3 ANSWERS FROM THE SOURCE

4 GIVE THE GIFT

6 DON'T LET THE WINTER GET IN THE WAY 7 MAXIMIZE YOUR SLEEP

12 HEALTHY HOLIDAY RECIPES

1. I'm pregnant, is it safe to take a detox supplement? Dr.Greg- We don’t recommend the use of supplements

in pregnant or nursing mothers because supplements are not tested for safety in this population. If you’re considering starting a family soon, we recommend both mom and dad do a detox protocol 4-6 months prior to trying to conceive.

2. When I detox, why do I get a rash on different areas of my body?

GL- It’s very common for toxins leaving the body, to exit in many different ways. All too often we think that the only way that a toxin will leave the body is through urination or something of that nature. However, skin is actually one of our major organs of detoxification; it not only absorbs everything we expose it to, it also releases those toxins through multiple methods including sweating.

3. I'm not currently taking any supplements. Where do I start? GL- Due to our environment right now, we have to work

really hard to get nutrients into our body because our food chain is so depleted of nutrients.

There are certain basic necessities: First, find a very good supplemental source of essential

nutrients, like Maximized Living's Whey Protein.

Secondly, Maximized Living's Max Greens are a very good source of 34 organic and living super foods.

Thirdly, a good multi vitamin is always a smart choice without fully understanding all the nutrients that are missing from your daily food sources.

4. How do I do the Advanced Plan through the holiday season?

GL - I have always believed that doing something moderately well is better than not at all. All too often, it is scary to try to eat perfectly throughout the holidays so we end up bailing and justifying our decision by starting a New Year’s resolution. My suggestion is to take it one day at a time, do your best each day and don’t beat yourself up if you have a bad day or two. Get back on the horse and have the next day be a good one!

5. Holiday foods that I can eat? GL- If you’re at a holiday party, focus on fresh vegetables

and cheese rather than sweets. Bring along a Maximized Living dessert like No-Guilt Chocolate Chip Cookies so that, if you must indulge, you’ll enjoy a treat that keeps you on track. Most importantly, plan ahead. If you know you’ll be out for extended periods of time pack healthy snacks that fit your plan: homemade cinnamon roasted almonds or pecans, nut butter and veggie sticks or a smoothie. For more inspiration, check out the recipes we’ve included in this issue of MaximizedLiving Magazine.

6. How do I avoid sugar during the holidays? GL- For those that want to go cold turkey, I’ll be praying

for you. Typically it is really hard over the holidays to avoid all sugars. My suggestion would be make the holidays a fun cooking time and make as many dessert recipes out of our Maximized Living Nutrition Plans as you can. Our recipes are sugar-free and grain-free. We replace sugar with stevia or xylitol. You are winning the war one battle at a time. If you could cut your sugar intake through desserts by 50% this holiday, you are a superstar! If you can do 60%... Congratulations!

Wealth, Not Poverty. Peace, Not StressHopefully you are not currently working with a “Poverty manager.” Ideally, you are working with a Wealth Manager who is helping you to build your net worth and not deal with your poverty. By appropriately managing your finances, you don’t set goals to avoid poverty, you set goals to build a financially secure future.

It is the same with stress. You do not manage your stress, you build and manage your peace.

Peace is not something you find when your latest crisis is over. What usually follows stress, of course, is the next stress. Like money (or health), peace is not discovered like some pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it is created.

Creating peace does not begin by changing everyone and all the situations that surround you. Changing locations, jobs, or spouses is typically not the answer. While the grass always seems greener (more peaceful) in someone else’s yard, occupation, or relationship, once you get over there, over there becomes over here again.

As the adage says, “Wherever you go, there you are.“ Start with yourself. If you want to see your environment and the people around you change, the best way for that to happen is for you to change first.

This is actually great news! By comparison, the easiest thing in the world to change is you. People can be tough to change, and family, jobs, and situations may even be impossible to change. But you can change right here, right now. Working on you is wealth and health management, not poverty and disease management. It is peace management, not stress management.

Foundation

We are excited to announce,“The Maximized Living Ray of Hope Salad Bar!” The first week we served over 6,700 Essential 3 Salads to the The Dream Center Food Chapel for HOPE!

Special thanks to Dr. Patrick Ray for his generous donation to the Maximized Living Foundation for this initiative.

As part of the continuing mission of the Maximized Living Foundation Health Center, we will be providing extensive support to help people maximize Essential

#3 with an all-inclusive nutritional fruit and salad bar for all people who participate in The Dream Center Food Chapel for HOPE!

The Dream Center Food Chapel provides hope and a hot meal to more than 36,000 people monthly and we are their primary sponsors! Now, with The Maximized Living Ray of Hope Salad Bar, many people are getting real nutrients for the first time in their life.

The people that we will be serving are homeless men, women and families and residents of the Dream Center programs. There will be literally hundreds of interns, volunteers, urban missionaries and college students in our Leadership Program who will be partnering with us in this worthy cause.

The Dream Center believes food is one vehicle to show God’s love. Just before they eat their delicious hot meal made with loving care, our guests hear an uplifting chapel service in an environment that is very comfortable and welcoming for everyone.

Much more than nutritious food and a positive message, this is really about changing lives! • For many of our elderly and disabled guests, a hot

meal served in love can be just what it takes to make life seem worth living.

• Children become all smiles, as they finally are able to eat enough food to fill their bellies.

• Parents are relieved and specifically, those who are unable to find work, feel the burden temporarily lifted off of their shoulders that they are unable to provide for their families.

• For men and women who have been homeless and addicted for years, they often get a glimpse of hope that life can be different.

• For everyone, the meal is a time to connect with others, build relationships and to consider how the message of hope they just heard can apply to their lives.

Many who come for our Food Chapel often later enroll in our Discipleship Programs.

It is the goal of the foundation to introduce nutritional foods and educate the people in the 5 Essentials.

Give the Gift... of Chiropractic this Year!

As Christmas bells start to ring and the smell of pine wreaths fills the air, you’re probably thinking about what to get your loved-ones for the holidays this year. You can always send Aunt Millie that box of chocolates that she loves, but wouldn’t you rather bless her with something that will PROMOTE health, instead of taking it away?

Arguably, the best gift that you can purchase for someone this year is the gift of chiropractic!

THE BACK PAIN EPIDEMICIf you don’t think your loved-ones need chiropractic think twice. According to the American Chiropractic Association, back pain is:

1. The #1 cause of disability globally2. The #1 reason people miss work 3. The #2 most common reason for doctor’s visit 4. Experienced by 80% of the population at some point

in their lives5. Experienced by 50% of all working Americans

Truth is, back pain is a significant issue for most people today and chiropractic is the safest, most effective way to help! In fact, the American Medical Association recommends that people utilize chiropractic care first before resorting to surgery.

For patients with herniated discs, the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics recently published a clinical trial showing how chiropractic adjustments outperformed lumbar nerve root injections by nearly 15% via self-reported pain level and increased global perception of improvement

MORE THAN JUST A PAIN REMEDYBut don’t just think that chiropractic is just for helping people with back pain! Clinical research has proven that gentle, specific adjustments are extremely effective at helping people in a wide variety of ways. Here are just a few examples:• Normalizing blood pressure • Enhancing immune response • Improving heart rate variability • Treating duodenal ulcers • Decreasing muscle tension • Overall increased bodily function • Dysmenorrhea (painful menses)

It is also critical to keep in mind that chiropractic care is safe and effective for people of all ages! According to the research, there are dozens of case studies describing how kids can benefit greatly from regular chiropractic adjustments:

• Acid reflux• ADD/ADHD• Autism• Bedwetting• Colic• Developmental delays• Headaches• Multiple sclerosis• Otitis media (ear infections)• Scoliosis• Sleep issues• Torticollis (wry neck)

SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO GET THIS YEAR?Compared to the extreme cost of drugs and surgery for many of these conditions, research has shown that they can oftentimes be easily managed by lifestyle changes and regular chiropractic check-ups. And the best part of it all is that if you purchase your loved ones the gift of chiropractic this holiday season, they will enjoy health and continued wellness all year round. Talk to your Maximized Living doctor or staff today to find out how you can give someone the BEST gift that they’ll ever receive! Talk to your Maximized

Living doctor about Vitamin

D3 Complex TODAY!

* These statements have not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Trouble with sleep can be the primary cause for many chronic health issues. 50-70 million Americans have difficulties with sleep nightly. Research has shown

definitively that lack of sleep is linked to decreased immunity, ADD/ADHD, depression, decreased memory, high blood pressure, decreased insulin sensitivity, weight gain, diabetes, and even cancer. Prescription medications are common treatments and have at least 203 side effects including depression, suicide and more insomnia. In fact, recent research shows that taking only 18 individual pills in an entire year has been associated with a 460% increase in death within 2.5 years. Even though difficulties with sleep are common, solutions can be quite simple.

LIGHTLight is one of the most important external factors that affect your sleep. Having even low levels of light in your bedroom decreases sleep quality by keeping your brain slightly engaged. This is why night lights for kids not only create tired youngsters but decreases immunity. Exposure to natural light during the day influences the timing of our internal clock. This sun exposure drastically improves sleep quality which in turn improves healing and metabolic processes. Lack of sun exposure daily decreases the quantity of several hormones your body creates, including melatonin, which according to the British Cancer Journal in 2004 increases your risk of cancer. So your room should be as dark as possible and you should get plenty of sunlight each day.

EXERCISENot only did participants in studies state they felt better overall with regular exercise, they also found that getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous exercise improved sleep 65%. In a 7-year study of 7,022 middle-aged people, Finnish researchers found that women who reported sleep problems were more likely to experience a major weight gain. So, daily or regular exercise not only keeps you leaner and improves your sleep but may have you losing weight while you rest!

TIMINGWhen you sleep may be more important than how long you sleep. Staying up late is a major sleep enemy. This is because sleeping each hour between 10pm and 2am is worth up to 4 hours of sleep compared to each hour after 2am. This sleep timing difference is why staying up late on the weekends and sleeping in may cause you to not feel well rested even when you stay in bed longer total hours through the next morning. And this resetting of your internal clock sleeping at differing

times makes monday morning at 6am feel more like 4am. So, getting to bed at the same time and during earlier hours is another key!

SLEEP POSITIONThe endless debate is over! Sleeping on your back is best followed closely by sleeping on your side. Both should be supported so that your body and spine are aligned properly with the right bed or pillows. While sleeping on your back, your head should be resting on the same surface as the rest of your body. Even with specially shaped contour pillows that allow for a curve in your neck while sleeping on your back, if your head is raised even slightly off the bed it creates a head forward posture which is related to sleep apnea, many other health conditions, and destroys the joints and discs in your spine over time. Sleeping on your stomach creates the need to turn your head which over time causes your spine to develop abnormal curves putting pressure on your nerve system. So the best position is on your back with support under your neck or on your side with supportive bedding and pillows to maintain proper alignment.

NERVE SUPPLYThe most commonly overlooked solution to great sleep is your nerve system. Your spine being out of alignment creates pressure on your vital, sensitive spinal cord and nerve roots that not only create tossing and turning while you sleep but create dysfunction, increased sensitivity to pain, and disease over time according to Irvin Korr in 1979. Within weeks of correcting their spine and nerve system, patients have slept better, stopped using breathing devices at night and even stopped snoring. Your local Maximized Living doctor can be a great resource for you and your family to check, correct, and maintain this vital system.

So whether you are looking to lose weight, have more energy and focus, or shake your need for prescription meds, the solution may be as close to home as your own bedroom. Sleep well!

UNHEALTHY DRINKSThe drinks we’ll discuss here are harmful to your health, will send your insulin levels sky-rocketing, and put you at risk for serious diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. So why are we talking about them? I thought it important to touch on the toxic drinks that are readily available on commercial shelves across North America and magnify the sugars involved. Drinks like Rockstar or Redbull are a complete anomaly.

The energy provided comes from caffeine and sugar of course, and will cause adrenal fatigue, insulin imbalance, inflammation, and serious risk for disease. It’s safe to say that these products should be completely avoided, as they are poison to your body.

Other less aggressive unhealthy drinks, like store bought fruit juices, are also a culprit on the sugar list. Just because “fruit” is featured in the label, doesn’t mean this product is at all nutritious. In fact, commercial fruit juices contain many different types of sugars like glucose, fructose, and corn syrup. These juices should also be completely avoided. Instead, try lemon, raspberry or blueberry infused water with a hint of stevia... or, heaven forbid, drink water.Removing sugar from one’s diet certainly isn’t easy. The only way to really lick the sugar habit is cold turkey, so it can be a challenging first two weeks for many individuals. However, after you’ve surpassed those initial stages of detox, your body will feel better than ever and cravings will completely subside. Keep these hidden sources of sugar as a reference to understand where sugar might be hiding out and sabotaging your clean routine.

ABOUT THE AUTHORDr. B.J. Hardick is the co-author of the best-selling Maximized Living Nutrition Plans, used in natural health clinics worldwide, and is a contributing author of The Cancer Killers: The Cause is the Cure. His health centre in London, Ontario is one of the largest clinics of its kind. In Dr. Hardick’s seminars and care

for patients, he teaches and implements the principles of Maximized Living which he has championed his entire life. www.DrHardick.com.

Hide and Seek: The Top 4 Hidden Sources of Sugar

Countless clients of mine have raved about the ways in which their lives have completely transformed after having cut sugar from their diets. It’s a

simple switch, but removing sugar from one’s diet can save individuals from developing harmful diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and the list just goes on and on. Giving up the sweet stuff is a preventative measure for your health and the health of your loved ones, and it will make lasting, noticeable changes in your current health. Once you ditch sugar, you’ll quickly notice less digestive issues, more energy, less cravings, a healthier sleep cycle, a faster metabolism, weight stabilization, mood stabilization, and general health improvement. There’s so much to gain from losing the ingredient that sneaks its way into several processed items you’ll find in the aisles of your local grocery store.

Ridding your diet of sugar is the first step. You’ll notice endless benefits to the overall health of your body and mind, and it won’t take long for insulin levels to balance and cravings to come to a complete halt!

So that cold pressed green juice you just guzzled or the organic lemon grass dressing you’re using on salad tonight may contain high levels of fructose or low sugar sweeteners of which you weren’t even aware! Let’s discuss where you might be consuming sugars and how to remove them from your diet for good so that you can maintain that nutrient dense, maximized lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

CONDIMENTSOnce you’ve transformed to a nutrient dense, low to no sugar diet you will become educated that most store bought condiments are filled with sugars that are harmful to your body. Let’s run through a list of condiments of which we should be aware. Ketchup is killer on the list of high sugar products. This condiment is sweetened with many sugars like fructose, glucose, dextrose, or artificial sweeteners like saccharin. It can be easily replaced with organic or low sugar ketchup that is typically sweetened with natural fruit juice.

Other commonplace household condiments like mayonnaise are especially high in sugar. You can simply make this delicious dressing at home, which cuts out the sugars involved with the highly processed store

bought option. Perhaps you use simple salt and pepper on your meals for tasting. To the lay-person, this seems as elementary as it comes in terms of condiments. However, some salts actually contain sugars. This is shocking! Even stevia, which is a natural sweetener has been recently shown (in the case of some brands) to contain some sugars!

FRUITOf course fruits are generally a good substitute for highly processed, store bought snacks, especially amongst individuals who are looking to clean up unhealthy eating patterns. However, not all fruits are created equally. It’s important for individuals consuming a low to no sugar diet to understand the glycemic index in fruits. You see, certain fruits contain a high glycemic index while other fruits contain a low glycemic load. This is important because fruits like pineapple or mangoes, which have a high glycemic index, can deeply affect individuals with blood sugar issues.

These types of fruits are damaging to cell membranes and can spike insulin levels. Do these types of fruits cause obesity? Of course not. However, individuals looking to detox or looking to get rid of infections should avoid these fruits because of their glycemic index. Fruits like blueberries or raspberries, which contain a low glycemic load are a better option as they will keep insulin levels balanced and won’t damage cell membranes. Choose fruits with a low glycemic load and eat them earlier in the day to ensure balance in insulin levels and reduce your risk of inflammation.

For a review of the fruits allowed on the Maximized Living Nutrition Plans, check out my summaries of the Core and Advanced Plans.

HEALTHY DRINKS AND JUICEMarkets and health food stores cram their shelves with “healthy drinks” and new age juices that are appealing to the eye. However, these drinks contain just as much sugar as commercial store bought drinks. For example, the amount of cane or coconut sugar in some popular Kombucha drinks is enough to throw off insulin levels, which naturally leads to cravings. Other drinks like cold pressed juices or organic store bought juices also contain “natural” sugar like cane sugar or agave, which has the same affect to your body. High levels of “natural” sugars in healthy drinks like these have the same capability of spiking your insulin levels, so it’s best to avoid them all together. Instead, try lemon infused water, cucumber mint infused water, or if you’re really look for a treat try a refreshing drink sweetened with all natural stevia. Sparkling Raspberry Lemonade is always a hit!

AvoidingGMOs during the Holiday Season

There is no denying that food is a major component of holiday celebrations. From Thanksgiving through the New Year, we gather

with our nearest and dearest around the table to share company. Most of us enjoy turkey, pies baked with the fruits of the season and harvest vegetables.

Growing up I vividly recall the cans of cranberry jelly that often found their way home. While I was never one who enjoyed jellied cranberries, it was something that was always present on the holiday table. Now, when I think about what cranberries are and how far canned cranberry is from its original form, I realize that many of us are simply eating the essence of what real food is. Jellied cranberries are as much cranberry as a pumpkin pie is pumpkin.

The convenience of canned, processed and even frozen foods has not only taken us away from enjoying food in its truest forms, it also increases our exposure to chemicals, preservatives and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). The topic of GMOs has been more apparent in recent years and it leaves a lot of us asking, is my food safe?

WHAT ARE GMOs?GMOs are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. This crossbreeding is not natural and produces a crop that can withstand herbicide and/or produce an insecticide within the crop. More importantly, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Instead, a growing body of evidence is linking GMOs to health problems and irreparable environmental damage, while violating the rights of farmers’ and consumers’.

ARE GMOs SAFE?It can't be said with any certainty that GMOs are safe to consume. More than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and all of the countries in the European Union, impose restrictions or bans on the production and sales of GMOs. The only steps America has taken involve the approval of GMO based studies, funded by the very organizations that create these products and who stand to profit from their sale.

HEALTHY HOLIDAYSAvoiding GMOs is a critical part of eating well this holiday season. You can still enjoy all of your favorite holiday meals without worrying that the food you’re eating is poisoning you and your family. First, choose organic foods when possible. The use of GMOs is strictly prohibited in organic products. An organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds and organic livestock can’t be fed GMO feed like alfalfa or corn. Next, bake your own organic advanced plan desserts from scratch. While this might take up a little more of your time, it ensures you and your family are enjoying healthy treats that aren’t laden with sugar and other toxins. Lastly, look for the Non GMO Verified seal on products you purchase. This seal indicates every ingredient in the product you’re purchasing has been independently verified to not be genetically modified.

The holidays are centered on family, faith and food. Make smart choices for long term health this holiday season. For more information on Genetically Modified Organisms visit: www.nongmoproject.org.

Protein is the essential building block of your body. When consumed in the proper form, protein will help your body create muscle, build bone, speed up your ability to burn calories and even remove accumulated toxins from your system.

However, protein supplements that have been processed in high heat or derived from second-rate sources can actually bring more toxic substances into your body, acting more like a wrecking ball than a building block. Fortunately, not all protein supplements are created this way.

Perfect Protein is made from whey, the type of protein that is most readily absorbed by your body. Whey protein is derived from cattle. However, MaximizedLiving’s Perfect Protein comes from 100 percent grassfed cows that have never been treated with hormones, steroids or fed genetically modified food, so you get all the essential amino acids and none of the toxic chemicals. Best of all, our protein comes from 100% concentrate whey protein, which means it hasn’t beenchemically processed. It’s whey protein, the way nature intended it.

Unlike other whey protein powders, Perfect Protein has added vitamins and probiotics, and remains intact through our delicate, low-temperature processing.

And it’s naturally sweetened with stevia, so it contains no artificial flavors, additives or colors. Available in both chocolate and vanilla, Perfect Protein is a delicious snack that offers the compounds and nutrients you need to stay fit throughout the holiday season.

Talk to your doctor about the benefits of whey protein from 100% grass-fed cows TODAY!

½ Teaspoon dried sage

½ Teaspoon dried thyme

½ Teaspoon dried marjoram leaves

½ Teaspoon crushed rosemary

Directions

Preheat oven to 425⁰F. Rinse the turkey inside and out then pat dry, stuff (if desired), and truss. Cut a piece of

WHY GREEN(S) SHOULD BE YOUR 365-DAY-A-YEAR COLOR:1. Young cereal grass juices such as barley, alfalfa, oat, wheat

and kamut are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.

2. Sprouting is a term that refers to the process where you unlock the nutrient potential within a seed and is a great way to increase the digestibility of seeds, nuts and legumes while maintaining their raw nutrient density.

3. The enzymes found in all raw foods enhance the body's ability to digest and assimilate nutrients, while probiotics maximize the function of the digestive system.
