H eroes come in all shapes and sizes — and this year the Harvest Festival is celebrating them all.

The theme for the 88th annual Arvada Harvest Festival beginning Friday, Sept. 6, is “Honoring America’s Heroes.”

“Certainly what comes to mind is military members, veterans and their families, but it’s everyone from the schoolteacher that made a difference to a fi rst responder that saves a life,” said Harvest Festival producer Linda “Ole” Fer-guson. “It’s all of those individuals that went above and beyond to make a positive differ-ence.”

Choosing this year’s theme was an easy de-cision.

“It inspires in everyone a connection be-cause everyone knows a hero,” Ferguson said. “And hopefully everyone aspires to be a hero to someone else.”

The Arvada Harvest Festival is the second-longest running event in Colorado and was hosted for the fi rst time by the Chamber of Commerce in 1925 to celebrate the paving of Grandview Avenue in what is now Olde Town Arvada.

Grandview Avenue was the fi rst paved road to connect the Arvada farming community to downtown Denver.

In 1966, the Arvada Junior Chamber, or Jay-cees, took over the planning of the event.

Though the times have changed since its in-ception and the festival no longer focuses on connecting farmland to the capital city, one as-pect remains the same — community.

“The biggest thing is community,” said Chairman of the Harvest Festival Committee

Renee Nelson. “Why do we have community? What’s important in the community? It’s the people.”

In addition to the annual fun times at the festival, such as the Kids’ Zone, entertainment, carnival rides and food, the Harvest Festival is also taking time to honor America’s heroes in the parade and throughout the festival.

Throughout the weekend, heroes of all kinds will be honored with a certifi cate and a gift.

Some heroes being recognized are military members and fi rst responders, volunteers that make sure children gets toys at Christmas, one of the last remaining rescue dogs from 9/11 who currently has cancer and possibly a survi-vor of the Aurora theater shooting.

“We want to acknowledge people who over-come and she’s a hero in her own right,” Nel-son said.

“It’s a real wide variety of people. That’s what is really cool when we get information from people and we’re like ‘Oh my gosh, look what this person did.’ It’s stuff that people for-get because the people aren’t in the spotlight.”

As part of honoring America’s heroes, the festival committee is hosting an invitation-on-ly “Heroes Dinner” Friday evening as well as in-viting the public to honor their personal heroes through the “Wall of Honor.”

Attendees will have chance to share heroes’ photos, stories on panels

The Arvada Harvest Festival is starting a new tradition this year of celebrating America’s heroes — the Wall of

Honor.The Wall of Honor is a group of

panels, which will be guarded by volunteer veterans with Arvada’s American Legion Post 161, where residents can post photos and text about their own personal heroes during the festival.

“When I was able to secure KYGO as our major sponsor, I knew they had an online Wall of Honor, in fact I posted something about my own son, who is a marine, there,” said Harvest Festival producer Linda “Ole” Ferguson.

“I thought, wouldn’t it be cool and meaningful to create a physical Wall of Honor where people can actually post things and festival attendees could come and read about heroes in their own community.”

The Wall of Honor became a reality when festival sponsor Home Depot offered to build the panels; there are five 4.5-feet-by-6-feet panels made of corkboard that will be elevated so they are at a level

where a 5-year-old could post or a 65-year-old can post and read about local heroes, Ferguson said.

While many posts may be about military members and veterans, Ferguson said attendees can post about anyone they fi nd heroic.

“They can post about their grandfather, their father, their g randmother, their aunt, their sister, their son, their daughter — who e ve r is a hero, any type of hero,” Ferguson said.

“If someone posts a picture of a librarian who has been serving at the school library for the past 45 years, then yay, she got those kids to read. She’s a hero.”

To post about a hero, residents must bring their posting — a photo, text or both — on a piece of paper no larger than half a sheet of standard paper, 8.5-inches-by-11-inches, that is laminated.

Following the festival, KYGO may take the panels with them as they travel to different events so

more people can post about their heroes — but the panels will be back at the Harvest Festival next year and for years to come as a new festival tradition.

The panels will be unveiled to the public d u r i n g t h e opening night concert at 6:30 p.m. Fr iday, Sept . 6 , at McIlvoy Park, 7200 Ralston Road and will then be at the American

Legion booth in the midway throughout the weekend.

T he Arvada Harvest Festival provides fun for the whole family, but there is a spe-cial section and events just

for children.The Kids’ Zone, which features a

variety of activities, games and dem-onstrations for children, is open noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the south end of McIlvoy Park, 7200 Ralston Road.

“It’s full of fun, exciting activi-ties for kids to see,” said Kids’ Zone chairperson and family program di-rector at the Duncan YMCA.

“It’s time to hang out with friends. The kids are busy having fun and the parents are able to check out classes. Kids are also able to try things out to see if it’s the right ac-tivity for them. And everything is free.”

O r g a n i z a t io n s will be doing dem-onstrations of their classes 1-3 p.m. in the Kids’ Zone. Or-ganizations include SEO Martial Arts, 5280 Gymnastics, YMCA Zumba, TI-GA R S Gy m nas -tics and the Rocky Mountain School of Dance.

In addition to demonstrations and clinics, the Kids’ Zone also features a slew of activities and games, includ-ing YMCA fi tness ac-tivities, a woodwork-ing clinic with Home Depot, an infl atable boot camp from Big Time Trampoline, bounce houses, a tractor display and visits with llamas and alpacas.

New this year, following the dem-onstrations, children can participate in a giant Jenga competition at 3 p.m. Also new this year is an activi-ty that ties in with the theme, “Hon-oring America’s Heroes,” hosted by the nonprofi t One World Heart Proj-ect in the Kids’ Zone at 1 p.m. Sun-day, Sept. 8.

“Colorado Credit Union is bring-

ing in the nonprofit One World Heart Project, which provides curric-ulum to teach kiddos in all kinds of different settings qualities like com-passion, loyalty, honesty and integ-rity,” said Harvest Festival producer Linda “Ole” Ferguson.

The activities, “Hero Lessons for Little Ones,” include a variety of craft projects for children to do that can teach them about positive quali-ties and serve as a reminder they can take home with them to live with such qualities.

“They can put them in their room or on the refrigerator or wherever to remind themselves during the year

that these are the qualities that I want to live my life by so that I can be a hero to someone,” Ferguson said.

“Every hero you know is compas-sionate, is honest and loyal and lives with integrity — all of those differ-ent kinds of qualities. You won’t fi nd a hero without those qualities. If you want to grow up and be a hero, you have to live these qualities now and throughout your life.”

The Kids’ Zone and all of its activ-ities are open to children of all ages.

Titus, Ted’s oldest son, joined the business is 1990. He served as an apprentice with an electrical contrac-tor, which ultimately allowed him to

obtain his Master Electrician License. He also served as an apprentice in Heating & Air Conditioning, where he later obtained his Master HVAC License. He then spent time working with a General Contractor, learning all phases of home construction & remod-eling including; roofing, siding, gut-ters, windows, decks, etc. In 2007 he then acquired his General Contractor

License, which was the springboard for Aaark’s most recent expansion into the home improvement & remodel busi-ness.

Levi, Ted’s youngest son, joined the business in 1998. Throughout his years with the company Levi has been involved in various different aspects of the business including; HVAC instal-lation & service, phone reception and dispatching. He is currently an outside sales representative, project coordinator & manager and office/administrative manager.

Annual 9/11 Remembrance Run features four distances in support of Homefront Heroes

T his year’s 9/11 Remembrance Run will not only support

America’s military heroes, but it will also feature lo-cal heroes.

The sixth annual 9/11 Remembrance Run — America Goes the Dis-tance begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in Olde Town Square and features three timed races — a 5K, a 10K and a half mara-thon — a family-friendly 5K run and walk and an untimed 10-mile training course.

Each distance begins in Olde Time Square and end in McIlvoy Park.

The annual run sup-ports the local nonprofi t Homefront Heroes, which sends materials and care packages to troops sta-tioned overseas, helps military families in need while their loved ones are deployed, helps return-ing soldiers and veterans receive the services and benefits they need, and provides a variety of other services.

While the run supports some of America’s heroes, this year’s run will feature a variety of heroes, all starting their morning off

with a run around Arvada.About 25 Chief’s Se-

lects from the U.S. Navy stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora will be running the 5K and will be joined by a group of visually impaired run-ners.

“A group of visually-impaired runners and their guide runners are going to do the run,” said director of Homefront Heroes Linda “Ole” Fer-guson. “I think that’s he-roic because it’s a `Rising to the challenge’ kind of heroism and I think that’s really cool.”

The members of the Navy will be running in cadence, which is quite an amazing sight and sound, Ferguson said.

All runners in all dis-tances will fi rst run down the Harvest Festival pa-rade route before the pa-rade begins.

“Last year was the fi rst year we brought the run-ners up along the parade route and it worked out beautifully,” Ferguson said. “It seemed the pa-rade watchers liked watch-ing and cheering on the runners before the parade started.”

H eroes can be found anywhere — even fl ying high.

The focus of this year’s Harvest Festival RC Model Air

Show, hosted by the Arvada Associated Modelers, is “Heroes of the Sky” and will focus on warbirds and military aircraft and the heroes that fl ew them, said Joe Pirozzoli, the Arvada Associated Modelers director of public relations.

The air show will feature about 30 pi-lots — including several nationally recog-nized — fl ying about 50 different planes, including giant scale models, replica war-birds, real turbine jets, helicopters and the “Wicked Witch” on a fl ying broom.

The Arvada Associated Modelers, a chartered club of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, hosts the annual air show as a way to give back to the city in celebra-tion of its commitment to and partner-ship to create the airpark and to add to the festivities of the Harvest Festival weekend, Pirozzoli said.

The air park is located on city-owned land, but was fully built and is main-tained through private funds.

“The perception most people have is the really tiny things you can fl y in your backyard, but model airplanes are so much more than that,” he said. “Scale aircraft are a depiction of real airplanes in the 30 to 40 percent range, meaning they’re a third to almost have the size and so much more than what people’s percep-tion is.”

During the show, he said, attendees will see stunts that can’t be seen with real, full-size aircraft.

“Model aircrafts can do so much more than real aircrafts because they’re lighter

and can withstand higher G-forces and stresses than real aircraft because the pilot isn’t sitting inside them. They can do far more acrobatically and they’re spectacu-lar to watch.”

There will also be a candy drop from one of the planes during the show for chil-dren to get some treats from the runway.

In addition to seeing top-notch pilots, such as nationally recognized and spon-sored Mark Dennis and celebrity pilot Brian O’Meara, attendees will also have a chance to try their hand at fl ying a model airplane themselves with the You Can Fly Too program.

“The You Can Fly Too program has be-come so popular that this year we’re run-

ning it concurrently with the show at the west fi eld,” Pirozzoli said. “It will give us more time and we’ll be able to run more people through it.”

Attendees can try their hand at fl ying 1-5 p.m. and anyone old enough to hold a transmitter is welcome to give it a try.

“We want to encourage boy and girls of all ages to try it,” Pirozzoli said. “We want to encourage ladies and gentlemen that have an interest too, so if you want to come out and fl y, come out a fl y. If your grandfather wants to come out and fl y, have him come out too.”

The air show will also include door prizes, concessions, a candy drop for the children from one of the model air-

planes and a fl y-in by Flight for Life Colo-rado at 2 p.m. This year’s honorary Mas-ter of Ceremonies is Arvada City Council-man-at-Large Bob Fifer.

The air show and all of its activities are free to the public. The show is 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Arvada Air Park, 7608 Highway 93 in Golden; the airpark can be accessed via the Pioneer Sand and Gravel entrance off of Highway 93.

The air show will be at the park’s east fi eld while the You Can Fly Too program runs concurrently at the west fi eld.

Chicken scramble headlines sustainability activities Races, swap, beekeeping and composting demos new to festival By Sara Van Cleve [email protected]

A new event at the Arvada Har-vest Festival returns to Ar-vada’s agricultural roots in a modern way.

For the fi rst time ever, this year’s Har-vest Festival will include a demonstra-tion and activities regarding sustain-ability courtesy of Denver Urban Home-steading.

The sustainability activities include three workshops, including beekeeping and composting, a chicken swap and a chicken scramble, where chicken owners can race their hens for prizes.

For the chicken scramble, chickens will be placed in heats as their owners sign them up and each heat will race for a chance to advance to the next round.

“The races are going to be three min-ute each, so if nobody gets over the fi n-

ish line after three minutes, we’ll call it good and whoever is closest wins,” said Chairperson of the Harvest Festival com-mittee Renee Nelson.

The Harvest Fes-tival, Denver Urban Homesteading and the Colorado Poultry As-sociation have been working together to establish rules for the scramble and to ensure the chickens are kept cool and safe through-out the event.

“We are going to be potentially sanctioned and we’re making sure the health and welfare of the chickens are be-ing taken care of as well,” Nelsons said. We’re getting help from people who know about chickens.”

Though this year’s event is new, the idea of incorporating pets and animals into events is a sort-of throwback to past festivals.

“It’s a whole new endeavor, but this

is the kind of stuff we used to do back in the ’70s,” Nelson said. “We had dif-

ferent things like ‘Pretty Kitty’ and a dog run, we did stuff like that, so we thought how can we start incorporat-ing things we did in the past, but this is all new.”

Registration for the chicken races is free and begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, and the rac-es begin at 11:30 a.m. in McIlvoy Park between the Kids’ Zone and the pavilion.

The winners of each heat will be announced around 12 p.m. and then

the winners will race for a supreme win-ner. Prizes include gift certifi cates and cash prizes, certifi cates and ribbons.

Since hens are legal in Arvada city limits, attendees are welcome to bring their own hens for the scramble. Roost-

ers are not permitted.The sustainability workshops will

happen during the same time as the chicken races. The sustainability work-shops will be from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 8, in the same area of McIl-voy Park.

“It’s all about sustainability,” Nelson said. “We want to give people an idea of what they can do and what can be do-ne, plus you can just have fun with it. Sustainability is becoming so important, anytime we can get the message out is good. It’s all about community and bringing back, giving back and doing.”
