My first day on the job as

a reporter with the Register I

was introduced to the ladies

at the K-State Research and

Extension Southwind district

office.

It was in that office where

I received my first assignment

— interviewing 4-H kids who

were involved in the foods

project.

As a native of Houston, I

had heard of the Girl Scouts

and the Boy Scouts but never

had heard of 4-H clubs. I had

to do separate research on

the organization to better un-

derstand what these kids did.

I met 4-H’er after 4-H’er

and I learned that what I

thought of as the good ol’

fashioned childhood — veg-

ging out on the couch after

school and sleeping until noon

in the summer — was not part

of these kids’ everyday lives.

This blew my preconceived

thoughts of the organization

out of the water.

The project choices are

endless and initially seemed

like typical club-inspired activ-

ities — foods, sewing, leader-

ship, arts and crafts.

But then I

heard about

rocketry, buy-

manship, ani-

mals and ar-

chery. The

choices sound-

ed extreme —

but fun.

I was com-

pletely taken

back by how

busy these kids

stay, but most

important, how

4-H has helped

them succeed

later in life.

These proj-

ects make the

kids become

more outspoken

and comfortable

speaking pub-

licly. The kids I

have met through 4-H have

been some of the most well

spoken kids I have ever met,

making me wish I had been in-

volved in 4-H, having been a

shy kid when I was their age.

The other surprise of 4-H is

the family involvement.

Being in a 4-H club is not

just something for the kids —

it’s a family effort.

Siblings, parents and even

grandparents have been in

4-H before the kids who are in

the clubs today.

Current 4-H’ers pick the

minds of their moms, dads,

aunts, uncles and grand-

parents for ideas for proj-

ects and most important-

ly how they can get that

purple ribbon.

Getting to know the

4-H organization more

and more, I have felt like

I missed out on one of

life’s little known trea-

sures.

Briann Burris is experienc-ing a summer of lasts. The last day of high school. Now comes the last day of serving as president of City Slickers 4-H club.

Burris feels a sense of ac-complishment as she thinks back over the years with City Slickers. With such a young and relatively inexperienced group of fellow members, older youths like Burris saw it as their duty to get the club in a position to be able to sustain itself.

“I think the thing I’m most proud of is getting the younger kids interested and keeping them going,” Burris said. “We’ve been a young group and I know it’ll con-tinue to grow.”

As presi-dent, Bur-ris has been instrumental in getting the group on track for the fast ap-proaching fair.

“I’ve just tried to be a positive influ-ence on the kids we have,” Burris said.

“It’s been a lot of fun to see some of them really learn and develop under the leadership we’ve provided.”

For her final fair appear-ance as a competitor, Burris is going to show pigs. She spent time like many of the other serious competitors traveling the area during the spring event season showing her livestock.

“It’s my last year so I’m hoping that I get a good showing there,” Burris said. “I’m just going to stay posi-tive and however I do I’ll be happy.”

Burris is also considering putting the money she earns at auction this year toward a charity of some kind, yet to be determined.

After the fair Burris will spend the rest of the sum-mer preparing for a move

to Manhattan where she will attend classes at Kansas State University in the fall.

Each morning the Hopkins home becomes a whirlwind of activity. The boys, Gus, 14, Elijah,11 and Isaac, 8, start out the day tending to their investments.

While the cattle and hogs that they show might be purchased by their parents, the trio of 4-H members sees it as an investment in their present and future at the same time.

“We make a deal with them,” their mother, Nancy, said. “We help pay for every-thing and when they go to

show and sell at auction they get to keep the money they make.”

This arrangement is put in place to both inspire and teach, according to Nancy. The young men work hard each day with their charges to earn awards which hope-fully translate to better sales at auction. The lessons learned about hard work and earning something through self-discipline is something the family enjoys.

Gus has used his natural skills in the livestock field to

explore possible careers. In addi-tion to showing and earning several awards along the way,

Gus has be-come adept in the livestock judging field as well. The self-professed University of Kansas fan is turning his eyes westward for possible educa-tional opportu-nities.

“I’ll probably end up going to K-State or Emporia State,” Gus said. “They have the kinds of programs I want to get into, but I’ll still be a Jayhawk fan.”

Elijah and Isaac still have many more spring show sea-

sons ahead of them before they will start contemplating such things. Right now they spend their time preoccupied with learning to push their four-legged charges as they strive to become as accom-

plished as their older brother.

The main thing that the three boys are looking forward to are competing and representing the family well.

“We’re just look-ing forward to a great Allen County fair,” Gus said. “We want to do our best and hopefully it’ll work out for all of us.”

Clowns, thrill rides and plenty of family entertain-ment — that’s the Allen County Fair Rodeo.

Leading into the 119th annual Allen County Fair’s run next week at Iola’s Riverside Park, the two-night rodeo is Friday and Saturday. The 27th annual Allen County Fair Ro-deo’s performances are at 8 o’clock each night at the Lyle Dreher Roughriders Arena.

Tickets for each perfor-mance can be purchased at the gate for $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-10. Chil-dren age 5 and younger will be admitted free when with a paid adult.

It will take two event tickets per adult and one per child to attend the rodeo. The annual fair rodeo is spon-sored by B&W Trailer Hitches, Humboldt and Twin Motors Ford, Iola.

The Allen County rodeo is sanctioned by the United

Rodeo Associa-tion (URA) and the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association (MRCA).

C.R. McKel-lips Rodeo Company of Raymore, Mo., is back supply-ing the rough stock. McKel-lips also brings in the bull-fighters, the pickup men,

announcer and specialty act for the event.

Allen County’s mutton busters will hit the rodeo arena at 6:30 each night. Registration is at 5:30 p.m. plus there was an early regis-tration period. There is room for 60 mutton busters — 30 each night before the rodeo performances. The top five mutton busters will ride again during the rodeo. The sheep

are provided by McKellips Rodeo Company.

For boys and girls ages 7 and under, Friday has the boot/shoe race and Saturday features a stick horse race. The boot/shoe race has each child taking off one boot or shoe, putting in the pile at the center of the rodeo arena then it’s off to the races. The first three children to find their boot or shoe, put it on and cross the finish line will receive cash prizes.

In Sat-urday’s stick horse race the first three children to cross the finish line with their stick horses will win

cash prizes. Boys and girls are encouraged to bring their own stick horses to ensure entry into the race but the fair board will provide some stick horses.

For boys and girls ages 8 to 12, both nights of the rodeo will have a chicken scramble. Chickens will be released in the arena and each kid who catches a chicken has the op-tion of keeping it or trading it in for cash.

Ethan and Katie Weide have their plates almost too full with all the proj-ects they have taken on for the fair, but with the help of their family members they think they might just get every-thing done.

In his second year competing at fair, Ethan, 8, has taken on arts and crafts, sewing, woodworking, buymanship, cooking and rocketry for his projects.

His favorite is woodworking because “I get to use tools,” he said. Ethan spends a lot of time with his dad at work, who is in construction, and there he can use some of the tools he needs for his woodworking.

For arts and crafts, Ethan wants to build a dump truck, bulldozer and a tow truck, also a project he can work on while spending time with his dad at work.

Ethan has a good grasp on buymanship explaining that when he buys an outfit he might pair it up with a

pair of shoes that are on sale to save money.

He has not completely figured out what he will do for his rocketry proj-ect but his idea is to make a poster explaining how to building and shoot off a rocket.

Sewing is the project that takes up the most time, “a couple of weeks to get everything done,” he said. His project will be a fleece jacket.

Katie, 11, is a veteran of the shows and can show her brother the ropes on how to get prepared for the fair. This year Katie has taken on eight projects.

Her projects are arts and crafts, cooking, buymanship, sewing, astrono-my, reading, recreation and woodwork-ing.

Being in her fifth year of shows, Katie is not a stranger to the fair routine.

She already has her outfits set up for buymanship and knows what to expect from the judges.

After modeling the outfits and showing that the clothes fit properly “They ask questions like ‘how would you wash the out-fit?’ ‘where did you get it?’ and ‘was it on sale?,’” she said.

Her clothing themes will revolve around bright colors, back to school and hippie, she said.

For her astronomy project she will be using some of the work she has already done in school. “I will glue together the solar system I’ve already made for class and make a poster with information,” Katie said.

For Katie’s arts and crafts project she will either be making a “clock, like my first year, a little mini rocking chair or a bird bath to put on our front porch,” she said.

Both Ethan and Katie, though busy, enjoy being part of 4-H and find the feeling of making something rewarding. “You feel like you have achieved some-thing bigger than anything you could have ever done,” Katie said.

It is only fitting that Emily, Bran-

don and Casey McKarnin enter in the

animal projects for the fair since their

daily chores revolve around taking care

of horses, goats, dogs, cats and even

geese.

Brandon and Casey, in their second

year of the fair, will both be showing a

dog and a goat for their project.

They prefer to show the dogs because

the goats are difficult to manage. “They

don’t listen to you, and they are just

hard-headed,” Brandon said.

The boys take turns feeding the dogs,

and leave the other animals to their big

sister Emily.

Emily, 14, and in her eighth year in

4-H, will be showing two horses, two

dogs, three goats, photography and arts

and crafts.

Two times a day Emily goes out back

to feed and take care of the animals. She

also does district competitions with the

horses and just got back from a com-

petition where she showed her horse

Chip.

Chip will be one of the horses Emily

will be showing at the fair.

Emily explained that when she is

showing her horses the judges don’t

ask many questions, but they do ask

her how much she feeds them and

asks her to show their teeth and nails

during the show.

For her non-animal related projects

Emily plans to enter the projects she

has worked on in school to cut down

on some preparation time.

in 4-H as a kid, but she has become

involved because Em-

ily was spending so

much time with the

club. “It seemed like

I was down there all

the time anyway, so I

joined the fair board,”

she said.

Belonging to 4-H encourages Klair and Shannon Vogel to experiment with new projects.

For this year’s county fair Shannon, 16, will enter four drawings, using three different mediums.

“Two are pastels, one is with acrylic paint and the other is done with graph-ite,” she said. “It’s the first time I’ve done pastels all alone and the first time I’ve experimented with graphite.”

Her acrylic painting of a pumpkin in a patch is also her first experience with an impressionist style of art, she said.

Shannon, a junior at Iola High School, will also show her Suffolk lamb at the fair and has her dog Oscar, a Lab, entered in dog obedience, and her dog London, a miniature dachshund, entered for showmanship.

“London can’t sit still, so she’s best at showmanship,” she said of the three-year-old.

Shannon is president of Square B 4-H Club.

“There’s a lot of nice people in 4-H,” she said. “It’s fun. I also like it because I meet a lot of people with similar

interests and it’s a place where we can develop new skills and interests.”

Shannon plans to pursue a ca-reer in art education at Pittsburg State University.

Klair’s interests are in entymol-ogy and photography. She will enter two bug boxes in the fair. The large cercropia moths are the most rare of her bugs.

“Leaving the barn light on at night” is her secret to catching a wide variety of flying insects, she said.

Klair, 14, also is becoming an avid photographer and has several pho-tos she’ll submit for fair competition including nature and scuptures. She, too, has a market lamb she’ll enter at next week’s fair.

Klair, a freshman at IHS, has her sites on becoming a meteorologist.

She serves as vice president for Square B.

HUMBOLDT — Clay Shan-non, 9, is a full-blown cow-boy.

He’s perfectly comfort-able atop his horse, Smoke, a buckskin quarter horse. Cow-boy boots, including spurs, are as natural as flip-flops. And while it may not be a

10-gallon size, his cowboy hat is well-worn.

Clay is the oldest of three sons of Amy and Derrick who live east of Humboldt on Hawaii Road. He belongs to Logan Pals 4-H Club. His young-er brother, Curt, 5, belongs to

Clover Buds, a pre-4-H club for siblings of regular members. Sure to follow is Creed, 4, the youngest brother.

In addition to showing his horse, Clay will also show his goat, White Pants, at the up-coming fair, as well as pigs.

For his woodworking project he is building an insu-

lated doghouse “with a porch,” for his dog Cobra, a short-haired German shepherd.

Through 4-H he’s also learned hunting and gun safety as well as fishing techniques.

For arts and crafts, he’s building a pinball game and a machine that “picks up mag-nets.”

Clay’s biggest adven-ture with 4-H this year is attending its four-

day summer camp in Rock Springs.

“It was a blast,” Clay said of his first time away from home alone.

Canoeing on a big lake and participating in a scavenger hunt using a GPS device were memorable camp events.

He also belongs to Rough Riders, a sub-group of 4-H that deals with horses, and which his mother is a leader. Through Rough Riders Clay

has traveled to various cities including McPherson, Newton and Rock Springs, to partici-pate in horse-related activi-ties including showmanship and the care of horses.

Although he eventually sees himself as a mechanical engineer specializing in cars, Clay is content with the four-legged mode of transporta-tion for the time being.

Clay is a second-genera-tion 4-H’er.

HUMBOLDT — Abby and Zoey Rinehart have their 4-H focus primarily on arts and crafts, although they’re dedi-cated to ensuring their pigs stay healthy for the upcoming Allen County Fair.

Zoey’s primary love is woodworking. At 11, she’s comfortable handling a drill and scroll saw that her dad, Dean, uses in his business, Dean Rinehart Construction. Her favorite woods are oak and walnut. “They have a lot of grain,” she said of the hard woods.

Her other interests include fashion construction and modeling and photography.

Zoey serves as a council rep-resentative of Logan Pals, the largest 4-H club in the state, she said.

Abby, 8, is songleader for the group. Her interests are painting and fashion, includ-ing buyman-ship and con-struction. She’s entering a

bold-colored pil-low case in this year’s fair.

Of the two, Zoey sees her future in agricul-ture.

“I love the farm life,” she said. “I like the quiet, and the fact that our dogs can roam free.”

Abby pictures herself in a more urban environment,

mentioning that her favorite TV show is “Tiaras and Tod-dlers.”

“I don’t like to get muddy,” Abby said.

The most appealing part of country life for Abby is the barn where she has lots of kit-tens.

MORAN — Karlie Stephens has a soft spot for misfits.

Especially when she wins with them.

Stephens, 11, has taken “misfit” calves — those or-phaned at birth — to great success at the Allen County Fair.

“The year be-fore last, my calf didn’t have a tongue,” she said. Last year’s had a deformed tail.

Oh, and she’s won grand championships with both.

S t e p h e n s , daughter of George and Lori Stephens of ru-ral Moran, is on a three-year grand

champion winning streak in bucket calf. (She took the re-serve champion her first year with the fair.)

The key may be in the amount of time Stephens spends with her animals. She walks her calf twice a day, leads it with a show stick,

washes it twice weekly and gives it plenty of time to rest.

Stephens’ fair schedule is packed with other activities.

She’ll again show her pigs (she was overall reserve champion last year), as well as her gardening, provided the searing summer heat cooper-ates, and will enter a quilt as part of the fiber arts competi-tion.

Up to now, Stephens’ sum-mer has been filled with softball, dance and volleyball camp.

But now the fair preparation takes center stage. After that is the state fair and the Junior Livestock Show in Wichita in late September.

Her parents are on hand to assist with chores if Ste-

phens is busy with her other activities. And she’s relied on quilting lessons from her grandmother to help with two quilts, one with Kansas State University Wildcat de-cor, the other an orange and black piece dedicated to Mar-maton Valley, where she’ll be a sixth-grader.

Stephens also is preparing a special dance piece with sev-eral of her fellow Cooper Stu-dios Dance Center students during a free performance during fair week.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun.”

MORAN — The folks at Weight Watchers probably aren’t too keen on Trent Johnson’s aim for the upcom-ing Allen County Fair — par-ticularly for his steers.

Johnson wants his animals to gain weight. Lots of it. He uses simple economic logic.

“Rate of gain is my grand championship. That’s what I’m gunning for,” said John-son, 15-year-old Prairie Rose 4-H member.

Rate of gain, literally, compares an animal’s current weight compared to what it weighed when a 4-H’er began caring for the animal. More weight equals more money when an animal is sent to market.

Johnson supplies his steers

with generous helpings of feed daily. He also works with the animals, by walking them, leading them with a show stick and regularly cleaning and grooming them.

Johnson has had to make adjustments because of the searing Kansas heat, doing most of the walking in the early morning or late evening hours.

“They’ve been dealing with the heat,” Johnson said. “When you have 100-de-gree days, and 1,300-pound steers, it’s kind of hard on them.”

“If they keep eating like they have, I think I have a shot to get the rate of gain” championship, he said. “But you have to be lucky, too.”

After all, dozens of other 4-H members are doing the same with their steers, he noted.

Johnson, son of Jeff and Laura Johnson of rural Moran, also plans to enter his two horses, Spook, and Dunn, a 20-year-old quar-ter horse.

This will be the first year Johnson has entered Spook. With Dunn, he took home a reserve champion prize in a trail riding contest.

“Spook is doing very well for as young as he is,” Johnson said, of the 4-year-old quar-ter horse.

Aside from his animals, Johnson

is most eager to visit with friends, check out other exhibits, and, this year in particular, participate in the annual Water Wars, a massive water-balloon fight near the end of the fair. “My philoso-phy on everything is to go out and have fun,” he said, “and hopefully do well.”
