Mountaineer Story Lines...Career Benchmark In her 19th season as a head coach, Nikki Izzo-Brown eclipsed the 250-career victory mark with a 4-0 win over Central Michigan on Aug. 30 at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown. She led the Mountaineers to their 250th program victory with a 1-0 win over Baylor in the Big 12 Soccer Championship semifinals on Nov. 8. She has been named conference coach of the year on four occasions (2001, 2002, 2012, 2013) and regional coach of the year three times (2000, 2002, 2007).

Scoring Silva Frances Silva, the unanimous Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year selection, found the scoring touch in 2013, as the senior forward from Overland Park, Kan., has tallied at least one point in 18 of 21 matches. Silva has scored nine goals in the Mountaineers’ last nine matches and has tallied a program single-season record 13 assists for 43 points (15 G, 13 A), the single-season record for a WVU senior. This is the first year she has reached double-figure totals in goals and assists. The 15 goals are a career single-season record and rank No. 4 in program history. She is tied with Ashley Banks (2007) for the senior single-season goal record. Silva ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference in points, assists and goals; she ranks No. 6, No. 7 and No. 18 in the NCAA in the same categories. Silva shows 38 career goals and ranks No. 4 in the WVU record book; Chrissie Abbott (2000-03) holds the record at 53. With 98 career points, she ranks No. 4 in the record book. Abbot owns the record with 125 points.

Silva’s Touch vs. the Top 10 Over the course of her four-year career, Frances Silva has tallied six career goals against top-10 opponents, including scores vs. No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Penn State and No. 7 Duke this season. Silva also has scored against No. 1 Stanford (2012), No. 7 Oklahoma State (2012) and No. 8 Marquette (2011).

Dishing it Out Frances Silva has set-up 13 of WVU’s 47 goals this season, including three in the Mountaineers’ 4-1 win over Wright State on Sept. 22. The three assists matched a WVU single-game record and pushed her game point total to five (1 G, 3 A), the 12th-best single-game total in program history. Silva’s 13 assists are a WVU single-season record and rank No. 7 nationally. Her assist total eclipses her previous season-best showing (4, 2011) by nine. Her career assist total stands at 22, and she ranks No. 7 in the record book.

Hometown Performance Frances Silva used the hometown crowd to her advantage in Kansas City, scoring three goals, including two game-winners, in the Mountaineers’ Big 12 Soccer Championship run. The Overland Park, Kan., native opened the team’s championship scoring in the 18th minute of the Mountaineers’ Nov. 6. match against Kansas, connecting on a free kick that gave WVU a lead it would never relinquish. She added her second goal eight minutes later, converting her third PK of the season. WVU won, 3-0. Silva netted the match’s lone goal against Baylor on Nov. 8. After she was taken down from behind just outside the box, Silva converted on a free kick from 21-yards out in the 51st minute. She finished with a championship-best six points (3 G) and was named Offensive MVP.

Championship Scoring Touch Frances Silva’s three goals at the 2013 Big 12 Soccer Championship pushed her career goal total in conference championships to six, a WVU program record. Silva is the second Mountaineer to tally a goal in three different tournaments; Blake Miller (2008-11) also scored five goals in three tournaments. Chrissie Abbott (2000-03) scored five goals in two tournaments.

Silva Shoots, Scores x 2 Frances Silva put forth her second two-goal performance of the season on Nov. 6, as she tallied the team’s first two scores en route to a 3-0 win over Kansas in the Big 12 Soccer Championship quarterfinals. Silva scored off a free kick in the 18th minute and then connected on a penalty kick eight minutes later. It was the sixth two-goal performance of her career. Silva completed her first two-goal performance of the season on Oct. 4, as she notched both goals in WVU’s 2-1 victory over Texas in Morgantown. She earned Disney Soccer/NSCAA and Big 12 Player of the Week honors for her four-point performance.

Saving the Best For Last Taking her senior leadership role to heart, Frances Silva has been lights out in her fourth year at WVU, scoring 15 goals, a senior single-season record, and adding 13 assists, a program best single-season mark. Big 12 Champions! The Mountaineers won their first Big 12 Soccer Championship title with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Nov. 10, at Swope Soccer Village, in Kansas City, Mo. Top-seeded WVU survived a first-half offensive storm from the sixth-seeded Cowgirls, with senior goalkeeper Sara Keane making five saves in the first 45 minutes; she went on to make a career-high nine stops. The title is the first for any WVU team at a Big 12 Conference championship. It is the program’s fourth conference championship title and third in four years. Including its back-to-back Big 12 regular-season titles, WVU has secured three Big 12 championships in two seasons. A midfield free kick from redshirt-freshman Carly Black sparked WVU’s chance in the 71st minute. She lofted the ball toward the far right post, and freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence chased it down before sending a high kick just above the head and through the outstretched hands of OSU’s Michaela Ongaro for the first game-winner of her WVU career. Keane’s shutout was her third in as many games, ninth of the season and 26th of her career. Both teams registered 20 shots, with OSU earning a 9-4 advantage in shots on-goal. The Cowgirls also registered a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. With the win, WVU earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Championships.

All-Tournament Recognition Following their 1-0 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Soccer Championship Final, four Mountaineers garnered All-Big 12 Tournament Team honors, the first in program history. Senior forward Frances Silva was named the Offensive MVP, while freshman defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named Defensive MVP. Senior goalkeeper Sara Keane and freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence also were named to the squad.

The Big 12’s Best The Mountaineers swept the 2013 Big 12 Conference postseason awards, with Frances Silva earning the Offensive Player of the Year honor as a unanimous selection, while Kadeisha Buchanan was named the Defender and Newcomer of the Year. Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown earned her second straight Big 12 Coach of the Year honor. WVU is the first program to win the offensive and defensive player of the year awards in the same season. Prior to the defensive recognition’s debut in 2007, only Colorado (2003) had swept the individual honors outright. Silva is the fifth Mountaineer to earn an offensive player of the year award and the first since 2007. Buchanan’s defender of the year award is the second straight honor for a Mountaineer, as Bry McCarthy was honored in 2012. She is the team’s fourth newcomer of the year honoree and first since 2011. Izzo-Brown’s honor is the fourth of her career. Silva, Buchanan, Kate Schwindel and Ashley Lawrence were named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while Amanda Hill was named to the second team. Buchanan, Lawrence and Carly Black were named to the All-Big 12 Newcomer Team. The eight All-Big 12 selections were a conference-best total.

First-Time Foes WVU faced four new opponents this fall and finished with a 2-1-1 record. The Mountaineers met Duke [1-1/T (2OT)] on Sept. 6 , North Carolina (2-4/L) on Sept. 8, Eastern Kentucky (4-0/W) on Sept. 13 and Wright State (4-1/W) on Sept. 22. In the program’s 18-year existence, WVU has faced 97 different teams.

Offensive Attack The 2013 Mountaineers returned 88 percent of their goal scoring from a year ago, as underclassmen accounted for 30 of the team’s 34 goals. Twenty of the team’s 34 goals came from the forward duo of Frances Silva (11) and Kate Schwindel (9).

Returning Defenders Sara Keane returned after registering 17 shutouts over the past two seasons. Center back Leah Emaus and outside back Jess Crowder also returned – both first-time starters a year ago.

2013 Preseason Big 12 Poll and Preseason All-Big 12 Team WVU was tabbed the top squad in the 2013 Big 12 Preseason Poll. After going undefeated in their inaugural Big 12 season, the Mountaineers tallied seven of the nine first-place votes. Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas completed the top five. The Mountaineers headlined the 2013 preseason All-Big 12 Team, garnering a conference-best five selections: Frances Silva, Kate Schwindel, Kara Blosser, Ashley Lawrence and Jess Crowder.

Fantastic Freshmen Among coach Nikki Izzo-Brown’s freshman class is Canadian National Team member Kadeisha Buchanan. Buchanan came to Morgantown after competing with the Canada U20 team in Denmark in July. Fellow Canadian Ashley Lawrence was named to the Canadian U20 team but did not make the trip to Denmark. Bryce Banuelos came to Morgantown after claiming the 2013 U18 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship with Team Chicago Academy-Botafogo. Banuelos and company defeated fellow Mountaineer freshman Daniela Neves and the Virginia Heat Blue, 2-1, in overtime for the title.

Challenging Competition The 2013 West Virginia women’s soccer schedule was a grueling one, as the squad faced seven teams that appeared in the 2012 NCAA Tournament – Baylor, Central Michigan, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas Tech.
