In 2012, the TUSA Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program was sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, R.O.C., and hosted by the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Chinese Language Center in Tainan City. Further to its setting amidst the culturally rich locales of Tainan, NCKU enjoys a ranking in the top two universities in Taiwan and is home to one of Taiwan’s most acclaimed and experienced language centers.

Recipients of this year’s scholarship undertook a rigorous schedule, seeing them attend 15 hours of language classes per week. In addition to core classes, students attended a variety of cultural classes designed to offer students additional applications for their language skills outside of the traditional classroom setting. These included classes in calligraphy, contemporary Chinese (Mandarin) pop songs, speech of political and economic development in Taiwan, Taichi, introduction of hand puppets and even Chinese opera.

Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance ( TUSA) is a non-government, non-profit nationwide organization, registered with the Secretary of State of Arkansas, United States of America. In conjunction with leading education providers in Taiwan, one of TUSA’s flagship initiatives is its Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program. The purpose of TUSA is to promote friendships and better understandings between people in the United States and people in Taiwan through cultural exchange programs, educational partnerships, and economic cooperation.

The annual program sees 36 outstanding students from the United States granted the unique opportunity to intensively study Chinese Language (Mandarin) and immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture over a period of 2 months. Upon their return to the United States, students are expected to act as goodwill ambassadors for both the United States and Taiwan wherever opportunities present themselves.

Throughout the course of the program, students gained an understanding of typical Taiwanese lifestyle. Taiwanese students of similar age and outstanding academic record were paired with their American counterparts to act as their mentor and guide for all aspects of life in Taiwan. Through a number of extracurricular activities organized by the NCKU Chinese Language Center, students were also accompanied to various regions of Taiwan ranging from the historically significant monuments of Tainan City, to the untamed coastline of Taiwan’s East coast–a region in which a large number of Taiwan’s indigenous population still resides.

On behalf of NCKU, I take this opportunity to congratulate the recipients on the successful completion of this year’s program. I sincerely hope that their experience both in NCKU and Taiwan as a whole encourages them to continue their studies in the Chinese (Mandarin) Language, as well as assist in furthering the relationship between Taiwan and the United States.

Furthermore, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Thomas Bruce, President of TUSA and Dr. Yun-Chi Yeh, Vice President of TUSA for giving us the opportunity to host the program. Also, I thank the scholarships provided by the Ministry of Education and our President Hwung-Hweng Hwung’s support. At the same time, I would like to show my gratitude for the dedication and support provided to us by National Tainan First Senior High School, National Taitung Girls' Senior High School, Deguang Catholic High School, 24 host families, NCKU language exchange partners and the teachers and staff of the Chinese Language Center.

Since 2003, the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) has worked with a number of foreign government and non-government bodies, including the United States based Taiwan United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA), to promote higher education exchanges and establish closer relations between Taiwan and the international community. In support of this aim, the MOE offers a scholarship - known as the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) - to foreign university students on an annual basis. The HES' primary function is to encourage international students to undertake Mandarin language study within Taiwan, and provide them with opportunities to increase their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society. Upon return to their home countries, students are expected to act as goodwill ambassadors for both countries. Embassies and missions may maintain contact with scholarship recipients for the purpose of identifying future opportunities whereby recipients may share their experiences

of life in Taiwan with both future HES applicants and the wider community.Recipients of the HES are awarded 25,000 NTD per month over the duration of their scholarship. Students must maintain an excellent attendance record, and may not be absent from class for any duration totaling more than 12 hours per month. Scholarship funds will be suspended for each month students do not meet minimum attendance requirements. Fur thermore, students are expected to maintain a minimum average score of 80% over each semester (quarterly). Any student that does not achieve 80% or above for two consecutive semesters will have their scholarship terminated.International applicants above the age of 18 who possess a high school diploma or above, an excellent academic record, and are of good moral character are eligible to apply. A Research-Oriented Comprehensive University with Integrated Academic FieldsNational Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was established in 1931 in Tainan. It is renowned for its programs and research in engineering, technology, architectural design and medicine. As one of Taiwan’s leading integrated research type universities, NCKU has nine colleges covering the fields of Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Management, Medicine, Social Sciences and Bioscience & Biotechnology. NCKU currently offers 40 undergraduate degree programs, 76 master’s degree programs and 54 doctoral programs. NCKU also has a national-level medical center and established the Research and Service Headquarters (RSH) in 1996, the first of its kind nationwide, a total of more than 60 research centers.

An International University with a Multi-Cultural CampusNCKU has excellent support for international students, such as the “Buddy-Buddy Program”, which is designed to facilitate international students as they adapt to life in Taiwan. Through the program, students will be able to have a better understanding of the local culture and customs. NCKU provides a free Tutoring Program for certain courses at the undergraduate level and also provides free Chinese language courses for international students in order to have an in-depth understanding of the local life and culture!

Faculty & StudentsNCKU is committed to enhancing its reputation through abundant resources, strong alumni support, and cooperative ventures with the Southern Taiwan Science Park. To meet teaching needs, NCKU has been staffed with qualified faculty and equipped with modern facilities. At present, there are about 23,000 students, more than 1,000 faculty members and more than 2,000 staff and assistants at NCKU. Of these students, about 600 hail from over 60 countries all over the world and are studying degree programs at NCKU to learn and experience a new life here.

CampusesNCKU occupies a total of 188 hectares, including 9 campuses. Seven campuses are located in the center of Tainan city, and the rest two campuses are situated outside the city center. Each campus in the major part of NCKU is closely interlinked and tightly developed as a city within the university. In addition, each department in NCKU has its own building. NCKU is undoubtedly one of the most spacious and beautiful university campuses in Taiwan.

In 1982, National Cheng Kung University established the Chinese Language Center (CLC) offering a complete Chinese language training program to promote international cultural exchange. Each year, more than 1,000 foreign students from over 50 different countries study Chinese at the language center. The students are of all ages ranging from early teens to retired seniors. Additionally, in response to popular demand, Summer classes are now available for younger children.

All of our teachers are qualified with The Ministry of Education's Certificate of Proficiency for Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language. All of them have degrees in Chinese, Foreign Languages, or other relevant studies,

the vast majority of our teachers have good proficiency in English or other languages. At present, there are 22 full-time and 11 part-time teachers employed at the CLC. This is the highest number of full-time professional teaching staff in any Chinese language center in Taiwan.

The language center offers comprehensive courses in Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture. Course design is based on a two-year program, during which students progress through four stages of development (beginner, basic, intermediate and advanced). Students will choose between attending Small Group Classes (6-12 persons) or Individual Classes. Elective classes related to Chinese culture such

as Painting, Calligraphy, Taichi, Chinese Opera, Chinese Movie Appreciation, Cuisine and Culture are also available without additional cost. This approach focuses on developing language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while simultaneously exposing students to different aspects of the language and culture in practice.

The CLC also offers customized programs for international study/tour groups and Chinese Mandarin teacher training groups. These special courses are designed to take into account the length of the tour and the requirements of the group. Apart from language courses, we organize lectures, cultural excursions, language

exchanges, and host families, to give students a genuine sense of daily life in Taiwan.

Ranked among the top 2 universities in Taiwan and situated in Tainan City, known for having the best quality of life in the country, National Cheng Kung University affords visiting foreign students the opportunity to regularly interact with over 20,000 full-time NCKU students as well as the local population of Tainan City. In addition to language and cultural exchanges, students are encouraged to make friends and expand their international outlook. Many foreign students stay in Taiwan to pursue academic degrees.

At 80 years old, NCKU is one of the top universities in Taiwan, known for our rich history and impeccable accomplishments in the area of engineering sciences. We are now, in engineering sciences, ranked in the top 19 universities internationally. We strive to be one of the top universities in the world and, in no small part due to Ministry of Education funding over recent years (reserved for Taiwan’s elite education institutions), have engaged in some robust internationalization programs, including hosting the 2012 TUSA Ambassador Scholarship Program. The cultural diversity of NCKU is represented by the students of some seventy nationalities in attendance at any given time. In this program, in addition to focusing on the improvement of students’ Chinese abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing, we also paid attention to the cultural experience and learning. The purpose of the 2012 TUSA Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program is to encourage educational cooperation between Taiwan and the USA; to train Chinese language talents and increase the friendship between the two people through cultural exchange. This year is National Cheng Kung University’s first year to run the TUSA program. There are 2 aims in carrying out this project: one is to assist in National Cheng Kung University’s internationalization agenda so as to publicize the prestige of the University; the second is to improve the procedures and processes within the Chinese Language Center in order to improve teaching quality.

According to the research, study abroad is definitely beneficial for language learners. The aim of language learning in the 21st century is to communicate and socialize across cultures. We discover that from research data collected from participants in previous study abroad programs that interests, curiosity and curriculums are the most important motives for students to come to Taiwan to study. Therefore, when designing curriculum for the TUSA program, apart from making sure that we meet student needs and fulfill their aims for studying abroad, we also wanted to achieve the aim of training Chinese language talents, increase cross cultural exchanges and establish friendships between people.

When we designed a language curriculum, the audience of the teaching is another important consideration. Students of TUSA are the crème de la crème of universities from 20 states in the whole of America. They came from different disciplines. Only a few students are majoring in Chinese. Students who had never studied

Chinese before was around 30%. Another 30% had achieved beginner level of Chinese and the rest had achieved an intermediate level of Chinese. This characteristic is slightly different from an ordinary study abroad program. Our research reveals that for an ordinary study abroad group, the most striking characteristic is that all students tended to come from the same institution or university with similar study backgrounds.

According to the data collected above, this program emphasizes both language studies as well as language related cultural phenomena. The design of the curriculum is as follows: (1) Aim of teaching: to develop in students’ basic

language use ability based on authentic language use situations in the target language society; and to gain knowledge about Chinese language cultures as well as improving students’ communicative abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The teaching was primarily conducted in complex Chinese characters.

( 2 ) Te a c h i n g h o u r s : t h e r e w e r e 3 - h o u r language classes per day, a total of 120 hours. There were also 44 hours of cultural classes (including lectures and authentic experiences), 1 or 2 per week. In addition, there were 7 lectures on Chinese culture and 4 cultural excursions, a total of 48 hours. The entire curriculum consists of 8 weeks and a total of 212 hours.

(3) Class arrangement: in order to achieve the desired outcome of language learning, each class is conducted in 2 different formats: one was a class that involves a small class

and the other was one-on-one tutoring sessions. Allocation of classes depended on the pre-class test results. There are 4 classes of differing abilities from zero beginners to intermediate level. Every class consists of 6-12 people. The cultural classes were taught to the whole group and were conducted through lectures and experiential learning. We also organized exchange student partners from National Cheng Kung University to assist course participants on a one to one basis. Course participants also have opportunities to visit host families on the weekend in order to increase opportunities for authentic and real life Chinese language communication.

(4) Teaching material: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese (2nd edition) was used as the main teaching material. Additional authentic materials were also used.

(5) Teaching speed: based on the teaching material, one chapter per week, plus other extension material; for 8 weeks, 8 to 10 chapters could be completed.

(6) Teaching approaches: teaching strategies include in class explanations, class activities, small group presentations, individual interviews, forums and extracurricular activities such as cultural site visiting etc.

(7) Cultural classes and other associated arrangement: in order to achieve the aim of understanding the traditions and cultures of local people, mutual communication and fr iendship, apar t from language classes, traditional cultural activities such

as Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Taichi as well as other modern cultural activities such as the tea ceremony, Physiognomy, as well Chinese hand puppet shows and classical Chinese opera. They were also introduced to knowledge about Chinese culture, philosophy as well as Chinese aesthetics. We also coordinated these activit ies with visits to historical sites, the National Palace Museum in order to experience the mingling of different cultures such as Hakka and the aboriginal people of Taiwan. We hoped that through these activities as well through one on one language exchange, visits to host families and opportunities to be English volunteers, participants genuinely experienced authentic living in Taiwan.

(8) Course achievement evaluation: a listening mini test was carr ied out each week. Students were tested in class through speaking tasks, presentations and an end of course exam.

After the conclusion of the program, students w h o h a v e s u c c e s s f u l l y c o m p l e t e d t h e assessment tasks in the curriculum will earn 6 credits. At the moment, 10 universities in the U.S. including Northwestern University, University of Florida, University of Arkansas, University of Denver, University of Vermont, University of Colorado, University of Maine Orono, Florida State University, University of Colorado Boulder, and Swarthmore College have already approved the credits gained in this program. This is one of this program’s characteristic and attests to the professionalism and quality of the program.

Language Classes

1. Class A & B:

In order to achieve effective language instruction, part of the TUSA language program was conducted in one on one format to maximize opportunities for individual practice. Such arrangements were designed for students to achieve the desired learning outcome within two months. The 34 students were divided into 4 smaller classes (Class A-D), according to the entry test conducted before students’ commencement in their course. Each class had 6-12 students.

(1) Course DescriptionBeginner classes were designed for students with no experience of learning Chinese. However, all classes were taught in Chinese. According to students’ requirements, both Mandarin Phonetic Symbols and Hanyu Pinyin romanization was used in class. In addition to the classroom curriculum, students learned about Taiwanese folklore culture through visits to culture sites and other extra curricula activities.

(2) Course ObjectivesThe class emphasized the instruction in basic pronunciation, grammar, and commonly used vocabulary, with the aim of enabling students to achieve basic co mmunicative ability in Chinese by the end of the course. The course adopted a “whole language” approach to instruction, focusing on listening and speaking in class, and reading and writing at home to achieve the aim of integrating the four skills. Students participated in speaking and listening activities related to the themes in the text, as well as learning to read and write about 250 to 300 new words and 27 to 35 sentence patterns.

2. Class C & D:(1) Course Description

This course is suitable for students who have completed at least 180 to 350 hours of Chinese language learning. At the completion of this course, students are expected to be able to fluently and correctly discuss issues dealt with in this course, and achieve the goal of linguistic communication. In addition to the classroom c u r r i c u l u m , s t u d e nt s l e a r n e d a b o u t Taiwanese folklore culture through visits to cultural sites and other extracurricular activities.

(2) Course ObjectivesStudents were able to talk about their own work experience and learned about the culture of gift giving, and use Chinese to briefly introduce aspects of Taiwanese history. Students learned how to talk about activities and legends associated with festivals and introduce festivals in their own countries as well as famous tourist sites in Chinese. Students participated in speaking and listening activities related to the themes in the text, as well as learning to read and write about 350 to 600 new words and 50 to 60 sentence patterns.

(3) The Content of Class CClass C was based on the topics in Practical Audio-Visual Chinese (2nd edition) from Book 2 Lesson 1 to Lesson 8. The topics are as below :

3. One-On-One Tutorial ClassIn this program, we also offered one-on-one tutorial classes everyday to help TUSA students preview and review what they had learned in-and-out of school. Almost every TUSA student would be assigned a tutor that helped students improve their Chinese ability. Basically, students had a one-hour tutorial class before entering their assigned language class so that they would have enough time to preview and review what they learned in their previous language class.

4. Grading Criteria : The TUSA Program requires students to achieve a minimum of 60 marks in all classes. The points system would convert into letter grades:A = 80-100 (Excellent)B = 70-79 (Good)C = 60-69 (Fair)D = 50-59 (Fail)E = below 50 (Fail)

Students who have achieved a minimum of 60 marks in all classes (C or above) will receive 6 credit points from NCKU.

Assessment items include: Final exam 20%, Performance 20%, Quiz 20%, Homework 20%, Attendance 20%. These items add up to 100%.

Chinese opera together with Greek tragic-comedy and Indian Sanskrit Opera are the three oldest dramatic art forms in the world. During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the Emperor Taizong established an opera school with the poetic name Liyuan (Pear Garden). From that time on, performers of Chinese opera were referred to as 'disciples of the pear garden'. Since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) it has been encouraged by court officials and emperors and has become a traditional art form. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it became fashionable among ordinary people. Performances were watched in tearooms, restaurants, and even around makeshift stages. Chinese Opera is really a microcosm of Chinese culture and hence provides a window into all aspects of Chinese religion, philosophy, customs and folklore. Take this class and learn how to decode these beautiful performances layered with meaning and symbolism.

太極 Taichi

Taichi is an ancient practice, part martial art and part mind and body health cultivation technique.

Characterised by slow precise flowing movement, Taichi can be seen as both a way of developing martial power and of cultivating health and personal power. There are a number of so-called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (originally derived from the natural movements of animals and birds). Aside from the health and relaxation benefits, learning this art can help one develop direct intuitive understanding of some of the fundamental tenets of Chinese philosophy such as Yin and Yang. The philosophical underpinnings of Taichi are deep and widely applicable.

Learning a language and understanding the culture from which it came are two sides of the same coin. In order to be able to use a language with subtlety and finesse, one must understand how the people of that culture think and the cultural references that they use. NCKU understands this and hence provides an extensive program of classes about Chinese and Taiwanese culture, philosophy, art, mythology and cuisine.

中國結 Chinese Knotting

Traditional Chinese decorative knots, are one of China’s traditional folk arts. By taking this class, one can gain an appreciation of an ancient art and also gain a window into the fascinating world of Chinese symbolism. Chinese knots appeared in ancient times, were developed in Tang and Song Dynasty (960-1229 A.D.) and were popularized in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911A.D.) A characteristic of Chinese knots is that every knot is made of a single rope and named by its specific form and meaning. By skillfully combining different knots or other auspicious adornments, a unique auspicious ornament which blends beauty, symbolism and ones wishes is formed. Examples of the symbolic meaning of Chinese knots include "Full of Joy," "Happiness & Longevity," "Double Happiness," "Luck and Auspiciousness as One Wishes," and "Wishing You A Fair Wind (safe travel)." To fit in with the needs of modern life, Chinese knots currently appear in two forms as products. The two main kinds are auspicious hangings and knitted clothing adornments. Types of auspicious hangings includes large tapestries, big room hangings, automobile hangings etc. Knitted clothing adornments include rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other woman's special adornments.

Chinese puppets were invented over 2,000 years ago. They were at the height of their development during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Puppet shows were performed for kings and queens in the royal courts. The Chinese province of Fujian continues to be where the most skilled Chinese puppet craftsmen live and work. They are usually modeled after characters in Chinese opera, and there are also shows and performances that have been written strictly for Chinese puppet shows. Each puppet's style of clothing and make-up represents a different character in Chinese puppet shows.

Chinese hand puppets can be operated with one or two hands, one hand operates the puppet's head and hands, and the other hand operates the puppet's legs. Puppet show troupes are still well-known in China today, and some puppet troupes even perform abroad. Learning about Chinese puppets can give a window into many aspects of Chinese culture, philosophy and folklore since the characters and stories contain a great amount of symbolism.

This class mainly introduced the political history and economic development of Taiwan. Its intention was to give students basic knowledge of the political status and economic influence between Taiwan and China. The political situation between Taiwan and China was also discussed because it has been a widely discussed issue.

Chinese face reading is as relevant today as it was in the past and its use is cross-cultural. Taking this class can not only help in understanding an ancient art but also Chinese philosophical principles. We all have a blend of elements and all faces reflect patterns found in nature. Face reading first appeared in China during the 6th century B.C., possibly as the specialty of magic men not affiliated to any religion. It is thought that they were probably Taoist shamans from rural areas such as Szechwan who specialized in non-traditional divination arts. By 220 B.C., the art of face reading was established in Chinese life and classic treatises, such as the Golden Scissors and Bamboo Chronicles, were written at this time.

Taiwanese tea culture includes tea arts, traditional tea ceremonies, and the social aspects of tea consumption. While the most common teas consumed in Taiwan are Oolongs (especially Taiwanese Oolongs such as Iron Goddess and Alpine Oolong), Puers, black teas and green teas are also popular. Many of the classical arts can be seen in the tea culture, such as calligraphy, flower arts, and incense arts. Most people in Taiwan drink tea, and tea serves not only a drink, but also a part of the culture. The tea culture of Taiwan can be traced back to its roots in Chinese tea culture. Tea appreciation is akin to how people in Western countries appreciate wine. Every aspect from its cultivation to its preparation and consumption is minutely examined and refined. Enhance your knowledge of Chinese tea by taking this class, experience fine teas and gain an insight into a key aspect of Chinese culture.

lassesChinese Brush Calligraphy is one of the traditional four arts which was once an important critical standard for the Chinese literati in the imperial era and now prevails not only in China but also worldwide as a unique branch of art.

Chinese calligraphy is so abstract and sublime that in Chinese culture it is universally regarded to be the most revealing power of a person. While one has conformed to the defined structure of words, the expression can be displayed with great creativity by individuals. Traditionally, in the civil service exams, one was judged just as much on the quality of one’s handwriting as they were on the content of what they had written. This carries over to modern society when a fast way to impress a Chinese colleague is by one’s ability to write beautiful characters.

Taiwan is home to an ethnic and cultural diversity that affects its dietary culture as well. Taiwanese cuisine has been strongly influenced by foods rooted in mainland China’s Fujian province, and also by the cuisines of Fuzhou, Chaozhou and Guangdong. During Taiwan’s half-century of Japanese colonial rule, Japanese-style cooking techniques also began to color Taiwanese food. Such classic Japanese foods as fried prawns and raw fish have been transformed into Taiwanese specialties. “Hostess club cuisine (酒家菜),” which developed in the Beitou area at social clubs and entertainment venues, and “Bando (辦桌)” culture, a form of boisterous eating around a round table in an open space, were significant in the development of Taiwanese cuisine. When the Republic of China government relocated to Taiwan, Taiwanese cuisine began to incorporate the hometown dishes of people who arrived from the various Mainland Chinese provinces, resulting in a still greater diversity. With a rich array of dishes, Taiwanese cuisine offers a style unique in the Chinese-speaking world. Tainan is renowned within Taiwan for its great food, take this course and learn what delights this part of the world has to offer!

Chinese Painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Taking this class can give one an instant connection to an ancient art form.

Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as Guo Hua (國畫), meaning 'national' or 'native painting', as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black or colored ink; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made of are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

The Chinese Stamp Engraving (or seal carving) is one of the traditional four arts, i.e., Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Poetry and Stamp Engraving. A personal stamp in the color red is an integral part of a Chinese artwork whether a painting or a work of calligraphy. It is not only the signature of the artist on the artwork, but also an essential touch to add extra meaning or style to the work. Seal carving is an ancient art. Seals became practical and popular during the Warring States (475 B.C.-221 B.C.). And more importantly seals have gradually become an indispensable item for signing important legal documents since then. An official seal represents the office and the power. Seals were matured and flourished in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 B.C.). The functions of seals have also changed over the dynasties. Some seals were still created for their practical functions, but some seals were created purely as works of art. Of course there were seals created to serve both purposes.

Taking this class can give one access to this ancient art but also can help in understanding the development and evolution of characters. Seals can be carved in many styles with each dynasty having multiple forms of the modern characters students are familiar with.

The modern language that we call Taiwanese has been passed on for several generations primarily through oral tradition without a standardized writing system. It may be considered a variant of the Amoy or Hokkien dialect of Chinese brought by Fujianese settlers from Mainland China to the island of Taiwan (Formosa). Hence Taiwanese can also be heard on Mainland China and also in many Chinese expat communities around the world. Many ancient Chinese texts, including for example Chinese medical songs actually rhyme better in Taiwanese since it is asserted that that was the language that they were written in. Learning Taiwanese and taking this class can enable students to interact with local people in their first language and hence understand Taiwan on a whole new level!

As for the cultural class, aside from introducing Chinese traditional cultures and history, students also have an access to modern Chinese cultural activities. In the program, we arranged a cultural class related to Chinese songs to help TUSA students experience Chinese pop songs and learn common words in an active way.

Flour Miniature (Dough Figure) is a kind of small sculpture that uses flour and glutinous rice flour as the main raw material, plus the components such as color, paraffin, honey etc, and undergoes control and mildew-proof processing. It is a type of folk artwork that is easy to make but has very high artistic value. The traditional folk craft boasts a history of two or three hundred years so far.

In local Taiwanese everyday conversation, some words have double meanings. The second meaning is usually related to a more colorful, humorous or controversial aspect of the culture. For example the word 機車 (ji1 che1) usually means moped or scooter but it can also refer to someone who has strange behavior that is difficult to understand. Taking this class is a fun way to learn natural local slang and add color and flavor to students’ spoken Chinese!

Being a language exchange partner is one of special roles in this program. 42 NCKU students were chosen from hundreds of volunteer applicants. The main purpose of being a language partner is to encourage linguistic and cultural interaction between local NCKU students and TUSA students. We have arranged several activities and trips for both students to take part in to increase their interactions and offer an opportunity to make friends. For instance, NCKU language partners have joined the cultural excursions actively. They also made good use of time by taking TUSA students to many famous places and hot spots, experiencing traditional snacks and food, and introducing them to Taiwan.

Not only did the NCKU students participate in activities, they were also willing to help and offer assistance in the daily lives of the TUSA students. Whether it was picking them up or dropping them off, introducing the TUSA students to the campus and surroundings, taking them to the hospital, consoling them when they felt depressed, the NCKU students were willing to help. NCKU students spent almost their entire summer to interact and form relationships with the TUSA students. By the time the program was over, there had been so many wonderful memories created together with the TUSA students. The language partner system has not only increased student interactions, it also has given TUSA students a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality of local students.

Volunteer English Teaching in Local High School

Volunteer English Teaching is also one important objective of this program. TUSA students interested in gaining some teaching experience in a non EFL country (Taiwan in this case) were provided an opportunity to teach high school students in local schools.

During the program, TUSA students had routine teaching times in two local high schools, these include National Tainan First Senior High School and Deguang Catholic High School. Moreover, we also cooperated with National Taitung Girls' Senior High School to offer TUSA students a chance to interact with local people in eastern Taiwan.

In addition to a series of language and cultural classes, students also had 4 cultural excursions to help them gain knowledge of Taiwanese culture and experience the Taiwanese lifestyle. Students have visited Tainan culture sites, Taiwan Indigenous Culture Park, Tainan Wu Shan Tou Reservoir and Kaohsiung Meinong Hakka Village. Students also travelled around the northern and eastern Taiwan when they spent a day volunteering at the National Taitung Girls’ Senior High School, and they also visited famous spots including Taipei 101, National Palace Museum, Taroko National Park and many others. What is particularly worth mentioning is that language partners accompanied TUSA students to assist them during the trips. By taking part in the trips, both TUSA and NCKU students had more opportunities to learn more about each other and build bridges across the cultural divide.

At the end of TUSA Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program, we held a closing performance and a farewell banquet to celebrate the end of our language and cultural classes and offer students a chance to perform what they have learned. Normally, these two activities are separated. However, unfortunately, due to a strong typhoon “天秤

Tembin”, we combined the performance and banquet together.

In the ceremony, students were granted their certificates, and they also shared their feedbacks. Additionally, both TUSA students and NCKU language exchange partners prepared several different performances such as singing, dancing, short play and films. Their performances showed not only what TUSA students had learned in 2 months but also the exchange of TUSA students and NCKU language partners.

I had lots fun with you guys!! And I’ve learnt pretty much every American culture or slang. We were eating, sleeping, dancing, surfing, having fun, drinking tea, visiting historic monuments and taking buses together for this whole two month. This two month was the most unique and amazing months in my whole life!!!! It’s just like a dream. This dream started too soon and woke up too early. I really want you guys live in Taiwan forever!!! I love you guys!!

雖然不是第一次參加這個活動,但是這次的時間卻是最長的一個,和不同國家的人來往就像是深度旅遊該國,雖然彼此說的每一句話可能因語言而非完全明白,卻仍一同度過了非常愉快又三八的時光,一樣是生活二十年的台南,卻因你們的身影讓台南增添不一樣的新風情。未來會變得如何誰也不知道,但我相信我們對這段時間的美好是難以改變的。

I am glad that I have the chance to attend TUSA language exchange program. In these few weeks, what I’ve already got from this program is more than what I expected. The world is an international global village nowadays. By this kind of exchange program, we Taiwanese students and also American students know more about not only the life but also the culture of both Taiwan and the US. And I am sure this experience will be an unforgettable memory which will be with us forever.

Thank my American and Taiwanese partner, Lin and Tammy. You are soooooooo nice and sweet!! Hope we will meet one day :)

To tell the truth, I was a little bit nervous, cuz’ I have never join in the program like this! Also I’m afraid of speaking English.lol But I quickly find out that hanging out with u guys makes me feel like experiencing exciting adventure every day and we do have much fun together! If I didn’t meet u guys, my summer vocation would be badly boring. I’m gonna miss u, my friends for life.:) don’t forget us and Taiwan!

I am really happy to join this TUSA program and have a lot of fun with cool boys and lovely girls in Tusa. I practiced English speaking with them, also taught them a little bit Chinese, took them to the night market…, however, the most important thing to me is that I made many good friends here. I enjoyed the time when we are together. I will never forget this special experience and the people I met in Tusa, Joseph, Josue, Chris, Dave, Brain…love you guys, wish you good luck and hope can see you again in the future.

能來參加這個活動真得是很開心,我發現,我交到一群很好的朋友,見識了很多事情,總總的不一樣,都深深的吸引著我。這次活動我也發現自己對於台灣這塊土地,還是有很多的不了解,而他們在學習著認識台灣,同時我也在學習著認識一個熟悉但卻又不熟悉的地方。

This summer, I had a precious experience of being a language partner in TUSA. I really benefited a lot from this language exchange program. For instance, I was afraid that I couldn’t make myself understood because I didn’t speak fluent English. However, the TUSA students kept encouraging me. Therefore, I gained my confidence to speak in front of you. In addition, every time I went on a trip with you, I knew more about our own cultures. It really broadened my horizons. Last but not least, the most important thing is the days we had together. I firmly believe that this summer will be extremely memorable for both you and me.

在TUSA裡的生活,我想單單用Amazing一個字形容應該還不夠貼切吧!短暫兩個月裡,帶給我的不只是能與妳們成為朋友的感動,更讓我有了思念世界另一端的理由:) 更發現很神奇的,語言似乎不再是我們之間的障礙!妳們總說因為我們熱情的態度,讓妳們備感溫馨;對我們而言,妳們一次又一次的微笑與擁抱,才是我一輩子都不會忘記的回憶!

第一次參加語言交換,一切是多麼的新鮮,剛開始看到麗雅時,有些擔心害怕,不知道該如何和她溝通,但是經過幾次的相處,我們彼此學習自己的母語,互相幫忙,從每一次的相處中,感受到不同文化的洗禮,不同的看法和感受,讓我身處在臺灣,卻能有如此令人驚喜的體驗,這真是太棒了!

美國,一個除了台灣我最熟悉的國家,因為TUSA計畫,讓我有機會去認識更多來自這個國家的朋友。在這當中,我認識了目前為止我最好的語言交換夥伴,Ryan,還有其他來自美國和成大的學生,而我也感到非常開心與榮幸可以認識他們並且和他們成為朋友。最後,我想要感謝華語中心辦公室的淑玲姊給我這個機會,參加此次TUSA暑期計畫。

將近兩個月的語言交換時間,我們一起去了台灣很多地方,感謝TUSA這個計畫讓兩個成長環境和語言都不同的人,能有機會共同感受以往自己都不曾用心感受的台灣風情,也同時交流著彼此的生活經驗和文化,雖然相處的時光很短暫,但共同相處過的那些記憶和美好一定都還會存留在我們心中,一輩子!很幸運成為妳的partner,親愛的Abby。

沒想到兩個月的時間看似很長,實際上卻是一轉眼就過了。很開心能在這兩個月的時間裡認識這麼多的朋友,不管是台灣的朋友還是美國的朋友,我在他們身上都學到了很多。我也要謝謝我的語言交換,因為我是第一次參加這個活動,真的很感謝她包容我的不足。這個暑假我永遠都不會忘記的!

其實真的很慶幸自己能夠有這個機會和外國來的學生交流,這讓我今年的暑假大大的不一樣。在這個活動裡,不僅僅是和我的language partner成為好朋友,也讓我交了很多不同類型的朋友,不管是美國人或是台灣人。這真的會是一個很棒的回憶:D

Thanks for everyone in the TUSA program. It’s so wonderful to meet you in Tainan, Taiwan. In these two months, you helped me experience more Taiwan culture. Especially thanks to Ariel West, my lovely language partner. Through her eyes, I saw a lot of beautiful scenes that I never know. I’m really glad that I joined this program. Farewell, all my loving friends, it’s so wonderful to be with you in this summer!

I’m glad to have this chance to know everybody. I do learn a lot from not only my language exchange partner but also all the members in this group. I have a fulfill summer vacation and I hope everyone feels the same. In Chinese we say “有緣”to describe people who has fate or destiny to meet each other. 和我的夥伴Tommy見面之後,我即為他的中文程度和認真努力的學習態度所驚艷,雖然有時候會花比較多的時間讓對方知道自己想表達什麼,但我想這就是學習語言的樂趣。這一個月以來,我們和其他TUSA夥伴們一起逛夜市、烤肉、唱KTV…,每一個都是很棒的回憶。但願我的夥伴Tommy來臺灣的這兩個月過得很愉快,我很高興可以成為他的語言學習夥伴!

012大使英文志工服務,昨天安排了34名來自美國各地的大學生,前往國立台東女中,透過唱遊、面對面交談等活動交流,台東女中學生把握難得機會「磨」英文。

來自美國麻薩諸塞州的蘿倫說,昨天一整天下來,她覺得東女學生英文素質普遍有中等以上水準,但太緊張,所以說不好,因為說不好,怕被取笑也就更不敢開口。

包括蘿倫在內的34名美籍學生,昨天來到台東女中扮演英文志工,直接與東女二、三年級的學生在教室裡互動,面對面交談,也

分享美國、台灣兩地風土人情。活動剛開始,多數東女學生都不敢開口,藉由用英語彼此自我介紹,慢慢的學生的信心與勇

氣大增,下午甚至還有許多東女學生,主動用英語邀請美籍學生,前往台東市森林公園騎單

車,讓這些遠道而來的朋友,體驗台東的好山、好水。

晚上東女邀請這些美籍學生回家住宿,讓外籍志工體驗台灣家庭的生活方式。

校長潘致強表示,透過這樣的互動,不僅有助學生開口說英語,也讓學生成為台灣的外交小

為提升外籍學生聽、說、讀、寫華語能力,增進同儕情誼及培

養穩健台風,國立成功大學華語中心23日中午在光復校區修

齊大樓三樓26308室舉行中文語文競賽「你說我猜」,分成

零、初、中、高四級,除二百多位華語中心修習華文的外籍學

生外,臺美姐妹關係聯盟大使暑期華語文研習團(TUSA

Ambassador Summer Scholarship program)34位美

籍學生大使也熱烈參與,他們透過「你說我猜」競賽中,為近

兩個月的華語文研習課程劃下美麗的句點。

儘管題目的難度都很高,但臺美姐妹聯盟(Taiwan-United

States Sister Relations Alliance, TUSA)學生大使,雖

是短短時間在華語中心學華語,但華語表達的能力都很不錯,

不輸透過其他管道進入成大華語中心的外籍生,尤其他們也都

擁有緊密且良好的團隊默契,十足展現外籍學生們的學習成

果。

成大華語中心主任吳榮富說,今年「你說我猜」延續去年以活

潑且刺激的團隊競賽方式舉行,一方面讓參賽的學生們在比賽

中訓練中文的表達、解說及理解能力,另一方面也讓參與比賽

的同學們之間培養團隊合作的精神與情誼。

吳榮富主任也表示,TUSA團員都是來自美國大學的菁英,在成大華語中心學習華文成效非常好,個個資質聰慧,學習的

動機都很高,雖然有些學生剛來時,連一句中文都聽不懂 但經過這八周密集的語言學習課程 大部分的學生都能夠以中文

表達自己的想法。

來自美國賓州大學(University of Pennsylvania)的柯玲玲(Ariel Koren)是這次「你說我猜」中文語文競賽的參賽者,

也將是明天臺美姐妹關係聯盟大使暑期華語研習團成果發表會的主持人,她熱情地大聲表態她愛台灣的心情。她說,台灣

人的熱情,讓台灣華語文研習活動,時間雖然短暫卻很豐盛,她感謝在台灣遇見的所有朋友與老師,帶給她最快樂最有收

穫的學習經驗。

TUSA團員劉柳(Marian Lakey)同學是來自美國夏威夷大學(University of Hawaii),她認為TUSA在成大學習的經驗是

最棒的。她說她對中國文化滿懷憧憬,一直到大學才有機會學中文,這次能夠來台灣學中文是千載難逢的機緣,這八周的

學習課程讓她在中文的聽、說能力進步很多,非常感謝成大華語中心幫她安排的學習夥伴,讓她不僅在學習中文上有直接

的幫助,更是讓她在台灣因此交了不少台灣好朋友。

來自美國維吉尼亞大學(University of Virginia)的簡堂牧(Tommy Kent)第一次出國就是來到台灣,他也說這次參加

TUSA到成大學中文讓他大開眼界,他以剛學會的中文成語為例說,他來台灣之前猶如「井底之蛙」,對於這近兩個月在

台灣的豐富生活經驗,他感謝成大華語中心的安排,他特別感謝學習夥伴對他語言上的協助,以及台灣住宿家庭對於他在

生活上的照顧。

對於華語中心安排TUSA所有學生前往台東女中、台南一中和德光女中從事志工服務,簡堂牧同學說,在台東的學習與服
