online learning theories and best practices, and the benefits of using educational technology in online nursing classrooms.

– Create a multimedia instructional component for your current or future online course.

• Workshop II: Social Learning Theory and Using Social Media to Enhance Learning– Synthesize and explain social learning theory, the nursing literature

regarding social presence and the influence of educational technology on social presence, satisfaction, and learning.

– Create a course plan for that incorporates a social-media enhanced virtual discussion and collaboration space.

• Workshop III: Transform Your Online Nursing Classroom– Synthesize theory, knowledge and skills relative to educational

technology and modify course lesson plans accordingly.– Create and present a final project that incorporates multimedia and

social learning components.


Online Science Labs Mastery Series• Workshop I: Research & Design

– Describe and discuss the 5E instructional model of science teaching.– Synthesize and discuss the science education literature regarding teaching

science labs online, including online learning theories and best practices, and the benefits of using educational technology to reach virtual students.

– Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of virtual versus hands-on "wet-labs" for teaching and learning in distance education.

• Workshop II: Teaching and Assessment Techniques– Summarize various approaches used by different scientific disciplines to

create a rigorous online laboratory course component. – Create a course plan that incorporates student-student, student-content, and

student-faculty interactions to enhance the online laboratory learning space.– Create a formative and summative assessment plan for an online science

laboratory.• Workshop III: Capstone Project

– Synthesize theory, knowledge, and skills relative to teaching a science laboratory online.

– Create and present a capstone project that culminates in the creation of a highly interactive online science lab exercise that incorporates student-student, student-content, and student-faculty learning.


Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping Mastery Series

• Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping I: Building Foundations– Analyze research related to spatial thinking and apply it to the educational

environment.– Explore how to embed key spatial thinking themes into your instruction,

including issues of scale, data quality, working with spatial data and maps, and developing the spatial thinking ‘habit of mind.’

• Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping II: Learning Key Skills– Apply foundations learned in the first workshop to thinking about real world

issues at a number of scales and across a number of themes.– Create, symbolize, save, and share web maps to understand how to use

geotechnologies to enhance teaching and learning through content, skills, and perspectives.

• Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping III: Solving Problems– Learn how to incorporate real time and field data into your instruction using

web mapping.– Use spatial and tabular data, tools in web mapping platforms, and the

spatial perspective to better understand real world issues in a deeper way and to solve problems.

– Create your own lesson using geotechnologies and create a plan for implementing it in the classroom.
