    Sarcoma Foundation of America Announces Dr. Robert Maki as Nobility in Science Honoree

    and Mark Herzlich, Ewings Sarcoma Survivor and New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI

    Champion, as a Presenter at its 11th

    Annual Gala

    DAMASCUS, MDMarch 22, 2013The Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is pleased to

    announce that Robert Maki, MD, PhD, will be recognized at the 11th

    Annual SFA Gala with the 2013Nobility in Science Award for his dedication to the science and research toward finding the cure for

    sarcoma. The recognition will take place on April 29 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. SFAis also pleased to announce that Mark Herzlich, 2010 SFA Courage Award winner, Ewings Sarcoma

    survivor and New York Giants Super Bowl Champion, will again join SFA to present at this yearsgala.

    We are so pleased to acknowledge Dr. Maki this year for his career focus and advancements insarcoma research, said SFA President Mark Thornton, MD, PhD. And we recognize Mr. Herzlich

    for his ongoing commitment to increasing sarcoma research and awareness.

    Each year the SFA also bestows two more honors to individuals in the sarcoma community. The

    Burdo Family will be honored with the Vision of Hope Award for their philanthropic commitment to

    finding the cure for sarcoma. Also, the SFA Courage Award is presented annually to individualshonoring their strength and perseverance in their battle against sarcoma. The 2013 SFA CourageAwards will be presented to David Brenneman, Peter Ebright, Corrie Painter, Phoebe Spear and

    Francis Thomas. Entertainer Larry Strickler will also join the celebration this year by serving as the

    Master of Ceremonies.

    The Sarcoma Foundation of America is honored to stand side-by-side with these inspiring

    individuals, said SFA Chief Executive Officer Tony Ferlenda. Their hope is the motivation that

    opens the doors that create the opportunities toward finding the cure for sarcoma in our time.

    Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1 percent of all adult cancers) but rather prevalent in children (about 15

    percent of all childhood cancers). At any one time, 50,000 patients and their families are struggling withsarcoma. Every year, about 14,000 new cases are diagnosed and about 6,000 people die from the disease.
