Why physical activity means so much to me Matt Delaney, Managing Director

For me, sport and physical activity has always been a very important part of my life, helping me learn life skills and build my self esteem. I am keen to pass this on through TGO gyms.

My father was physically active and as a child I watched him play cricket and work out in our small ‘home gym’ consisting of a lat pull down, chest press, bench and leg press. He used to encourage me to train to improve my chances in sports at school.

It certainly helped, I went to a comprehensive school in Bexleyheath and managed to make all the first teams. It is credit to my PE teachers who encouraged me to further my passion and join local clubs.

In my twenties, I decided to focus on basketball and played National league for 10 years at clubs such as Crystal Palace and Kingston and then in my university team at Borough Road.

I have always wanted to share my passion for fitness with others. After university I became a PE teacher in a challenging South London senior school where I taught the Ferdinand brothers. I found sport and fitness a great way to connect with young people and a great way for them to develop self-discipline as well as have fun.

I then joined Sport England and worked my way through the ranks to become the London Regional Director at Sport England where (amongst other things) I was heavily involved in work for the Olympic bid.

The Great Outdoor Gym Company gives me the greatest possible chance to help people do more sport and physical activity. With hundreds of free outdoor gyms already installed we are making physical activity barrier-free for communities all over the world.

Looking back at 2012

In 2008, TGO worked with Tier One Olympic sponsor adidas to bring a unique London 2012 branded outdoor gym and sports space to Local authorities parks and open spaces up and down the country. The project was called adiZones.

adiZones gave authorities access to the Olympic logos and a tangible community sports participation legacy. adiZones are gyms and multi sports zones designed in the shape of the 2012 logo, targeting young people into activity, encouraging them to take up a sport.

The adiZones were launched by members of team GB including Jess Ennis, Mo Farah, and Tom Daley. TGO knitted together the demands of the sponsor, the local authority needs and encouraged the multi agency approach to activating the adiZones.

The impact of the adiZones was measured by Nielson showing 73% of under 16 year olds agreed the adiZones helped them become more active in sports and exercise. The results for communities was even better showing 87% saying the adiZone has had a positive effect on their community.

Now around 300,000 people have access to these facilities. This is a great stepping stone for future Olympians.

1. Specify SafetyAre children going to access your gym?

If the gym you are installing is open access then the answer to this question is yes. Children will be attracted to the gym. They love the moving equipment. They will not be detracted by a small sign saying this gym is for adults only.

Your due diligence for this is to ensure the gym meets play standard (EN1176) & the soon to be published PAS 888 to ensure it is free from known hazards like crush-points, entrapments and sharp edges.

Just specifying EN1176 compliant may not be enough as some companies will self certify. (A bit like doing your own MOT on your own car!)

2. Specify qualityTGO manufactures its gym equipment in Britain. The steel sourced is kite marked steel. All engineers are well trained and skilled. The factory conducts itself in accordance with ISO9001. Talented engineers oversee the creation of TGO product.

Many outdoor gyms are manufactured in the Far East where there isn’t the same approach to manufacturing as in the UK. Sourcing of steel is often unregulated. Laborers are often unskilled. Common practices seen in the UK like using jigs aren’t always in place in the far East. There also aren’t always robust QC processes in place. The result can be weak equipment prone to breakages.

So always find out aboutthe factory where thegym equipment ismanufactured.

Outdoor Classroom Gym

Senior Gym

According to the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines, adults and people over 65 should aim to do at least two and a half hours each week of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Muscle strengthening activity should also be included twice a week by adults.

Research by the University of Essex shows that exercising outdoors boosts people’s physical and mental health more than going to indoor gyms, even in the winter.
