Our MissionGirl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
The Girl Scout PromiseOn my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout law.
The Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be
honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, andresponsible for what I say and do,
And torespect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
“ Girl Scouts changed my life because I see myself better than I was before. I find myself expressing myself more. We go camping, we sell cookies, candy, and we take trips. I love Girl Scouts because I meet new people.”

Dear Friends:As the leading authority on girl development, we are in the business of girls! Our Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) has done an extensive amount of research around girls and leadership. Through this research, we know the impact that Girl Scouting is having on our girls both in their community and in the classroom. The three Girl Scout processes: Girl-led, learning by doing, and cooperative learning is having a positive effect on how well girls are performing academically. We also know that girls see themselves as leaders now and want to lead in the future, provided leadership is defined by their own terms (inclusive leading) and not in the traditional definition (top down) of the word.
Girl Scouts of Western New York has joined Girl Scouts of the USA in adopting five advocacy platforms (financial literacy, healthy living, environmental leadership, global citizenship, and science, technology engineering and math, or STEM) not only in our programming but in having meaningful dialog with elected officials about key insights and trends in these areas.
In having discussions with stakeholders within our nine county region, many agree that there is not an adequate pipeline of women pursuing careers in STEM. We have focused much of our attention on giving girls an opportunity to explore and develop an interest in STEM. As a result, we were given a wonderful opportunity to partner with National Grid to host a STEM community forum and panel discussion for our Girl Scouts. The purpose of the event was to begin the conversation on how to encourage more girls to consider careers in STEM. We convened a group of girls who heard firsthand from women who are currently working in STEM-related industries. Special thanks to all the dynamic women who participated on our panel.
In today’s economy, it is important for girls to be confident and knowledgeable in how they handle money. Currently, 90 percent of girls want to learn how to handle money but only 12 percent feel “very confident” when making financial decisions. Girls are learning their economic ABCs through our Girl Scout Cookie Program as well as our QSP nuts and candy sale. These fundraising opportunities directly develop money management and entrepreneurial skills among the other essential skills (Goal Setting, Business Ethics, Decision Making, and People Skills) girls develop.
Naturalist and conservationist John Muir said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” This quote sums up how our girls feel about the environment in which they live and play. I’m happy to announce that we just received the results of a nationwide “go green” effort. In celebration of our 100th anniversary, girls and volunteers planted rain gardens in our jurisdiction. The national results showed that through the efforts of our girls here in WNY and across the Movement, we were able to save 639 kilowatts of energy, conserve more than 226 gallons of water, eliminate one billion pounds of carbon dioxide and 120 million pounds of waste total, recycle 409,940 aluminum cans, plant 123,753 native plants/trees, and feed and shelter 2,462 wildlife by rain gardens. What a tremendous accomplishment!
Girls can make the world a better place by caring not only for those around them but for those around the globe. The Girl Scout Hippie Pandas, a First League Lego team, is an excellent example. Several years ago, they created a milk pasteurization system for women who were experiencing high rates of miscarriages in Nicaragua. Due to their concern for the welfare of people in Haiti, the Hippie Pandas recently designed a bed boat that will allow Haitians to remain safe during hurricanes and flooding. The boat not only provides a safe haven during flooding, but also includes a compartment for food and clothing. The team is presently competing at the World Festival for this creation.
In Girl Scouting, we believe in promoting the “whole girl.” The Be a Friend First (BFF) program addressed the challenges that girls face with bullying. The program not only equipped girls with how to handle situations when they are bullied, but reinforced our Girl Scout Law of “be a sister to every Girl Scout.” Girls are using these same principles when being bullied via social media.
Lastly, community service is a cornerstone of Girl Scouts and I am proud to announce that we had 64 girls earn the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award and 159 girls earned the Girl Scout Silver Award.
Girl Scouts of Western New York is committed to developing girl leadership within our nine county jurisdiction. There are exciting things happening every day in our council. Thank you to everyone for your hard work and dedication. We appreciate you.
Warmest Regards,
Cindy L. Odom Chief Executive Officer, GSWNY
Judith A. Maness Chair, Board of Directors
While heritage and tradition are important components of Girl Scouting, Girl Scouts of Western New York kept its eye to the future during the 2012-2013 year, leading multiple efforts that benefitted not only Girl Scouts, but the community at large.
As part of its STEM Community Stakeholder Forum, GSWNY brought together a number of community stakeholders to discuss an important issue: A lack of young women pursuing careers in the vital fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). College professors, engineers, Girl Scout leaders, and guests attended the event, sponsored by National Grid. Cindy Odom, CEO of GSWNY, and Judith Dunn, human resources director at National Grid, shared research and insights, and roundtable discussions allowed attendees to learn more about the issue while also talking about solutions. Following the adult portion of the event, more than 50 girls attended a STEM Girl Forum. This event featured five female panelists who currently work in various STEM fields. They shared with the girls what they do in their careers and then they answered the girls’ questions.

“Before I came to Girl Scouts I always had an attitude. People always told me I would not get anything done in life if I lived with an attitude. After my first two Girl Scout meetings I stopped having an attitude. I like Girl Scouts because they taught me a lot about respect.”
Abreannah, Cadette
To help share with the community some of the many benefits of Girl Scouting, GSWNY hosted Our Promise to Girls, a fundraising breakfast that took place in Buffalo. Both a young Girl Scout and a former Girl Scout and staff member spoke to the crowd, explaining how Girl Scouting has helped them. The event also included a video presentation in which three girls told how Girl Scouting impacted their lives. It was a special, moving way to celebrate Girl Scouts with others who value encouraging and empowering girls to be leaders in their own lives.
Girl Scouts of Western New York welcomed Judy Smith to Western New York for the Leadership Speaker Series in Buffalo and the Leadership Breakfast Series in Rochester. Smith, who is considered America’s number one crisis management expert, has consulted for a number of high-profile clients and is the inspiration and co-producer of the ABC television show Scandal. Hundreds of community members came out to hear Smith share what she has learned from helping celebrities, politicians, and businesses emerge from crisis situ-ations. Any person – male or female, old or young – can face a crisis situation. Community members who attended the Leadership Breakfast Series or Leadership Speaker Series left with stories and ideas of how to overcome crises with tact.
Before closing out the 2012-2013 year, Girl Scouts rallied adults across the nation with a video from First Lady Michelle Obama, the honorary national president of Girl Scouts. Starting in 1917 with Edith Bolling Wilson, the First Lady of the United States has always served as Honorary President of Girl Scouts. In her video, First Lady Michelle Obama encouraged everyone to consider volun-teering. Whether making a long-term commitment or giving just an hour of time, every minute makes a difference in the lives of thousands of girls.
First Lady Michelle Obama created a video for Girl Scouts to encourage adults to volunteer.
Judith A. Maness, chair of the board of directors for GSWNY, spoke at the Our Promise to Girls Breakfast.

Latonya Plummer shared how Girl Scouts has impacted her at the Our Promise to Girls Fundraising Breakfast.

“ Being a Girl Scout has made a big difference in my life. I’m a shy person and every time I do community service I grow more confident. Helping people made my life better because I know that they feel good inside just like I do.”

“Girl Scouting is more than just selling cookies. Girl Scouting has become an integral part of my life, and ultimately part of my identity. Having been a Girl Scout since I was in first grade, I have grown up internalizing the mottos of ‘respecting myself and others,’ and ‘making the world a better place,’ among the tenets of the Girl Scout Law. It is this law, as well as the stressed virtues of integrity and honesty, that have helped shaped the person I am today.”
- Claire, Ambassador
Volunteers play a vital role in empowering the next generation of girls, and GSWNY greatly appreciates the hours they contribute to building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. To honor and thank volunteers, GSWNY held its Adult Recognition Luncheon at Samuel’s Grande Manor in Williamsville. During the luncheon, volunteers received a heartfelt thank you from a Girl Scout, Claire Raab, who shared with the audience how Girl Scouting and the Girl Scout volunteers in her life have impacted her. Volunteers were honored with the Commitment to Excellence Award, Smart Cookie Award, Thanks Badge, Honor Pin, Appreciation Pin, Outstanding Volunteer Award, Outstanding Leader Award, Volunteer of Excellence Award, Years of Service Award, Tenure Award, and President’s Award. Congratulations to all of the volunteers who were honored.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award girls can earn in Girl Scouting. To achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award, girls must complete a minimum of 80 hours toward a project that has a lasting impact on the community.
GSWNY is proud to announce we had 64 talented young women “go for the gold” during the 2012-2013 year.

Girl Scout Magazines & Munchies Program
The Girl Scout Magazines & Munchies Program provides Girl Scouts and their troops a chance to fundraise for their activities, reaching out primarily to friends and family. Girls sell magazine subscriptions and food items, such as honey roasted peanuts and chocolates. Another level of this program is Project Share, through which customers can give a $5 donation to send a magazine voucher to a veterans hospital patient or a nut product to a man or woman serving in the Armed Forces overseas or in Western New York.
Through the spring 2013 Project Share Program, Girl Scouts of Western New York donated more than 1,330 cans of nuts to the Niagara Falls Air Force Base as well as more than 200 magazines to the VA Hospitals in Buffalo and Batavia.
Because of the generosity of the community, Girl Scouts learned important financial literacy skills and raised money for their activities while also helping to bring happiness to our veterans and their families!

2012-2013 Program
HighlightsCourage, confidence, and character are what we strive to instill in every girl who becomes a member of Girl Scouts of Western New York. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a programming model designed to promote leadership skills throughout each step in Girl Scouting. Girls discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place.
Women of Distinction Mentoring Program & Girl Forum Signature ProgramGirls in grades 9 through 12 had an exciting opportunity to participate in the Women of Distinction Mentoring Program and Girl Forum. Girls partnered with phenomenal women leaders who serve as mentors and role models for the girls. Many of those mentor/mentee relationships last well beyond the evening of the Women of Distinction Awards ceremony.
The Girl Forum is an opportunity for girls to interact with one of the evening’s honorees through a question and answer format.
During the evening of the Women of Distinction Awards ceremony, girls served as ambassadors, presenters, and mistress of ceremonies.
Only 21% of girls believe they
currently have most of the key qualities
to be a good leader. However, over 90%
of girls say they want to or would not mind being leaders.

Hippie PandasGSWNY First Lego League (FLL) Hippie Pandas Group won the Champion’s Award at the Finger Lakes Regional Championship. The FLL Champion’s Award is the most prestigious award that an FLL team can win. It measures how the team members inspire and motivate others about the excitement of science and technology, solve problems, and demonstrate respect and gracious professionalism to everyone involved in the competition.
Last year’s challenge was entitled, “Nature’s Fury Be Prepared, Stay Safe and Rebuild.” The Hippie Pandas designed a floating bed boat to assist families impacted by hurricanes and flooding in Gonaive, Haiti.

The Girl Scout organization is not only known for Girl Scout cookies but also for the camping opportunities it provides to girls. The 2012-2013 camping season ended with a 10% increase over the previous year.
Girls enjoyed approximately 20 new programs at our overnight camp facilities, and at Camp Piperwood a new ropes course was added.
Due to the generous grants that GSWNY received from the United Way of Rochester and the Erie County Youth Bureau, we were able to serve more girls in our summer camp program.
• Served 40 girls through the Erie County grant
• Served 119 girls through the Monroe County grant
• Camp Piperwood had an88% increase in attendance
• Camp Timbercrest had a13% increase in attendance
• Camp Seven Hills/Lakeside had an 18% increase in attendance
