GeorgiaAvenuehasbeenprimerealestateinMaconformanyyears,andinthemid-1800s,itwasnodifferent.Mr.AsherAyers,oneofMacon’sprominentcitizens,boughtthelandonwhichthecurrenthomeat1120GeorgiaAve.standsin1877.Mr.AyerswasalawyeratthefirmofR.K.Hines(advertisementfromtheAugust28,1878issueofTheTelegraphpicturedright).Whileworkingatthefirm,hewouldundertakepublicandprivateaccounts,settlementsofpartnershipaffairs,receiverships,andconfidentialbusinessofallkinds.HeandtheotherassociatesthatworkedatthefirmtraveledacrossMiddleandSouthwestGeorgiatohelployal,payingcustomers.
AyerslaterbecameChiefDeputyUnitedStatesMarshalfortheSouthernDistrictofGeorgia.HeservedinthisroleforsevenyearsandwaswidelyknownasthechampiongunshotofGeorgia.EveryonethatcameintocontactwithMr.Ayersseemedtoenjoyhispresence,anditwasoncestatedthatheneverhadanenemy.Unfortunately,Mr.Ayerslivedashortlife,andin1897hepassedawayattheageof37.Heleftbehindawife,twochildren,andanagedmother,whooccupiedtheAyersmansiononthecornerofWalnutandThirdStreets.
AyersoriginallyboughtthelotoflandonGeorgiaAvenueasaninvestment.Hepaid$1,100forthelotandsolditin1881for$2,250.ThelotstayedemptyuntilWilliamLeeEllis,thechairmanofpublicworksinMacon,purchaseditin1892andthehomewasconstructedonthelot.Thelotwasoriginallyreferencedas300GeorgiaAve.until1949whenthepostofficeupdatedtheaddressesofthearea.Ellislivedinthehouseforeightyearsandthensoldit.Thehousethenwentthroughseveralownersuntil1918whenMr.RichardS.Thorpeboughtthehousefor$13,200.

clothingstore(picturedabove)at567CherrySt.in1908.Itwasaclothingstoreformenandboysandhadawomen’ssalonupstairs.AnadvertisementforthestorefromtheOctober11,1913issueofTheTelegraphispicturedright.Asabusinessman,Mr.ThorpewasactiveincivicaffairsandreligiousworkinMaconsociety.HealwaysassistedinprojectsthatwouldhelpcreateabetterMacon.Mr.RichardThorpepassedawayin1929andwassurvivedbyhisfoursons:VirgilS.Thorpe,CecilA.Thorpe,J.(Mack)HarrisThorpe,andWarrenThorpe.AfterRichard’sdeath,thehousewenttoCecilandWarren.

WarrenThorpeandhiswifeMargarethadonedaughter,KatherineThorpe.TheyallsharedthehousewithMr.Cecilandseemedtomakeaveryhappyfamily.KatherinemarriedJohnDennis(picturedleft).WimberlyTreadwellandMarionDischer,granddaughtersofWarrenandMargaret,recallgoingovertothehomeafterschoolandeatingMargaret’sdelicioussnacks.Margarethadanopen-doorpolicy;anyonewaswelcomedintothehome.Shefrequentlyhadmembersofthecommunityovertoplaybridge.
WarrenbroughtthemoneyintothehomewhileMargaretranthehouseholdandwasveryactiveinthecommunity.Shehadabachelor’sdegreefromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley.
Sheco-authoredtwobooksandwasacontributortospecializedpublications.ShewasthefirstpresidentoftheJuniorLeagueofMaconandwasamemberoftheMaconWritersClub,theMaconHistoryClub,theMaryHammondWashingtonChapteroftheDaughtersoftheAmericanRevolution,andtheKappaAlphaThetaSorority.
WarrenThorpepassedawayin1974,andKatherinepassedawaytwoyearslater.MargarethelpedtakecareofKatherine’schildren,Wimberly,Marion,and(little)Warren.MargaretstayedintheGeorgiaAvenuehomeuntil1975whenshemovedtoMagnoliaManor.
OscarBusboomboughtthehomeandlivedtherewithhisfamilyuntilthe1990s.ThehomesawtwomorefamiliesbeforeitwasrecentlypurchasedbyDavidandBrookeMerrill,thecurrentowners.Thearchitectureofthehouseismagnificentbothinsideandout.ThehomeisQueenAnnewithEasternStickStyledetail,whichputsemphasisonasymmetricalcompositionanddecorative“stickwork.”Theasymmetricstyleisprominentinsideandoutsideofthehome.Thehousealsoexhibitsappliedornamentationintheformofwoodboardsontheexteriorsurfacesthatareintendedtoexpresstheinnerstructureofthebuilding.Theoriginalfrontdoorsofthehomearethefocalpointofthearchitecture.Theornatewoodworkmakesthesedoorsagreatentrywayintothewonderfulfinishesinsidethehome.

SusanRazahasbeendoingdecorativeandfauxpaintfinishes,murals,furniture,andfloorsinMaconandtheCentralGeorgiaareafor12years.ShehasparticipatedinsixDecorators’Showhouses,andherworkhasappearedinMacon MagazineandThe Telegraph.Atthistime,Susanisbranchingoutandbringingherpastdesignexperienceintothepresentwithplanstododesignworkforclientele.Withherexperienceindraftingfordemolition/reconstruction,designingtextiles,decorativepaintingandcolorworkaswellasherdegreeininteriordesign,shewillcreateuniquespacesthatreflectthefeelherclientsintendandthattheywillenjoylivingandentertainingin.
ThisbeautifulVictorianhomeoflargespacesinvitesaneclectictreatmentbasedinthetraditional.Susanseestheexpanseofwallspaceasanopportunitytodisplaycolorfulartworkwithaccentsofchinoiserietocreateadiversebackdropandmood.Susantreatedthefloorwithaclassicdiamondpatternalternatingwiththeexistingheartpinetoretaintheflowofheartpinethroughoutthehouse.Akoifishswirlsaroundthenewelpost.Thediamondpatterniscompletedwithanexpressoborderstenciledwithametallicpattern.Theaccentwallistexturedwithmetallictoenrichthelongspace.ThefireplaceinKatherineWalden’sspaceusesacombinationofcolorsandmarblingtoenhancetheclassicfeeloftheroom.

ValorieLewislandedherfirstdecoratingjobwhilestandinginlineatapaintcounterandboldlytellingthestoreownerthatheneededtohireher.Thatwasover25yearsago,andsincethen,countlesspeoplehaverealizedthatthey,too,areinneedofhertalents.Valorie’scustomershavefoundthatshenotonlyproducesapolished,uniquelook,butalsomakeswhatcanbeastressfulprocessfunandenjoyable.
ValorieworksatWarno-CamPaintCo.withBenjiLewis,herhusbandof17years.SheandBenjihaveworkedtogetherfortheentiretyoftheirmarriagetoprovideMaconwithexceptionalpaint,wallpaper,blindsand
fabric.ShehasalsooperatedBreezyHillInteriors,aninteriordesignandconsultingcompany,since1995andspecializesinresidentialandcommercialdesign.ThisisValorie’sfifthShowhouse.
Inrecentyears,ValoriehasbecomeverymuchinvolvedwithRoomsFromTheHeart,anon-profitorganizationthatprovidesbedroommakeoversandhomerepairsforchildrenwhoareseriouslyill.Asaboardmemberandasacontributingdesigner,Valorieenjoysworkingcloselywiththeseamazingchildrenandtheirfamiliestoprovidecheerful,restfulandtherapeuticdreamrooms.Shefindsthisvolunteerworktobeimmenselyrewardingandinspiring.
Whensheisnotworkingtomakeherclients’homesmorebeautiful,Valoriecanusuallybefoundonher20-acrefarminJonesCounty,BreezyHill.Theresheenjoysgardening,tendingherducks,chickens,goatsandhorses,playingwithhersixgrandchildrenandentertainingfriendsandfamilyinherrenovatedfarmhouse.

ShaunaDavisgraduatedfromWestVirginiaUniversityin1982withaBSHEininteriordesign.SheisanAlliedmemberoftheAmericanSocietyofInteriorDesignersandhasownedherowninteriordesignfirmfor22years.ShaunahasparticipatedineightHistoricMaconShowhousesandhasdecoratedninehomesfortheBuilders’ParadeofHomesofMiddleGeorgia.Shaunawasaninstructorofinteriordesignfor14yearsintheContinuingEducationdepartmentofMaconStateCollege.Innovember2001,shewasthesoleinteriordesignerfortheSouthernLivingShowcaseHomebuiltbyCraigChalkley.
Herdesignfirmoffersafullrangeofcommercialandresidentialdesignservices.HerresidentialworkhasbeenfeaturedinMacon MagazineandSouthern Living.ShaunawasfeaturedinSpectacular Homes of Georgiain2006.Thisbookshowcasestheworkofthetop50interiordesignersfromalloverthestateofGeorgia.ShaunahasrecentlyopenedaretailboothinYesterday’sAntiqueMarketwhereyoumayviewmoreofherdesignwork.
