Welcome to the 2014/2015 Girl Scout Calendar of Events!

WOW! Time goes by when you are having fun, and I had a great year watching our wonderful girls enjoy learning, having fun and achieving their goals. I love to hear the giggles while they swim, or create an artwork masterpiece, and see the seriousness with which they engage in the STEAM programs. I had an opportunity to visit Camp El-O-Win this summer. So many great activities - the new bridge, the wonderful food and the smiling faces. I have had the opportunity to meet the 18 Gold Awardees and hear about their outstanding projects and look forward to all of the Girls’ projects this next year. They are changing the world.

Girls, again I challenge you to explore and question the world around you and strive

for the answers. I challenge you to develop good decision making skills that you can take with you on the life journey you have charted. I challenge you to set goals, develop a plan for achieving your goals, and believe in yourself. When the task looks insurmountable ask yourself, “Why not me?” Life is full of opportunities waiting for the right girl to find them. Be that girl!

I challenge staff and volunteers to be the best mentors possible by following the

Girl Scout Promise and Law, and to take our role model responsibilities seriously by taking brush up classes, becoming a trainer, nurturing a new Troop or serving on a Council Committee. I challenge all of us to go above and beyond to help and nurture girls as they explore the world of opportunities ahead of them. Let us all be an example of what we want our girls to be. Let us all continue to learn and grow so that we can help our girls explore and benefit from all that the world has to offer them. Let us all remember to be part of the solution!

Council Website with Calendar Get up to the minute information and register online for all of these opportunities at girlscoutsccs.org. The site features an online calendar which enables girls, families and Troops to search for events and workshops by date or by type of activity.

Forms and Resources Many Council forms are available online. To ensure use of the most recent version of each form, download forms as needed and discard previous versions. Most Council forms online are PDF (portable document format) files. PDF forms are “read-only” and must be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free plug-in) and printed.

In addition, forms are available in the Girl Scout Gold Mine Stores located in Fresno and Bakersfield or through your Service Unit Team.

Girl Scouts Give Back at Terry’s House

Terry’s House is located across from Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno. This hospital brings patients to downtown Fresno from a 15,000 square-mile region that spans nine counties. The most critically sick and injured can be hospitalized for weeks or months. Terry’s House offers rooms to those caring for loved ones at Community Regional Medical Centers. These families miss many things from home, like a home cooked meal. Some families bring their children who are not allowed to go into all areas of the hospital and long for something to keep them occupied. So what can Girl Scouts do? -Bring your troop and cook a family style meal for 40 people. Must have a leader with Outdoor Training present. -Make snack bags for families to take with them while waiting at the hospital. -Make basic care packages with toiletries, notebooks and playing cards. -Make a care package for a child with small games, snacks and coloring books. -Create coloring books from your troop for the children staying at Terry’s House. These are needs year round at Terry’s House. We would love to see a Girl Scout presence every month. Fall Product Program Information

Participating in the Council-sponsored fall product and cookie programs teaches girls the five essentials skills

of goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics, as well as provides

much needed financial support for Troops and the Council. The proceeds from these programs enable girls to

fund their Troop activities and community service projects and help to provide funds for upkeep of Council

properties, adult learning, and other Council-wide initiatives. In order to participate in money-earning activi-

ties, a girl must be a registered member of Girl Scouts and have a signed parent permission slip. Participation

in the Product Programs is voluntary and all age levels, including Daisies, may participate. Proceeds earned

Cookie Sale Program Information

It’s easy to see the Girl Scout Cookie Program is lots of fun for girls, but that’s just the beginning. The largest girl-led business in the country, the Cookie Program, helps girls develop five key business and leadership skills that last a lifetime: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. This year’s theme of “Lead the Change” encourages girls to make a difference! Troops can use their cookie money to lead Take Action Projects that have MORE IMPACT than ever before. Adult Recognitions and Annual Meeting

The 2015 Adult Recognition Ceremony and Annual Meeting will take place Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Tulare Ag Center in Tulare. Join us for a great day of shaping our Council and celebrating our volunteers! All GSCCS registered delegates have a vote at the Annual Meeting. During the meeting and lunch, GSCCS will honor outstanding volunteers with National and Council awards.

Everyone likes to feel appreciated for their volunteer service. Whether in the form of a simple thank-you for a small job well done or a formal recognition for years of faithful service in a key position of an organization, such acknowledgement is a signal to the recipient that she or he is noticed and appreciated—that she or he is RECOGNIZED.

For truly significant service, there is a formal adult recognition program in Girl Scouting. These Council and National awards recognize outstanding accomplishments that go well beyond what would be expected for the position held.

Five County Travel Patch Program Guidelines

To encourage girls and adults to visit other parts of our Council, we are continuing this special patch program. Girls can earn five patches between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015; each patch represents a county within our Council. These patches are included in the fee of Council-sponsored programs and girls earn them by attending the program. To earn her home county segment, a girl must attend two programs within her home county. To earn each of the other county segments, a girl must attend one program within that county. Girl trainings and Product Sale programs do NOT qualify for the patch. Participation in GSCCS family fun events (such as Girl Scout Nights at sports events) does qualify. Some Service Unit events may qualify if they are preapproved by the Program Department.

Council Patch Program

The Council’s Five County Patch Program is back by popular demand!!!!

Punch cards will be available at Council-sponsored programs. Girls must bring the card to all the events they attend. At the end of Council events, there will be a booth/table where you can get your card punched and/or receive your patch.

Girls that have already earned their Five County patch and wish to continue the program will have an option of receiving stars to add to their current patch.

Teen Mentoring Awards

Guiding others or teaching something you know makes you a mentor. Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors have many opportunities to help younger Girl Scouts by sharing their skills, passions, and experience. Girl Scouts who are Program Aides, Counselors-In-Training and Volunteers-In-Training can assist with day camp activities, Service Unit events, Troop meetings, Council programs and more!

Leader in Action (LiA) Girl Scout Cadettes There are three different awards to earn, one for each of the Journey series. LiA can be earned by assisting a Brownie group to complete any of the three Journeys. To earn the LiA, you will share your organizational skills, use one of your special talents, teach Brownies something important from their Journey, and reflect on your experience. How to Register for Events:

Option 1: Register Online

Visit our online calendar and registration system by going to www.girlscoutsccs.org and clicking on the Full Calendar under the Events & News tab. You can locate workshops, trainings or events by choosing the appropriate icon or browse by month. Once you’ve chosen the activity or event you wish to register for, click the icon and you will be directed to our online registration payment site. Complete the registration by selecting “Purchase Now”. Please include participant’s name and Troop number in the notes section. Pay online by using a credit card or debit card. You will receive an email confirmation for your registration. This is the preferred method for event registrations. It’s faster, easier for you, and it’s green.

Option 2: Register by Mail, Fax or In-Person

Complete an Individual Event Registration or Troop Event Registration form. Mail, fax or deliver forms to Program Registration at Girl Scouts of Central California South, 1377 W. Shaw Ave., Fresno, CA 93711. Fax (559) 291-5079. Forms can be downloaded from the Council website at www.girlscoutsccs.org and are available in the Gold Mine Stores. The forms may be duplicated as needed.

There is no limit to the number of programs for which you can register. Simply complete a separate registration form for each program. Individual girls or Troops are welcome as each program indicates.

Registrations cannot be taken over the phone.

Deadlines and Min/Max Requirements

Once registration begins, programs will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Listed under each program offering is a registration deadline date. Registration is open until the maximum number of participants is reached or the deadline date arrives, whichever occurs first. Programs may be cancelled if the stated minimum is not met by the deadline. All programs are subject to change or cancellation.

Siblings/Friends

Siblings and friends may not attend programs unless they are fully registered Girl Scouts who meet the age level requirements for the program or if the program is specified as a family event.

Program Fees

All fees (100%) are due at the time of registration. Your registration will not be processed if fees do not accompany the registration form. Unless otherwise specified, payments are made to Girl Scouts of Central California South and may be made in the form of cash, credit card, check, Cookie Dollars/Nut Bucks or Annual Program Pass. Online registrations must be paid with a credit or debit card. Please do not send cash through the mail.

Adult chaperones

When fees are listed per girl, adults do not have to pay for the event. When fees are listed per person, any individual attending the event must pay the fee.

Girl-Adult Ratio

Adult volunteers are needed at some programs to maintain the appropriate girl/adult ratio. If space is limited, once the girl/adult ratio has been met, no additional adult registrations will be accepted. The Leaders attending workshops and events must meet the girl/adult ratio. Leaders are also responsible for monitoring the Troop/group’s behavior and actions, carrying all required trip paperwork, and completion of training as defined in the Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Cancellations and Refunds

Events run rain or shine unless inclement weather would adversely affect the program. In those cases, participants will be notified of cancellation or rescheduling. If Girl Scouts of Central California South cancels the event for any reason, or cannot place participants in the event of their choice, Girl Scouts of Central California South will issue a refund for 100% of the registration fee. Leaders may substitute another registered Girl Scout. Refunds will be made as follows:

No refunds issued on pre-purchased tickets.

Refund requests must be made in writing prior to registration deadline.

No refunds will be made for registrants not attending the program.

Girl and adult membership registration is non-refundable.

Adult Learning Girl Scouts of Central California of South offers many adult learning opportunities. Learning and developing new skills and insights are all part of the Girl Scout program, and not just for girls! Knowledgeable and skilled volunteers have the ability to offer the highest quality programming for girls while staying safe and having fun at the same time. New Leader Orientation

Required prior to first Troop meeting, this face to face meeting with a Council representative (volunteer or staff member) focuses on your volunteer position, reviews Volunteer Essentials, Girl Scouts of Central California South’s Policy and Procedures and information for starting a troop. All adults serving in leadership positions in Troops must complete orientation prior to their first meeting with the girls. Contact the Manager of Volunteers at (800) 490-8653 ext. 130 for more information on scheduling Orientation. Cost: Free

Girl Scouting 101* (English or Spanish)

This course provides an overview to the Girl Scout organization, including Girl Scout pathways (various ways that girl and adult members participate), resources and support available to volunteers, the Girl Scout Mission, Promise and Law, the benefits to girls of participating in the Cookie program (builds financial literacy skills), some basic safety requirements, and an overview of the Girl Scout program for girls. Spend about 45-50 minutes learning online-whenever you can fit it into your day. Go to www.gslearning.org/girlscouting101 *Required of all volunteers. Cost: Free

Leadership Essentials (LE1)

This session will give adult volunteers who work directly with girls the tools to manage a group of girls while providing a safe experience, understand the Promise and the Law, plan a typical meeting and describe the importance of all of the components of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. This training is required for all new Leaders, co-Leaders and assistant Leaders within three (3) months of appointment. Volunteers MUST attend New Leader Orientation prior to attending this class. Cost: $5

Program Level Training (LE2)

Journey Training! This session provides information to help your girls develop leadership skills, and will teach you how to work with Journeys. This course includes an overview of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and teaches how to effectively partner with your girls to make their plans and goals a reality. You’ll also learn how to be able to see the impact you have on girls’ lives by thinking about outcomes. This training is required by all new Leaders, co-Leaders and assistant Leaders within six (6) months of appointment and current Leaders bridging to next age level. Cost: $5

First Aid / CPR Training (Level I)

This basic level is for the adult acting as the first aider for most troop activities (see Safety Activity Checkpoints) and is valid for two years through Medic First Aid. This training consists of hands-on, lecture and visual information on administering CPR and first aid to adults and children. Notes: Each Troop should have at least one adult Level I First-Aider. Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors cannot serve as First Aiders for a Troop. If you are a medical professional serving as a Level I First Aider for a Troop or Service Unit you are exempt from taking the course by showing proof of certification. If you have First Aid/CPR certification from another organization you must provide proof of certification and expiration. Cost: $20

Trip Planning

This class is required prior to taking your Troop on any overnight experience. Learn how to work with girls and adults to plan, carry out and evaluate day trips, overnight sleepovers at a home, school, church or hotel. This class is offered face to face or as a home study course and covers budgeting, safety requirements, emergency procedures, transportation, equipment, insurance and other essential information needed for overnight trips. Contact Michelle Loyd, Program Leadership Manager at [email protected] or (800) 490-8653 ext. 200 to request the home study course. Cost: $5 for face to face class, or no fee for home study course

Outdoor Training (Part A & Part B)

This training covers girl/adult partnership and progression in the outdoors, food preparation and safety basics, clothing and equipment, Leave No Trace techniques as they apply to outdoor activities and camping, and the many resources available to adults when planning outdoor activities with girls. You will learn about and practice budgeting, meal and equipment planning, outdoor cooking, equipment selection and set up, outdoor activity ideas, outdoor ceremonies, and troop government in an outdoor setting. This class consists of two parts: a pre-plan session (part A) where you will work with other participants to plan meals and equipment, and a full day of outdoor fun! Equipment lists and a map to the overnight session will be provided at the Part A session. Outdoor Training is mandatory for Troops taking an overnight outdoor trip and/or cooking outdoors with girls. Cost: $20

Extended Trip Planning

This is a required course for Leaders taking their Troops on trips over 72 hours and/or international trips. You will learn the requirements for extended trip travel, insurance, finances and forms. You’ll gain from the experience of seasoned Girl Scout travelers, and receive valuable tips on planning “big” trips with your girls. Event Planning

Are you planning events and activities for your Service Unit or Council? This class is required for volunteers running events where more than one Troop is participating. Participants will learn the logistics of planning, promoting, delivering and evaluating an event, as well as effective techniques for recruiting and working with a committee. It is STRONGLY recommended that more than one person from each Service Unit be trained. This course replaces Safety Management and Day Camp Director Training. Cost: $10
