Time before food needs refrigerating

There are some marked differences in regards to the amount of time people believe food can be left out on the kitchen bench at normal room temperature before it needs refrigerating.

Seven in ten people (71%) believe homemade whole egg mayonnaise should be put in the fridge straight away. The results for cooked chicken dishes are broadly similar, with 62% saying these should be refrigerated straight away. However the results for rice are clearly different to the other two food types, with 42% believing this could be left out for two hours and a further 22% who think it can be left out for up to 6 hours or overnight, or that it doesn’t need refrigerating at all.

Men (30%) and younger people (32% among 18-34 year olds) are more likely to say it’s OK to leave boiled rice out on the bench for 6 hours or more.
