NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE2

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experi-ence of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic com-mitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the con-ference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in pro-gram history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distrib-uted to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excel-lence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excel-lence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The Col-lege of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so hon-ored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion's Division III, the NCAC features championship com-petition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The

12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III confer-ence, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and wom-en’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the con-ference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common alle-giance to academic qual-ity and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Mason Espinosa,

DENISON SELECTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 30TH WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON

CLEVELAND -- Denison narrowly emerged as the preseason favorite in balloting by North Coast Athletic Conference women’s soccer coaches in the 2013 preseason poll.

The Big Red, who are seeking their first NCAC title since 2009, earned two of nine possible first-place votes cast by league coaches, but garnered enough second- and third-place votes to top the poll with 68 points. Wittenberg, the defending NCAC champions, earned three first-place votes and finished two points behind Denison in the poll with 66 points, while Wooster claimed one first-place vote and rounded out the top three in third with 63 points. DePauw, which won the 2012 NCAC Tournament and automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, also earned two first-place votes and finished fourth with 55 points, while Allegheny rounded out the top five in fifth-place with 51 points and the final first-place vote. Kenyon totaled 41 points to finish sixth in the poll, followed by Ohio Wesleyan (32), Hiram (18) and Oberlin (11).

Denison will again enter competition this fall under the direction of head coach Gail Murphy. In 16 seasons at the helm of the Big Red women’s soccer program, Murphy has posted an impressive record of 223-79-27 (.719), including six NCAC championships and 12 appearances in the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Big Red return their top two scorers from a year ago in senior Jocelyn Festle (Park Ridge, IL/Loyola Academy) and sophomore Andrea Witte (Utica, OH/Northridge) and also welcome back senior netminder Andrea Karl (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) to bolster the defensive unit. Festle led DU in scoring a year ago with 14 points on six goals and two assists, while Witte, the 2012 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, totaled 11 points after netting four goals and dishing out three assists. Karl, who will assume the starting role in goal for the Big Red for the fourth year in a row, is coming off a strong 2012 campaign in which she allowed just 20 goals and secured 55 saves in 1,707 minutes for a goals-against-average of 1.05.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE17

ALL-DECADE TEAMOhio Wesleyan’s Sarah Wall and Wittenberg’s Jamie McIntyre top the list of former student-athletes named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary All-Decade women’s soccer team. Wall and McIntyre are the only players in the past decade to win multiple Player of the Year honors with Wall capturing the offensive award three years in a row (2003, ‘04 & ‘05) and McIntyre earning the defensive award in 2004 and ‘05.

Wall , who entered the last decade fresh off of OWU’s 2002 NCAA Div. III national title, racked up impressive numbers her next three years of competition, as she totaled 143 points on 53 goals and 37 assists. She still owns the NCAC’s career record for assists with 53 and was a key contributor to numerous NCAC team records held by Ohio Wesleyan, including goals in a season (90 in 2002), victories in a season (24 in 2002), overall winning streak (60 from 2001-03), winning streak in NCAC games (29 from 2000-03) and overall unbeaten streak (60 from 2001-03). Wall still remains the only women’s soccer player in league history to earn four-straight Offensive Player of the Year awards as she was also bestowed the honor in 2002.

McIntyre also logged her career in the early part of last decade, anchoring Wittenberg’s defensive unit from 2003 to 2006. In four seasons on Wittenberg’s back line, McIntyre and the Tigers posted an overall record of 48-22-11, including the program’s first NCAC Tournament championship in 2006. After earning the 2006 NCAC Tournament title, Wittenberg qualified for the NCAA Div. III Tournament for the first time in program history where. The Tigers knocked off Otterbein, 2-1, in the opening round before being eliminated by NCAC-foe Denison in the second round via penalty kicks after the two squads played to a 0-0 tie. McIntyre, an NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region first-team selection in 2006, spent the majority of her career defending the opposing teams’ top offensive player, but was also able to add some offensive production herself with four career assists.

In addition, 2008 OWU graduate Michelle Corbett also stood out on the list of 17 student-athletes named to the All-Decade team as she is the only player on the list to earn All-NCAC first-team honors four years in a row in the decade.

The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators.

Parity was the name of the game in women’s soccer during the last decade as six different teams were crowned NCAC champions, led by Denison which secured outright titles in 2005, ‘08 and ‘09. Allegheny opened the decade by earning the title in 2003, followed by Ohio Wesleyan in ‘04, Kenyon in ‘06, Wittenberg in ‘07, Wooster in ‘10, a tie between Allegheny and Ohio Wesleyan in ‘11 and Wittenberg’s outright title in 2012.
