THE AMATEURSTHE TALE OF TWO JIMS2013X
When Colonel George Hampton Young moved from Georgia and built a spectacular antebellum mansion for his bride on the banks of the Tombigbee River, he never could have imagined the meaning it would eventually take on some one hundred and sixty years later as the welcoming home and battleground of Amateurs X.
It is fitting that Colonel Young named the homestead “Waverley” after the main character and title of the first novel of Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Certainly none us need reminding that Waverley is an 1814 historical novel published anonymously as Scott's first venture into prose fiction. It is often regarded as the first historical novel, and it became so popular that Scott's later novels were advertised as being "by the author of Waverley". The Amateurs is characterized by many of the same themes and motifs of Waverley:
Tolerance: Scott was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, ancestry or golf handicap.
Humor: Much like the Amateurs, critics disagree whether Waverley was humorous or not. Many found it dour and uninteresting while others found it a "riot of fun and eccentricity."
Fear of Civil War: The division in the Waverley family had been caused by the English Civil War of the mid-seventeenth century. Fear of civil war is ever-present in Waverley. Could this be the year that the Amateurs takes up arms against the Founding Fathers?
Quixotism: Edward Waverley is like Don Quixote in that his worldview is the result of his reading, an unstructured education consisting of much curious, though ill-arranged and miscellaneous information - similar to the rules of golf used by the Amateurs.
Heroines: The heroines of Waverley have been divided into two types, each representative of an Amateurs X team. The blonde is eminently beautiful, and eminently prudent. Like the passive hero, she suffers in the thick of events but seldom moves them. The brunette, no less beautiful, allows her feelings to dictate to her reason, and seems to symbolize passion itself.
This year's media guide is also a historical novel, with the history of this great competition documented in a form that may very well be described as prose fiction. The record book is "dynamic," and many characters have passed through the pages of this media guide along the way. We remember those competitors who could not be with us this year, and we celebrate our newest characters - Andy Rambo and Jeff Scrugham - as well as returning Amateur Preston Carpenter. They are certain to bring new life and new stories to the pages of this continuing novel.
At the time Scott wrote, Scotland was poised to move away from an era of socially divisive clan warfare to a modern world of literacy and industrial capitalism. In much the same way, this 10th anniversary of the Amateurs marks a time of transition. Who knows where this competition may go from here? Who knows how this novel might end? We look forward to seeing how this year's chapter unfolds on August 23-26 in West Point.

2013 AMATUERS RULES SHEET1. *Rangefinders / GPS Devices – All rangefinders and GPS devices are permitted during competition.2. *Scoring - No aggregate stroke score for a round will be kept by a player. Score shall only be kept as it
relates to a player winning or losing a hole. 3. Handicap Scoring – All players’ course handicaps shall be calculated from the player in the match with
the lowest course handicap.4. *Maximum Score - The “maximum score” for a player on a hole shall be a “net double bogey” as
calculated in accordance with Rule 3. Once a player makes his “maximum score” stroke, he shall pick up his ball regardless if the ball has been holed. If the player’s opponent makes a “maximum score” or better by finishing the hole, the opponent shall win the hole. If each player reaches his “maximum score” by picking his ball prior to finishing the hole, the hole is halved.
5. Modified Alternate Shot Format (Round 1)a. Each player on a team shall hit his own tee shot. After each player has hit his tee shot, the team shall
select one player’s tee shot as the tee shot of the team. The second player whose tee shot was not selected shall hit the second shot using the same ball that his partner teed off with, in its lie as it is found. The third shot shall be hit by the player who teed off and the team shall continue this process of alternating shots, using the same ball in its lie as found for each shot, until the team has holed out.
b. Rule 4 (Maximum Score) is applicable.c. In the event that both players on a team hit their respective ball out of bounds or lose such ball, the
team shall designate what player’s tee shot shall be considered the tee shot of the team and the player whose tee shot is not selected shall proceed under Rule 8 or 10, as applicable.
6. Movement of Ball - Each ball must be played as it lies whether in the fairway or elsewhere unless determined by the Rules Committee that “lift, clean and place” is appropriate because of course conditions.
7. Embedded Ball - A ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. "Closely mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.
8. *Relief for Ball in Water Hazarda. It is a question of fact whether a ball that has not been found after having been struck toward a water
hazard is in the hazard. In the absence of knowledge or virtual certainty that a ball struck toward a water hazard, but not found, is in the hazard, the player must proceed as if the ball is lost in accordance with Rule 10.
b. If a ball is found in a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard (whether the ball lies in water or not), the player may under penalty of one stroke:(i) Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played; or(ii) Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the
margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or
(iii) Drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (A) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (B) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.
6OLD WAVERLY 2013RULES SHEET
Peter Matthews was the lowest handicap player in 2006-2007.
c. All “water hazards” shall be treated as “lateral water hazards” as defined in the Official Rules of Golf.
9. Unplayable Ball - Any player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played;
! orb. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the
spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
! If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to ! proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.
10. *Ball Out of Bounds or Lost Ball - If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must eithera. play a ball, under penalty of one stroke, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball
was last playedor
b. under penalty of two strokes,(i) drop a ball within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than the point where the original ball
last crossed the margin of the out of bounds/tree line, or(ii) drop a ball at any point on a straight line between the point at which the original ball last crossed
the margin of the out of bounds/tree line and the spot from which the original ball was played, with no limit to how far behind the margin of the out of bounds/tree line the ball may be dropped.
! Once a player leaves the spot from which the original ball was played, he must proceed under Rule ! 10(b).
11. *Provisional Ball - If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally. The player must inform his opponent in match play that he intends to play a provisional ball, and he must play it before he or his partner go forward to search for the original ball.
Once a player determines he is going to hit a provision ball, he may not proceed under Rule 10 and must then play his provisional ball if the original ball is not found.
*The rules marked by an asterisk have been instituted by the Rules Committee in the best interest of the 2013 Amateurs and may be different than a comparable rule in previous Amateurs Tournaments or the Official Rules of Golf. Any rule may be changed by the Rules Committee after any round of the competition if it is deemed in the best interests of the 2013 Amateurs to do so by the Rules Committee.

8 OLD WAVERLY 2013
Colonel George Hampton Young moved from Georgia and built a spectacular antebellum mansion for his bride on the banks of the Tombigbee River. Tragically, before the magnificent home was finished, Colonel Hampton’s wife died. But as a man of vision, the Colonel pushed forward and when the homestead was mostly complete in 1852 named it “Waverley,” the main character and title of the first novel of Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Waverley lost great friends and love but persevered to start life anew. Waverley succeeded and so, too, would Colonel Young. One hundred thirty years later, another George living in the Golden Triangle region of west Mississippi, seized upon a mission not unlike the young colonel’s and sought to make something extraordinary for those he knew and loved.
George Bryan and his wife, Marcia, familiar with the mansion and wanting to create something truly special, sought to highlight nature’s splendor and fulfill a shared dream. Waverley Mansion would be the backdrop for a world-class center of golf and recreation. Those initial plans, thwarted by circumstances, were not to be realized. But as with Colonel Young, this George, his wife a n d 2 9 o t h e r f o u n d e r s persevered. These visionaries found a piece of property not far from Waverley Mansion. Although the history and uniqueness of the mansion were not present, they understood that a diamond does not come out of the ground cut and full of sparkles. This enterprising group sought to allow the beauty they saw in their minds’ eye to emerge through the skillful hands of those who knew how to bring it out.
U.S. Open winner Jerry Pate and course designer Bob Cupp were enlisted to trim away from the undeveloped nature of 360 acres of pasture and prairie located near West Point, Mississippi, and add to its history, beauty and success. “Old Waverly, The Golf Club of Mississippi,” with a grand entryway leading to the clubhouse that reflects the original mansion’s aura and a greenscape that evokes quiet awe was the result. Beauty of the local region was drawn out and allowed to sparkle with the hard work and a devotion to detail. In just a few short years the Bryans’ vision had morphed from idea to reality and Old Waverly opened formally in September 1988.
Old Waverly’s 18-hole championship course excels, having been named to Golfweek’s Top 100, Golf Digest’s Top Course in Mississippi for too many years to count and Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses. Since 1990, Old Waverly has hosted numerous events including the men’s and women’s SEC Championship, Southern Golf Association Women’s and Junior Championships, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, as well as the 1999 U. S. Women’s Open. Seven thousand eighteen yards of undulating fairways, four lakes, numerous sand oases and well manicured greens surrounded by tall pines and numerous hardwoods have been at the center of the rising and falling of many competitive golfers of all ages and both genders from all across the United States and the globe as they did their best to do better than par.
Old Waverly was the site of the pre-marriage golf outing for Amateur great Kennon Vaughan.

Collectively our wives will be taking care of over 40 children while we are suffering the well kept fairways and fast greens of Old Waverly during Amateurs 2013. Nearly half of these children are JB’s.
Blake BourlandCollege: Auburn Tiger / UT LawTeam Record 4-5Match Record 12-14-7Individual Match Play Record 3-3-2Amateurs: 04, 05, 06, 07*, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13
Notes: Famous for “great 9/bad 9.” Chairman of the Amateurs’ rules committee. Founding Father. Ready to prove that he should not be the last person picked in the draft. Oh yea... also kind of a big deal.
Rivals: Scott, Kennon, Vegetables
John Bryson, Ph.D.College: Asbury EagleTeam Record 2-3Match Record 8-11-1Individual Match Play Record 1-2-2Amateurs: 07, 08*, 09, 11, 12, 13
Notes: Fastest player on the Amateurs circuit (or any circuit for that matter); Having 5 kids (+ 2 nannies) hasn’t slowed his tour of the great American golf courses. Known as “King of Harlan”. Will only answer to “Dr. Bryson.” Constantly challenging your manhood.
Rivals: Dallas, Playing with Blake
Preston CarpenterCollege: Ole Miss Brown BearTeam Record 1-4Match Record 11-7-2Individual Match Play Record 2-1-2Amateurs: 07, 08, 09*, 10, 11, 13
Notes: Beat cancer 9-8. Much more intimidating since being escorted out of Raiford’s for laying out a drunk for hitting on women in his party. Sat out 2012 Amateurs to refocus for Amateurs X.
Rivals: Tony, Drunks at Raifords
Jim DormanCollege: Auburn Tiger / UT MBATeam Record 5-4Match Record 17-12-4Individual Match Play Record 4-4-0Amateurs: 04, 05*, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13*
Notes: Founding Father. HIs streak of MVPs is unheard of in Amateurs history. Recent marriage, first child, captainship could cause loss of focus.
Rivals: Sisters, Duck hooks
