Chris Radmonovich embarks on his third season at the helm of the Wagner water polo team.

Last year, in a season in which the Seahawks were ranked in the top-20 for the first time in school history, Wagner complied a 20-18 record while finishing runner-up in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the second consecutive season. Radmonovich coached his second Honorable Mention All-American during his short tenure in senior Chelsea Beck, as well as three First-Team All-MAAC athletes in Beck, senior Lauren French, and junior Laura Karbach.

Beck was also named to the Capital One Academic All-American team, while the Seahawks took home the nations top GPA among all divisions of water polo. Wagner averaged a 3.515, which beat out second-place Harvard University, at 3.507.

In Radmonovich’s first season with the Green & White, the Seahawks compiled an overall record of 17-15, finishing second in the MAAC with a record of 5-5. During his inaugural season, he led French to Honorable Mention All-American status and aided in the development of Beck, the 2011 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Radmonovich has been instrumental in leading the Seahawks to accomplishments out of the water, as the Water Polo squad has continued to participated in the “Tunnel to Towers” run the past two seasons. The 5k run helps to honor Steven Siller, a former New York City firefighter that passed away during the September 11 attacks.

Prior to his arrival on Grymes Hill, Radmonovich served as the head coach of the Hutt Aquatics Club in Wellington, New Zealand where he led the senior men’s team to the Silver Medal at the National Championship Tournament.

Prior to those stints, Radmonovich was in California for six years, spending the last three as the head coach of the Stockton Water Polo and Swim Club and as the Aquatics Director of the Saint Mary’s High School aquatic program. While at Saint Mary’s, he helped lead the Rams to seven league titles and one CIF Championship, all of which were firsts in school history.

Former Seahawk standout and 2011 graduate Carina Giles enters her second season as an assistant coach at her alma mater.

“We are excited to have Carina on the team as an assistant” said Radmonovich. “As a player at Wagner, she proved to be a dedicated leader during her playing career. Carina’s commitment to the team is unmatched and we feel that she is a valuable asset to the coaching staff. Her knowledge and passion for the sport is a positive aspect of the team.”

A native of Mohnton, PA, Giles was a four-year letterwinner in both water polo and swimming at Governor Mifflin High School. During her tenure as a Seahawk, Giles accumulated 81 goals, is ranked third on the all-time assists record list with a total of 104, eighth in all-time steals with 118 and fourth in exclusions drawn with 112.

Serving as a co-captain for the duration of the 2011 season, Giles started in all 32 games and led Wagner to the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship game. As well as being a member of the 2011 MAAC Water Polo All-Academic Team and an Academic All American, Giles graduated from Wagner with a Bachelor’s of Science in psychology with minors in gender studies and art.

In addition to her coaching duties, Giles will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Education.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKAfter two straight seasons of falling short in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)

championship game, Head Coach Chris Radmonovich’s Wagner College squad is back

and motivated to have another successful season in 2013. Radmonovich and Assistant Coach Carina

Giles led the Seahawks to a 20-18 (9-3 MAAC) record last season, the third 20-win season in school

history and the first for Radmonovich, who will begin his third season at the helm.

The Seahawks will have to deal with the loss of four seniors from last year’s team, including two former All-Americans in Chelsea Beck and Lauren French. Despite these losses, the Seahawks welcome leadership from four new seniors; all of which bring a lot of experience to the table. Seniors Laura Karbach (Abington, PA

/ Germantown Academy), Katie Jordan (Pasadena, CA / Agoura), Leslie Poole (Downey, CA / Warren) and Tatum Colitz (Reading, PA / Wilson) will be looked on to provide leadership to the team.

After a season in which she was named MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Karbach is back in the net for the Seahawks. The goalie was second in the conference, saving 8.94 shots per game, and totaling 341 saves on the season, while starting all 38 games for the Seahawks. The senior was also one of twelve members named to the 2012 MAAC Water Polo All-Academic Team.

Karbach, along with Jordan, will serve as the co-captains of the 2013 team. A utility player, Jordan played in 26 games last year, while being named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for the second straight season.

Other than Karbach, Wagner returns four other players that appeared in all 38 games last season, with one of them being junior Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado). The center scored 33 goals and added two assists in those contests, while adding 12 steals and drawing 23 exclusions.

Stacy McGregor (Reading, PA / Wilson) is another junior that appeared in all 38 games a year ago. The Seahawks will look for her to help with the scoring on attack, as she scored 14 goals and had 41 steals a season ago.

Rachel Burns (Auckland, NZ / Diocesan School) and Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) are two sophomores that bring much experience from their first season having appeared in all 38 games in their first

season on Grymes Hill. Burns started 36 of those 38 games, scoring 14 goals while adding 37 assists, 51 steals, and finishing second on the team with 58 exclusions drawn. Greenough also had a terrific freshman season, scoring 33 points off of 16 goals and 17 assists, and adding 42 steals.

Wagner welcomes four freshmen that will begin their first season for the Seahawks. Kendall Kulper (Gold River, CA / Rio Americano) and Carolina Silva (Pembroke Pines, FL / Pembroke Pines Charter) will both be featured on attack, while Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) and Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) will play center and Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley) will be featured as a utility player.

Opened in 1999 and part of a $13 million campus-wide improvement, the Spiro Sports Center is a 93,000 square foot student-oriented multi-purpose athletic and recreational facility. Since its opening, it has become a major focus of student activity on campus. The facility, which tripled the existing athletics facilities, is designed to serve the recreational and intercollegiate athletic needs of the Wagner College community.

Wagner’s Division I Water Polo Team and Division I Swim Team compete in this six lane, 25 yard NCAA Regulation size facility. The pool also plays host to the Wagner Aquatic Club as well as

holds hours for recreational swim.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATIONDr. Richard Guarasci

Wagner College President Dr. Richard Guarasci is the 18th President of Wagner College, where he was previously the Provost and Senior Vice President, responsible for

academic and student affairs, admissions, and support service, in addition to serving as the chief operating officer. He holds the rank of

Professor of Political Science and he teaches in the areas of democracy, citizenship and American diversity.

At Wagner, Dr. Guarasci founded The Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts, the four-year curriculum for all undergraduates, that draws together a substantive liberal arts core into a series of learning communities and experiential learning tutorials.

Dr. Guarasci was Dean of the College and Professor of Political Science at Hobart College from 1992-1997. Previously he served as Dean and founding Director of the First Year Program at St. Lawrence University, a nationally celebrated model program of democratic living and learning required for all first year students that joined first year housing to a two semester schedule.

Dr. Guarasci is the author of Democratic Education in the Age of Difference: Redefining Citizenship in Higher Education (Jossey-Bass, 1997), and numerous other publications including 3 books, more than 20 articles and more than 50 conference presentations. He is now a national leader in higher education with many speaking engagements throughout the United States. He is an active educational consultant for more than 20 universities and colleges. Time Magazine selected him as a National Undergraduate Educator and he received awards from the Sears Foundation, the Glitz Family Prize and many other citations including a day of recognition by proclamation of the City Council in Geneva, New York. Recently, Congressman Vito Fossella and the Staten Island Civic Association both cited him for public service on Staten Island. He served on the National Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges and Universities,The Board of Trustees of the Independent Colleges Fund of New York and he is co-chair of New York State Campus Compact. He is a Fellow of the Society for Values in Higher Education (SVHE) and a PEW Foundation Fellow with the Washington Center for Learning in building natural leadership in Learning Communities. He is a member of the faculty for the Asheville Institute and an Advising Board Member for the Models for Democracy Project of SVHE. Dr. Guarasci recently authored ‘Developing the Democratic Arts” in About Campus (Feb. 2001) and “On Becoming the Good College: Lessons Learned” in Liberal Education.

Dr. Guarasci holds a Bachelor of Science from Fordham University. He received his M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University.

Director of Athletics / Head Football Coach Under Hameline’s leadership, the Seahawk athletic department has undegone

an ambitious expansion in both sport offerings and facility improvements.

Known for his keen vision and boundless enthusiam, Hameline was influential in establishing the Seahawk Golf Classic, now in its 19th year, and the Seahawk Club, a pair of intitiaves aimed at increasing funds for the scholarship endowment and complete financial support for the athletic department.

An institution of high academic standards, Wagner was cited in the March 18, 2002 edition of US News & World Report for have the 15th best graduation rate amongst more than 300 Division I college and/or universities.

Hameline’s coaching record speaks for itself. He owns an all-time record of 213-127-2 (.626). Hameline had a memorable 2012 football season, as the Seahawks were Champions of the Northeast Conference (NEC) while becoming the first NEC team to ever win a game in the FCS Playoffs, as Wagner defeated Colgate in the first-round. In 2011, he became just the sixth active coach in the FCS to accumulate 200 career wins. His 213 wins also rank him within the top 25 of active head coaches among all collegiate levels.

In 2009, he guided the Seahawks to their 22nd winning season in his tenure, a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the NEC. The Seahawks, picked eighth in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll, were the surprise team of the year in the conference, finishing in a tie for third place. In addition, the Seahawks were the only NEC team to knock off first-place Central Connecticut St.

Hameline’s overall coaching ledger includes five ECAC Championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship — all told, 10 post-season appearances in 29 seasons. Hameline won his 175th career game - all at Wagner with a come-from-behind victory over St. Francis (PA) in the 2005 season finale. He became the winningest coach in Wagner College history in 1990.

The highlight, of course, is the 19-3 win over heavily-favored Dayton in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship. Against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Hameline’s Seahawks rolled to a 13-1 record, winning more games than any college football team in America. The team earned the school’s second Lambert Trophy, symbolic of football superiority in the East among Division III schools, and ECAC Team of the Year recognition. Hameline was honored by many organizations including the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year.

Hameline was one of 23 members of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Committee (MIBA), which previously stood as the governing body of the National Invitation Tournament. He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association as well as the Division I-AA Eastern Regional Football Advisory Committee.

The 60- year-old administrator, has been a key developer of the Northeast Conference, serving on numerous committees and served as president of the league. Eight years ago, Hameline was honored for his playing, coaching and administrative achievements when he was inducted into the Utica Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, Hameline was given the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

An outstanding defensive back at Brockport State, Hameline received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1975, and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in education from the University of Albany in 1977.

THIS IS WAGNER COLLEGE As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlook-

ing Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent residential liberal arts college enrolling a capacity of

over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest finan-cial and cultural capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of

Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily prescient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all

other all liberal arts colleges in the country. Wagner is New York State’s southernmost college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida.

The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading financial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master new skills and technologies, and to reflect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the class-room.

A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gar-dens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New York Harbor. In early 2009, former U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Wagner College and President Richard Guarasci, at the second annual Clinton Global Initiative University. Wagner was cited for the Port Richmond Partnership, an innovative program that will focus the school’s community resources in an effort to improve quality of life in a specific Staten Island neighborhood.

Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic college setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 television series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Richard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private military school in the HBO series, The Sopranos.

Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region.

DIRECTIONS TO WAGNER

Mid Atlantic States and Southern New Jersey: Take the New Jersey Turnpike north to Exit 10 (Outerbridge Crossing). After crossing the bridge, take Route 440 North (West Shore Expressway) for approximately 6 miles to I-278 East (Staten Island Expressway). Take I-278 East for approximately 5 miles, following signs to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and Brooklyn. Take Exit 13 (Clove Road/Richmond Road/Hyland Boulevard). At the first traffic light, turn left onto Clove Road. At the second light on Clove Road, turn right onto Howard Avenue. A sign for the College is visible at this intersection. Follow Howard Avenue to the top of Grymes Hill.

Southern New Jersey Shore: Take the Garden State Parkway north to Exit 127 (Outerbridge Crossing/Staten Island). Follow directions from Outerbridge.

FROM POINTS SOUTH

FROM POINTS NORTH AND EASTNew England (via New York) and Long Island: Take either the Belt Parkway or the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to the Verrazano Bridge onto Staten Island; remain on I-278 West. Northern New Jersey: Take the New Jersey Turnpike to either Exit 13 (Goethals Bridge) from northern New Jersey, or Exit 10 (Outerbridge Crossing) from southern/central New Jersey. Follow directions provided above from the Goethals Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing.

Plane: Wagner College is most easily accessed from Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and JFK Airports. Car service is available between Wagner College and all three airports for around $40-$50 each way.

Train: Amtrak, Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Transit trains arrive at Penn Station in Manhattan at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. From Penn Station, take either a cab or the New York City Subway (IRT Downtown #1 or #9 train to South Ferry; IRT #4 or #5 train to Bowling Green; IRT N or R to Whitehall Station) to the Battery Park Ferry Terminal. Take the Staten Island Ferry (no fare) to Staten Island. From the ferry terminal on Staten Island, the College is a short ride via car service, which can be picked up at the terminal.

The Staten Island Ferry is run by the City of New York for one pragmatic reason: To transport Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan. Yet, the 5 mile, 25 minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor and a no-hassle boat ride, for free!

2012 HIGHLIGHTSWater Polo Tops Nation In Team GPA

The Association of College Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced its 2011-

12 All-Academic Awards and with it came the news that the Wagner College women’s

water polo team’s 3.515 GPA is number-one in the nation among all 56 water polo

programs that comprise Division I, II and III, edging out second-place Harvard, which

posted a team GPA of 3.507. In addition, Wagner ranked first nationally with

Water Polo Sensation Chelsea Beck Named All-American Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) has to make room in her trophy case for yet another award as the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) named the recent Wagner College graduate to its All-American team.

Beck, who earned honorable mention honors along with 35 other student-athletes from across the nation, finds herself in an elite group of just 57 women in Division I to be named a 2012 All-American.

“It’s unbelievable,” Beck said. “I never thought that would be a possibility. I give a lot of credit to my coach and my team. The work ethic they instilled helped us get this honor.”

Beck’s All-American selection is the second major award she has been honored with in June of 2012 as she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Second Team earlier in the month. On May 21, Beck was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First Team, for the second straight year.

Seahawk Head Coach Chris Radmonovich, who will enter his third season at the helm of the Wagner program, is effusive in hispraise of Beck’s accolades during the 2012 season and throughout her career.

“Chelsea has done just a terrific job for us both in the pool and out of the pool and is richly deserving of this honor,” Radmonovich said. “Being named an All-American by the water polo coaches is the highest accomplishment that an athlete can achieve in the sport.”

Beck has also demonstrated her proficiency in the classroom throughout during her four years on Grymes Hill, as the education and psychology major posted a cumulative GPA of 3.981, tops among all Seahawk female

student-athletes.

12 Seahawks earning spots on the ACWPC Individual All-Academic list, which requires a minimum 3.20 GPA. “I salute our women’s water polo team on earning this significant achievement,” said Wagner College Athletic Director Walt Hameline. “To earn the highest GPA in your sport, while at the same time placing the highest number of student-athletes on your sport’s All-Academic list, is truly special. And when you combine that with a winning record and an appearance in your conference’s championship game, it just speaks to the tremendous quality of student-athletes within the water polo program here at Wagner.” Seahawk Head Coach Chris Radmonovich, who will enter his third season leading the Green & White in 2013, also noted the hard work and effort put forth in the classroom by the student-athletes on his team. “I am extremely proud of the effort that the team has made in the classroom,” Radmonovich said. “It is a testament to their hard work and dedication as student-athletes.”
