ROBIN SALTERS

A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 graduate of the university, Robin Salters con-tinues to uphold the proud winning tradition of UNH volleyball started by her former head coach and program founder, Deborah Chin. Since taking over as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has posted a .773 winning percentage in 17 seasons. She continues to lead the UNH women’s volleyball program to high-level success, with 2008’s NCAA Elite Eight appearance counting as the 14th NCAA bid in her 16 seasons. Including her 27 wins a season ago, she stands just 19 wins away from her 500th, placing her in the top 15 in both wins and winning percentage in NCAA Division II history.

Salters was chosen as the 2008 AVCA East Region Coach of the year after being named 2006 East Coast Conference and AVCA North-east Region Coach of the Year. In 2010, Salters earned her fi rst Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honoe, after leading the Chargers to their third-straight undefeated conference sea-son. The Chargers hosted the 2008 NCAA East Regional at Charger Gymnasium for the second time in three years, and Salters guided UNH to the regional title and a spot in the Elite Eight.

Salters opened her coaching career by taking UNH to the NCAA Tournament on ten straight occasions from 1994 to 2003, including six berths in the NCAA Elite Eight and six confer-ence championships. Salters guided UNH to the Elite Eight in her fi rst four seasons and fi ve of her fi rst six.

Salters has steadily moved up the NCAA Division II all-time wins list, recording her 100th win in her third season, her 200th win in her fi fth season and win number 300 in her ninth season. Her second victory of the 2008 season marked her 400th, while her 500th isn’t far away.

Salters became head coach at New Haven in 1994 after serving as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University in 1993. Previously, she coached the Junior Olympics team for the Western Michigan Volleyball As-sociation. While earning her Master’s degree at

Western Michigan University, she also coached the Kalamazoo Central High School freshman team.

A former player at Lake Michigan College where she earned an associate of arts degree, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the starting setter in 1989 and 1990. During her playing career at UNH, she earned all-Region honors and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 1990-91 academic year. She concluded her career by winning the University’s NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 1991.

An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Salters has served as the chair of the All-Northeast Regional selec-tion committee, was a member of the Division II Head Coaches Committee, and a voter for the organization’s weekly Top-25 poll. Robin has also served for 12 years as a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, including eight years as chair. In 2009 she served as the national chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Selection Committee. In 2009 Salters was also inducted into the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Salters is also UNH’s Senior Woman Admin-istrator and Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities.

Life in the Balance. As a NCAA Division II institution, our emphasis for the student-athlete experience is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. Our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.

Why a Hexagon? The hexagon is a representation of the six attributes that define the Division II experience. Those attributes are learning, passion, resourcefulness, sportsmanship, service and balance. The hexagon is an iconic symbol that can be utilized to express these attributes.

WHO ARE WE?

LearningWe provide multiple opportunities to broaden knowledge and skills.

ServiceWe develop positive societal attitudes through contributions to community.

PassionWe possess enthusiastic dedication and desire in effort.

SportsmanshipWe have a respect for fairness, courtesy and ethical conduct toward others.

ResourcefulnessWe develop a versatile skill set drawn from a broad range of experiences.

BalanceWe place emphasis on collective knowledge and an integration of skills.

WHAT DO WE STAND FOR?

“Growing up in a highly sports involved family where academics was very important, allowed me to understand early that prioritizing and balancing my responsibilities and extracurricular activities would be essential to my success. Therefore, when it came time for me to decide where to go to college, the choice was easy. I Chose the University of New Haven because I knew it not only had my academic program of interest, but it was a Division II institution and quite successful in women’s volleyball. These qualities made UNH stand above the rest. After doing more research, I realized that Division II athletics were greatly concerned with balancing time demands by emphasizing the “Life in the Balance.” When I looked at the whole picture, picking a University that not only embraced the D-II values, but worked on actually implementing and bettering those values seemed most suitable for me. I knew that I would be able to continue to improve my time management skills, study Biology and play women’s volleyball at the next level. All of this is why I Chose Division II and the University of New Haven.”

2011 2011 PREVIEWPREVIEWThe University of New Haven women’s volleyball team enters the 2011 season with high hopes for another successful campaign. Coming off their third-straight perfect regular season in the Northeast-10 Conference and their 25th appearance to the NCAA Tournament, the Chargers return fi ve members of the 2010 squad. The experience of four seasoned veterans will anchor the Chargers starting lineup, including seniors Heather Ladao, Chelsey Alpough and Elizabeth Akinbiyi.

In addition to the returners on the court, Robin Salters enters her 18th season as the Chargers’ head coach. Salters was named the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year after leading New Haven to another undefeated NE-10 regular season. Also a six-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Coach of the Year, she continues to rank among the top active NCAA Divi-sion II coaches in the nation. With 19 more wins this season, Salters will claim her 500th career victory.

“We are confi dent in our recruiting class and have a lot more depth than in previous seasons,” said Salters. “We’re looking for some of the new players to be able to step in and show us what they can do right away.”

OffenseTwo-time Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Year, Alpough will run the offensive attack for the third-straight season. The senior was an All-Region selection and an All-Conference First Team honoree last season. She started all 30 matches and fi nished second in the NE-10 with 1,100 assists (10.48 per game). The Torrance, Calif. native also collected 82 kills, 232 digs, 61 blocks and 38 aces in 2010. Kaulana Ane, a freshman from Paia, Hawaii, will add depth at to the setter position and possibly see time as a hitter as the season progresses.

Alpough’s options will include two top returners, Keidy Cande-laria and Elizabeth Akinbiyi. Candelaria was selected to the All-Northeast-10 Conference Second Team last year after starting 23 matches for UNH. She fi nished second on the team in kills, third in digs and fourth in hitting percentage. An All-Region selection two years ago, Candelaria will play a vital role in the team’s success this season. Joining Candelaria in the rotation as an outside hitter could be any combination of the newcomers who have shown their poten-tial during preseason. The outside hitter possibilities are endless and will include freshman Margo Meteyer, freshman Hayley Wilson and sophomore Reeceann Cabaniero-Buendia. The Chargers’ second returning senior, Akinbiyi, will also be a key contributor at the net. A two-time NE-10 Player of the Week and a NE-10 All-Tournament Team selection last year, the Miami Gardens, Fla. native fi nished fi rst on the team in hitting percentage (.283) and third on the team with 256 kills. Over the last three weeks of preseason, sophomore Amber Cannady and freshman Kristy Atufunwa have both demon-strated their ability to play the middle and right side positions in the rotation. Cannady played in 15 matches last season and made one start. She registered 32 kills, 21 blocks and fi ve digs. Atufunwa, a freshman from Denver, Colo., was an All-City First Team selection as a junior. Salters may also experiment with Meteyer, Wilson and Cabaniero-Buendia on the right side throughout the fall.

DefenseA team’s defense often starts at the net with the middle blockers and leading the Chargers in the middle this season will be senior Eliza-beth Akinbiyi. She led the conference with 110 total blocks (1.05 blacks per set) last year and earned All-Tournament Team honors. She continued to improve in the offseason and should again be a force at the net in 2011. Another senior, Heather Ladao, will anchor New Haven’s backrow defense this season. The West Covina, Calif. native started all 30 matches last year and led the team in digs with 467 (4.45 per set). She also earned NE-10 Libero of the Week honors three times last season. Graduate student and transfer from Keene State College, Jamie Levine will bring additional experience to the defense after spending three seasons with the Owls. The Medfi eld, Mass. native played in all 144 sets last season for the Owls and led the team with 723 digs. Freshman Ashley Gomez, from El Paso, Texas, is also expected to compete as a defensive specialist.

The ScheduleThe Chargers’ season offi cially opens on Friday, September 2 when they take on Rollins College at Florida Southern College. The defend-ing NE-10 Champions have a 28-match schedule, including a trip to Florida to open the season and 13 non-conference matches. Along with Rollins, UNH will take on Florida Southern College on opening day at a crossover tournament in Lakeland, Fla. The following day, the Chargers will take on Saint Edward’s University (Texas) and Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla. New Haven then returns to New England and travels to N.Y.I.T. for a non-conference match against its former East Coast Conference foe. The Chargers home opener will take place on Wednesday, September 14 when they host the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport in a crucial non-conference match.

New Haven, in a quest for its fourth-straight undefeated NE-10 regular season, will open its conference schedule on Saturday, September 17 when they host Le Moyne College at Charger Gym-nasium. September 17 is also one of two tri-matches which will be hosted in West Haven this season. The Chargers will take on C.W. Post later in the day as part of the three-match set. The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 31st year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II.

The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of successes – the growth from seven original schools to more than double its size 20 years later – the contention for and winning of national championships – the change in league structure from on-campus administration to a central governing location – the anticipation of, coping with and addition of modern technology - the recognition of student-athlete performances in the classroom where the real competitions are played out – all of them have been built thanks to the hard work and dedication through the years of thousands of people who have, at one time or another, called the Northeast-10 home for their athletics program or their livelihood.

The NE-10 history began with the vision of a few good men and women. It was back in 1979 that a handful of athletics directors realized that the world of college athletics was changing and that they, and their programs, would have to change as well.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the NCAA began to emphasize the importance of conferences in organizing competition and determining bids to NCAA national tournaments. The NCAA required six teams to be recognized as a conference in order to award championships, and the creation of national tournaments with automatic qualifi ers to league champions became a new goal towards which teams could strive.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classifi ed Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfi eld, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Hartford joined the ECAC Division I North Atlantic Conference but was immediately replaced by Merrimack.

The “Northeast-10” name came about when Saint Michael’s and Quinnipiac joined the league in 1987 and the conference remained stable until 1995 when Springfield left for Division III. The league stayed at 10 members as Le Moyne joined the league in 1996 from the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and briefl y expanded to 11 when Pace joined in 1998 from the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). Quinnipiac elevated to the Division I Northeast Conference (NEC) to again return the foundation of 10 until the last major expansion took place prior to 2001 when fi ve new schools joined the fold. Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire University (formerly New Hampshire College), the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Southern Connecticut State University were joined by the College of Saint Rose.

In 2008, Bryant University departed for Division I and the University of New Haven immediately to replace Bryant in all sports, maintaining a 15 institutions in the conference.

Adelphi University, became the newest member of the conference last year, bringing membership to 16 full-time institutions.

EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE

The University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament an astounding 25 times in 28 seasons. That string includes 18 appearanc-es in the Sweet Sixteen and 11 berths to the Elite Eight.

Overall in 35 seasons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,057-319 - a winning percentage of .768.

Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The resume of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4.

Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the pro-gram’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the fi rst 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December, 2006.

She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top fi ve all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top fi ve four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her fi nal 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSteven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-year-old institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45

countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences.

Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities.

As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at

Wise, Virginia, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo, an institution with about 11,000 students; and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, an independent comprehensive institution of fi ve colleges and 3,400 students, which is ranked by U. S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the Midwest.

He completed his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Germany and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English), also from Eberhard-Karls Universitat. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O’Brien’s

fi ction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twenty-fi ve countries in twenty-fi ve years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. He was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and fi lm form (associate producer of the fi lm), and is the President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the foundation.

His wife grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery during their time in Wise.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and fi nd UNH a new athletics conference that best fi ts the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was

at that time only the fi fth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top fi ve four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven.

A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of science in physical education, Chin earned her Master’s of science degree in physical education from UNC-Greensboro.
