Some of the carnival rides at the Douglas County Fair offer hair-raising enjoyment.
TERESA MIDDLETONFor The News-Review
very August hundreds of 4-H’ersaround Douglas County spend aweek at fair showcasing the projectsthey have worked on.
Hands-on learning is 4-H’s motto andwhat better way for children to learn thanby doing? They get a wonderful sense ofaccomplishment and responsibility whenthey complete something they haveworked on and are able to display it forothers to enjoy.
When the public views the 4-H exhibitsat fair, what they are seeing is the culmina-tion of months of work, effort and care thatthe youth has invested in their projectwhether it is an article of clothing or ananimal project. We hope that the public
enjoys viewing the exhibits as much as theyouth had while doing them.
Many members will be filling the barnswith their animal projects they have beenraising. This year 4-H members are bring-ing 104 beef projects and 179 swine proj-ects.
Both 4-H and FFA members will be par-ticipating in Rotary’s Market Auction onFriday night with 85 market steers and 171market hogs slated for auction.
Rounding out the large animal projectsare 14 dairy cattle and 84 horses. Over-flowing barns are a nice problem to haveto deal with. It shows that youth are will-ing to take on projects that require workand dedication and they are proud to showthe public what they have been able toaccomplish.
Between the 150sheep and 50 goatentries, the sheep barnwill offer a variety ofbreeds for the publicviewing. The small ani-mal barn will be ‘hop-ping’ with 144 rabbitsand cavies (guinea pigs)and 104 poultry exhibits.Small animals are agood place for young 4-H members to gainexperience and aware-ness of what it means tobe responsible for ananimal. They are alsogood projects for youththat may not have the land to raise thelarger animals. Forty-three dogs will beparticipating with their human 4-H mem-bers in such competitions as showmanship, obedience and agility during fair week.
Over 800 static exhibits will be displayedin the Exhibit Building as well as table set-ting and food competitions, robotic demon-strations and public presentations. Therewill also be a tractor exhibit and a chickincubator exhibit, with the chicks sched-
uled to start hatching Wednesday. We invite you to check out the Douglas
County 4-H Fair Premium Book for theschedules of shows and competitions dur-ing the week. Thank you to all who sup-port the youth of our county.
