The Parker Chamber of Commerce has embraced its more vis-ible presence in the community as it continues to be one of the fastest-growing chambers in the Denver metro area. It leads the way with professional development and networking opportunities, advocacy, leadership, and community development programs.

The Chamber moved into a 2400-square-foot facility on the south-west corner of Mainstreet and South Pikes Peak Drive in the fall of 2012. This expansion has allowed the Chamber to offer a full-service Visitor & Information Center, as well as enhanced business support services and meeting space.

“We are pleased to be so visible on Mainstreet, giving visitors greater access to information about the community while also giv-ing Chamber members a fantastic outlet for promoting their busi-nesses,” said Chamber CEO Dan Rodriguez.

The new visitor center is an information hub with walls filled with marketing flyers and business cards that make it easy for residents and visitors to find products and services that meet their specif-ic needs. These marketing walls are just one way the Chamber works to serve the community and help its members grow their businesses.

Incorporated in October 1965, the Chamber’s primary goal is to connect the business community, promote the success of its mem-bers and drive economic development. But the Board of Directors and staff also produce events that bring the community together.

Town residents show up en masse to enjoy community festiv-ities that wouldn’t happen without the Chamber’s support, including the Parker Days summer festival, Movies in the Park, Wine Walks in Old Town Parker and the an-nual Holiday Carriage Rides.

Members can become the heart of the Chamber by volunteer-ing as Ambassadors. Ambassadors attend Chamber events and help new members become acquainted with other members and Chamber benefits. Their volunteer efforts give them incredible op-portunities to make connections benefitting their businesses and the community. There also are a variety of committees that mem-bers can join to enhance Parker Chamber programming and the community.

In addition, members can join one of five leads groups or attend a forum, where specific interest groups can network with each other. must confront. The first relates to structural changes in our economy and how future trends will affect our local economic potential. The second question is more short-term in nature, namely - what will 2013 look like? Will we see continued improvement with activity levels near our 10-year aver-age or will we slide back to levels of activity that reflect recession- era trends?

Long-term trends for Parker and Douglas County remain positive. Not only do we expect con-tinued population, household and employment growth, but the presence of a highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce will con-tinue to attract more knowledge and IT-based companies like some of those listed above. Our long-term challenge in sustain-ing local economic growth relates to our ability to continue to develop sufficient infrastructure for both firms and residents. In the short-run, uncertainty over the direction of federal fiscal policy will continue to create significant impacts. The longer this uncertainty persists, the longer it will take for firms to make new investment decisions and the real estate marketing to fully re-cover.

Parker and Douglas County continue to be attractive locations for new businesses and residents. We continue to find innova-tive solutions to development challenges and we are willing to be aggressive in pursuing new development opportunities. We see 2013 as another positive year for economic growth in Park-er and look forward to the opportunities ahead.

Parker Economic Development Trends – The Future Looks Good!

“There are clear signs of improvement in the local economy” - a simple statement we’ve been waiting to say for a long time. While the Parker area and Douglas County economies have generally outperformed the region and state when it comes to employment and retail sales growth over the past five years, that’s really meant we’ve just managed to stay in positive ter-ritory while many other areas have seen negative growth. But as the numbers and announcements come in for 2012, we’re finally able to see some meaningful recovery from the recent recession.

Due to continued population and household growth, Parker single-family building permits issued for 2012 returned to their 10-year average and exceeded each of the previous five years. Preliminary retail sales data for 2012 shows the highest single year increase in the past seven years. To be sure, the office and retail commercial real estate markets are still relatively weak lo-cally, but the industrial, single-family and multi-family markets are showing robust growth.

Douglas County has also been the site of choice for a number of significant new corporate expansions and relocations over the past year. Hitachi Data Systems, Redwood Trust, Visa, Arrow Electronics and TriZetto have all announced plans to locate or expand in Douglas County. These companies alone could add more than 2,000 jobs to the local economic base. Their direct employment impacts, combined with the associated growth in their respective supplier bases and the service needs of their new employees, will continue to fuel local area economic growth.

Parker is not the sleepy little town that people often associate with a suburb of a major U.S. city. In fact, it’s just the opposite. With venues like Colorado Golf Club, Colorado Horse Park and the PACE Center, the Parker area has become a destination.

2013 is a banner year as visitors and competitors travel to the area for the most prestigious women’s golf event in August and the Colorado Horse Park’s annual Summer Circuit that runs for six weeks in June and July. In addition, the PACE Center will attract thousands of out-of-towners with its local, regional and national performances, including Spyro Gyra and Air Supply.

The Solheim Cup at Colorado Golf ClubThe Solheim Cup, held Aug. 13-18 at Colorado Golf Club at 8000 Preservation Trail, will bring more than 100,000 people to the area from around the world, creating an economic impact of about $20 million.

“We’ve got folks from all over the world who are coming,” said Becky Newell, the 2013 tournament director. “Solheim Cup spec-tators are travelers. They love it.”

The international women’s competition is held every two years and alternates between Europe and the United States. Planned by the Ladies Professional Golf Association when it is held in the United States, the competition pits the U.S. team against the European team in match play as crowds hoot and holler from the stands.

“The Solheim Cup is the big event in women’s golf,” according to Tom Ferrell, Colorado Golf Club’s marketing director. “It’s more like the Olympics than a golf tournament,” with people chanting and singing like they do with World Cup Soccer, he added.

The area will get additional exposure from the 74 hours of live coverage on the Golf Channel, where more than 6 million viewers are expected to tune in.

Newell and Ferrell said the 1,700-acre course was selected be-cause it sets up well for such an event, had successfully hosted the 2010 Senior PGA Championship and had the support of the Town of Parker and local businesses.

“It’s just a remarkable course,” Ferrell said. “It’s got a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains” and plenty of space for hospitality and production crews. For more information, visit www.SolheimCup.com. The Colorado Horse ParkThe Colorado Horse Park, located just south of Parker at 7522 S. Pinery Drive, hosts summer competitions that attract international riders and trainers who fill Parker’s hotels and restaurants for six to seven weeks every summer, said Kyle Fenner, director of business development for the Horse Park.

“These are affluent people who fundamentally live here for the summer, and they spend a lot of money,” Fenner said, noting that, on average, a horse is accompanied by three people who stay 22 days and spend $10,000. And, on any given day, 1,000 horses will be at the park.

According to an economic impact study performed in 2012, the non-local competitors and their staffs spend about $13.3 million, creating 216 jobs and $4.2 million in earnings. Non-local spectators spent about $2 million, while local visitors spent about $800,000.

The Colorado Horse Park has hosted other international events, including the North American Young Riders, considered to be the Junior Olympics of North America, three times – in 1999, 2000 and 2008, said Carole Kenney, equine manager since 1996.

“It’s always been (Colorado Horse Park Founder) Helen Krieble’s goal to have world-class events here,” Kenney said.

While these events attract the largest crowds, Kenney and Fenner also noted that there are numerous smaller shows and events, in-cluding up to 10 educational clinics with world-class equestrians that are held throughout the year.

The 2013 schedule also includes the U.S. Hunter Jumper Associa-tion’s Emerging Athletes Clinic on June 25-28, where 24 amateur or professional equestrians under the age of 21 will be trained by top professional riders, trainers and stable managers.

The 149-acre park, which is the largest horse park west of the Mis-sissippi and is second in show volume to Kentucky, continues to make improvements to keep its competitors coming back.

“We have to compete with the world-class facilities if we’re going to stay on their calendars,” Fenner said.

Admission is free to spectators, so head out to the Horse Park to watch these equestrian competitions with family and out-of-town visitors. It’s a great way to spend the day. The Town of Parker’s Entertainment and Cultural OfferingsThe Parker Arts, Culture and Events (PACE) Center is starting to make downtown a destination hotspot for those seeking culture and arts.

The PACE Center, which opened in October 2011 at 20000 Pikes Peak Ave., sold more than 30,000 tickets for 109 shows in its first year, said Cultural and Arts Director Elaine Mariner. While many of those tickets were sold to Parker area residents, she said, “we are developing a solid following in Littleton, Aurora, Castle Rock and Elbert County.”

The shows aren’t the only attractions bringing people to down-town. “Old Town Parker also is a destination for meetings and events, such as weddings,” she said, noting the PACE Center of-fers meeting and event space, as well as the educational classes,

year-round.

Mariner said Parker has a lot going for it as it strives to become an arts and cultural destination, including the PACE Center, Main-street Center, O’Brien Park, its many restaurants and large num-ber of events that are held on Mainstreet.

“The town is serious about making arts and culture a part of its economic development,” she said. It received an Emerging Cre-ative District designation by the state of Colorado in March 2012, receiving a $2000 grant and technical assistance to encourage the growth of creative industries. Much work is yet to be done in that area as a steering committee still needs to be set up with representatives from the arts, culture and business communities.

In the meantime, the town’s cultural venues will attract people to professional productions offered by regional and national touring groups. These include hometown favorites like the theatrical and musical shows produced by Parker companies such as the Parker Theater Academy and Classic Acts, and holiday performances by the Parker Chorale and Parker Symphony Orchestra.

“People will see us bring in more professional touring acts. At the same time, we are absolutely committed to local groups,” Mariner said. “The community really responds to its own on stage.” For more information, visit www.PACEcenteronline.org.

Parker’s award-winning Parks and Recreation Department offers area residents a little bit of everything – from classes, athletic leagues and camps to a variety of facilities for those who simply want to get out and get some exercise or have some fun.

In fact, it’s no surprise that the Parks and Recreation Department has twice been awarded the most prestigious honor in the indus-try – the National Gold Medal Grand Award from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the Na-tional Recreation and Park Association. The department won the gold award in 2000 and 2011.

Led by Director Jim Cleveland, the department’s programs and facilities are plentiful. The staff is constantly adding new classes and programs, including Latin dance-inspired Zumba classes for kids aged 6 to 12 and for folks who are 50 or older. There’s also a fitness class offering suspension training to strengthen muscles and core stability.

The department also thinks about those with special needs. It offers a Quick Beats class for developmentally disabled children aged 2 to 5 who can practice skills to reach developmental mile-stones through music and a Musical Beats class for older adults seeking to improve long- and short-term memory through music.

And let’s not skim over the incredible facilities, which include:

Parker Recreation Center, 17301 Lincoln Ave.This state-of-the-art recreational facility features an indoor pool with water slide and sauna, triple gymnasium, three multi-pur-pose rooms, cardiovascular and circuit equipment, multi-station and free weights, an aerobics area, cycling studio and locker fa-cilities.

Just outside the facility, you’ll find three outdoor inline hockey rinks. And the adjacent Challenger Regional Park features three lighted ball fields, a children’s playground and several multi-pur-pose sports fields.

Parker Fieldhouse, 18700 E. Plaza Dr.The 100,000 square-foot Parker Fieldhouse hosts many of Parker Recreation’s youth and adult sports leagues. Sports enthusiasts also can take advantage of the facility’s sports turf, batting cages, a gymnasium, inline rink with Sport Court flooring, climbing wall, elevated track, fitness loft and an indoor playground.

Railbender Skate and Tennis Park, 10543 Twenty Mile RoadAmenities at Railbender include a 36,000-square-foot lighted skate park with street, plaza, bowl and transition features, plus two beginner bowls. The park also has six lighted tennis courts, which are open to casual players or to more serious players who want to take lessons or participate in league play. A trailhead for the Cherry Creek Regional Trail is also on the site.

O’Brien Park and H2O’Brien Outdoor Pool, 10795 Victorian Dr. Located on Mainstreet in downtown Parker, O’Brien Park’s amenities include an outdoor pool, a lighted softball field, basket-ball court, a playground and gazebo for gatherings and popular Parker events, including the Mayor’s Tree Lighting.

Not only does the Town of Parker offer area residents great rec-reational programming with an award-winning Parks and Rec Department, the private sector also provides many enjoyable opportunities for the whole family.

Bardo’s Diamond Sports, located at 18850 S. Clarke Road, is the largest and most complete indoor baseball training facility in the Denver metro area and is quickly becoming a hub for base-ball and softball activities. Parker also is home of the Double Angel Foundation, which operates a baseball complex at 9345 Newlin Gulch Road.

If golf is more your style, there are a variety of options. Golf Zone Adventure offers a family-friendly, mini-golf experience at 18442 Pony Express Drive.

Residents have plenty of room to roam and play in the Parker area’s 500 acres of town- and privately-owned parks, and more than 1,800 acres of open space.

While three of the major parks (Challenger Regional Park, O’Brien Park and Railbender Skate and Tennis Park) are highlighted in the recreational opportunities article in this magazine, below is a list of other town and county facili-ties.

Additionally, numerous semi-public parks and open space areas are available that are maintained by homeowners’ associations or other organi-zations, including Cottonwood Community Park and Open Space, which is accessible from Cherry Creek Trail.

Auburn Hills Community Park, 11682 Bradbury Ranch RoadThis 3-acre park features a large, multi-use sports field. The park also has a unique educational area with six stations - a butterfly garden, a weather station, plant life cycle, Colorado wildlife and geology, astronomy, and an outdoor seating area for class lec-tures.

Bar CCC Park, 10951 S. Twenty Mile RoadA 7.7-acre park with access to the Cherry Creek and Sulphur Gulch trails with a trailhead, parking and improved pedestrian access to the park. Amenities include a ball field and a picnic shelter.

Bayou Gulch Regional Park, 4815 Fox Sparrow RoadOwned and managed by Douglas County Parks, this 205-acre park features soft surface equestrian trails, a fenced dog park, two asynthetic fields, picnic shelter, playground and basketball court.

McCabe Meadows, 19700 Indian Pipe LaneHome to the Parker Arboretum, this 6-acre park has a trailhead and a picnic area with parking.

Salisbury Equestrian Park, 11920 Motsenbocker RoadThis 160-acre facility serves Parker’s equestrian community, and youth and adult sports leagues. Equestrian features include a lighted arena with bleacher seating for about 80 people, a warm-up arena, renovated dressage arena, multi-use equestrian field and a two-story equestrian building. Four youth baseball fields, sponsored by the Colorado Rockies, are located on the north side of the park. The park has a multi-use sports field for soccer and lacrosse, and several picnic shelters and playgrounds, including an accessible playground for those with special needs. 16

Stroh Ranch Soccer Fields, 18775 Stroh RoadThis 16.5-acre park has two regulation-size soccer fields, a play-ground and a picnic shelter. It also has adjoining open space ex-tending from the northern boundary of the park to Cherry Creek, including a trail connection to the Cherry Creek Regional Trail.

Tallman Meadow Park, 12335 Canterberry ParkwayA 12-acre park with picnic and bar-becue facilities, a shade shelter, two playground areas, a multi-use sports field and baseball field. The park’s meandering trails connect to the Tallman Gulch Regional Trail via a pedestrian bridge.

Parker Area TrailsThe town maintains about 27 miles of paved and multi-use trails for bi-cycle riders, walkers, joggers and

equestrians to enjoy, including:

Baldwin Gulch Trail – This trails follows an intermittent water-way of the same name from Lincoln Avenue (between Parker Road and Pine Drive) to its current endpoint at Twenty Mile Road, where there is trailhead parking. An underpass allows trail us-ers to safely cross beneath Parker Road and Twenty-Mile Road before the trail connects to the Cherry Creek Trail via Pine Lane.

Cherry Creek Trail, - About 8 miles long, this is the most sig-nificant trail in the town. It has a 10-foot wide concrete path for walkers and bicyclers and an adjacent unpaved equestrian trail. Trailheads with parking, restrooms and picnic areas are located along the trail at Stroh Ranch, McCabe Meadows Park, Bar CCC Park, Railbender Park, Parker Recreation Center, Cottonwood Community Park and Preservation Park.

Newlin Gulch Trail - This trail connects the commercial develop-ment at Lincoln Avenue and Jordan Road to the Cherry Creek Trail. Path users can pick up the trail behind the Stonegate King Soopers, along Recreation Drive. Underpasses at Lincoln Ave-nue and Jordan Road connect the trail to neighborhood paths in Stonegate.

Parker Preservation Park and Trailhead - The northern gate-way into Parker and Douglas County, this park and trailhead are located at the northwest corner of Parker Road and Valley Hi Drive. A concrete path connecting the trailhead to Cherry Creek Trail was completed in late 2011. Preservation Park is located just north of the trailhead. Home to two historical structures, the park is designed to be a resource

devoted to local history. Future plans include relocation of additional historical structures, as well as construction of a picnic shelter and rest area.

Sulphur Gulch Trail – Designated a Flat 14er as part of the local effort to encourage people to get more exercise, this 4-mile trail connects to the Cherry Creek Trail in Bar CCC Park and extends east with an underpass at Parker Road. Sulphur Gulch Trail also connects with several community trails, including Tallman Gulch Trail in the Rowley Downs subdivision and various trails in Canter-berry Crossing.

Tallman Gulch Trail – Also a Flat 14er, this 3-mile path extends from the Idyllwilde com-munity, passes north past Iron Horse Elementary School and then connects to the Sulphur Gulch Trail at Stonehenge Way in Rowley Downs. Along the 8-foot wide concrete path, hik-ers will find Tallman Meadow Park and the Slemmer Barn historic site, both of which have parking and picnic facilities.

Douglas County Libraries is among the industry leaders as librar-ies across the country strive to accommodate customers in the digital age.

With a Digital Branch, a ‘buy now’ feature and a mobile app called DCL To Go, the library system is making it easy for its patrons to have timely access to materials they want and need.

The library district, which includes the Parker Library, also has been on the cutting edge in developing partnerships with smaller publishers who allow the district to expand its collection of e-book titles through actual ownership.

Parker Library Manager Amy Long said the district has thousands of titles that it owns because of the cutting-edge approach it has taken to expand its e-collection. All together, the library also pro-vides access to more than 37,000 e-books through Overdrive, 3M and directly from publishers like Smashwords & Poisioned Pen Press who have sold the district copies of their e-books.

But books and audiobooks aren’t the only items available at the Digital Branch, which can be accessed through the DCL website at www.DouglasCountyLibraries.org. Long said anyone with a li-brary card can use Freegal to download free music or Zinio to look at a digital version of a magazine. In addition to more than 15,000 titles available from 3M and Over-Drive, Associate Director of Support Services Rochelle Logan said: “We also have over a half million music tracks available via Freegal, the Sony catalog. We have e-magazines through Zinio with more than 160 titles. With Access Video on Demand, we have 11,700 titles. For children, we have Tumblebooks and Sesame Street eBooks.”

The Digital Branch also has a solution for those seeking e-books with long waiting lists or not owned by the library district. Its ‘buy now’ feature allows individuals to purchase those titles, thanks to a partnership with Bilbary, an online e-book store that offers more than 430,000 titles.

According to the library district, the in-clusion of Bilbary in its e-content mix is part of the overall approach to e-con-tent ownership, which bypasses some larger publishers’ policies that limit li-braries to licensing e-books or buying them at inflated prices.

The DCL To Go app gives library cardholders the ability to access their account, check out a book, search the library’s catalog, ask a question or find an event.

While all this talk about e-content may be overwhelming for some, rest assured that Douglas County Libraries still offers hard-copy versions of books, newspapers and magazines. In fact, e-content is only 4.75 percent of the overall circulation, according to Logan.

And children certainly aren’t forgotten. Long said the facility hosts 17 story times a week, including family story times at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10:15 a.m. on Saturdays that are great for working parents. It also has programs for children who struggle with reading, Bark for Books and Reading Buddies, as well as two book clubs called Animal Tales and Horse Tales where the group members read the books aloud together.

For teens, the Parker branch has a Teen Library Council “where teens can get volunteer hours and help us plan great events like last year’s Zombie Murder Mystery for teens or the annual Fall Fest open to all ages,” Long said.

The library also helps business owners with its free BizInfo ser-vice, through which business librarians provide research, such as market research, information on competitors or demograph-ics, to help them succeed.

“Our goal is for community members of all ages to be able to find something they love at their local library,” Long added.

Parker area medical providers and facilities, in-cluding two state-of-the-art hospitals, continue to improve and enhance the care they offer the com-munity.

Since opening in 2003 and 2004, respectively, Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree and Parker Ad-ventist Hospital in Parker have responded to the South Metro Denver area’s growing need for easily accessible, high-quality, full-service health care.

When they opened, both hospitals provided Level III Emergency Trauma Centers, full-service surgi-cal suites, women’s and children’s services, car-diac services and full diagnostic imaging services.

In recent years, they both have added more state-of-the-art technologies, including robotic tech-niques that enhance patient care. For example, Sky Ridge can bring a neurologist, via a robotic computer screen, directly into a patient’s room or emergency room 24/7 to quickly assess signs and symptoms of stroke. And Parker Adventist is the first hospital in the Rocky Mountain Re-gion to use the RenaissanceTM Guided Spine Surgery system, which enhances a surgeon’s precision and capabilities during surgery.

One of the newest additions at Parker Adventist Hospital is a $9 million, 10,200-square-foot Radiation/Oncology Center that is expected to open in December 2013 as the first phase of a planned cancer center on the 40-acre hospital site at E-470 and Parker Road, said Director of Imaging Connie Wood.

“This will serve our community very well,” Wood said, noting that patients who need radiation therapy are currently sent to other facilities in the Denver area, often driving miles for treatment. “This is a community need, and Parker Adventist is responding to that need.”

The Parker facility also is spreading its wings with a $20.5 million expansion to the Centura Health network’s Southlands location at E-470 and Smoky Hill Road. Scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2014, the care provided through this “health neighbor-hood” concept will be closely coordinated with Parker Adventist, which is 10 minutes away. The expanded location will offer a free-standing ER, outpatient imaging, lab and rehabilitation ser-vices, as well as an expanded physician presence providing fam-ily practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN care.

“As our community grows and health care becomes increas-ingly complex, Parker Hospital is continually adding specialty programs that provide the highest level of care to our patients,” said Morre Dean, CEO of Parker Adventist Hospital. “Providing excellent clinical care is an absolute must, but to deliver that care

with compassion and warmth is what makes our hospital truly exceptional.”

At Sky Ridge Medical Center, a $109 million expansion is under-way to add 90 beds, a women’s center, a new medical office build-ing, additional spine/ortho operating rooms and a 1,000-space parking structure on its 57 acres at I-25 and Ridgegate Parkway.

The expansion at the HealthONE facility, expected to be com-pleted by the fall of 2014, will make Sky Ridge the largest wom-en’s hospital in the state, bring its total number of beds to 276 and employees to about 1,400, said Linda Watson, Director of Marketing and Public Affairs.

The hospitals aren’t the only medical facilities expanding to ac-commodate the area’s growth and growing needs.

Kaiser Permanente is expected to open a 275,000-square-foot, multiple-specialty center at 10240 Park Meadows Drive at the end of 2013, which will relieve Douglas County residents of a drive to its Denver specialty facility when they need to see a spe-cialist, such as a cardiologist or dermatologist, said Amy Whited of Kaiser Permanente Media Relations.

The center is being built to accommodate the growth south of Denver, she said, adding that it will be the third specialty center in the metro area. Kaiser, the state’s largest nonprofit health plan, also has a primary care-focused office in Parker, which it opened at 10168 Parkglenn Drive in 2009.

with a small office in Aurora. It added an office in Centennial in 1994 and an office in the Alpine Building at Parker Adventist in 2004.

“We were one of the first tenants in that building,” said Elaine Hehemann, Director of Communications for Advanced Pediatric Associates. “It’s really a convenient location, with proximity to X-ray and other hospital services.”

The practice has a “growing patient base” of about 10,000 fami-lies across the three office locations, Hehemann said, noting that “we have families that have been with us for generations. Our Parker staff truly enjoys being part of the Douglas County com-munity.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Parker has a number of new facilities to care for the area’s aging populations, including Life Care Center at Stonegate and Parker Assisted Living by Morn-ingStar, both of which opened in 2012.

Residents with emotional, mental health or substance abuse is-sues don’t have to travel far to get help. Arapahoe/Douglas Men-tal Health Network opened its new location at 10350 S. Drans-feldt Road in Parker in the fall of 2012, expanding the services available to residents of the surrounding community.
