Barrington School Committee Member Patrick A. Guida Chosen to Lead Review of NASBE Public Education Positions

For Immediate Release: February 24, 2015

Alexandria, Va. – Patrick “Buzz” Guida, chairman of Rhode Island’s Council on Elementary and Secondary Education, has been

appointed to chair a task force that will review and revise the Public Education Positions of the National Association of State Boards

of Education (NASBE). Guida served as president of NASBE in 2013.

In making the appointment, NASBE President Mary Lord noted that Guida has been a leader in helping the association develop its

policies over a number of years. “As a member of our Government Affairs Committee, a member of our national board of directors,

and then as our national president, Buzz helped shape policies that kept the focus of state boards of education on providing all

students with access to a high-quality education,” she said.

Guida has been a public servant to education for over 20 years. Guida played an active role in state and local school politics, serving

first on the Barrington School Committee, and later as president of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees (RIASC). He

joined Rhode Island’s Board of Regents in 2001 and was elected vice-chair in 2005. During his tenure on the Rhode Island State Board

of Education, Guida has worked tirelessly on issues of student assessment, educator quality, school improvement, and academic

standards, and was integral to Rhode Island’s ESEA waiver request and revisions in 2011.

The National Association of State Boards of Education represents America’s state and territorial boards of education. Our principal

objectives are to strengthen state leadership in education policymaking, advocate equality of access to educational opportunity,

promote excellence in the education of all students, and ensure responsible lay governance of education. Learn more

Barrington Public Schools Recognized in the

on the Quest Towards Blended Learning

Excerpt from Article:

“In another RI district, Barrington, Assistant

Superintendent for Curriculum and Assessment Paula

Dillon and the Director of Technology Katie Miller

work closely together to create professional

development with a personalized approach. Rather

than having all teachers sit through half-day or full-day

workshops in lock-step, they have adopted an

‘unconference approach’. On one such day, they asked

technology-savvy teachers from across the district to

host various informal sessions on a variety of topics

ranging from basic tech skills to advanced tech

integration and blended learning. Teachers are

empowered to make choices about how to spend their

time on these days, based on their needs and goals.

These innovative approaches to supporting the

advancement of blended learning would not occur

without district leaders that are strong in competencies

like Vision & Planning, Modeling, Blended PD, & On-

Site Support. This kind of leadership is critical in

taking next generation teaching and learning to scale.”
