peacock paradise by Mallory Gnaegy | Community Editor

Serene SanctuaryThe condrick Home

7119 Longboat Drive E.

Amid the peacocks roaming the Village sits a blue-and-white fisher-man’s cottage originally built in 1935, but that’s not the only reason the owner deemed it “Peacock Cottage.” Stepping inside, the decorations range from small peacock statues, subtle peacock-inspired col-ors, a peacock rug, peacock curtains, peacock feathers and any type of peacock accessory on which the owner could get her hands.

Aside from the peacock elements, it is decorated with Indonesian- and Asian-influenced treasures, all purchased locally. Many pieces are reminiscent of the time the owner spent living in Bali.

The small space is per-fectly utilized with hidden storage units and functional decorating. A small office she calls “the mermaid room” essentially looks like a closet, but what the eyes can’t see is a hidden bedroom tucked into the back corner. She doesn’t own a table for eating aside from a glass one she moves aside to practice Nia, an aerobic dance art.

After retiring, her goal was to downsize and simplify. She got rid of everything she owned and started new. This home became her sanctuary.

This Tibetan cabinet is from the early 20th century. Sacred items are meant to be stored inside. It was purchased at Blue Moon Antiques in Sarasota.

This chaise lounge is from Bali, and the previous owners were using it as a Television stand. Left: This is Quan Yin, the goddess of healing wisdom and compassion. This hand-carved granite statue is from Feng Shui Sarasota.

The fireplace is from the original home, but since has been converted to gas. Notice the pea-cock-inspired rug, curtains, pillows and feathers.

Photos by Mallory Gnaegy

“Peacock Cottage” features elements of teal, blue and purple, much like a peacocks feathers. This used to be a seasonal fisherman’s cottage and is now a residence.

The Kepecz-Hays Home

596 Halyard Lane

Every room of the Kepecz-Hays home has a southern exposure facing Sarasota Bay and the city skyline. And there’s no shortage of windows, which showcase the spectacular views.

The Florida-themed home revolves around a sand-and-sea color scheme. The color palette is predominantly sand beige, and the glass walls bring the beauti-ful blue-green hues of the bay indoors. Local artist Thornton Utz’s beach-inspired paintings are featured throughout the home.

The living room has glass cabi-nets and a coral-stone fireplace wall that allow for a view of the bay. The kitchen contains quartz countertops that sparkle in the Florida sun. The master bedroom contains 12-foot walls of glass from floor to ceiling with the bed facing the city, which gives the illusion of being outside. Adjoining the master suite is an enclosed outdoor shower.

The outside of the home is equally impressive. A dock pro-vides convenience for boaters and fishermen. An outdoor fire pit is perfect for socializing in the beautiful setting. And the infinity edge pool gives the illu-sion that the bay comes right up to the home. The first four feet of the pool is six inches deep, which allows the homeowners to relax in a lounge chair while they cool off in the hot summer months and take in the breath-taking view and watch the spec-tacular sunsets.

home & garden 5marCh 2012 YourObserver.com

The master bedroom, like the majority of the house, has no shortage of natural light. The window paneled home allows for open air flow and beautiful views.

The infinity edge pool has a shallow area where the homeowners can lounge in a few inches of water.

Stepping outside on the patio and taking in a view of the Sarasota skyline is one of the most impressive aspects of the home.

The sitting den with a queen-sized sofa bed is perfect for overnight guests or for reading a great book.

This home has spectacular views from every angle.

The Levine Home3445 Winding Oaks, Bay Isles

Even before entering the Levine home, you know sports enthusiasts reside here.

Next to the front door is a seat from the Cleveland Munipical Stadium, a facility razed several years ago.

Stepping inside, the sense of spa-ciousness is almost overwhelming. After acquiring the house several years ago, the Levines did extensive remodeling. Mrs. Levine wanted to make sure she could be part of the party — even if she was in the kitchen. The result is an open flow from the front door to the outside patio.

The dramatic black-and-white interior is spiked with bright-hued pillows and a custom rug made in Istanbul, which adds more color.

Black-and-white photos by Clyde Butcher and Ansel Adams, along with clown portraits from Mrs. Levine’s father’s collection, are found throughout the home. Photography is Mr. Levine’s hobby, and several of his works are also on display.

Art objects from the Levines’ trips to Vietnam, India and China are on display.

The two guest rooms, both with Maine Cottage furniture, present more color. One bedroom is bathed in bril-liant persimmon and the other in soft blues and greens.

The spacious master bedroom has a wide expanse of red patterned drapes covering windows, which reveal a water view.

The outdoors comes indoors with an intimate garden off the living room.

A secluded pool surrounded by tropi-cal plants plus a deck and adjacent patio add another dimension of casual living to this home.

VANTAGE POINT by Mallory Gnaegy | Community Editor

Expansive EscapeThe Trine Home5060 Gulf of Mexico Drive

The gates open to the impres-sive 11,000-square-foot home, named “Villa de Como,” after the Trines’ pet cat. It’s perfect for host-ing guests with its five bedrooms (most with private decks) and an amplitude of entertaining space for family and friends.

The family room greets visitors with a 25-foot ceiling decorated with a Strauss crystal chandelier, similar to the smaller one hang-ing in the spiraled foyer stairs and smaller ones scattered around the home’s coffered ceilings.

The seven-seat, La-Z-Boy home theater is perfect for a night of watching movies; the billiard room hosts a little friendly competition; the living room caters to more musically-inclined guests who might sing tunes around the former piano from The Colony Restaurant; and the gathering room is perfect for catching up with old friends on the Floridian-inspired printed chairs. But, perhaps the most impressive of entertaining features is the outdoor patio.

The colossal patio is home to an infinity pool that looks as if it continues into the Sarasota Bay. The space features many different seating options: Pull up a chair at the 10-person glass dining table or have a seat at the outdoor bar or on the fireside couch. All feature a remarkable view of the sparkling blue waters. Guests can dine on food prepared on the outdoor bar-becue or in the outdoor kitchen with ample counter space.

This gated home tends to slow drivers who try to catch a glimpse of the expansive home.

The foyer’s Strauss crys-tal chandelier is 10 feet tall.

Many cooks could fit in this kitchen with plenty of gran-ite counter space. A cabinet-paneled refrigerator and freezer are perfect for cooking for a house full of people.

The wood-paneled office sits in the middle of the first floor and has boating-inspired elements.

The second-floor guest room has its own private deck and mirrors the first-floor guest room in location, size and shape.

Nautical elements, such as this ceiling fan in the gathering room, give the modern home a beachy and relaxed feel.

The master bedroom contains his and hers bathrooms and closets. A sitting room and a deck overlooking the pool sits off the bedroom.

There is a master view off of the master bedroom. Though there are his and her bathrooms and closets, the deck is something they can share together.

There’s no need to leave the home when a bar and billiard table have their own room. Pool sharks can take on some friendly competition in this home.

The dining room’s grandeur shines with the crystal chandelier, coffered ceiling, wall of windows and elegant silk dining chairs.

original look by Mallory Gnaegy | Community Editor

Modernist MarvelThe garvin Home1310 Westway Drive, Lido Shores

The modernist-style Garvin home was originally built in 1953 by Philip Hiss, developer of Lido Shores. The building was used as his studio and sales office. Hiss lived across the street with his wife and children until 1962, when he built an addition onto the studio for the nanny and his children.

The home emphasizes a flow of air throughout and plays to open space. Guests enter the home through the marble-floored foyer, where a spiral staircase takes them to the second story, open-space studio. Architect Tim Seibert originally designed the studio. A library is the main focus of this room, featur-ing original shelving (and even original organizational tabs Hiss used to mark genres) and original light fixture com-plete with rheostat controls.

The Garvins decorated their home with furniture that stays true to the ’50s era and even kept some of the original furniture, such as the a blue-print desk in the studio office, and they kept as many of the 26 skylights as possible (there are still 23).

Bert Brosmith designed the addition, which is accessed downstairs through the foyer, and it practically goes unno-ticed when looking at the home from the street. The home contains four bedrooms and three bathrooms. A din-ing room with a 10-by-10 atrium and a sitting room with a wall of windows highlights natural beauty.

Three walled gardens with floodlights, copper gutters and impressive trees are built off of rooms in the addition; one tree is a bombax ellipticum and another is a royal poinciana. But the most impressive tree is the expansive banyan sitting in the home’s front yard.

The library sits 50 feet long and 30 feet wide. The oak bookshelves from the origi-nal Philip Hiss studio rest on the structural steel columns of the home. The cork-tiled floor, acoustic panels and chandelier are all from the original studio.

The living room features an Indian wool dhurrie rug with a Mondrian pattern. The plate glass picture window looks onto one of the walled gardens. It was originally solid Ocala block, but was later replaced.

The wood-paneled, cork-floored studio bath-room is authentic 1950s, featuring a yellow toilet and basin and a bathtub with corru-gated glass.

An oil painting called “Watching Paint Dry” by Sarasota artist Robert Shinn

The foyer is paneled in dark paldao wood and has a marble floor with an inset of Japanese river pebbles. The marble staircase leads to the Hiss Studio, and the foyer leads to the downstairs house.

restful retreat by Dora Walters | Senior Editor

Earthy Essencethe Bearden Home

5 Winslow Place, Buttonwood Harbor

Stepping through the doorway at the Bearden home, there is an instant sense of peace and tranquil-ity.

The interior walls are a soft, sooth-ing yellow, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

Throughout the house are neu-tral earth-toned furnishings with highlights of complementary color accents. Darker-hued chairs provide contrast blending with the overall décor.

A ceramic floral tile collage out-side the master bedroom adds a bit of color.

The compact and efficient kitchen has a wall of soft brown tile with dark brown counters.

The round, glass-topped dining room table has a natural rattan base. A table setting for four with orange napkins and brown floral plates con-tinues the overall house color theme.

The living room area, with several conversation areas, is spacious and opens onto a wide lanai overlooking the caged pool. Adjacent is a boat dock.

The Beardens are avid boat-ers, and they especially enjoy their home’s location on a bayou. It pro-vides easy access to Sarasota Bay.

Since acquiring the home three years ago, the Beardens have made extensive renovations. Walls were removed, and there is now a direct view of the bayou from the front entrance.

Mrs. Bearden describes the home as casual, easy-to-care-for and, best of all, a beautiful, restful retreat.

The Beardens’ dock and their 26-foot boat, SeaRay

A wrought-iron settee is placed near the outside entrance.

Colorful place settings brighten up the dining room.

The master bedroom is just off the lanai.

A beautiful buffet sits in the dining room.
