proven sires with accuracy and reliability providing low-risk solutions for genetic selection. The laundry list of traits that stem from accurate weights and measures to contribute information in a comprehensive cattle production system continues to grow. Cow weights and body condition scores are essential to monitoring mature size and matching a cow to her environment. Heifer breeding and pregnancy data help to establish the genetic differences that can impact fertility and reproduction. Yearling scrotal measures contribute to the scrotal EPDs. Necessity traits like docility can be evaluated because of the temperament scores collected.Feed consumption has long been recognized as one of the most important factors in determining profitability of beef cattle production. Many resources have gone into this research area, and progressive producers have invested in equipment to measure individual feed intake to identify ge-netic differences associated with efficiency. Genetic selection tools have been limited for efficiency traits in the past, but the accumulation of this important phenotypic data has been folded into selection tools that help to better characterize postweaning efficiency.

There has been an increased awareness in the last few years for the need to collect actual harvest data. That response has been driven by a better understanding the genetic evaluation model that produces carcass EPDs. As an example, the American Angus Association now uses over 101,000 actual carcass measurements on sire-identified cattle as the foundation of the carcass EPD system. Also, there are over 1.5 million ultra-sound scans collected on yearling bulls and heifers included in the evalua-tion as an indicator trait to help predict carcass merit. With the advent of genomics, now there are nearly 80,000 genomic records included in the Angus carcass evaluation as an indicator trait for carcass genetics. Those sources of data combined weekly generate about 2.5 million carcass EPDs. Using reliable carcass selection tools has driven profitable production in an industry where a consistent, high-quality product generates unmatched premiums.

In conclusion, the use of GE-EPDs and selection indexes provide producers more confi-dence in the genetic inputs going into their operation’s breeding program. Incorporation of the new and improved technology will continue to evolve and be used to further enhance these selection opportunities. How-ever, the traditional performance measures evaluated in a proper contemporary group are needed more than ever to further refine these tools in the future. So, don’t sell the scales yet.

By Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic ResourcesAs a profit driven producer you’ve made the logical decision to use the added value of crossbreeding. It is crucial now that you make informed choices to get the most out of your ge-netic options. There is more flexibility and more proven options using SimGenetics than in most

breeds, but generating value and avoiding risk are high on almost everyone’s list of priorities. Plenty of mistakes were made in the past incorporating marginal Continental and British genetics into the US beef business. With today’s updated genetics, opportuni-ties for AI and improved selection tools, there is absolutely no reason to revisit the challenges of the past or settle for average value. Producers select genetics for lots of purposes, but without question, EPDs are the best tools available to increase confidence in selection and move profit forward. Below are some reliable “rules of thumb” for EPD parameters that should be helpful for navigating your successful use of SimGenetics. Calving Ease EPD – This is absolutely your best decision making tool for avoiding risk at calving. Remember Birth Weight EPD is already included in CE EPD along with all calving ease scores reported. For commercial virgin heifers +15 CE EPD is the absolute minimum I would consider using. To sleep all night on large groups of commercial heifers, push that figure up into the high teens or low twenties and your results should be as good as any Angus bull you’ve used. Breed of heifer, region of the country, calving season and labor at calving too are always factors to consider. With purebred Continental or SimAngus seedstock heifers, that recommendation could be relaxed somewhat to +12 or higher because of the extra maternal calving ease built into these females. For mature cows Calving Ease EPD is a much lower concern. As a commercial producer however, there is still no reason to take unnecessary risks particularly if you have reduced the maternal calving ease capabilities of your cow herd by using generations of straight British genetics. Personally, as someone who purchases lots of commercial cow bulls, I prefer bulls in the high single digits for direct calving ease or higher (+8 or more). They work at calving with very little risk for mature cows and usually generate more performance than extreme calving ease bulls. Weaning and Yearling Weight EPD – Both short and long term goals are important when you make deci-sions regarding growth traits. Short term, everyone loves more weaning weight and your feeder calf customers appreciate greater poten-tial for gain in the feedlot. Long term, extremely high growth cattle that aren’t selected for moderation of mature size can lead to larger than desired cows years down the road. It is important to realize too that according to the most recent MARC data, a mature Angus cow and a mature Simmental cow are now the same size. Average Simmental and SimAngus bulls (around +60 WW EPD and +90 YW EPD) sire substantial growth. Bulls with +80 WW EPD and +120 YW EPD will add big time improvement in performance. Again understanding your marketing goals and long term needs are keys to making smart decisions.Milk – Simmental is a high milk breed so average (around +23 MM EPD) or even somewhat below average Milk EPD is still plenty of milk for most situations. For those desiring to increase milk in their commercial herds, chose bulls above +30. Remem-ber that by crossbreeding you are already getting a big boost in milk production because of the effects of heterosis. Personally, I would be leery of selecting for extreme growth and milk in com-bination. Seems like not much good came from that in the past.

Choosing the Best SimGeneticsCarcass EPDs – In America we eat the cattle. That is the bottom line for all of us and our consumer demand ultimately drives almost all non-farm dollar infusion into the beef industry. Keeping that in mind, improvement in marbling, tenderness and cutabilty need to be priorities almost every time we make genetic decisions. High marbling Continental genetics like the ones that can be found in selected populations of Simmental and SimAngus cattle provide substantially more marbling than most all of their Continental competitors and provide comparable marbling genetics to even above average British cattle. Selecting Marbling EPD in the top 20% (+.2) of the breed should result in 75% - 85% Choice carcasses when used on average British based cows. SimAngus sires with Marbling EPD in the top 20% (+.46) or higher should do substantially better than that on well managed cattle. The best news of all is that today’s SimAngus bulls, highly selected for end product value (roughly +.8 MB EPD, +.8 REA EPD and or +90 Terminal Index or higher) can generate a com-bination of Quality and Yield Grade nearly unrivaled in today’s beef industry. It is a good idea to avoid significantly below aver-age marbling Simmental and SimAngus bulls if Quality Grade is important to you as a producer, because the resulting levels of Choice and Premium Choice carcasses may be disappointing. As a compliment to marbling, Simmental is one of the only breeds that offer a stand-alone EPD for improving tenderness. Few are paid directly for tenderness, but using bulls that sire tough beef seems illogical for the future. Choosing sires in the top 25% of the database for Shear Force EPD just makes good long term sense. Almost all SimAngus and Simmental sires will add ribeye area, leanness and cutability to British genetics. While the changes may not seem extreme to most, expect average purebred Simmental sires to add 1 full square inch of ribeye to average British based cows and take off .1 inches of back fat from crossbred steers fed next to straightbred steers. The resulting one half USDA Yield Grade improvement (i.e. 3.3 to 2.8) will all but put an end to Yield Grade 4’s and the subsequent increase in gain efficiency will positively affect cost of production. Not surprisingly you can expect approximately ½ as much change in YG when using average SimAngus sires and producing ¼ Sim, ¾ British cattle. All Around Profit (API EPD) – Selection for profit not only sounds like a good idea, but research shows it works! The All Purpose Index EPD is designed to move profit forward and help you avoid pitfalls in selection. Don’t misunderstand, it certainly is not without limitations and may not get everyone to the goals they have individually, but API is a nice tool to sort the wheat from the chaff. The most important factors effecting API EPD are stayabilty, direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, mature cow maintenance, and marbling. With that in mind, max-imum growth may not be attained by selecting for API, but most of the other traits that are crucial for avoiding risk and addressing long term success are in there. Chose cattle with API values in the top 25% of the breed to avoid problems and drive profit forward. Then, among those higher indexing sires, select the ones that give you the other value pieces your operation demands.Terminal Profit (TI EPD) – If you are among those who might use SimGenetics for the value they deliver as a combination of growth, efficiency marbling and cutability, Terminal Index EPD shows the way.
