ROBIN SALTERS

A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 gradu-ate of the University, Robin Salters continues to uphold the proud winning tradition of New Haven volleyball started by her former head coach and program founder, Deborah Chin. Since taking the

helm in 1994 as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has posted a 504-148 record and .773 winning percentage.

Salters continues to lead the New Haven women’s volleyball program to na-tional prominence, as the 2011 campaign saw the Chargers advance to their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and its 16th in Salters’ 18-year tenure.

Fueled by the Chargers’ 23-7 record, Salters eclipsed the 500-win plateau in 2011. Her 504 victories entering the 2012 season rank her at 25th all-time in Division II coaching wins and 14th among active coaches. Salters’ success is even more outstanding in terms of winning percentage, where her .774 mark is the ninth-best all-time among coaches with 10 or more years at the Division II level.

Since joining the Northeast-10 Conference in 2008, the Chargers are 59-0 in regular season conference matches en route to four straight NE-10 Regular Season Championships.

Salters was chosen as the 2008 AVCA East Region Coach of the Year and was previously named the 2006 East Coast Conference and AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In 2010, Salters earned her fi rst Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honor, after leading the Chargers to their third-straight undefeated conference season. The Chargers hosted the 2008 NCAA East Regional at Charger Gymnasium for the second time in three years, and Salters guided UNH to the regional title and a spot in the Elite Eight.

Salters opened her coaching career by taking UNH to the NCAA Tournament on 10 straight occasions from 1994 to 2003, including six berths in the NCAA Elite Eight and six conference championships. Salters guided UNH to the Elite Eight in her fi rst four seasons and fi ve of her fi rst six.

Salters became head coach at her alma mater in 1994 after serving as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University in 1993. Previously, she coached the Junior Olympics team for the Western Michigan Volleyball Association. While earning her Master’s degree at Western Michigan Univer-sity, she also coached the Kalamazoo Central High School freshman team.

A former player at Lake Michigan College, where she earned an associate of arts degree, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the starting setter in 1989 and 1990. During her playing career at UNH, she earned All-Region honors and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 1990-91 academic year. She concluded her career by winning the University’s NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 1991.

An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Salters has served as the chair of the All-Northeast Regional selection com-mittee, was a member of the Division II Head Coaches Committee and a voter for the organization’s weekly Top-25 poll. Robin has also served for 12 years as a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, including eight years as chair. In 2009 she served as the national chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Selection Committee. In 2009 Salters was also inducted into the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Salters is also UNH’s Senior Woman Administrator and Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2012 CHARGER VOLLEYBALL • FOLLOW @CHARGERSVBALL

2012 PREVIEWExpectations are always high for the New Haven women’s volleyball team, which has advanced to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments and has never lost a Northeast-10 Conference regular season match. The 2012 campaign will once again come with a high standard from the onset as Head Coach Robin Salters ’91 returns seven student-athletes from a squad that posted a 23-7 record and a 15-0 tally in the NE-10 last fall.

Salters, who is entering her 19th season as head coach, ranks 25th all-time in Division II and 14th among active coaches with 504 career victories. Her success has been even more outstanding in terms of winning per-centage, where she owns the ninth-best mark all-time at .774 against Division II competition. She had guided the Chargers to the NCAA Tournament in 16 of 18 cam-paigns at New Haven.

Leading the way once again for New Haven will be the team’s lone senior – Keidy Candelaria. An All-America honoree and the Northeast-10 Player of the Year last season, Candelaria led the Chargers with 4.48 kills per set and a .247 hitting percentage. She also shared the team high of 32 service aces and rated second in digs with 2.91 per set.

Joining Candelaria on the outside or playing on the right-side opposite her will be sophomores Margo Meteyer and Hayley Wilson and freshman Kristen Lee. Meteyer appeared in 27 matches last fall, collecting 115 kills and landing 20 service aces. Wilson, who will see time at a number of positions, posted 17 kills, 41 digs and 10 service aces while taking the court in 20 matches. Lee comes to New Haven from Colorado Springs, Colo., where she was an all-league performer at Liberty High School.

The Chargers are led at the net by 2011 AVCA All-East Region selection Amber Cannady. The 6-4 middle hitter, who was also a Third Team All-Northeast-10 pick, trailed only Candelaria in kills with 2.09 per frame and headed the Chargers’ blocking efforts at the net with 130 total blocks (1.17 per set).

Another key piece of the New Haven frontline is sopho-more Kristy Atufunwa. Atufunwa had a hand in 71 blocks in her rookie campaign in addition to 165 kills. She started 26 matches as a freshman while seeing action in all 30 of the Chargers’ contests.

A new addition at the net is junior Ashley Dalton, a trans-fer from Northern Arizona University who earned all-state laurels and holds the single-season blocks record at Capital High School in Helena, Mont.

For the last three seasons, the offense has been run through setter Chelsey Alpough ’12, a three-time Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Year. Following Alpough’s graduation, Kaulana Ane will take the reins of the offense. Ane was a Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team selection last fall after fi lling out her stat line with 262 digs, 172 assists and 50 blocks in 111 sets played.

Sophomore Ashley Gomez is the lone Charger returning to the back row. Gomez was a defensive specialist com-ing off of Salters’ bench last season, racking up 28 digs and 13 service aces in 75 sets of work over 27 matches. She will be joined by freshman Kea-Marie Olaso, a former Junior Olympics medalist and a four-year starter at Le Jardin Academy, and graduate student Bai Zhang from Shan Dong Normal University in China.

The Chargers were selected as the favorite in the North-east-10 Coaches’ Preseason Poll. New Haven is 59-0 in regular season matches against NE-10 foes since joining the conference prior to the 2008 season. Second-place Stonehill and third-place Adelphi – the reigning NE-10 Tournament Champion – also received fi rst-place votes in the preseason poll.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The NE-10 consists of 16 member institutions that are located throughout the Northeast including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfi eld, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The 16 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, New York to Boston, Massachusetts and from Burlington, Vermont to Long Island, New York. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, New Haven, Worcester, and New York.

The Conference most recently welcomed the University of New Haven in 2008 and Adelphi University in 2009, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education on and off the fi eld of its more than 5,500 student athletes.

Counted among the many accomplishments of our institutions are NCAA Division II National Championships in women’s basketball, fi eld hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse,

men’s soccer, women’s track & fi eld, and men’s and women’s swimming & diving.

This past year, 47 teams representing the Northeast-10 saw their name on NCAA selection days as Division II national championship fi elds were announced. The 47 teams represented fourteen different institutions.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, two Northeast-10 teams claimed national titles, as UMass Lowell won the fi eld hockey championship and Adelphi won the women’s lacrosse national crown. Indivudally, New Haven’s Shannon Gagne won fi ve national titles at the indoor and outdoor track and fi eld championship meets, Stonehill’s Corey Thomas was the national champion in the high jump, and Southern Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas took home the gold medal in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Saint Rose women’s soccer team also claimed its fi rst national championship in 2011.

From the fi eld of play to the class room, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. The conference honored close to 200 student-athletes throughout the year that excelled at a high level on the fi eld and in the classroom as members of the academic all conference teams. Additionally, 2,917 student-athletes representing each of the sixteen schools earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll last year.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the Conference offers in championship play, the most of any Division II conference.

EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE

The University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 26 times in 29 seasons. That string in-cludes 19 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and 11 berths to the Elite Eight. Overall in

36 seasons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,080-326 - a winning percentage of .768.

Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The résumé of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4.

Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the pro-gram’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the fi rst 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December of 2006.

She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top fi ve all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top fi ve four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her fi nal 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past fi ve years alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 59 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $100 million in construction projects and has launched 15 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fi ction, published by the University of

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and fi lm form (he was associate producer of the fi lm), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of

Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and fi nd UNH a new athletics conference that best fi ts the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a fi ve-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfi nals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fi fth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top fi ve four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven.

A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.
