Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce Sponsors, Supporters and Volunteers:

The Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the 90th annual Mardi Gras celebration this October! This event draws people from all over our region to our small town for a time of fun and entertainment. The event begins with the crowning of the Mardi Gras Queen on October 13th. October 26th features a children’s costume parade and a business trick or treat, followed on October 27th with a craft fair/flea market, car show, entertainment, huge 50/50 drawing and concludes with Illinois’ oldest nighttime parade. Last year’s 50/50 raffle winner received $12,307! On behalf of the Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce, I would like to personally thank all our sponsors. The collective support of the Chamber makes this event not only a great attraction to our community but a staple of what people look forward to. We sincerely appreciate the time put forth by our volunteers and the gracious donations by our sponsors. Without your support Mardi Gras would not be as successful as it is today! I wish everyone a very happy and safe Halloween and hope everyone enjoys this year’s 90th annual Mardi Gras Celebration!

Sincerely,

Nathan MeagherPresident

Mardi Gras History

Mardi Gras Pageant The Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce is proud to sponsor the annual Mardi Gras pageant on Saturday, October 13 at the Pinckneyville Community High School at 7:00 p.m. Contestants will be competing for scholarship money totaling $2,400. Judging includes a private interview, swimsuit and evening gown competition. Interviews are conducted in the afternoon on the same day as the pageant. Candidates from Pinckneyville, Anna, West Frankfort, Belknap, Du Quoin and Murphysboro will be vying for the crown of 2012

Mardi Gras Queen. The overall Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Queen

scholarship pageant winner will take home a $1,500 scholarship award, while the second, third, fourth and fifth place winners will receive $500, $250, $100 and $50 respectively. Prizes will also be awarded for Miss Photogenic, Spirit of Mardi Gras and Miss Mask-erade. Miss Mask-erade is a special category unique to the event. Each candidate is asked to create a masquerade-style party mask and is expected to demonstrate creativity and the spirit for the event in decorating it.

The Pinckneyville Businessman’s Association is credited with beginning the Mardi Gras tradition through an advertisement in the Pinckneyville Advocate in 1922. At that time, the prime advertising avenue was posters that were placed on windows of businesses. The festivities of Mardi Gras were conducted on Halloween night, and included a parade and dance. The parade followed Walnut Street and circled around the courthouse. In addition, there were various costume contests around town, attracting participants with prizes. Since then, each year community members have conducted the festival at the end of October.

In the 1980s, themes were added to the celebration. Participants made floats and costumes in conjunction with the theme, although complying with the theme has never been a requirement. The 50/50 ticket sales have become one of the biggest attractions during the Mardi Gras celebration. In the late 1990s, the Chamber began making multiple rounds on the parade route selling 50/50 tickets. Music was played, and potential winnings were announced throughout the parade.

For 85 years, a Mardi Gras queen has been crowned. The tradition began with Hulda Schrader being crowed Miss Mardi Gras in 1925. The following year, candidates collected money; the contestant who collected the most became queen. The candidates sold chances on an item or cash prize. In 1926, votes were sold for 5 cents a piece. The Chamber provided dresses and shoes for the potential queens, along with a dress for the contestant who won the competition. A queen was crowned every year except during World War II in 1943 and 1944.

In 1999, the format of the pageant shifted for various reasons. The town of Pinckneyville was growing and the times had changed along with society. Not everyone felt that it was safe for the candidates to knock on doors of those who they did not know. The pageant

is now scholarship based. The competition is weighed on twenty-five percent evening gown, twenty-five percent swimsuit and fifty percent of the interview process.

An anonymous representation of Pinckneyville’s namesake, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, 1800 Federalist vice-presidential nominee, traditionally escorts the queen in the pageant and the parade.

The current tradition of Mardi Gras involves food, costumes and events for all ages. It is a time when current and former residents, as well as people from all over the region gather to have fun and reminisce. On the last Saturday in October, the streets of Pinckneyville are packed with community members, their families and residents of surrounding towns to partake in the celebration. In the last few years, the town’s Mardi Gras celebration has grown, adding more activities such as the Foundation for Pinckneyville sponsored Masquerade Party and Auction.

This is the Royal Cape worn by all the past Mardi Gras Queens of Pinckneyville. It was retired in 1997 when it was donated to the Perry County Jail Museum.

Queen’s Farewell One year ago I was standing on the stage with my heart pounding, praying that I would be lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be crowned the 2011 Mardi Gras Queen. You see, it was the last year I was eligible for this prestigious title and I wanted it more than anything. So much has happened since this beautiful crown was placed on my head. First and foremost I have gotten to know the friendly little town of Pinckneyville in a whole new light. Although Pinckneyville is an hour and a half away from my hometown of Dongola, every single time I came here I was welcomed with open arms. Whether I was wearing my crown walking through the streets or in a t-shirt and jeans at Subway, the people of Pinckneyville were always treating me like royalty. Tonight, looking back over the past year, I cannot thank the wonderful people of Pinckneyville enough. To my amazing pageant directors, Peggy and Erna, you are truly wonderful women. You both make

this pageant so much fun and unique and being your queen was a gift I don’t take for granted. Jennifer, thank you for showing me around the festival, helping me judge the car show, costume and pumpkin carving contests and always making me smile. To Jill, without you I would never be anywhere on time. We know this speech alone probably wouldn’t have gotten finished without your reminders. I am forever in debt to your astonishing organization, text messages and e-mails...thank you. Roger Brand, thank you for always making everything you do with the Mardi Gras pageant look spectacular. I know when you’re involved I will always look like royalty, you are an amazing man. Rachel Marks, we both know that without you I wouldn’t be standing here tonight. You always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, thank you. Nancy Spiller, oh where do I begin? Nancy, you have become so much more to me then my makeup and hair expertise. You are part of my heart and soul. I know I can come to you with any pageant dilemma and you will always have my back. Thank you so much for your time, patience and your love. Vicky Waterbury, let’s face it, without you I couldn’t look nearly as fierce on stage. Your incredible swimsuit designs and cocktail attire helped me snag my crown! Thank you. Lyndsey, people are always quick to point out our differences, but Lord knows how similar we are. I don’t know what I would do without my friend, only sister, and therapist. You are always right on my heels ready to back me up. And although I am your big sister and supposed to be your role model, too often you are the one I look up to, thank you and I love you. Mom and Dad, you have seen my tears of joy and sadness, you devote countless hours and too many dollars into helping me succeed in pageants and in life. Thank you both for putting up with my pageant mood swings, my eye rolls, last minute calls, and dealing with the endless drama involved in it all. I couldn’t ask for better parents, I love

you. Timmy, not many men could put up this the things you do for me. No matter what I need, you are always there and with a smile on your face. Continually lifting me up with the sweet notes left on my car, flowers for no good reason, and the time and energy you put into making me happy. I truly appreciate every bit of it. You are my number one, forever. I love you so, so much, thank you. To the new queen, please remember how lucky you are to receive this experience. Although, the next year will go by quickly don’t take a single second for granted. Meet as many people as you can and take too many pictures because this wonderful experience will be over all too quickly. Although, tonight I will be passing the crown onto the next lucky lady I will forever be your 2011 Mardi Gras Queen.

Behind the Scenes Lights, cameras, crowns…this is the most well-known part of the pageant world, but what about behind the “blinged” out curtain? We’ve all seen the movies where the girls are pulling each other’s hair and cutting one another’s dresses back stage. And let’s face it, there is no denying putting more than even 3 girls in a room together will cause drama, let alone throwing in the pressure of being judged on who is the “best” for the title. However, in my experience, these women brave enough to compete are all truly positive and driven young women. Looking back through history we have seen so many successful women emerge from pageantry. For example, Halle Berry, Oprah Winfery, and Diane Sawyer!! Pageants were developed to provide opportunities to women that wouldn’t have otherwise been given. With scholarships we are able to attend school and pursue our dreams. The interview portion provides insight and experience into the professional world. Even holding a title allows us to have a voice in our communities and stand up for things we are passionate about. Relationships are developed through pageants and lifelong connections are made. Finding similarities in one another and exploring each other’s differences are just some of the perks provided through these experiences. Meeting young women that inspire me and push me to be a better person is what I cherish most. Let alone the communities we become a part of. Over the past year, Pinckneyville has shared so much with me. Although, my home is over an hour away, I feel like a citizen of Pinckneyville. There is so much I have learned and shared

with this small community, making all the work I put into achieving this title worth it. Sharing simple experiences with the people in this town have earned it a special place in heart that will never be lost. Knowing that not everyone truly understands what the crown and sash represent is how and why pageants get a bad rap. I know that the impact of pageants may never be truly understood but that doesn’t belittle my experience. Sharing what makes this pageant and so many others special is just another gift that comes along with the crown. No one can take this past year’s opportunities away from me. I am and will forever be your 2011 Mardi Gras Queen.

~Maegan Elizabeth Ferguson

The Elusive Col. Pinckney Many people wonder who the masked man is that courts around the Mardi Gras queen during the festival. He is typically dressed in Colonial garb, wears a wig and is never heard but always seen. He escorts the previous years’ queen at the pageant and welcomes the new queen. The masked man also rides in the parade with the queen and poses for many pictures during the pageant and parade. He is rarely seen without his two footmen, who are dressed similarly in era, however not as prestigious as he. This masked man represents Colonel Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. He was a patriot, a leader at the Constitutional Convention, a soldier, lawyer and diplomat. In the 1800’s he moved to Illinois and was considered the richest man in the state, which is why Pinckneyville is named after him. Each year, Pinckneyville pays tribute to its namesake and has a community member dress as Colonel Pinckney during the Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras has became a very popular tradition of Pinckneyville as has having Colonel Pinckney and his footmen escort the Mardi Gras queen.
